English 9 Milkweed Final Project Options

1. Theme Collage a. Create a visual representation of the novels theme. Create a collage using colors, symbols, images, words and patterns to depict the theme. Write a summary of the meaning of the collage (1 page, multiple paragraphs, typed) 2. The Theme Tree a. Create in the shape of a tree using colors, symbols, images, words, and patterns, a visual representation of the novels theme. Write a summary of the meaning of the theme tree (1 page, multiple paragraphs, typed) 3. Puppet Show: a. Make a list of the characters in the novel. Briefly describe the setting, retell the plot in three to five sentences, and in a single sentence state the theme. Use this as the basis for writing the puppet script. Consider finger puppets, sock puppets, felt puppets, using a flannel board, wooden spoon puppets, or paper bag puppets. I also have an app on the iPads that creates the puppet show for you. (You must turn in your written script with you show. The show can be performed in class or taped prior) 4. Mobile Book Report: a. Construct a mobile using a rectangle shape for the base and circles, squares, and triangles to hang from the base of the mobile. Use a hole puncher to make the holes and hang with string or yarn. Use 4 circles, 4 squares, and 4 triangles. You can make the mobile more colorful by copying each of the sides on differentcolored paper. Make sure to use important information and facts on your mobile. 5. Filmstrip Book Report: a. Create a nine panel black and white filmstrip. Use pencil to draw the filmstrip. Then use a fine black marker to trace over the drawings. Erase your pencil lines. i. Panel 1: Should include the title of your filmstrip, your name, and a general picture about the novel. ii. Panels 2 to 5: Should include a four panel plot retell of your novel. Place the panels sequentially. Include two complete sentences describing the illustrations for each panel. iii. Panels 6 & 7: should include illustrations of the theme and symbols of the novel. Include two complete sentences describing the illustrations for each panel. iv. Panel 8: Should illustrate the climax of the novel. Include two complete sentences describing the illustration. 6. Road-Map Book Report a. For this report you will create a timeline in the shape of a road map. The road map will show important events from the novel. i. Include major events that took place, important dates/time periods, pertinent people and details ii. Write one complete sentence for each event iii. Use a piece of paper 12x18 inches or larger iv. Design a road on the paper from beginning to end v. The road could be a winding country road, a busy downtown street, a superhighway, or a design of your choice vi. Use pencil when designing incase you need to make changes vii. Be creative, add a title, use landscaping, add signs along the way (stop signs, yield signs, bridges, detours, etc)

7. Board Game a. Create a board game based on events and characters in the book. By playing your game, members of the class should review what happened in the book. Your game must include the following: a game board, rule sheet and clear directions, events and characters from the story on cards or on the game board. Be creative! 8. Test: a. Make a test for the novel. Include ten true-false, ten multiple choice, and ten short answer/essay questions. After writing the test, provide answers to your questions (a key) 9. Character Party: a. Plan a party for the characters in the novel. In order to do this, complete each of the following tasks: i. Design an invitation to the party which would appeal to the characters ii. Imagine that you are five of the characters in the novel and tell what each would wear to the party iii. Tell what food you will serve and why iv. Tell what games or entertainment you will provide and why your choices are appropriate v. Tell how three of the characters will act at the party 10. Candy Bar Wrapper Letter: a. Write a letter to a friend about the novel, a letter to a character in the book, a letter from one character to another character, or character writing a letter to his/her parents using empty candy bar wrappers as some of the words in the note. You must use at least 8 different candy bar wrappers and write a minimum of 3 paragraphs in the letter on poster board. 11. Gifts to Characters: a. Give characters of the novel tangible or intangible gifts. The most important part is the card that is attached to each gift that explains why the gift was given. Take your knowledge of the characters and apply it to a gift-giving situation as if the character is a dear friend. i. Choose a character you would like to give a gift to and draw or ake the gifts for the character in a box. ii. Write a card fro each gift that includes a minimum of one paragraph explaining why the gift was given. iii. Minimum of 3 gifts (all 3 gifts to one character, or 3 gifts to 3 different characters) 12. Dear Diary: a. Create a diary or journal and write at least 5 entries that might have been written by a character in the novel. The entries should share details about the story that will prove you read the book. 13. Paper Bag Report: a. On the front of a lunch bag, you can draw a scene from the novel. On the back write the names of the main characters, supporting characters, and write about the setting, conflict, and resolution of the novel. b. Inside the bag, place 6 objects (already made, handmade, or drawn)that represent significant events in the novel to share with the class. 14. Symbolic Posters: a. Create a poster box in which a symbol represents characters from the novel. The symbols should tell about the characters personality, wants/desires, looks, and role in the book. Symbols should be made and attached to a poster. Write a brief explanation of what the symbols mean for each character. Place the title and the author of the novel at the top of the poster as the title.
