Recognition of Mineral Symmetry

External Crystal Form (Morphology)
- macroscopic observations/measurements of crystal faces - 32 crystal classes (point groups) possible symmetry elements or combinations of elements

Internal Atomic Arrangement

- determined from X-ray diffraction - takes into account 3D translation - 14 lattice types (Bravais lattices) - Combination of 32 point groups and 14 lattice types yields 230 space groups

Symmetry plane (Bidang simetri)

Dibedakan : Berdasarkan kedudukannya menjadi 3 macam : a. Vertikal b. Diagonal c. Horizontal Berdasarkan jenisnya ada 2 macam : a. Bidang simetri utama b. Bidang simetri biasa/tambahan

Mineralogy@Rosana 2013

Symmetry plane (Bidang simetri)

Dibedakan lagi menjadi dua berdasarkan atas macam operasinya : a. Gyre b.

Rotational Axes

Pusat Simetri / titik simetri

Mineralogy@Rosana 2013 35

Inversi = Pusat Simetri (C)

Operasi pusat simetri disebut juga operasi inversi (i).

Combinations of symmetry elements are also possible To create a complete analysis of symmetry about a point in space, we must try all possible combinations of these symmetry elements In the interest of clarity and ease of illustration, we continue to consider only 2-D examples
