THE COMMONS OF PROVIDENCE

Huron Chamber Spotlight Business of the Week

So Long John! Were Surely Gonna Miss You

By Sheila Ehrhardt, Director Huron Chamber of Commerce The Huron Chamber of Commerce lost a long-time board member, a dedicated volunteer, and a great friend last Friday, when John Clark was tragically killed in a car accident. His wife, Cindy and daughter, Jennifer were also injured in the accident, which occurred near Helena, a community near Fremont. Ever since coming to BGSU Firelands College in 1995, where he was coordinator of career services, John has served on the Huron Chambers Board of Directors, including several terms as president down through the years. Ours is a small board of some 18 members, four of whom are permanent representatives of the college, the city schools, the city and the township, while the rest serve three-year terms. Working on our many fundraising events, educational seminars and social activities throughout the year, our board becomes very close, somewhat like an extended family. Each of us has a special memory of John and the many facets of his professional skills and gentle, caring personality. No matter what we had planned, John was always eager to pitch in and lend a hand. Our 15th annual Lighthouse Races were run on Saturday morning. The day before, John e-mailed me apologizing for not being able to drop the traffic cones along the route, as hed done for many years. This would be the last Id ever hear from him. His death marked the loss of a second cherished Chamber board member in just two years. Ellen (Roberts) Myers passed away very suddenly on the eve of one our monthly board meetings and we still reminisce about what a dynamo she was for our group. John was a classy guy who offered help and support to so many prospective job applicants in his unassuming, gentle manner, but always, just beneath the surface, was that razor-sharp wit and dry sense of humor. Ive spent many hours the past few days, reflecting on the special fun times weve all shared with John. For me, the greatest of those times was out at Sawmill Creek Resort, as we volunteered at the Candy Cane House during Festival of Lights. For the past four or five years, it had become a tradition that John would don a Santa Suit, Sandy Willgrube would handle the large red stocking for donations, and Id hand out coloring sheets and candy canes. Two or three years ago, Cindy joined us as the prettiest Mrs. Claus, youve ever seen. During the long evening, wed catch up on our family happenings in the past year, but when a car would pull up with little ones inside, the quiet, dignified John would turn into an honest-to-God feisty Santa, sticking his head into the car, getting up close to one of the older kids, staring at them with his intense blue eyes, and in his deepest baritone say, I understand that youve been bugging your little sister this week. Youd better shape up or Ill turn the sleigh around and send Rudolph right

The Huron Playhouse in 2013

By Lisa Yako Huron has the immense pleasure and honor of being the home of the Huron Playhouse, Ohios oldest continuing summer theatre. Yet, when an entity has been around for 65 years, as has the Huron Playhouse, change is inevitable. According to philosopher, writer, and speaker, Alan Watts, The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Over the past three years, the Playhouse has undergone major transformations with the largest change being that the organization is no longer associated with Bowling Green State University (BGSU). Since its inception in 1949, the Playhouse was part of BGSUs Department of Theatre and Film. In 2011, BGSU withdrew its funding for the Playhouse, and those associated with the organization were forced to find a way to keep it going. The following year, the Huron Playhouse officially became a non-profit organization and came under the guidance of a board of directors. At the beginning of the 2012 season, the board hired Vermilion resident, Nancy Gibbons, to serve as the organizations executive director. The 2012 season went on as usual with high-quality shows being performed by high-quality actors from around the country. Yet, the season ended with the Playhouse having a deficit of more than $40,000. The board decided that some drastic measures needed to be taken to ensure the future of the Playhouse, including a major realignment and more stringent bookkeeping as required by law for governance of a non-profit. The board also wanted to have a year-round presence in the community. Hence, Nancy became a year-round employee with the task of overseeing budgetary items, fundraising, and development for the Playhouse. As a result of the many changes instituted by the board, long-time artistic director and manager, Jann Glann, decided to step down.

