Who actually killed Fatima (sa)?

Article By: Raees Mustafa

Intro to this sensitive topic:

Assalamu Alaykum No topic ever in history is as disturbing, and as big as probably this one, which this article briefly discusses. And that's a matter of fact believe it or not, as even death threats and killings have occurred upon the open talk of it. But as far as I know, truth needs no hibernation, whatsoever, truth requires attention, it needs development, it needs growth upon layers of positive health and nourishment! It needs a strong faith to hold on to! And in this article, I examine, who and how exactly, Fatima bint-eMuhammed (Fatima daughter of Muhammed) came about in a place, under the door, and was whipped by one of the idealised personalities of Sunnis. This article, as mentioned, has no means whatsoever, to indicate humility of faith, but in fact has a message to send over to the Ummah of the Prophet, which happens to be full of different sects, claiming different faiths, as true and authentic. That authentic bit will be analysed in this article briefly.

Ibn Abi Shayba;

Ibn Abi Shayba in, al-Musanaf, vol. 7 (Beirut: Dar al-Taj, 1989), p 432 states:

Umar came to the house of Fatima and said: "O Daughter of the Prophet of God! I swear by God that we love no one more than your father, and after him we love no one more than you. Yet I swear by God that that won't stop me from gathering these people and commanding them to burn this house down!
Ibn Abi Shayba (235 AH/ 849 CE) was a prominent Scholar of Ahadith, and was one of the teachers of Imam Bukhari. This is dear readers one serious person being presented from the Sunni Islam, he is known as a symbolising personality from the particular sect!

Ibn Qutayba;
Ibn Qutayba, al-Imama wa al-Siyasa (Egypt: Maktabt al-Tijaria al-Kubra), p 13 states:

Umar said: 'I swear by He who controls the life of Umar, either you come out or I will burn this house down!' The people said: 'Abu'l Hafs, Fatima is also in this house'. Umar replied: 'Even if she is...' Dear readers, these 2 personalities are highly respected in Sunni sect, and have such a peak, where even their names and books are taken with deep respect. Ibn Qutayba (276 AH/889 CE) below are just some of his incredibly famed works:
Dalil al-Nubuwwa or Alm al-Nubuwwa on the Proofs of Prophethood.

Fad.l al-Arab al al-Ajam in praise of the Arabs. Irb al-Qurn, a philological commentary. al-Ikhtilf f al-Lafz. wa al-Radd al al-Jahmiyya wal-Mushabbiha, a refutation of both the Allegorizers and the Anthropomorphists. This slim volume received editions in Egypt. al-Ishtiqq. Is.lh. Ghalat. Ab Ubayd, corrections on al-Qsim ibn Salms Gharb al-H.adth. Jmi al-Fiqh in jurisprudence, dispraised as unreliable by al-T.abar and Ibn Surayj, as was Ibn Qutaybas alAmwl. Jmi al-Nah.w al-Kabr and Jmi al-Nah.w al-S.aghr. al-Jarthm in linguistics. al-Jawbt al-H.d.ira.

Al-Baladhuri
Al-Baladhuri, Ansab al-Ashraf, vol. 1 (Cairo: Dar al-Ma'arif, 1959), p 586 states:

"Abu Bakr sent for Ali so that he can give allegiance but he didn't. So Umar came [to the house] and Fatima met him at the door. She said: 'ibn Khatab you want to burn my door down?' Umar replied: 'Yes, in order to strengthen the religion your father brought.' Al Baladhuri, amazingly has mentioned something very useful, he says that Abu Bakr sent for Ali someone (Umar Ibn Al-Khattab), so that

allegiance would be given to Abu Bakr. But Ali didn't give him that allegiance, and neither did Ali's wife, or close relatives, whom were indeed true supporters of him! Not to forget the words, we read Ibn Al-Khattab ready to burn the door of Fatima, if anyone has the guts and the power, accept the truth. Al Baladhuri AH/ 892 CE) has clearly mentioned it, it's up for you to decide after what Ibn Qutayba and Bukhari's teacher have stated!

