On 5/5/99, Victoria OWens, OOB 9/7/83, 5409 West
Hinsdale Avenue, Littleton, colorado, was advised of the identity
of the interviewinq Agent, and the nature and purpose of the
interview. She was interviewed in the presence of her Mother,
Mary Ann Owens, OOB 7/3/57. She provided the following
information.
On 4/20/99, Victoria arriVed at school with her brother
at approximately 7:00 a.m. She went to her locker, and then to
the area near the front office where she stood around with her
friends until her first class started. Her last class prior to
first period lunch was science class. After science class, she
went directly to the cafeteria to first lunch period.
When she arrived at the cafeteria, she first went to
table lOC and set her belonqings down. She then went to bUy her
lunch, and returned to her table. Candace CUshman was sittinq at
this table with her. She did~t notice any large duffel bags in
the area that caught her attention or looked out of the ordinary.
From the far side of the cafeteria she heard someone yelling that
someone had been shot. Mr. Sanders and a janitor ran by and
yelled for everyone to get down. She and her friend immediately
got down On the floor under the table. Victoria could noW hear a
few gun shots. Next, she heard people yellinq fOr people to run
and get out. She ran up the stairs towards the library, and
could hear mOre gun shots. When she reached the top of the
stairs, she ran down the math and science hallway with many other
students. They ran out of the school, across Pierce, and into
Leawood park. They were in Leawood Park fOr a few minutes, when
some of the teachers started running towards them, which in turn
caused the students to run farther into the neighborhood. She
ended up in a student's home, identified as Lindsey Blair.
She didn't know who the Trench Coat Mafia (TCM) were,
so she didn't see Harris or Klebold at the school monday or
tuesday. After beinq shown photographs of Klebold and Harris,
she still maintained that she had not seen either of them on
monday or tuesday.
Although Victoria had heard of the TCM, she never had
interaction with any of them, nor did she know anyone that had.

Renee K. Paavilainen, OOB OS/23/1983, 5445 West Caryl
Place, Littleton, Colorado, telephone (303)932-0045, was
interviewed at her home in the presence of her mother, Kathy
Paavilainen, by Special Agent (SA) Ricky V, Wright regarding the
incident that took place on 04(20/1999 at Columbine High School.
After being advised as to the identity of the interviewing agent
and the nature of the interview, Paavilainen provided the
following information,
At approximately 11,10 am, paavilainen got out of
Spanish class, taught by Mr. Brookfield, and went directly from
the foreign language department to the cafeteria. Paavilainen
set her bookbag at the cafeteria table (marked E on~agram ~
sketch), and went~o get her lunch, Jasmine Schell, Sarah Sales,
and Amber Dickson were still seated at the table marked E, when
Paavilainen went to get lunch. Sarah Brown-was standi~ on
Paavilainen's left in the serving line and David Mesch was
standing on Paavilainen's right,
While standing in line, Paavilainen saw the students in
the cafeteria get down under their tables. Paavilainen remained
standing even after everyone started yelli~g to get down.
Paavilainen recalls that Matt Katzenmeier/was one of the st~dents
telling people to get down. Paavilainen could hear popping
noises outside. Alter a couple of minutes, everyone started
running and Paavilainen, Mesch, Brown, Dusty Hoffsch.~eider, and
Ryan Deatherage ran in a rOom behind the serving line an the east
end of the cafeteria~ They could still see into the cafeteria
from the room and could see students running up the stairs, into
the auditorium, and into the bathrooms.
While people were fleeing} Paavilainen thought she saw.
through a window in the room, one of the gunmen run east by the
serving line. He was short, had brawn hair, and was wearing a
black jacket. He was not wearing a mask or hat. From
Paavilainen's ~~gle, she could not tell if the jacket was long.
Paavilainen did not see anything in his hands and did not
recognize him. Paavilainen thought he was firing while running.
Paavilainen thinks that Sarah Brown also saw the gunman through
the window. After about a minute in the room, Paavilainen and
the other students in the rOOm ran in the back door of the

auditorium. Paavilainen went through the auditorium and out the

northeast door. When she came out the auditorium into the main
hall, she could hear shots on the other side of a set of double
doors, which divided the main hall just west of the auditorium
exit. i?aavilainen ran east down the main hall and saw same gym
students coming from the direction of the gymnasium into the main
hall. Paavilainen recognized one of the students as Mike Doyle.
Paavilainen continued down the main hall and turned north down
the hall by the counseling center. Paavilainen passed David
Mesch's mom, who workS in the student offices. She was directing
students by her to the exit at the end of the hall. Paavilainen
did nat notice if the student offices were shot up when she ran
by. Once outside. Paavilainen ran around the tennis courts and
then to Clement Park.
i?aavilainen was in ehe cafeteria ehird period for
approximately 10 minutes to see her sister, Jenny Paavilainen.~
Jenny i?aavilainen was sitting ae table T on ehe diagram sketch
and their brother, Mike Paavilainen was at table E. Jenny and
Mike Paavilainen were not in the cafeteria during lunch.
Paavilainen estimates that there were 50 students in the
cafeteria thi~d period. Paavilainen does not remember seeing any
large duffle bags sitting in the cafeteria during lunch or third
period. Paavilainen did not know Eric Harris or Dylan Klebold.
The only associate of Klebold and Harris that she knows is Brooks
Brown. Brown has given no indication to Paavilainen that he knew
anything about the shootings.
Paavilainen does net have an Internet screen name. The
day of the shooting, Paavilainen was wearing blue jeans and a
white shirt.

