SUBMIT ON 10 MAY 2013 Exercise 2 1. The mean and standard deviation of the maximum loads supported by 60 cables are given by 11.09 tons and 0.73 tons respectively. Find 95% confidence limits for the mean of the maximum loads of all cables produced by the company. A sample poll of 100 voters chosen at random from all voters in a given district indicated that 55% of them were in favour of a particular candidate. a) Find the 95% confidence limits for the proportion of all voters in favour of this candidate. How large a sample of voters should take if 99.73% confident the candidate will be elected with error 1%?

The breaking strengths of cables produced by a manufacturer have a mean of 1800 pounds (lb) and a standard deviation of 100lb. By a new technique in the manufacturing process, it is claimed that the breaking strength can be increased. To test this claim, a sample of 50 cables is tested and it is found that the mean breaking strength is 1850lb. Can we support the claim at 0.01 ? It is often useful for companies to know who their customers are and how they became customers. A credit card company is interested in whether the owner of the card applied for the card on their own or was contracted by a telemarketer. The company obtained the following sample information regarding end of the month balances for the two groups. Source Applied Contracted Mean 1568 1967 Standard Deviation 356 857 Sample Size 10 8

4.

Can you conclude that the mean balance is for the credit card holders that contacted is larger than those who applied for their own card? Assume the population standard deviation are not the same. Use 0.05 significance level. 5. A random sample of 33 individuals who listen to talk radio was selected and the hours per week that each listens to talk radio was determined. The data as follows. 9 8 7 4 8 6 8 8 7 10 8 10 6 7 7 8 9 6 5 8 5 6 8 7 8 5 5 8 7 6 6 4 5 a) b) Find the 95% confidence interval for the mean hours per week of all listeners. Test hypothesis if the mean hours per week that each listens to talk radio is not equal to 5 by using p-value approach using 0.05 .

Nickel wishes to compare the two companies (Schadek and Bowern) it uses to appraise the value of residential homes. Nickel selected a sample of 10 residential properties and scheduled both firms for an appraisal. The results are run using Excel software and produced output as below: (t-test: Two Sample Assuming Equal Variances) Schadek Bowyer Mean 226.8 222.2 Variance 208.44 204.178 Observations 10 10 Pooled Variance 206.511 Hypothesized Mean Difference 0.000 df 18.000 t Stat 0.716 P(T<=t) one tail 0.242 T Critical one tail 1.734 P(T<=t) two tail 0.483 T Critical two tail 2.101 At the 0.05 significance level, can we conclude there is a difference in the mean appraised values of the homes?