Tareekh-e-Tabri
"

" . Almeshkat.net. Retrieved 2012-03-04 states

Umar Ibn al-Khattab came to the house of Ali. Talhah and Zubayr and some of the immigrants were also in the house. Umar cried out: "By God, either you come out to render the oath of allegiance, or I will set the house on fire." alZubair came out with his sword drawn. As he stumbled (upon something), the sword fell from his hand so they jumped over him and seized him." Tareekh-e-Tabri, is, if not, one of the top 5 most authentic and well known books and examinations of History, in the Sunni sect of Islam. It's at the peak of their respect, and I have previously mentioned dozens and dozens of references from this book regarding Imam Ali (as) to AhlulBayt (as)'s ethical beauties. The historian Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari (923 CE) has explicitly mentioned, whom came out, and who didn't, through other Scholars' comparison and study, we see that Umer commanded people to come out, had a discussion with Fatima, and arrested Talha as he tripped over his hidden sword as he came out of the house. But Ali didn't! The translators commentary on this event provides the following background: Although the timing of the events is not clear, it seems that Ali and his group came to know about the
Saqifah after what had happened there. At this point, his supporters gathered in Fatimas house. Abu Bakr and Umar, fully aware of Alis claims and fearing a serious threat from his supporters, summoned him to the mosque to swear the oath of allegiance. Ali refused, and so the house was surrounded by an armed band led by Abu Bakr and Umar, who threatened to set it on fire if Ali and his supporters refused to come out and swear allegiance to Abu Bakr. The scene grew violent and Fatima was furious." -The History of al-Tabari, Volume IX, The Last Years of the Prophet, p186-187, SUNY Press

Sulaym b. Qays
Kitab Sulaym Ibn Qays al-Hilali, Hadith 4, p 48-67 (English Translation) states:

The book Kitab Sulaym b. Qays al-Hilali, which was written by a companion of 'Ali. It describes 'Umar's attack, and describes how Fatimah, the daughter of Prophet Muhammad, was injured, and allegedly beaten, in the attack, resulting in her miscarriage.

Al-Mas'udi
Tarikh al-Masudi, Volume 1-2, p 235-236, Nafees Academy, Karachi, Pakistan (Urdu Translation) states:

They attacked [Ali], burned his door and took him out by force and pressed [Fatima] against the door until she miscarried Muhsin.
He also writes:

While addressing the people Abu Bakr said: of the three mistakes that I committed, one of them is that during my time Fatima's house was broken into.. Al-Mas'udi is another elevated Alim in the Sunni sect, whom has dressed in this book, that Abu Bakr had committed 3 mistakes (through his own sayings), which one of them was indeed burning, or taking part in the burning of Fatima Zahra (sa)!

As for Ali, Abbas and Zubair, they stayed in the house of Fatima until Abu Bakr sent Umar to get them out of Fatima's house and told him: if they refuse, fight them. He took a torch to burn the house and Fatima met him and told him: are you here to burn our house? He said: yes, or you enter what the Ummah has entered (i.e swear allegiance). Dear readers, these are Sunni Alims quoting the truth in their famed books, which surprisingly people don't like to read, or that particular volume, or page! Just because Ali never gave Bay'ah to Abu Bakr, Umer is sent on behalf, to kill and burn the house of Fatima, jst upon the fact that Ali hasn't given the Bay'ah to Abu Bakr! Is Abu Bakr here righteous or Imam Ali (as)?

Al-Tareekh Al Ya'qubi
Tarikh al-Yaqoubi, Volume 2, p 199, Nafees Academy, Karachi, Pakistan (Urdu Translation) states:

..When Abu Bakr and Umar heard the news that a party of the Ansar and the Muhajirin have gathered with Ali at the house of the daughter of the Prophet, they went with a group of people and attacked the house Yet again, History of Al-Ya'qubi is not a message of a novice source, but in fact is considered as one of the greatest talks on what has gone through the lives of Prophet and his companions and AhlulBayt (as). Tareekh Al-Ya'qubi mentions Ali and his house was under the attack of Umer by the orders of Abu Bakr. What more is truth lacking?

Shahrastani
Al-Milal Wal-Nihal Vol. 1, p 56, states:

Umar kicked Fatima's stomach on the day of allegiance until she miscarried and he yelled: "Burn her house and whoever is in it" and in it were Ali, Fatima, al-Hasan and al-Husayn.

Salaa'hud-Din Safhi A-Shafi'i

764 AH Al-Wafi, Bil Wafiyaat Vol. 5, p 347 states:

That day when people were swearing oath of allegiance to Abu Bakr, Umer hit Fatima (sa) on her stomach, resulting her miscarriage of her unborn baby Mohsin.

O Allah! Forgive us all... ...for our bad sins.
