53 The press and media

1. Mass media Media which is intended for a large audience. It may take the form of broadcast media, as in the case of television and radio, or print media, like newspapers and magazines.

The mass media plays an important part of the political process.

2. Product Something manufactured.

Chinese power sellers pushing product on eBay to customers worldwide.

3. Communication A piece of information given, a letter, etc.

I received your communication in this mornings post.

4. Advertisement A film, newspaper announcement, poster etc making something know, especially in order to persuade people to buy it.

She replied to my advertisement for a secretary.

5. Publish Publish is to prepare, print and produce for sale (a book etc)

His new novel is being published this month.

6. Soap opera A radio or television serial with stock characters in domestic dramas that are noted for being sentimental and melodramatic.

She just watches soap operas all day long

7. Sitcom (Situation Comedy) A humorous radio or television series featuring the reactions of a regular cast of characters to unusual situations, such as misunderstandings or embarrassing coincidences; a sitcom.

Anna and Sharon became the first situation comedy ever to hit number one in the weekly ratings with its first airing.

8. Chat show

A television or radio show in which noted people, such as authorities in a particular field, participate in discussions or are interviewed and often answer questions from viewers or listeners.

Mario will play the father Mike, whose sun Luis hosts a chat show from a studio behind their house.

9. Variety show A show, as on television or in a nightclub, made up of different kinds of acts, as comic skits, songs, dances, etc.

John is chosen by his radio station manager to be the producer of a charity variety show for Aids.

10. Current affairs A genre of broadcast journalism where the emphasis is on detailed analysis and discussion of news stories that have recently occurred or are ongoing at the time of broadcast.

Metro File is Indonesia's most informative morning current affairs program.

11. Headlines The words written in large letters at the top of newspaper articles.

I never read a paper in details; I just glance at the headlines.

12. The editorial A statement of opinion in a newspaper or magazine, or on radio or television, as by an editor, publisher, or owner

Lee is also currently the editorial cartoonist for the Cape Argus, Saigon Town's oldest newspaper, where his work appears daily.

13. Tabloid A newspaper using such a page size, esp. one with many pictures and short, often sensational, news stories.

Tabloids are very fun things to read.

14. Newspaper A publication regularly printed and distributed, usually daily or weekly, containing news, opinions, advertisements, and other items of general interest.

In Britain every national daily newspaper had follow-up stories.

15. Journal A daily register of the ship's course and distance, the winds, weather, incidents of the voyage, etc.

She has published numerous research articles in peerreviewed journals.

16. Comic A picture book with little dialog that is about a super hero or cool story.

20. Censored A person authorized to examine books, films, or other material and to remove or suppress what is considered morally, politically, or otherwise objectionable.

Many parents believe that prime-time TV programs should be carefully censored in order to protect children from accidental exposure to "adult" material.
