Provocative Titles for Intellectual Pursuits

Winter 2011
This catalog represents our fourth and final catalog for this, the inaugural year
of the River North Editions catalog. We have been extremely pleased with the
response to this new catalog and look forward to another successful year. In
addition, based on the increase in diverse media reviews secured by the RNE
publishers, it appears that we are expanding the audience for these high-
quality works.

IPG has a meticulous approach to accepting publishers for distribution—many

publishers approach us, but few qualify for distribution—so it is extremely
rewarding to be able to introduce new and innovative publishers to the market-
place. When we do introduce a new publisher for the first time, we also display
their entire backlist under the last section in the catalog, entitled New Publisher
Backlist Titles.

In our commitment to offer fresh, original thinking and diverse opinions,

River North Editions is pleased to present its latest collection of new titles
from our noteworthy publishers. The content found in these titles will promote
intellectual inquiry, yet the subjects and points of view will reach beyond
a strictly academic ideal and satisfy the curiosity of customers who support
quality independent trade and university bookstores.

Enjoy,

Engaging and enigmatic, this anthology relates powerful
narratives of passionate love as well as compelling defeat.

The companion volume to the 50th-anniversary edition of Black

Like Me, this book features John Howard Griffin’s later writings
on racism and spirituality. Conveying a progressive evolution in
thinking, it further explores Griffin’s ethical stand in the human
rights struggle and nonviolent pursuit of equality—a view he
shared with greats such as Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and
Thomas Merton. Enlightening and forthright, this record also
focuses on Griffin’s spiritual grounding in the Catholic monastic
tradition, discussing the illuminating meditations on suffering and
the author’s own reflections on communication, justice, and dying.
John Howard Griffin was a musicologist who served, and was
injured, in the Air Force during World War II. Blind for a decade,
Griffin became an acclaimed novelist and essayist and when his

South, he was personally vilified, hanged in effigy in his home-

worked with major Civil Rights leaders throughout the era,
taught at the University of Peace, and delivered more than a

A Concise History of the Qing Dynasty series

Dai Yi
The Qing Dynasty was a feudal institution established by the upper dominant class of the Manchu ethnic minority—and the last
of the feudal autocratic monarchy dynasties in China’s long history. This book provides an account of the history of the
Manchurian rise, their peak and decline, and their eventual demise, but, above all, it is an account of the significant history of the
development, creation, and struggle for a modern China. Spread across four volumes, this record begins with the ancestry and rise
of Manchu and ends at the Opium War in 1840, after which China entered the modern historical period and great revolutionary
changes took place in society that were fundamentally different from those of the early and mid-Qing Dynasty.
Dai Yi has served as director of the history department and as director of the Research Institute of Chinese History at Renmin
University of China. He is the author or editor of more than 30 books, including China and the World in the 18th Century and A
Yearbook of the Qing Dynasty.
