MediaInfo 24h Le Mans 2009

Foreword
Audi competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time ten years ago. The brand recorded eight victories since its first start in 1999 and has made history with the R8 and R10 TDI models. Both won on their Le Mans premiere and represents Vorsprung durch Technik. The Audi R8 introduced the gasoline direct injection TFSI and with the R10 TDI in 2006 a diesel sports car won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time. The Audi R15 TDI follows this tradition: It differs radically from its predecessor and symbolizes technological innovation such as the lithium ion battery as component of an innovative vehicle power supply system. The new Audi R15 TDI won on its premiere in March. Audi aims to continue this winning streak at Le Mans.

Audi at the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hour race

Audi targets ninth victory with new design and strong driver line-up
Audi has contested the Le Mans 24 Hour race since 1999, and has recorded eight victories with factory or customer supported teams in probably the worlds hardest endurance race. Ten years after its Le Mans debut, and to mark its tenth anniversary, the brand with the four rings has a special chance: Just like the Audi R8 in the year 2000 and with the Audi R10 TDI during the 2006 season, the new Audi R15 TDI aims to win the motorsport classic in France at the first attempt. The first diesel race sports car of the second generation made a successful premiere on March 21, 2009 in Florida. Audi won the Sebring 12 Hour race first time out with Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish and another R15 TDI also claimed the third step on the podium.

The Audi R15 TDI was victorious first time out in the Sebring 12 Hour race

Audi Sport Team Joest fields three of the powerful 600 hp plus sports cars in the Le Mans 24 Hour race. Because there is no test day this year and the majority of the track consists of public highways, which must be closed off, the Audi R15 TDI will only make its first exploratory laps of the traditional 13.629 kilometer track during the week of the event between June 8 and 14. Audi prepared itself by running diverse simulations and tests on the track in the Sarthe region. The driver line-up is very familiar with the track, which is a great bonus. Last years winners Dindo Capello/Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish compete with start number 1. Lucas Luhr/Mike Rockenfeller/Marco Werner share the number 2 Audi R15 TDI. Alexandre Prmat starts with two newcomers in car number 3: His French countryman Romain Dumas and the German Timo Bernhard were signed by Audi in April for the 24 Hour race. 258,500 spectators visited the 24 Hours of Le Mans last year and, in doing so, they set a new record for the event existing since 1923. The fans can look forward to a particularly fierce battle this year: No less than 20 LMP1 prototypes, including nine diesel sports cars, are among the 55 starters in the field.

Three race cars from Audi Sport

Approximately 200 employees in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm are primarily responsible for developing and testing the race cars. Audi Sport is affiliated with AUDI AGs Technical Development (TE) and is therefore answerable to Michael Dick, Board Member for Technical Development. Head of Audi Sport since November 1993 is Austrian Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. Audi Sport was restructured and aligned for the future in 2007. Towards the end of 2009 Audi Sport will complete the construction of the first stage of a customer sport center in Ingolstadt for the new GT3 motorsport program. New routes in customer sport Audi has developed three race cars for the 2009 season: The A4 DTM of the R14 plus model range as successor to the R14 for the DTM, the R15 TDI as first diesel race sports car of the second generation and the R8 LMS for international GT3 customer motorsport. While Audi Sport in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm continue to look after the factory motorsport program, the organization for GT3 customer racing was systematically expanded. Absolute responsibility for development is in the hands of Audi Sport in Ingolstadt. At the same time two other sites are integrated in this project: The engine for the race car originates from Gyr in Hungary. The bodyshell construction and finishing of the Audi R8 LMS are carried out by the quattro GmbH in Neckarsulm.