The board was confident enough in the Playhouse and its enduring history to go ahead with plans for the 2013 season. Ryan Neal was hired to serve as the artistic director. Nancy and Ryan chose the shows for the 2013 season and selected the student actors who will spend eight weeks of the summer in Huron. The staff and acting company who will be part of the upcoming season represent 10 different states and 18 different universities. The 2013 season will open on June 25 with The Wizard of Oz. The second show will be one from the Playhouses first season, Dangerous Corner. This will be followed by I Love You, Youre Perfect, Now Change on July 9 and then Blithe Spirit on July 16. The season will end with the musical, Gypsy, which will run from July 23-27. New for this season will be the Artist in Residence Program. The first artist in residence will be Broadway veteran, Karen Babcock. In addition to directing and

choreographing The Wizard of Oz and Gypsy, Karen will be offering master classes on stage performance, acting, singing, and dance. There will also be courses offered to local dance teachers. Essentially, Karen will serve as a mentor for the company members and share her breadth of experience with them. Also new for this season is the ambassador program. For a $25 fee, any community member can play an active role in the Playhouse by getting to know the company, helping welcome audiences, and much more. Finally, ticket sales will be handled a bit differently this year. Though unpaid, reserved tickets will no longer be allowed, tickets can be purchased both in person from the box office or online beginning in late May. All in all, the show must go on and that it will! For more information on the Huron Playhouse, visit their web site, www. huronplayhouse.org.

Mock Crash at HHS Increases Awareness

The students of Huron High School had the opportunity to witness in real time the physical and emotional trauma victims of a serious automobile accident experience during a Mock Crash at Huron Memorial Stadium last Thursday, May 2, 2013. The demonstration was put on by local safety service agencies in an attempt to drive home the dangers of distracted driving and driving while intoxicated. The Huron Police and Fire, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Erie County Sheriffs Department, LifeFlight and Fast Times Towing pulled together the hour long presentation with the assistance of four HHS students, Madi Mize, Morgan Mize, Nathan Zeck, and Graham Mast who acted as victims. Behind the scenes were HHS students, Ross Johnson shooting film while Conor Morehart and Zach Figgins worked with Mrs. Patty Vanbarg on the victims make-up. The scene of the Mock Crash was set at Jim Campbell Drive near the stadium. A group of friends were returning from a party after prom. The driver, Nathan, had been consuming alcohol earlier in the evening and told his passengers, Madi, Morgan and Graham he was capable of driving. Nathan lost control of his vehicle and struck a telephone pole. Madi was declared dead at the scene while Graham sustained life threatening injuries that required being transported by LifeFlight. Nathans mother, Denise Zeck addressed the student body after the Mock Crash . She shared with the students the very emotional and touching story of losing her brother Robert Burke in a car crash 25 years ago to a distracted driver. Nathans mother talked about the aftermath of the accident and how it continues to affect her entire family today. Everyone involved did a fantastic job to make the entire scene as realistic as possible for the maximum effect. We want to thank everyone who made this event a success, stated Mr. Scott Matheny, Principal Huron High School. Working with Sergeant Brian Mamere of the Ohio State Highway Patrol & longtime resident of Huron along with Resource Officer Keith Lobsinger from the Huron Police Department was a pleasure. Both were dedicated to making this experience as real and moving as possible. The Huron Fire Department sent a crew over the night before to set the scene with Sergeant Mamere, Officer Lob-

signer, Mr. Tony Munafo and myself so that we were without a hitch on Friday, explained Matheny. Our hope certainly is that all our students will think before driving distracted or getting into a car with someone who has been drinking, stated Matheny.

