1. LIGHT, COLOUR AND SIGHT

CONTENT STANDARD Understanding, analising, appreciating the knowledge of light, colour and sight LEARNING STANDARD 1.1 Understanding the formation of image by plane mirrors and lenses 1.2 Analysing the formation of image by optical instruments 1.3 Analysing light dispersion 1.4 Analysing light scattering 1.5 Analysing the addition and subtraction of coloured lights 1.6 Applying the principle of subtraction of coloured light to explain the appearance of coloured objects 1.7 Analysing the effect of mixing pigments 1.8 Applying the importance of colour in daily life 1.9 Appreciating the benefits of various types of optical instruments to mankind TEACHING STRATEGIES 1.1 Use plane mirror, convex lens and concave lens to study the characteristics of images formed. Help students to compare and contrast images of distant objects formed by convex lenses and concave lenses. Show students to draw and labeled the formation of image by light rays passing through a convex and concave lens. Guide students to determine the focal length of a convex lens. 1.2 Help students to compare and contrast the mechanisms in focusing and controlling the amount of light that enters humans eyes and a camera. Helps students to explain the structure and function of various parts of the eye using a camera as an analogy. 1.3 Show students to explain what light dispersion is. Ask students to explain through examples how light dispersion of light occurs in natural phenomena. 1.4 Show students to explain what light scattering is. Guide students to explain through examples how light scattering of light occurs in natural phenomena. 1.5 Ask students to identify primary and secondary colours. Help students to explain how addition of primary colours produces secondary colours through activities. Guide students to explain the subtraction of colours by coloured filters through activities. 1.6 Help students to explain subtraction of coloured lights by using the coloured objects around the classroom/college compound. Guide students to explain the appearance of coloured objects under white light and apply the appearance of coloured objects under coloured lights.

1.7 Ask students to use water colour to state the uses of pigments. By knowing the colour produced in mixing of water colour, students will know the colour produced in the mixing of pigments. 1.8 Help students to list the uses of colour in daily life and living things. 1.9 Ask students to relate the inventions of various types of optical instruments and their contributions to mankind SUGGESTED LEARNING ACTIVITIES 1.1 Form a group to carry out an experiment to state the characteristics of images formed by a plane mirror, convex lens and concave lens. Group activities to compare and contrast images of distant objects formed by convex lenses and concave lenses. Ask the students to draw a labeled ray diagram to show the formation of image by light rays passing through a convex lens and draw a labeled ray diagram to show the formation of image by light rays passing through a concave lens. Help students to explain how characteristics of images formed by convex lenses vary with object distance through drawing ray diagrams and determine the focal length of a convex lens. 1.2 Guide students to fill in the blank to identify the parts of optical instruments (camera) involved in image formation. By using graphic organizer help them to compare and contrast the mechanisms in focusing and controlling the amount of light that enters human eyes and a camera. Ask them to explain the structure and function of various parts of the eye using a camera as an analogy. 1.3 Guide the students to carry out an experiment to show the light dispersion and explain through examples how dispersion of light occurs. 1.4 Guide the students to carry out an experiment to state light scattering and give examples of phenomena related to light scattering. Help them to explain how scattering of light occurs in natural phenomena. 1.5 Guide the students to carry out the project to identify primary and secondary colours and explain how addition of primary colours produces secondary colours. Guide them to explain the subtraction of colours by coloured filters through activities. 1.6 Form a group to discuss subtraction of coloured lights by coloured objects. Help them to explain the appearance of coloured objects under white light. Ask them to apply the appearance of coloured objects under coloured lights and state the function of rod and cone cell in the eye. 1.7 Form a group to carry out activities to state what pigment is and list the uses of pigments. Ask them to compare and contrast the mixing of pigments with the addition of coloured lights through activities. Help them to explain through examples the effects of pigments on light and make conclusions about the mixing of pigments. 1.8 Form a group discussion to list the uses of colour in daily life. Ask them to state with examples the importance of colour to living things and justify the importance of colour to life.
