SENATOR TIM GRENDELL

APRIL 6, 2009

There are some central committee members who are angry because Carol Ann Schindel lost her
re-election bid. While that may be understandable to a point, their anger should be directed at (1) The
Republican House Campaign Committee’s political consultants who ran the TV attack ad that invited
Carol Ann’s opponent’s extremely effective TV response ad, and (2) The individuals who stopped funding
Carol Ann’s TV ads when her poll numbers dropped. Carol Ann’s poll numbers went up after my telephone
endorsement calls went out on her campaign’s last week-end. In these calls, I made it crystal clear that I
endorsed Carol Ann Schindel for reelection.

President Ronald Regan said “Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican.”

Regrettably, some disgruntled members of the Lake County Republican Party Central Committee
do not subscribe to President Regan’s Eleventh Commandment and want to air local party laundry in the
newspaper. While I appreciate that “controversy” sells newspapers, I will not join these central committee
members in violating President Regan’s sage advice.

Whatever differences I may have with the Lake County Republican Party Central Committee and
visa versa should be addressed inside the party’s walls and not in the newspaper. I have tried to do just that.
I personally met with Carol Ann Schindel and members of the central committee to discuss her race and
other matters. Unfortunately, it has become apparent that despite my efforts, some members have a personal
agenda that cannot be reasonably addressed.

It simply is unfortunate that some individuals do not want to accept the truth or want to embarrass
me. These individuals conveniently forget that I supported Congressman Steve LaTourette, Commissioner
Ray Sines, Coroner Lynn Smith, Kevin Rhomberg, Mike Gutierrez, Carol Ann Schindel, and Republican
Candidates in Geauga County during the November 2008 election. Moreover these disgruntled committee
members apparently do not understand that their pursuit of personal vengeances is not in the best interest of
Lake County or its Republican Party.

I will not expend any more time addressing last year’s events. These discontented individuals
should be utilizing their energy on future elections, not rehashing the last one. First of all, I made sure to
secure the passing of SJR 1, the Veterans’ Bonus Bill. Second, I am working to draft legislation that
addresses many constituents’ need for better septic systems. Third, I am planning to make changes to oil
and gas regulations that will better address the safety and well being of my constituents. Let it be known
that I am far too busy working for the welfare of my 350,000 constituents to drop everything and revisit
events that occurred over five months ago in order to satisfy the blood lust of a few unhappy Republicans.
That would be extremely counterproductive and could cause a major rift with the Democratic led Ohio
House. Such a rift would jeopardize my ability to obtain passage of important legislation that benefits Lake,
Geauga, and Eastern Cuyahoga County. It would be a brech of my duty to all of my constituents to put their
best interests at risk just to satisfy the vengeful motives of a few.

With this in mind, the above statement shall also serve as my official statement and response in
this matter. If you write an article on this topic, I respectfully ask that the above statement be published in
full as my position and response.

Thank you for your consideration.