On 6/1/99 I contacted 16 year old ellS student Renee Paavilainen at

her home phone number of 303-932-0045. I advised Renee I needed to
clarify some of the information she gave during her original
interview with FBI agent Ricky Wright on 5/14/99 regarding the
Columbine shooting. Renee agreed to speak with me.

I asked Renee about the person she saw ",.nning towards the inside
cafeteria steps after most of the students had evacuated the area on
4/20. She estimated the time to be around 11:30am when she was
hiding in the kitchen cafeteria behind the serving line with 4 other
students. She was hearing "pop, pop, pop' noises, which she believed
was gunfire coming from the west side of the cafeteria. She believed
the noises were outside, but could not be sure.

As she sat in the kitchen hiding, she witnesses a lone white student
running towards the inside stairs in the cafeteria about 5-7 feet
away from her. The student was wearing a black jacket, unknown if it
was open or zipped up, or if it had a hood, and the length of this
jacket was unknown. The serving line countertop blocked a portion of
her view. The student had ear length brown hair, no hat. She
believed he was about 5' 6" tall. She did not see this student
carrying any type of a weapon, as she did not see his hands. She
originally told Agent Wright that she believed the student was firing
a weapon while running. Renee believed this because the pop, pop,
noise became louder as the student ran by them towards the sceps.
She only saw this student for a second as he quiCkly ran by, and at

no time did the student look towards her. Renee did not recognize
him.

Renee recalled that her friend, Sarah Brown who was hiding next to
her said "d.i.d you see that". They believed based on the noise that
the student was firing a weapon. Renee believes that Sarah has been
interviewed by Investigators.

interview. He was interviewed in the presence of his Mother,
Kimberlee Palmetar, DOB 7/19/55. He provided the following
information.
On 4/20/99, Daniel arrived at Columbine High School at
approlCUlately allO a.m. He went ee his locker, and then to his
first olass, which was computer creativity. His last olass prior
to first lunch period was biology. Bioloqy let ou~ at
approximately 11:10 a.m., and be then went directly to first
period lunch. He bouqht his lunch and sat at table W. The
fOllowing individuals were also seated at this table with Daniel.

Daniel at quickly, and was sitting talking with his friends, when
he saw several people along the window saau on the wes~ side of
the cafeteria stand up and look out the windows. He looked out
and saw and individual dressed in a blaCk trench coat, blaCk ski
mask, approximately 6'0"-6'2" poin~ a sho~qun at stUdent near the
ou~side stairs and subsequently shoot the student. This occurred
not DlOre than 10-15 feet from where Daniel was sittinq. Ha then
heard a teacher yel11nq "get down". He 90t down, and began
craWling towards the elevator. He crawled the entire way to the
elevators, and entered the elevator. The elevator ascended, and
opened up near the library, but when the doors opened, there was
smoke in the hallway, so none of the students 'lot off the
elevator. The elevator went back down to the cafeteria, and he
exited. From the time he beqan crawling, he was hearing gun
shots. Hart he ran into the aUditorium, and both 1(>:. Andres
Jr.and Sr. were there. He could hsar shots and explosions from
the aree of the l1l:>>:ary. A janitor was also in the auditorium,
and after about ten minutes, he opened the door, and the students
all ran down the foreiqn language hallway, and exited the

Deniel didn't see either Harris or Xlebold on monday or
tuesday. Daniel was part of a fantasy base.ball leaque. This was
a pretend baseball leaque, in which sOlIe ColUDll:line stuc!ents
played l:oa11 games, and traded basel:lall players over the computer.
Dylan Klebold was also a part of this league. On a few
ocoaisions, Daniel reoently spoke to Xlebold on the telephone
aI:oout 'trading" a base.ball player. lie never socialiZed with
Xl.bold nor talked about anything other than fantsy baseball.
Daniel never talked to him at school or socialized with him. A
student named Chad Loughlin set up the fantasy baseball league.

On 04-26-99 contact was made with Stephanie Panslni, (09-20-1983), at her residence at 6654 W Geddes
Ave, Littleton, CO, #303-979-6021

Pansini advised being assigned to 1" lunch (1115-1145\, and an 04-17-1999 had arrived in the lunchroom
at approximately 1120 and bought a hot lunoh She was seated at table 'DO' (near the condiment table), as
indicated on the 04-22-1999 sketch by SIA DiRito. Present at her table were, 1. Laurel Salerno; 2. Erin
Fitzgerald, 3 Meagan Steckley; 4, Shelley Jenkins; 5. Elizabeth Kwernlaland. She noted silting at
generally the same table every day, with the same friends.

She firsl became aware of problems at the school, when an adult male carrying a portable radio ran Into
the lunchroom from the area of the south coors belling everyone to 'get down under the tables". She did not
know what the problem was until she saw a person wearing a long black coat running outside the south
windows, and she heard what she believed to be gun shots. Students began rJnning In waves from the
lunchroom up the stairs towards the library aM she followed, eventually entering the auditorium and exiling
the north door and running into the park and continued north away from the school. She did not confront
Munmen as she exited the school.

