Advantages of Television
Article by sharada_patil, High School, 12th grade, March 2003
Advances in transportation and communication like the airplane and the telephone have changed the way the nations interact with each other in a global society. Choose another technological innovation that you think is important. Give specific reasons for your choice. Advances in transportation and communication like the airplane and telephone have changed the way the nations interact with each other in a global society. Another technological innovation that I think important is the television. Television or the so-called 'idiot box' has changed every aspect of our life. It is a very good mean of entertainment. It is a source of entertainment for all age groups, right from children to the aged. One can watch colorful animated cartoons for children as well as health shows and sports for adults. One can even watch movies at home and thus the time and strain one has to take to buy tickets or go to the theater is saved. A person who is worned out from office can come home and relax himself to watch his favorite TV program. Television can never bore anyone and serves as a good time pass. Television is also a good media for a person to be upgraded with the knowledge of what is happening around the world. Television or I can say ' The Fifth Estate ', next to newspaper can tell people of the recent events happening around us. People now can see the Iraq war in their drawing rooms through private TV channels like CNN, BBC, FOX etc. shown on TV,

which would never be possible without the television. Cinema awards and important sport pogrammes are being watched live nowadays by millions of viewers through TV. This media can even change the political life and has changed it in many countries. People can upgrade themselves about the government especially during days of elections and budget sessions. For example, the downfall of Rajiv Gandhi in India due to the Bofor's crisis was because of different types of mass media like the television. Through television one can know the details of recent

discoveries, innovations ,inventions and achievements visually happening around the globe. Education can be made simple by lecturers. They can show television documentaries with good animation effects to made studies interesting. It has been known that things known or learnt visually stick into the head and can be grasped faster rather than in a theoretical way . Hence, apart from telephones and airplanes,I feel televisions are an innovation that has changed our lives and is one of the main reasons for making the world a 'global village'.

Autumn Banks Author of 2 Stories Rated: T - English - Published: 03-01-08 - Complete - id:2482693 Share THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TELEVISION In today modern world television is the most popular and recognized from of media and most homes in the western and developed worlds own one. That small (in some cases rather large) box sitting in your lounge is your connection to the outside world. It is an indispensable item and many of us cannot imagine life without it. As with everything there are advantages and disadvantages with the television. The main advantage is televisions ability to bring you news as it happens. A second advantage is the fact we are using more than one sense when viewing. The final advantage in this essay is the vast amount of information and documentaries available for viewing. However the first disadvantage is the amount of time spent watching television is often considered a waste of time. The second disadvantage is the fact that families may be in the same room but with the television on may not even acknowledge each other. The final disadvantage illustrated in this essay is that young children are often being exposed to sex scenes and scenes of violence. Firstly, for many of us the television is our first or only source of news and current events. Most channels have news updates up to four times a day and current affairs programmes which take a deeper look at the news that has affected the world that day or week. Theses programmes are often family friendly and are sometimes the only form of media available or easy to understand for children or non-speakers of English. These news shows keep people up to date on the outside world it is possible to know everything that happened in a day without even going outside. However these news shows can try and monopolize people's opinions and be a bias to one political party or one side of a war. Secondly, what many of us do not realise is that we use at least two senses to enjoy television. We use our eyes to watch the television screen and the visual on the screen. We also use our ears or hearing to listen to the dialogue and noises on the screen.

Compared to other forms of media which usually involve only one sense e.g. the radio only requires the hearing sense and a book only requires sight. Even though the television lets us see and hear things it can cause eyesight problems and many people turn there televisions up which can cause hearing problems. The final advantage is the vast amount of educational programming available for viewing particularly on channels like the discovery channel and national geographic which can educate and stimulate people and wet every audience member's appetite. It is also the fastest way to improve your knowledge and help you learn something completely new. Where else can you learn about Marylyn Monroe and Winston Churchill in the same afternoon? Many people who cannot afford university or night courses or simply just want a basic knowledge of one particular subject or event. Use documentaries to quench their thirst for learning. The first disadvantage is that many people do not realise how much time they spend watching television if you spend one hour a day watching television. That is 365 hours a year and 3607 hours in ten years. You can only imagine what you could do with that time, it is possible to learn a language or do a university course. Many value their television shows over exercise or physical activity which can lead to obesity and 'couch potato'. Many people also feel the desire to watch a favourite television show every day or every week and neglect social commitments and therefore becoming anti-social. A second disadvantage is that many people neglect their families so they can watch television. A family may be in the same room but would not say a word to each other or acknowledge each other. Many families now also eat dinner in front of the television which means normal dinner table conversation is lost. Most large families also have multiple televisions so that each member can watch the programme they would like to watch this means that some families may spend less than an hour in each others company before going to bed. A final disadvantage of watching television is the violence and sex scenes that young children are often exposed too. Many of us find shows with crime or violence entertaining but these are not suitable for children of young ages. These scenes are practically common on crime dramas. Children may not intentionally be being exposed but

[Type text]

by simply being in or near the same room as an older child or adult watching the programme. With children being exposed to these scenes it can corrupt there innocent minds leading them in some extreme cases become violent to other children. It can also lead to more permanent problems such as violence or evil thoughts well into adulthood. Fortunately this can be easily avoided or reversed by not allowing young children to view these programmes by placing them in a different room from the television or sending them to bed. In conclusion television is perhaps the world's greatest invention though it is possible it will one day be replaced by something resembling a computer it is still indispensable in todays modern world. Television however has advantages and disadvantages as illustrated in this essay. It can be an educational, multi-sensory communication devise that takes up our time to exercise or our family time it can also have scenes that corrupt young minds. As Winston Churchill once said 'the best things are either immoral or bad for you' television is best in moderation. So next time you're bored don't turn on the television go out and play some sport.

