Clewer Movies (2010, November 10). Jumping the Broom Movie Trailer Official (HD) [VideoFile]. Retrieved from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D90GKozn-Xg

This movie trailer shows the separation between the light skinned black community and the dark skinned black community. The stereotypes portrayed in the film are stereotypes that of many that I talk about in my presentation. In the trailer, a light skinned black family represents many stereotypes that they are well educated and wealthy while the dark skinned black family comes from a lower income neighborhood where their son came out of poverty. The movie explores these stereotypes along with the question of whether the light skinned woman, showed marry a dark skinned man who comes from a different social class. This helps support my argument of light skinned blacks being portrayed more favorably in the media.

Goldsmith, A. H., Hamilton, D., & Darity Jr., W. (2007). From Dark to Light: Skin Color and Wages among African-Americans. The Journal of Human Resources, 42(4), 701-720.

This article from Hamilton explores the wage gaps within the African American community based on the hue of a black persons skin. Biases in the workplace based on skin color are talked about in this article. I used this article to help support my claim that light skinned blacks have more privilege and power within the work place. With their higher wages, light skinned blacks have more chances to be wealthy than dark skinned blacks, supporting my thesis.

Hall, R. E. (1992). Bias Among African-Americans Regarding Skin Color: Implications for Social Work Practice. SAGE Journals, 2(4), 479-486. I selected this article because it explores my first point in my presentation about blacks experiences bias from other blacks. In the article, it is shown that many blacks are discriminated other blacks based on the hue of their skin. In the beginning of my presentation, I present negative stereotypes about dark skinned blacks that dont come from any other race, but the black race. These stereotypes further separate light skinned blacks from dark skinned blacks.

Keith, V. M. (1991). Skin Tone and Stratification in the Black Community. JSTOR, 97(3), 762770. Keiths article on skin tone supports my claim that dark skinned blacks are at a disadvantage. Keith talks about the start of the disadvantage during slavery where light skinned blacks were able to work in the homes while dark skinned blacks had to always work in the field. The advantage of the light skinned blacks working in the homes was the advantage to observe language. This advantage has carried on today within the black community where more light skinned blacks obtain property, higher paying jobs and education. This helps support my claim that light skinned blacks are at an advantage and have more power than dark skinned blacks.

Starr, T. J. (2011, December 21). Light-Skinned Blacks Preferred Over Darker-Skinned Ones | Breaking News for Black America. Breaking News for Black America | News One. Retrieved November 27, 2012, from http://newsone.com/2000618/light-skin-vs-dark-skin/

IS BASEBALL A GLOBAL SPORT In this article, Starr talks about the differences in treatment of dark skinned blacks and light skinned blacks. A study in the article conducted from 1995-2009 in North Carolina shows that light skinned blacks do 11 percent less time in jail than dark skinned blacks for the same crimes. This helps support my thesis that light skinned blacks have more power compared to dark skinned blacks when it comes to anything in life.