Wto exiting the lunchroom she saw no suspicious activity near her table, and she saw neither Identified
gunman In the lunchroom. He noticed no suspicious bags or other items near her table

Reporcing investigator, P.J. Doyle; is a commissioned peace

officer employed by the District Attorney in the First Judicial
District: serving Jefferson and Gilpin Counties. I am currently
assigned to assist in interviewing witnesses from Columbine High
SchooL

On April 2.8, 1999 I spoke to 9th grade student Matthew Adam

Parsons.

Matt's father was preSent during the interview.

Matt told me the following:

 He was right outside of the cafeteria, sitting on the cement
benches. He heard about 10 bangs, and didn't, at first, think much
of it. He then heard someone screaming and went towards the parking
lot, (See aiagram). He saw a tall person standing on the hill by
the fance. CSae diagram). This person was wearing a black trench
coat. Mate did not notice anything in this personls hands. He said
the guy appeared to be wearing all black. The guy was just standing
there. Matt did not recognize this pe:san. Matt said that he saw a
girl named Ann Marie (unknown last name), who appeared to be shot.
She was bleeding from her stomach. She was screaming that she was
paralyzed and couldn't move.

Matt ran in to the cafeteria. He walked by table E and people

we~e asking wha~ was going on, He heard more shots. A janitor and
Mr. Sanders were ~~ning around telling people to get down. He got
down. Anthony Shoals was behi~d Matt. They crawled to cable K~ and
about 30 seconds later I he heard more shots. Mat-c and Anthony
crawled to the area of tables E,F,G or H and were under one of these
tables for about :5 seconds I and then: crawled to the stairs. Matt::
said cha~ Anthony was still behind Matt. Everybody started ~~shing
towards the stairs. He and Ant.cony did/ too, They turned lefr: (
went down the hall, and out of the doors / across t.he street and
towards the park. He was still wieh Anthony. At the park, he heard
more shots. Lots of kids were scattering through the neighborhood.
Mate and Anthony ended up at Lindsey Blair's house. A bunch of
people were there.

Matt remembered seeing the following people at Lindsey Blair's

house: Li~dsey Daling/ Loren Moul~on and Joe West. He doesn t 1

remember the others. He was in the hQuse for abut lO minutes. He

went outside and looked for people. He went by a car that had a
radio on and people were gathered aro~~d it. The radio was talking
about the school. Some grown ups were around, and said to go to
Leawood Elementary School. Matt went to Leawood with Heather
Whaling and they stayed there.

 Matt said that his back pack is a green Jansport with a brown
bottom. Jansport is colored in red. In it was a book, a p Lanne r-
with a pencil in the spirals. He had a math spiral or a folder, his
social studies stuff and a protractor and compass and a black pen.

Matt said that Dylan lClabold was in his gum class. He said
that Dylan was pretty nice to Matt. One time Dylan bashed in to
Matt during soccer and apologized t o Matt. Matt said that Dylan
seemed prett.y ncrma L. He s had. no internet, email or video

experiences with Dylan.

Matt said that he'd heard of the trench coat mafia from his
brother ( Eric Parsons. Eric had told him that a mafia. cou Ldn ' t
consist of three people.

Matt said that he hadn' c noticed Dylan lately, but had no t i ced
Dylan in the past wearing a trench coat.

Mat~ aaid that there was another kid he though~ may have been a
meniber of the TCM. He didn t know this person 1 s name.
t He is tall
with crooked teeth and wore eye Shadow the first week of school. He
has dark hair, short hair that didn't seem combed. Matt didn't see
this guy en the day of the incident. Eric told Matt that he had
seen this guy the day of the incident at the comic shop en Ken Ca~fl
and Pierce! by the Pizza Hut or Lit~le Ceasars.

OBSERVATION / INVESTIGATION:
On April 27, 1999 I was assigned to interview Denae Pedersen who is a
student at Columbine High School and may have been in the cafeteria during
the shootings,
On April 28th at 1045 hours I arrived at 6264 West Caley Avenue to
interview Denae Federsen, venae advised that she is a junior and was in
the area of the cafeteria on April 20th, Ms. Pedersen reported that she
was in the exit hall way, in front of the student store, in the south-ease
corner of the cafeteria area. She continued to say that she was starting
to walk into the cafeteria to join her friends at a table when Mr. Sanders
came running by and told her to get under the table which she did. Ms,
Pedersen advised at first she thought it was a fight but realized it was
more serious by the way everyone was acting. She advised that a friend of
hers, Brad Pesicko, came running by and ran into another girl knocking them
both to the floor, Denae advised that Brad never acted like that. When
told to leave she entered the lower level of the auditorium and went
upstairs on the north side of the auditorium to the upper level, As she
approached the north door of the aUditorium that leads to the north hall
she obe~;ed a group of students who were JUSt opening the door. At this
moment there were gun shots in the north hall and the door was closed, and
the group of students started back to the south auditorium door. As they
approached the deor there were more gun shoes in the south hall so the
group went back to the north door and out into the north hall, She
reported that the group of students would run then stop. At this point she
found a friend, Brian Rathbun. and took ahola of him. She said that she
told Brian not to let go of her and they both ran out of the main enterance
across the teacher parking lot, and into clement park. Denae said that

they went to Aaron Brown's car an~ drove to Aaron's house. While at the
Brown house Aaron'S brother Brook arrive~ hysterical saying he knew what
was going to happen. Brook reported that juSt minutes before the shooting
started he encountered Eric Harris, who tol~ him to leave because he liked
him. Denae said that she did cot see who was shooting or anyone with guns.
Denae reported that she has a friend, Evin Onis, (correct spelling
unknown) who dresses in gothic fashion but she does not believe he is a
member of the Trench Coat Mafia. Denae advised that she does not associate
with the group and does not have contact with its members. Denae advised
that she had hear~ nothing that would have indicated that there would be
trouble at the school on April 20th an~ she could provide no information as
to who was making the bombs. She adVi~ed that sh does not personally know
either Eric Harris, Dylan Klebold, or . Denae could provide
no further information and the intervi was concluded at 1120 hours.