A Sample Essay on Television

AATISH PALEKAR ARTICLES

Television is one of the latest wonders of science. By the radio we can only hear the voice; but the television we can also see the face of the speaker. We have only to switch on the television, and at once we can both see and hear a popular leader speaking, or a drama being staged or a cinema film being exhibited at the T.V. station or a match being played in any country of the world. In

short, in recent times television has become one of the most important means of recreation, propaganda and national integration. The advantages of T.V. are so many that every possible effort should be made to provide the country with a nation-wide T.V. service at the earliest. T.V. is an important means of recreation and entertainment. It is the most suitable medium for mass communication and education. It can be used by the government to give wide publicity to its views, and to the development work done by it. In this way, it can be used as a powerful means of propaganda and the formation of public opinion. It can serve as a handmaid to planning. Indeed, by some expert television is considered essential for the success of planning. Further, it can perform the vital task of mass education. It can help in increasing production, in imparting family planning education and in spreading mass literacy. Talks delivered by eminent persons and Carrie to the masses through T.V., can do much to eradicate various social evils. T.V. sets installed in school can supplement the education imparted through class lectures. What is seen leaves a more permanent impression on the mind than what is heard or read, and this makes obvious the educational value of T.V. The government is fully alive to all these advantages of T.V. programmed have been broadcast through satellites so that they could be viewed all over the country. The Asia games gave a great boost of T.V. and since then a national programmed has become a regular feature and many more states have been brought within the T.V. network. Color T.V. enhances the pleasure of the viewers. The programmers become more natural and attractive. The gorgeousness and splendor of a programmer can be enjoyed only through color T.V. the splendor of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Asia games could be enjoyed only by those who were lucky enough to view it on a color T.V. set. It was

magnificent and spectacular show, but it could not be appreciated on the black and white sets. Everything possible should be done to develop color technology and make color T.V. sets available in the country at a price within the reach of the common man. However, it should be kept in mind that color T.V. puts more strain on the eyes. It is a health hazard. It must not be viewed for a long time. Moreover, color T.V. is very sensitive and the picture gets blurred if there is even slight defect in the antenna angle or in its cord. Even slight disturbances near the T.V. set- they may be on the road near the house-find their echo on the screen of a color T.V. Television is not a mere medium of entertainment; it has far reaching educational and cultural significance. It is an importance means of national unity and integration. T.V. serial can be used to fight the menace of communalism, regionalism and terrorism. Special programmed with this end in view should be regularly televised. Similarly between people living in different parts of the country should be stressed. It should be made available not only in the cities, but in villages as well, and at cheap rates. Top priority must be given to it. Let us hope in the near future. T.V. sets would be within the reach of the common man. It is a happy sign that recently, television has been separated from the Radio and a separate T.V. corporation has been set up. In 1985, one T.V. receiving set was installed every day, and in this way even remote areas were covered with T.V. network. This shows that the government is quite alive to its role in the offing.

We hear a lot about the negative effects of television on the viewer. Obviously, television can be harmful if it is watched constantly to the exclusion of other activities. It would be just as harmful to listen to records or to eat constantly. However, when television is watched in moderation, it is extremely valuable, as it provides relaxation, entertainment, and education. (Thesis statement with plan of development) First of all, watching TV has the value of sheer relaxation. (Topic

sentence) Watching television can be soothing and restful after an eighthour day of pressure, challenges, or concentration. After working hard all day, people look forward to a new episode of a favorite show or yet another showing of Casablanca or Red River. This period of relaxation leaves viewers refreshed and ready to take on the world again. Watching TV also seems to reduce stress in some people. This benefit of television is just beginning to be recognized. One doctor, for example, advises his patients with high blood pressure to relax in the evening with a few hours of television. In addition to being relaxing, television is entertaining. (Topic sentence) Along with the standard comedies, dramas, and game shows that provide enjoyment to viewers, television offers a variety of movies and sports events. Moreover, in many areas, viewers can pay a monthly fee and receive special cable programming. With this service, viewers can watch first-run movies, rock and classical music concerts, and specialized sports events, like European soccer and Grand Prix racing. Viewers can also buy or rent movies to show on their television sets through videodisk players or videocassette players. Still another growing area of TV entertainment is video games. Cartridges are available for everything from electronic

baseball to Pac-man, allowing the owner to have a video game arcade in the living room.

(Topic

sentence)

Preschoolers learn colors, numbers, and letters from public television programs, like Sesame Street, that use animation and puppets to make learning fun. Science shows for older children, like 1-2-3 Contact, go on location to analyze everything from volcanoes to rocket launches. Adults, too, can get an education (college credits included) from courses given on television. Also, television widens our knowledge by covering important events and current news. Viewers can see and hear presidents speeches, state funerals, natural disasters, and election results as they are happening. Finally, a television set hooked up to a home computer can help its owner learn how to manage the household budget, invest in the stock market, or master a foreign language. Perhaps because television is such a powerful force, we like to criticize it and search for its flaws. However, the benefits of television should not be ignored. We can use television to relax, to have fun, and to make

ourselves smarter. This electronic wonder, then, is a servant, not a master.
