Course Prerequisite 1. Microprocessors. Objectives: The course should impart the basic concepts of Microcontrollers applied to Design and implementation of various medical instruments. The major areas of biomedical engineering include Medical instrumentation. With the advent of microprocessors, Microcontroller and various soft computing tools applying them on instrumentation becomes vital. Expected Outcome: Students as PG in BME will be equipped with good foundation in ALP so as to develop innovative projects in future.

Introduction to Microcontrollers: (9 hrs) Overview of 8 bit, 16 bit Microcontrollers Intel - Motorola, CISC & RISC Processors Harvard & Von Neumann Architecture, overview of the 8051 family 8051 Architecture Registers and Memory Organisation. 8051 Microcontroller: (9 hrs) 8051 Assembly Language Programming Instruction Set Jump Logical Instructions & Programs Arithmetic instructions and Programs Logic Instructions & Programs single bit instruction and programming -I/O port programming -addressing modes Programming 8051: (10 hrs) Timer/Counter Programming of 8051 Interrupts programming- interfacing 8051 to external memory semi conductor memory memory address decoding interfacing with external ROM Data memory space - interfacing to 8255 Interfacing & Introduction to PIC Microcontrollers: (9 hrs) PIC Microcontroller Overview and features PIC 16 C6X/7X Instructions, addressing modes - I/O ports Interrupts Timers. Interfacing LCD to 8051 ADC, DAC Interfacing a stepper motor Keyboard interfacing Medical Applications (8 hrs) Physiological monitoring Microprocessor/ microcontroller based ECG Machines. Holter monitoring. Exercise systems. Digital central monitoring systems for patient monitoring. Design concepts. Advanced Computer based arrhythmia detection system-software design protocols. -Communication and training Aids for the Differently abled People-Prosthetics. Text Books 1.