INVESTIGATION;
On 04-29~99. 31 about 1100 bcurs. I responded 7321 South Webster Street, where I contacted witness Andy Perlmenn and his
parents. Dennis and Marilyn Petlmann, I advlsedthe family that f was there to interview witness Andy Perfmana in reference
to the incident at Columbine High School on 04-20-99_

I first showed witness Andy Perlmann a map of the cafeteriaarea at Columbine High Scheel and asked himwhore he had been
seared. He advised he was seated at table #HH with several of hi' friends. He said he was present with Tyler Berch. Jesse
Friedman, Ian Patrick. Keith Nackerud, Joshua Brinkley. Ashley Pumley, Jackie Carol.TIm Vaca, Brianna Lurnleu, and a person
he knowsonly as "Breck," Witness Perlmann said he.arrived in the cafeteria on 04.-20..99, at about 1020hours, and his friends
came into the cafeteriaat approximately 1110 hours, Wimess Perlrnann said he does nor recall where any ofhlS friends were
sittingaround the table, and he is not sure if he remembered all of the names that were there. He said there were several people
there. Witnes Pertmann said they were talking and doing their homework together,

W1IDess Perimannsaid he heard "pops" in the- area: of the cafeteria, unknown if it was outside or inside, and his first thought was
that somebodywas playing a senior prank on the school. witness Perlmann said suddenly he heard somebody yell to get down

to .11 of thepeople in the cafeteria. '0 tileygot undertheir tables. Wimess Perlmann said at this point he heard moreshots. and
he saj~ ever:body but one person inthecafeteria was down on thefloor undemeath a table. Hedidnotknow who this one person
was that stayedseated at a table. other than to say-it was a maleofstudent age, Witness Perlmann said he heard what he believed
to be bombsexplodingoutside of the school. and then somebodysaid. "Oet out of here," so he got up with some tiiends and they
ran up the stairs toward the upper level of the school. Perlmann said he was running, and once arriving at the top of the stairs,
he heard what he estimated to be between 15 to 30 shots. and believedthey were in the cafeteria. Witness Perlmannsaid at the
top of the stairs he turned left and he tan down the hall and said he kept running until he was DUt of the school. He then went
across the street from Columbine High School to Leawood Park. Witness Perlrnann said while he was at the top of the stairs.
he did not hear any noises, any voices. screams, or any other unusual noises coming from the area of the Library.

less Perlmannsaid while he was in Leawood Parkwith rome ofbis friends that he was there approximately 10to 15minutes,
and then gunshots were heard comingfrom the area of the school. Witness Perlmannsaid he did not know if they werecoming
from inside the scbool or outside the school, nor did he know if the shots were directed :u him or his friends in Leawood Park.
Witness Periraanr said from Leawood Park. after the shots. he left southboundon Pierce. and went to the King Soopers store
at Ccelmine and Pierce where he called his father

I showed witnessPerlrnannphotographs of the blue backpackand also oftbe propane tank, Wimess Perlmann said he did not
see eitherof these items in the cafeteria. I asked ..imess Perlmann ifhe left anythinginsidethe cafeteria.and he 'aid yes. he left
his backpack{blueJanSport) on me tabie where he had put it upon entering the cafeteria, and left it when he ran out.

1asked witnessPerlman!' if'be knew any of ,Ju, studentsthat called themselves the Trench Coat Mafia. He said he did not know
any of them by name until this incidenr; however, he knew of Dylan Kleboldbecause Klebold was very tall (6'03" to 6'04"), and
would see him in 'he hallway from time to time, He stated Klebold was usuallyalone, and he did no! recall seeing him with any
other people.

Witness Perlman." also told me that during the time period of January'hroogh Ma) of 1998,he was a classmate of Joe Stair at
ColumbineHigh School in a wood shop class. Witness Perlmann said Stair always wore his trench coat. however. once in the
wood shop class he would take the coat off so it would not getcaught in an) of the toots. Witness Perlmann said he recallsthat
Stair wouid come to class with a book that he called."The Devil's Bible." He said Stair also had a patch On his trench coat of
the Ace of Spades with a skull on it, and said That Stair had mentioned that he worships the devil, He could not provide any
f""her information about Stair.

Witness Dennis Perlmann and wimess Marilyn Perlmann advised me that their older daughter, witness Jennifer Penrnann.
believes she had talked to Kleboldin the past; however.she was net sure Wimess Marilyn Perlmannalso said witnessJennifer
Perlmann is famniar with Stair. I lefta business card with them,and they said they wouldhave witness Jennifer Perlmann call
mewhen she get the message. ! was unableto call her due to the factshe is incollegeup in Greeley at the University of Northern
Cotoredc

l asked witness Andy Periman" ifhe uses the internet. and he said yes. he did. 1as-ked him what his screen name was. and he
said he did OO! have a screen name. His father. witness DennisPerlmann. also said that this was true. and they did not usea chat
line as well.