Cabelas Masters Walleye Circuit Heads For Legendary Lake Erie May 17-19
Presented by Lowe Equipment Attachments World-class walleye fishing and nearly $50,000 in cash and prizes will be on hand when the Cabelas Masters Walleye Circuit visits Lake Erie, Huron, Ohio, May 17-19. The team-format tournament offers two days of competition on Eries legendary walleye fishery, with one day reserved in case of bad weather. The circuits timetested team format lets anglers choose their favorite fishing partner to share the excitement. Plus, the May time frame promises to provide schools of trophy-sized walleyes just offshore from the Huron River Boat Ramp, where take-offs will take place. The weigh-in will take place each day at the Huron Boat Basin Amphitheatre beginning at 4 p.m. Two-person teams will be allowed to weigh five walleyes per day, and the team with the heaviest two-day total weight will be crowned the Lake Erie tournament champions. Cabelas MWC payouts are based on the number of teams entered in each event. Plus, the MWC Big Fish Pot, along with sponsor contingencies including Cabelas Angler Cash, Ranger Cup, Lowrance HDS Gen2/Elite-7, Berkley Baits and Optima True Blue add thousands in cash and prizes to the total. For this event, presenting sponsor Lowes Equipment Attachments has added additional contingency prize money as well. And as an added incentive, the first-place team wins a $1,000 Cabelas National Team Championship Prize Package including paid NTC entry, travel stipend, team jerseys and plaques. The Lake Erie event marks the third tournament under new management for the MWC, which was founded in 1984. New owner Robert Cartlidge extended his gratitude to the teams that have made the first months of the new season a rousing success. We want to thank all walleye anglers for showing their support of the Cabelas Masters Walleye Circuit during this transition year, said Cartlidge. We invested heavily in all-new equipment, and in promotions to the angling world outside of the normal walleye areas, he continued. These efforts are already paying off. We have a record number of premier teams signed up this year; the Detroit River tournament saw a record number of teams for that event; and with 12 days yet to go before registration closes, the Lake Erie MWC qualifier out of Huron, Ohio, is on track to break the 79team mark set for the same event, hosted on the same weekend last year. Registration for that tournament closes at midnight on Sunday, May 12th (Mothers Day). Besides great payouts, the tournament promises world-class walleye action as well. At last years Lake Erie MWC tournament, South Dakotans Rick Olson and Tom Wiehoff topped a field of 158 anglers from 13 states and one Canadian province with a 10-fish, 85.74-pound total weight. Big fish was a 12.89-pound behemoth brought in by Mark & Richard Bretz of Newark, Ohioworth $1,175 from the Big Fish Pot. Walleye fans of all ages are invited to the weigh-ins, which are free and open to the public. The festivities begin at 4 p.m. daily at the Huron River Ramp. The Cabelas MWC, National Professional Anglers Association, Pure Fishing and Zippo Outdoor Brands will present a Youth & Family Fishing Clinic immediately after the first days weigh-in. The first 50 youths will receive rod-and-reel combos courtesy of the NPAA. Fans are also encouraged to come to the boat basin to see the anglers off and wish them luck at the 7 a.m. boat parade prior to each mornings takeoff. While the MWCs eastern anglers compete on Lake Erie May 17-19, the Circuit will also hold a qualifier on Lake Pueblo, Colorado, on the same dates. These are the third and fourth of 10 Cabelas MWC qualifying tournaments in 2013. The remaining schedule includes Green Bay of Lake Michigan at Oconto, Wisconsin, May 31-June 2; Lake Oahe at Spring Creek, South Dakota, June 7-9; Lake Winnebago at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, June 28-30; Devils Lake, North Dakota, August 2-4; the St. Marys River at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, August 22-23; and Cass Lake, Minnesota, out of Stony Point Resort, Sept. 13-15. Cabelas, the Worlds Foremost Outfitter for hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, is entering its 11th season as title sponsor of the MWC. Official sponsors include: Berkley Gulp!, Lowe Equipment Attachments, Lowrance, Mercury Marine, MotorGuide, Ranger Boats, The Walleye Federation and Zippo Outdoor Brands. Associate sponsors include: Berkley Trilene, Church Tackle, Optima Batteries, O2 Marine Technologies and Sea Grant. Motel 6, located at 601 Rye Beach Road in Huron, is the official hotel of the MWCs Lake Erie event. Based in Ponca City, Oklahoma, the Cabelas MWC is oldest running national walleye circuit in America. Cabelas MWC is owned by The Walleye Federation and is open to two-person teams regardless of club or sponsor affiliation. Entry fees are $650 per tournament, of which more than 100 percent is returned to anglers at the qualifiers, World Championship and Team of the Year races. Registration remains open through the Sunday night prior to each tournament. For more information, visit masterswalleyecircuit.com, email info@masterswalleyecircuit. com, or call (580) 765-9031.

PARADE of

catawba & marblehead

Spring is finally here! The newness of the season prompts many of us to spring clean our homes and bodies of filth that might have built up over the long winter. From the physical perspective, we tend to eat better with the coming of spring and want to shed that extra winter weight. Our homes, which have not had the renewal that comes with open windows, are in need of some refreshening also. If you need some ideas about how to cleanse both your body and your home in a healthful manner, plan to attend the program entitled, Body & Home Spring Detox: Recharge & Rejuvenate, which will be presented by the team members of Elite Wellness Group at the Huron Public Library on Thursday, May 8 at 7:00 PM. Elite Wellness Group is a Huron-based, proactive and prevention-oriented company that partners with people who