Second generation diesel racing sports car

AUDI AG is the worlds first automobile manufacturer to develop a second generation diesel racing sports car. Audi aims to underline its supremacy and consolidate its expertise in car technology once more at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans with the all-new Audi R15 TDI. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is particularly suited for this: Not only fast but also efficient and economical cars are specifically required for the French endurance classic. Lightweight construction, environmentally friendly drive concepts and well-thought out aerodynamics are the focus of attention at Le Mans just as they are during the development of production cars. For this purpose the regulations intentionally give the engineers plenty of freedom. Audi Sport fully exploited this creative freedom and put a new LMP1 race car on the track that differs significantly from all previous Le Mans sports cars. The R15 TDI has many detailed technical solutions never seen before on

The Audi R15 TDI is radically different to its predecessor the Audi R10 TDI

a sports prototype, says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. To a certain extent we followed entirely new routes. The heart of the R15 TDI is a newly developed V10 TDI engine producing more than 600 hp, with a maximum torque output in excess of 1,050 Newton meters and which reflects the latest version of the TDI Technology invented by Audi. The power unit is more compact and lighter than the twelve-cylinder engine used in the preceding R10 TDI model. The specific fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions could also be reduced. Innovations in the turbocharging and fuel injection areas simultaneously ensure improved engine response. The R15 TDI is also equipped with a new generation of even lighter diesel particle filters as part of a titanium exhaust system. The new sports cars aerodynamics, which play a particularly important role at Le Mans, are extremely refined. In similar fashion to the victorious DTM 2008 Audi A4, the airflow around and through the car was optimized with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Included among the many innovative detail solutions which can be spotted at first glance are a rear wing suspended from the top and a high nose.
The innovative rear-wing mounting improves the aerodynamics

The on board electrics incorporating a new lithium ion battery is one of many innovations

10 11
Audi R15 TDI

Light-weight, environmentally friendly drive concepts and good aerodynamics are just as important at

Le Mans as in production cars

The vehicle electrical system in the Le Mans sports car is entirely new: A lithium-ion battery, as found in some hybrid vehicles, is used for the first time. It is lighter than the conventional battery and supplies a higher voltage. Numerous innovative approaches are also hidden in the chassis and suspension of the diesel sports car. Due to the aerodynamic concept the front and rear suspension have been raised. Thanks to a longer wheelbase and the optimized vehicle weight the R15 TDI is significantly more agile than its predecessor.

Included among the modifications for Le Mans are the modified gear ratios and aerodynamic configuration, which optimizes the relationship between lift (downforce) and drag for the high-speed track. Average lap speeds of 240 kph are achieved here. Audi prepared the R15 TDI for the 24-hour race by completing thousands of test kilometers. The effect of the weight increase by 30 to 930 kilograms initiated at short notice by the organizer was also tested in this phase. Another regulation change, although of less influence, slows the refueling time through the introduction of a reduced section hose. Audi is the only automobile manufacturer to have won the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans with a diesel car. With the R15 TDI we have created the base to be in a position to win also in 2009, says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.

Winning team
Audi starts the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2009 with an exceptionally successful, rejuvenated driver line-up. Since the year 2000 at least one of the current Audi drivers has always mounted the top step of the podium. Eight-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen from Denmark, the two-time winner Allan McNish from Scotland as well as the Italian Dindo Capello, who has won the classic three times up to now, share the cockpit of start number 1. The German trio Lucas Luhr, Mike Rockenfeller and Marco Werner go to race with the start number 2. Werner won the

24-hour marathon at the Sarthe three times in succession between 2005 and 2007, Luhr and Rockenfeller have also scored overall and class victories in other 24-hour races. The Frenchmen Alexandre Prmat and Romain Dumas share the Audi R15 TDI with start number 3 with the German Timo Bernhard. While Prmat competes for Audi in the DTM and sports car since 2007, Dumas and Bernhard make their Audi debut in 2009. The two new signings are Porsche factory drivers and have received special permission from their employer. A winning streak unites them: In 2007 and 2008 they won the American Le Mans Series LMP2 class, in 2008 the Sebring 12 Hour race and since 2007, the Nrburgring 24 Hour race as well.

