STORY TIME WITH THE FOUNDING FATHER

The beginnings of Sarasota International Cricket Club have been well documented over the years It was 1983 when the Inaugural Match took place. The venue was Siesta Beach where a group of Poms and Yanks did battle. A lot of time was wasted discussing rules and order of play and then waiting for the receding tide so that we had a nice wet sand to start the match. The Old Salty Dogwas recognized as Cricket Headquarters where meetings were held and bar takings ourished.!! To this day nobody really knows who won the match as the scorers sheet oated Westwards. Our rst real match was played at the Outdoor Academy on Siesta Key. It was a short stay as the School Board lost their patience. Too many windows were being broken as well as motorists complaining of cricket balls damaging vehicles. Move number 2 was to the Eagles Club on Wilkinson Road where we were made welcome, andstayed 5 years. Financially, it turned out to be the worst decision the Club ever made as we lost in the region of 50 cricket balls every season. WHY, our neighbors who all had vicious pit bulls put up a fence to stopballs that entered their yards were conscated whichmeant any cricket ball hit for six was not retrievable as no player dared climb over the fence. The Eagle ground according to the locals had the "Biggest Oak Tree" in Sarasota. So big, it became our Club House with it's trunk of 30 ft diameter. Sheltering under the tree as we often did was a nerve wracking experience in a thunder storm. Thank You Eagles and Phil Needs for looking after us and remaining good friends, - Laurence Parry ! ! HOWZAT!!!???
by Dennis Lille-Pad - Australian Cricketing Legend

Lately Im often asked What is going on with the Aussies, can they win the Ashes? Well this is not the first time we have seen this kind of situation, after a purple patch in the early 70s Australia didnt win a test series in England from 75 until the worst team ever won 4-0 in 89. The Baggy Greens then only lost one series in the next 20 years before 2009 when the status of No.1 test side was taken from them and has been shared by the Poms, Saffas and Indians ever since. So what does this tell us? Is it that complacency breeds failure or is it just the nature of the game?... Well my theory is this - The players forget how much it hurts to loose for long periods of time. First comes the self-doubt, then the shame followed by the finger

pointing. The Aussies are at the finger pointing stage and they are going to be there for the next 6months. I feel the upcoming Ashes series will be the latest low point for Australian cricket, and honestly I cant wait. Because somewhere in this bunch there is a player about to be punished, embarrassed and likely dropped. Thats the player that will have trouble sleeping, thats the player who will snap at slackers around him at training... thats the next Allan Border, Steve Waugh & Ricky Pointing... Thats the champion who will lead Australia out of the Ashes and into the light... Luckily for the Aussies we wont have to wait long with only 3months between this Ashes series and the next. England win this series 2-1... However Australia will win the next series at home 3-0. Without the sour the sweet isnt so sweet. Keep an eye out for the next squinty eyed grumpy assassin to lead the next Worse team ever to

THE LAST WORD

by SICC President Richard Lawrence In the last six months, with the cash flow from the successful 2012 Thanksgiving Festival, the club paid off the loans from members that helped buy what is now Parry Field. It owns its home free and clear. Hats off to the members who helped in this remarkable achievement. The club also gained tax exempt status as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The changes that you will be seeing in the coming months reflect a new focus by the board on our future, preserving and improving the wonderful facilities we have and fulfilling our IRS-approved mission: "To promote the sport of cricket by conducting games and tournaments for amateur cricketers nationally and internationally and to support the development of amateur cricketers, particularly youth cricketers, for these competitions, by providing facilities, equipment and training." The club has appointed Clint Goodchild as General Manager with the principal tasks of establishing a youth cricket program and marketing our under-used facilities to compatible sporting, social and corporate organizations in the local community with the aim of enlarging our donor base and gaining sponsorships to support our mission. We plan to make our facilities more attractive to outside users by adding an outdoor barbecue and bar. This will also allow us to cater to what we hope will be a growing number of social members and casual visitors from Lakewood Ranch. For the longer term, the club is working on an ambitious plan for expanding and improving the ground with a modern fully equipped clubhouse and an enlarged playing area with a turf square and turf practice nets. The aim is to attract professional teams for warm weather training, to be able to stage sanctioned, national and regional tournaments at senior and varying age levels, and to provide facilities that will generate recreational and social use from the Lakewood Ranch community. This plan, along with safeguarding the playing rights of SICC members and youth cricketers, will fund the professional management, upkeep and sustainability of what would otherwise

become an under-used, expensive amenity that would struggle to survive sustained by a small, aging member base and largely volunteer labor. Lastly, but importantly, there are some changes to how we organize and play matches. Chris Thakoorpersad has not only been Club Captain, he has been playing captain for most games for the last three seasons. It is a heavy burden and he has done it superbly. The board has asked Chris to remain as Club Captain and to take a key role in bringing the club's long term plan to fruition by acting as liaison with USACA, ensuring that the plan will get approval and support from the national governing body. I am delighted to announce that Virgil Gossai, Clint Goodchild and Marinus Van Driel have agreed to replace Chris as Playing Captains, dividing the fixtures roughly equally between them. Clint will remain responsible for captaining the monthly "Social Saturday" matches. To help with and simplify the practical arrangements for games, we will simplify the match catering. For most games members will no longer be asked to bring food. We shall reinstate the system of having a Match Day Manager for each game, a responsibility that will be rotated among players and fall to an individual two or three times per season. The job of the Match Day Manager is to help the captain by organizing and allocating all pre and post game logistics among his team mates. This newsletter shows the schedule for all of May. We aim to make this the new norm, publishing fixtures as far in advance as possible and making additions and changes as they happen on the website and on a calendar in the club house. Clint Goodchild will send calls for availability and confirm teams, liaising closely with the captains. This will replace the Match Scheduler announcements. - Richard Lawrence