I left a businesscar-d with witness Andy Perlmann and his parents,and advised them that if they needed some counselingand
wanted to arrange through the JeSO Victim Advocate. '0 call me and I wouldarrange that for them.

This lead was received on May 7, 1999 without any information (phone or address) on
Lydia Petry (aka: Dee Dee Petry). She was reportedly a cafeteria worker the dayof the
incident at Columbine HS.

I researched the local directory, spoke withschool security. spokewithJefferson County

(R·ll Schools, spoke withR-I Communications, spoke with Food Service and the
Manager of Columbine HS Cafeteria. It appears thar LydiaPerrywas not a parent,
security worker. cafeteria aid, food service worker, volunteer or evenemployed by R-l
Schools.

I thendiscovered that Robert Petry. TCMAssociate, hasa sister named Lydie whomay
have been in tile cafeteria at the time of the shooting.

INYiSTIGATION:
On 05/03/991 was assigned Information Control Number DN2513 for follow up investigation.
The narrative stated that Jeremy Orban had been in the cafeteria at approximately 7:00 a.rn, The
source was Brandi Wiseman, a studentat Columbine High School.
On 05/04/99 at 1130hours I met with Jeremy Orban and his mother Joann Sander-Ceder! at
their residence. AlsO present at the residence were two other Columbine students. Braden Pesusich
and Ali Boukhalfa. Both Pesusicn and Boukhalfa were present in the cafeteriawith Jeremy Orban
and they were also interviewed,
Orban stated that he walked 10 schoolon 04/20/99 andthat he arrived at approximately 0710
hours and that he entered the schccl through the main entrance then wenlto his locker and down to
..... commons or cafeteria area. He sllid he met a girl named Can, last name unknownand Brandi

Wiseman. He said they were In the commons for approximately 10 to 15 minutes before first hour.
Orban said that he didn't noticeanything unusual in the cafeteria at that time. He didn't noticeany
unattended duffel bags or backpacks, although he said he wasn'treally looking for any.
Orban left the commons area and went to Spanish on the lower level for first hour. He left
Spanish and secondhour went to chemistry on the main level. forthird hour he went to history on the
main level and after third hour he went to his lockerand then to fourth hour across from the
gymnasium, his math class. He then left his math class and went to the A lunch. He said that when
he arrived he got in line to purchase food and after he purchased his pizza he went to sit at his table.
He identified the table that he was sitting at as table AA. He said that the other people at his table
were Braden Pesuslch, Ali Boukhalfa, Seth Biggi, Ian Hales, NickRomynyshin, Rani Rao, Ryan Baris
and Terry, last name unknown.
Orban said that he sat down at the table, took two bites of this pizza when he heard a janitor
comein through an outside door yelling for everyone to get down. He said that he looked out the
windows and saw a person who he believes was Dylan Klebold shot a male student in the leg and
throw a pipe bomb into the parking lot. He said that he and otherstudents then got under the tables.
He said that then he and other students began running towards the stairs and as they ran Orban
could hear what he described as booms thinking In retrospect that these were pipe bombs. Orban
said that as he approached the stairs he could see that the stairwell was quite crowded and there
was a teacherin the hallway by the food cart directing them down the hall. He said that he ran down
the hallunlil he had to make a right and followed that hallway down to the last classroom. He said
there were numerous students going into that classroom and there were severalteachers in the class
with them. He said thai after several minutes the teachers heardthe shooting from what he believes
was upstairs and he, at the direction of Ihe faculty, ran out the $Outh exit doors from this classroom,
across the student parking 101 and to a house at Polk Street and Pierce. He said they went in the
house for a short time and a student there had a cell phone and he was able to call his mother, He
• -'laved he was able to contact her al approximately 11:45 a.m. Orban had been separated from his

friends at the table when he lell the table. Orban did not leave anything behind In the cafeteria. He
said he had been wearing brown corduroy's and a green T shirt. He said he took his backpack with
him when he left. Orban said that he noticed nothing unusual in the cafeteria prior to the Incident
beginning, that he didn't notice any large duffel bags or backpacksthat appeared to be unattended.
However, he stated that he probably wouldn't notice such an item because It Is common practice for
the students to drop their packs and go get food. using their packs to save a spot. Orban said that
he was familiar with the trench coat mafia only by name and knew that they were kids that were
trench coats, but had no run In's with them and could provide no further information on the trench
coat mafia. He also did not know Eric Hams or Dylan K1ebold. Orban did not know of any students
who were building pipe bombs or stockpiHng weapons. He does not have his own web site and does
not have Internet access at home.
I next Interviewed Braden Pesusich. He Indicated he had not been In the cafeteria any other
time during the day and had gone to the cafeteria for the A lunch. He said that he had come from the
upstairs into the cafeteria, had gone to the lunch line and then made his way to the table when the
Incidentbegan. He said that he observed people standing up by the west windows and felt perhaps
there was a fight. He said that he had a fairly clear view of the kid running up the hili, trying to run up
and get away. when he heard more shots. He said that he then observed what he thought were pipe
bombs being thrown into the parking lot. He said that he saw one of the gunmen by the windOW
shooting down towards the ground. He could not see what the gunman was shoaling at. The only
description ha could remember was that this gunman had long curly hair and ,n retrospect thinks it
was Dylan Klebold. He said about this time people were starting to run for the stairs to the cafeteria.
He said that he ran along the south wall and that he saw a girl screaming. He thought he name
might be Kim or Patty Blair. He couldn't be sure becausethe Blair's are twins. He said that the girl
was screaming "Ann Marle, Ann Marie". He said that shortly past thiS girl that was screaming. was a
male student who was covered With blood. He said he didn't appear to be injured, but he had blood
~" over him. He said he next focused on the stairs and saw there was a large crowd there and ran