want to stay or get healthy naturally. Their approach is to work with individuals on one-to-one basis to teach them how to live a healthier lifestyle that is in tune with both science and nature. Elite Wellness Group team members include CEO, Karen Brown, registered nurse and certified wellness instructor, Janet Witte, dietitian, Jessica DuFresne, health educator, Theresa Graybill, and botanist and owner of Earth Philosophy, Rachel DuFresne. At their program at the Huron Public Library, each of the team members will share ideas that will inspire and equip you to begin to feel energized and a bit healthier. Sports/Schools 5 Lady Tigers Ground St. EHOVE Students Excel at State Competitions Paul Flyers, 15-0
Thursday, April 18th, 2013 Huron Hometown News
It continues to be feast or famine for the Tiger offense this Spring. After scoring just one run against Clyde the previous night, Huron crossed home plate 15 times on 17 hits to pull back to .500 for the season. (8-8 record) Kierston Hammond had her best outing of the year holding the opposition to just two hits and picking up 10 strikeouts. Just as important, Huron only commited on error all game. Of course the story of the game was the balanced offensive attack led by Amanda Vacca and Alison Litz. Both had three hits and scored three times. Emma Elder, Morgan Asberry, and Jenna Witter also managed multiple hits during the Tiger victory.

Pitcher Kierston Hammond

Elder Shuts Out Panthers

Young Emma Elder shut out the St. Mary Panthers 9-0 last week at Dorn Park in Sandusky. Her fine outing, combined with another error free game, allowed the Tigers to pick up their third SBC win of the season. Elder worked efficiently giving up just two walks and six hits in the seven inning, seven strike out effort. Madi Orzech knocked in her third home run of the season, along with two doubles. Alison Litz continued her stellar season at the plate going 4 for 4 and scoring three times. Note: The Lady Tigers have hit 15 HRs this season!

SkillsUSA A group of EHOVE Career Center students have come out on top in their students organizations state competitions last month. As part of their career tech programs, such as Computer Network Tech, Construction Tech, Forensic Science, Culinary Arts and many others, students have the opportunity to participate in the student organization associated with their program. The three student organizations include SkillsUSA, Business Professionals of America (BPA) and Family, Careers and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). Each is an association that provides students with opportunities to participate in competitive events, fundraisers, community service projects and social chapter activities. EHOVE students have several reasons for participating in SkillsUSA and the competitions. The leadership opportunities, community service work, chance to apply the skills theyve learned, and professional connections and opportunities are some examples. FCCLA Results: Each student won a gold medal in all of the skill events. Jacob Lewis (Perkins HS), Garde Manager, 3rd place, $2000 & $500 scholarships

Schools 6 Firelands Montessori Students Shawnee Second Grade Learns About Safe Bicycling
Thursday, May 9th, 2013 www.HuronHometownNews.com

Mr. Edward Karr, Safety & Security Coordinator from Erie MetroParks stopped by Shawnee Elementary School last week to give a presentation on the basics of bicycle safety and the proper way to wear a bike helmet to the second grade students. Erie MetroParks offers this program to all of the elementary schools in Erie County. The program is geared toward second grade, explained Karr. It is a good age group to address the safety basics as many of them are just coming off of training wheels and starting to get around a little more, he continued. The students watched an age appropriate video that discussed and reviewed common sense safety issues when riding a bicycle. Officer Karr could not stress enough the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bicycle. He showed the students how to properly fit a helmet to their head and how to properly wear a helmet.
80 B

Make sure the V in the straps is over the ears and the helmet is two fingers over the eye brow. Karr explained to the students they should not share helmets like they do not share toothbrushes. Watching for automobiles backing out of driveways was another area Officer Karr spent a great deal of time on with the students. He reminded the students riding on the sidewalk was the safest place for them; however they needed to be careful and watch out for cars. Officer Karr discussed bicycle terminology and reviewed with the young students how to keep their bicycles in good working order. At the end of the Bicycle Safety Program the students were given a packet to take home. Each packet contained additional bicycle safety information, a coloring book and a coupon from Wendys. With the spring like weather, all students are encouraged to practice safe bicycling and wear their helmets.

The Upper Elementary students at Firelands Montessori Academy completed their Independent Study projects and had Judging Day. This project takes place every year from January through mid-April. The students pick a topic and conduct research on it. Topic areas cover wild animals, science with experiments, history and the Constitution. One of

the highlights, is the in person interview they do with an expert in the field of their topic. They talk to zoo keepers, weathermen, professors at local colleges, and historians. Upon completing the research they type a 4 to 15 page paper, create a display board or power point presentation and give their speech to judges.
