PNOY SPENDS LABOR DAY AWAY FROM PROTEST RALLIES

SUFFERING from cold and cough, President Benigno Aquino spent Labor Day in his hometown in Tarlac, away from protest rallies THIS WAS SCHEDULED WEEKS AGO. THE RECOMMENDATION FOR ACTIVITIES CAME FROM DOLE (DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT). HINDI NAMAN UMIIWAS, LACIERDA S AID. in Manila. Aquino traveled to Tarlac City on Tuesday afternoon, right after his dialogue with representatives from the labor sector in the Palace, to visit a job fair. Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the President spent the morning of Labor Day to get some rest and recuperate from a bout of cold and coughing. This is an opportunity for him namagpahinga. Alamnyonaman he got colds and cough sakampanya pa lang. He is taking medications for that, Lacierda told Palace reporters yesterday in a phone patch interview. But Lacierda quickly clarified that the President was not trying to evade Labor Day protests in Manila. The Palace spokesman added that Aquino was expected to hold a meeting with local leaders in Victoria town later yesterday. Last year, Aquino held his dialogue with labor groups on Labor Day itself. He also inspected a government-sponsored job fair in Pasay City. In last years Labor Day protests, Lacierda along with Budget chief Florencio Abad and presidential political adviser Ronald Llamas faced militant workers who protested on Mendiola Bridge near the Palace to assure them of the governments action on their concerns. Rallies were held yesterday at the Chino Roces Bridge, LiwasangBonifacio, Mabuhay Rotonda, Bonifacio Monument, Plaza Salamanca in Ermita, Manila; and at the Ninoy Aquino monument in Makati City. The Philippine National Police said the demonstrations were peaceful and there were no violent clashes between the protesters and the authorities. The PNP leadership is thankful to the organizers of the mass actions for their cooperation to the security measures we implemented that resulted in the generally peaceful outcome of theLabor Day activities,

said PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent

SMB puts win run on the line versus Warriors

Getting better, stronger with every game, San Miguel Beer puts its 12-game winning streak on the line as it goes up against the Indonesia Warriors in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) tomorrow at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City. The Chris Banchero-less Beermen dug deep into their roster as they won the last two games, the last one via a close 71-69 verdict over the Saigon Heat last weekend to keep the leadership at 15-3. A 13th straight victory by the Beermen at 5 p.m. will put them a win shy of gaining the No. 1 spot and the homecourt advantage in the semis. In case of a tie for San Miguel and Indonesia after the eliminations, the Indons can take the top spot should they win by at least 15 points this afternoon. After the Indonesia game, the Beermen play Sports Rev Thailand May 8 and May 11 at Ynares Pasig and Westport Malaysia on May 17 in Kuala Lumpur, closing out their elimination round sked. Despite the re-activation of Stanley Pringle (19 points), the Warriors (13-5) came up short against the Westport Malaysia Dragons, 86-85. Austria. We have learned our lessons from the Saigon game. We took them for granted and let our guard down. We almost paid for it,Austria added. Without Banchero, Austria relies anew on his pointguard rotation that includes Paolo Hubalde and Jeric Fortuna. Their frontline remains solid with Brian Williams, AsiTaulava and Justin Williams. Scoring support will come from Leo Avenido, Val Acuna, JR Cawaling and RJ Rizada.

After the Beermen, the Warriors remaining schedule includes Saigon Heat (May 8) and Singapore(May 11) in Indonesia and the Slingers again on May 14 in Singapore. Indonesia is a dangerous team with Pringle around so we have to be disciplined in executing our game plan both on offense and defense. But the first thing in our list is to stop Pringle, said San Miguel Beer head coach Leo