the hall. but made a Mght tum by the Special Ed hall. He said as he ran past the stairwell he could
hear a rapid sertes of shots from where he believed was efther behind him or upstairs, He said that
he then ran down the corridorpast the Special Ed classroom and out of the building. Pesuslch said
that he took his pack with him and he was wearing khaki colored pants and a dark blue T shirt and
left nothing behind in the cafeleMa. Pesusich said that he was familiarwith the trench coat mafia only
by name but had no run In's with them and could provide no further Information on the trench coat

I also interviewed Ali Boukhalfa, who also stated he had only been In the cafeteria during the A
, 'ch end that he had come from upstairs, He said he had been in line and was making his way
back to the table when the incident began. He heard a commotion and a loud thud outside the west
windows. He got up and saw a suspectwith what he believed was a shotgun. He observed him
shoot the gun but did not know where he shot it into, He then saw what he thought was a pipe bomb
go flying through the air and then the suspect ran to the north side and up the stairs. He then heard
several loud bombs as he was gelting down. He said that when the students began to run out of the
cafeteria he ran for the stairs. He went up the stairs and then directlyeast out the southeast main
entrance and across the straet into the park. He said that as he was running out the corridorhe
could still hear gunshotswhich he believed were coming from behind him. Boukhalfa could not
identify the person he saw with the shotgun and could provide no further information as to what the
person might have been wearing.
Boukhalfa left nothing behind, he was wearing jeansand a dark grey T shirt with a marbled
lop. Boukhalfa said he was familiar with the trench coat mafia and had seen them around, He also
did not know Eric HarriS or Dylan Klebold but that in retrospect he had seen Kiebold around the
.A~ool. He had no direct involvement with the trench coat rnafla, but had a friend named Brell

Sullivan who had transferred to Englewood several months ago for other reasons. Sullivan had
bumped into Klebold and they got into a pushing contest Boukhalfa received this information
second hand and did not havepersonal knowledge of the incident. He could only add thatthe trench
coatmafia members seemed rather odd llInd he stayed away from them. He did not know of any
students whO were building pipe bombs or stockpiling weapons and noticed nothing unusual in the
school the day this incidentoccurred. He does not have a web page and could add nothing further.
BothPesusich and Boukhalfa verifled the students that were at their table. Theyalso
indicated on the mapsprovided their routes into and out of the bUilding. Orban indicated his
anlrance in a solid orange and his exit in a doted orange. Boukhalfa did his entry in a solid green and
exit in a doted green and Pesusich did his entry in a solid red and his exit in a doted red•

Once 'he was released frommath sheproceeded down intothe cafeteria for her scheduled lunchperiod. She believed she arrived
at abourl l l J hours. I provided Meghan a map of the cafeteria area and asked if she could identify which tableshe was seared
at. Meghan identified table !l as the tableshe was seated at. I asked Meghan if sheobserved two large dufflebagsor sports type
bags which were located in the central core area of the cafeteria. f described one being blue in color and the other being a
reddish/orange. She advised that she did not see those two items. Meghan told me that also seated at table (I were: her friends.
Julie Naslund,Nicole Ray, Naomi Lucero, and Lauren Beyer. Meghanwas unable to provide me any telephonenumbers for
those mends of hers.

Meghanplaced her navy blue Abercrombie performance backpackon the chair at the table and then proceededinto the food
service line, She returned to the table a short time later and pro<:eeded to tell me that normallythe cafeteria is real noisy She
statedjust as she sal down she recalls the cafeteria gOI real quiet. She also explainedthar she saw a couple of janitors near the
food service line and that they weretalking on theirradio" pacingbackand tbt1ll and they motioned 10 the students to getdown.
Meghan advised that at first she thought this was sometype of a seniorprank. but not knowing what was goingon she got under
the table, A short time later,severalof theoilier students startedto get out fromunderthe tablesand stand up, at which timeone
of the janitors yelled at the students to leave the school.

Meghanadvised that all the students within the cafeteriastarted to the east side of the cafeteria and moved up the stairs to the
main levelof the school. Meghancontinued to run eastdown the math/science hallway, where she exited from the building and
wentto Leawood Park After assembling 10 Leawood Park. she told me that she went to her mend, Lindsy Blair's house.which
is Iocated in the area of Arbor Avenue and Marshall Way, Meghan was asked if she saw any gunmen while she was at
Columbine High School or after she exited from the building. She stated that she did not see any gunmen at all.