The Le Mans record holder

Reinhold Joests team numbers among the very best of the longdistance experts in motorsport history: When the team won the 24 Hours of Le Mans last year with Audi it was already the tenth victory for Joest Racing at the Sarthe since 1984. Joest Racing has scored six of these ten victories with Audi. On top of this come 30 victories and four championship titles with the Audi R8 in the American Le Mans Series. Joest Racing has been Audi Sports reliable partner since Audi is involved in sports prototypes. The team has achieved three impressive results in only the last twelve months: During the 2008 season the win at Le Mans and victory in the European based Le Mans Series. On top of this comes overall victory in the 12 Hours of Sebring in March 2009 on the debut of the Audi R15 TDI. Technical Director of the team is Ralf Jttner, who is one of the Managing Directors of Joest Racing GmbH alongside Reinhold Joest. The teams headquarters is in WaldMichelbach in the Odenwald region south of Frankfurt.

The circuit

Unique track
The 24 Hours of Le Mans has been held since 1923. Till today the track has retained its character of being a temporary construction: The Circuit des 24 Heures uses a part of the permanent Circuit Bugatti race track, however, by far the largest part consists of public highways, which are closed-off especially for the race. Tricky bumps, tram-lines formed by heavy trucks and public highway asphalt conditions are only three consequences of this compromise which challenge the drivers. A maximum speed of 405 kph was achieved on the Hunaudires straight in 1988. Since 1990 two chicanes artificially slow this section of track. Nevertheless, the Audi R15 TDI is still quicker than 300 kph in five places: Before the two chicanes, approaching Mulsanne and heading down towards the famous Indianapolis curve and before the Porsche Curves. The amount of full-throttle per lap is over 75 per cent. At an assumed lap time of 3m 30s this would mean that the drivers are at full throttle for 2m 27s.

The lights at a funfair lend Le Mans its traditional but unusual background flair

Audi at Le Mans

Audi Technology leading the way since 2000

No other manufacturer has managed to make a lasting impression within such a short space of time in the Le Mans 24 Hour race as Audi. With eight wins from ten starts the brand with the four rings has demonstrated Vorsprung durch Technik impressively in probably the worlds hardest car race. If you include the victory in 2003 recorded by the Bentley Speed 8, which was equipped by Audi Sport developed TSFI engine, then Audi Technology is unbeaten at Le Mans since 2000. The Le Mans project began in 1997 when Audi searched for a new motorsport discipline after the superior quattro drive was banned from touring car racing. Audi claimed a podium finish in 1999 when the first Le Mans prototype made its debut. At that time two open-topped Audi R8R fielded by Audi Sport Team Joest started the race. Two Audi R8C Coups developed by Audi subsidiary RTN in Great Britain and entered by Audi Sport UK also started but, however, failed to make the finish.

Allan McNish, Dindo Capello and Tom Kristensen recorded the eighth Le Mans victory for Audi last year

Audi entered the

history books

after the direct injection TFSI won in 2001 and the first diesel win with TDI in 2006

The open topped R8R prevailed over the closed R8C in a direct comparison of concepts in 1999

The combined know-how from the R8R and R8C poured into the revolutionary Audi R8, which dominated the sports car scene between 2000 and 2005 and won 63 times in 80 races. Audi remained unbeaten with the R8 at Le Mans between 2000 and 2002. Audi Sport Team Joest won three times in succession, as a result the Le Mans trophy finally found a permanent home in Ingolstadt. Audi was represented by customer teams in Le Mans between 2003 and 2005. Importer teams from Japan and the USA gave the R8 two further victories.

The much acclaimed Audi R10 TDI debuted in 2006. Audi wrote motorsport history following the first race of the powerful 650 hp plus diesel sports car. It was the first victory of a diesel powered race car in the endurance race since its inception in 1923. Audi Sport Team Joest repeated the victory in 2007 and 2008 and therefore achieved a hattrick as it did between 2000 and 2002. In 2009 the Audi R15 TDI celebrates its Le Mans debut. The new diesel sports car won its premiere race the Sebring 12 Hour race (USA) in March.

Audi Le Mans history

10 starts, 8 victories
Ten years ago during the 1999 season Audi started for the first time at Le Mans. Rarely before was an automobile manufacturer so successful in this race. Eight overall victories in ten starts are more than an impressive record, at the end of every one of the ten races an Audi driver stood on the podium. The most successful Audi driver and Le Mans competitor is Tom Kristensen with eight wins.