Meghan was asked if sbe remembers about whatlime she exiled from Columbine High School. At this point Megbaes mother,
Par. told me that she believedshe got a cal! fromMeghan around IlJO! 1140 hoursand that Meghanhad told her what had gone
on, at which timeshe respondedto Lindsy's house, whereshepickedMeghan up. Meghanwasasked if she heardany gunshots

When Meghanwas asked if there was any additional information she would liketo pass on to me, she explained to me thai she
was speakingwith a friendof hers by the name of Ashley Egelend, (303)913·3991, who told herthat her sister, Heather Egeland,
was at Columbine High School on the incident date and had just exited into the gym hallway when she sa w Eric Harris and a
second unidentifiedmale Both parties were dressed in black and they were carrying some type of weapons, Meghan told me
that Heather identified Eric Harris as being one of the individuals, and she identifiedthe second party as being somebody other
than Dylan Klebold, She couldn't remember who Ashley told her the other gunmen was. Meghan told me thatthere wasa rumor
about school that the bombs that were placed by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were scheduled to go off at 1120on April cO,
1999.and once 'he bombs wouldgo off that the fire alarmswould sound in the school, at which time the students would come
running out the doors and that Eric and Dylan would be waitingoutside. where they would start shooting 'he students. Since
the bombsdid not go oft' as scheduled.Eric and Dylan went back in the school where they started shooting students. Meghan
cannotconfirmedwhere this rumorstarted. At the completion of my interview. I asked Meghan to diagramwhereshe wassitting

District Attorney in the First Judicial District serving Jefferson and Gilpin Counties I am
currently assigned to assist ininterviewing witnesses from Columbine High School.

On May 14, 1999 I spoke to Katelyn SuePlace, a Freshman

Kate told methe following

She went to all her classes int he morning. She went to the cafeteria for 4th hour It's her
offhour She went and sat by the student store and didn't see anything unusual

During lunch she waited to meet some friends, Brittany Tyacke}Brittany ~d Kate went V
into the cafeteria and sat at table L She was sitting with Brittany, Sarah Gillings, Mary Campbell
and Heather(unknown last name. She saidthattherewere someothersthere, but she couldn't
remember who it was

When Katewas puttingher back packdown, she said that a waveof kidsduckeddown
under the tables She thought it was a senior prank Shegot down and then gal up on her knees.

She saw a person coming down the stairs on the outside She could see through the windows
He was shooting a rifle He was tall and she described his height as "lengtby" He had a long
shaped face He was wearing a trench coat He was not wearing a mask She doesn't remember
if he was wearing a hat or not, but said that he had short hair She couldn't see below his knees

He was holding the rifle in his right hand He was just pointing and shooting at people at

the outside commons area She couldn't see his left hand. She said that she didn't notice if he
had anything on or about his trench coat

Kate said, "It I'm almost positive of it. I remember looking him dead
in the eye He was in my debate class for a linle bit either the end of last semester or the
beginning of this one"

Kate said that she hadn't s e e n _ a r l i e r than that, that day She hadn't seen
biro on Monday She wasn't at the school over the weekend She said that she may have seen
biro the week before, bur she wasn't sure She said that she would have just said, "Hi"

Kate said that, "Dylan kind of lcoks l i k e . but Dylan doesn't have the long face
_ e e t h are messed up and he was smiling and r saw his teeth then" Kate said that she has
since seen pictures of'Dyan Klebold and Eric Harris, and she said, "It's not one of them "
(Referring 10 the person she saw shooting out on the outside commons)

Kate said that she looked a t _ f o r about 30 seconds until he looked at her and
he smiled She ducked back down. She remembers him shocting Ann Marie She said that Tony

Kate looked and saw Jason trying to help A'lI1 Marie, dragging her away from _ to
the Side She didn't know what Tony and Jason's girlfriend were doing at this time

Kate said that she wanted to know if everyone outside was okay, but saw one or two boys
shooting at the ground in the Senior parking lot She said she saw the back of a black trench cost.
This person had ilis back to Kate and she couldn't describe him She thought there may have
been another boy, but couldn't describe biro or articulate why she thought there may have been
another boy She said that she didn't think the person shooting in the Senior parking lot was
Robert Perry This person seemed shorter She couldn't see what kind of gun this person had

Kate said that when the shooting was outside, she could hear the shooting She couldn't
say how many shot; had been fired exactly, but thought it was about S to 10 She said that when
the shots were fired in the Senior parking [or, it was like little bullets spraying She was unable to

give me a number of shots she heard and saw

Kate said that she knew Dylan from school, she's met him, butjust talked to him a little
bit She doesn't remember what they talked about. She remembers distinctly, him telling her that
anything he does in life, he want to get something about it She didn't remember what else they
talked about She said it was nothing profound He didn't scare her and they didn't talk about
anything weird. She said that he seemedlike a follower, but couldn't articulate why she thought
that. She said that she would speak to Dylan or see him in the halls once or twice a week.

Kate said that she met Eric Harris twice Eric had helped her with her geometry
homework while at school

Kate saidthat she neversaw Dylan or Eric outside of school. She said that she's never
seen any of the TCM out of school, and she doesn't hangout with them. Kate is friends with
Jamie Schoffner, at school Katie would talk to Jamie and some guys (names unknown) who
wore trenchcoats She said that she is not friends with any of these people, just acquainted with
them from school

Kate's momdescribed Kate as open and nonjudgmental and said that Kate talks to a lot
of people Kate was very open and friendly withme.

Kate said that everybody stood up and ran through the cafeteria toward the stairs by the
student store. The janitor kept saying to staydown. Kate stayed down. She thinks that Coach
Sanders was telling people to get in to the auditorium She waswearingher backpack and never
gor to take it off.

Kate said that all the kids were running up the stairsand then, she heard a boom

Kate said that at first, she and Britany went out the doors on the south side of the cafeteria
and sat out there for what seemed like 15 minutes Then. they ran across the senior ''Irking lot
She could hear some shots she thought were coming from the library She turned ar.und to lock,
and Britany grabbed her to run Kate tan and hid behind a little blackcar Then, she heard an
explosion and saw something t1y up in the air She didn't knowwhat it was She stopped at the
fence and ran down a little hill, and ran, headto chest, into a policeman Britany was behind her

Kate saidthat she looks sruffup on the Internet (for school) She doesn't use chat rooms '

She knowsno one with a double pierced eyebrow -

She saw the RNN, but doesn't remember what it was

Kate didn't know TCM members by name

Kate said that her cousin, CourtneyHerivel (303 933-7243), heard someone say,. . . .

Kate said that. Dustin Gortin told Denee Gortin, who told Kate, that_turned
himself in for the shooting.

Reinterview with Katelyn Place on November I. 1999

DETAILS:

On November I. 1999 Katelyn Place and her parents responded to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office at my request
concerning Katelyn being reinterviewed regarding her observations at Columbine High School on April :::0. 1999

I first went over the report taken by investigators on May I~. i 999 with Place [asked Place if the information '.,as
accurate. Place responded by saying yes. Place explained that while In the cafeteria on 1)4,20/99. she was at the
cafeteria window closest to the: southwest COmet. when she observed an individual dressed in a trench coat carrvinc a
gun Place identified that Individual as . . . . Place stated she was now not so sure It w a s " Piac.
~me that she was very excit~9 and had looked into the eves of the person she believed to be
. . . . Place further explained that she had been In a class Wlth~d had seen him several times
, ring a black trench coat. Place stated it was the same !Jpe of trench coat she had seen on the gunman on 04 2099

INVESTIGATION:
On 517199, f met with Braden at his residence reference the Columbine shooting. I first showed Braden a
diagram of the cafeteria and asked him to show me where he had oesn sitting on the day of the shooting,
Braden said the tabie where he was sitting, was not on the diagram and he then drew three Circles on the
diagram east of the stairway. Braden then marked an "x" where he had been seated at the table. I asked
Braden If he could tell me what had happened that day. Braden said he had just got out of a Government
class at approximately 11:10 and walked down the gym hallway to the library hallway. Braden said he
heard someone yell "fight" and looked outside through the windows of the cafeteria, but did not see any
disturbance. Braden said he did sse a male in approximately the middle of the parking lot, standing by a
ca- . 'Jt he could not identify the person. Braden said he then sat back down at the table. Braden said that
Mr. ~anders and the janitor came down the stairs and told everyone to get on the floor underneath the
tables. Braden said he was there for approXimately two minutes and heard someone from the back of the
cafeteria yelling "he's in here.... he's in here". I asked where this yelling came from and he said it was
towards the west end of the cafeteria. Braden said he heard two gunshots that he believed to be In the
cafeteria, but could posslbiy have been outside. Braden said that he stood up with other students and left
the cafeteria through the door by the "Rebel" corner, and then went across the street to Leewood Park to
someone's house, where numerous students were going. Braden said while In the house, he heard
approximately two explosions, but did not see any of them. I asked Braden if he had seen two large duffel
bags In the cafeteria, and he said no, he had not. I asked Braden if he had seen anyone in possession of
or carrying two large duffel bags, and he said no, I asked if he had seen Eric or Dylan on Monday or
Tuesday and he said. no. I asked if he had left any of his possessions in the cafeteria and he said he did
leave a West Park backpack with Its contents in the cafeteria. I asked if he had seen or talkad to any of the
Trench Coat Mafia on MOnday or Tuesday, and he said no. i asked If he had heard anything else aocut the
suspects, bomb making or any type of gun buying, He said the only rumor he had heard was that the
bombs were planted the evening of the "after Prom" party J asked him what he was wearing that day and
he said, "a blue tee shirt with khaki shorts". I asked if he used the Internet at home and he said
approx.rnately 5 or 6 months ago he did and then they discontinued the service. I asked what hrs user
name was and he said he does not remember, that he didn·t really use a name on there. I asked If he knew
anyone with double pierced eyebrows and he said, no he did not. I asked if he remembers hearing any
unusual announcements prior to the shoaling and he said, he does not remember. 1asked if he could give
m!' 'y further Information on the Trench Coat Mafia. Braden said he thought It was only a nickname and
th.... Iere was no such thing as the Trenoh Coat Mafia.

On 6-9-99,Inv. Reker did reinter view Pollack in
regards to possibly seeing the duffle bags in the cafeteria
during 4th hour.
Pollack states that she was in the cafeteria between
the hours of 10:15 and 11:25 on the day of the shooting.
She relates that she never saw any suspicious bags or
persons carrying any duffle bags.
She also states that she did not see any mewhers of the
trench coat mafia while she was in the cafeteria.
She does state that her friend Ashley Eggland states
that she sawllllllllllllltwalking through the parking lot that
morning with ~iebald.
She also states that Eggland also saw
shooting at her (Eggland) .
Pollack was unable to provide any further information
and the interview was terminated.
