Painting an unforgettable portrait of the grand and

petty motivations of the human heart, this poignant
novel tells the story of Father Samuel Whiting, who
simply exists, asleep in his own life, adrift in a loneli-
ness of his own creation. When a circus comes to
town and his self-imposed isolation is shattered, he
gradually awakens to a world of possibility, embark-
ing on a journey of discovery through the
uncharted terrain of his own heart. Whiting’s tale is
one of insecurity and false hopes, of self-absorption
and self-denial, and of reaching out and falling
short. Finally blinded by self-delusion and at the
brink of despair, a challenge to serve will change
everything he believes about the true cost of love.

Set during the brink of the Civil War, this beautifully
written novel traces James Turner, a charming,
impulsive writer and lecturer; Charlotte, his down-
to-earth bride; and Cabot, an idealistic Harvard-
educated abolitionist as they are drawn together
in a social experiment deep in the Missouri Ozarks.
Inspired by utopian dreams of building a new
society, Turner is given a tract of land to found
the community of Daybreak: but not everyone
involved in the project is a willing partner, and
being the leader of a remote farming community
isn’t the life Turner envisioned. Charlotte, con-
fronted with the hardships of rural life, must mature
quickly to deal with the challenges of building the
community while facing her husband’s betrayals
and her growing attraction to Cabot. In turn,
Cabot struggles to reconcile his need to leave
Daybreak and join the fight against slavery with
his desire to stay near the woman he loves. As the
war draws ever closer, the utopians try to remain
neutral and friendly to all but soon find neutrality
is not an option. Ultimately, each member of
Daybreak must take a stand—both in their
political and personal lives.

Colorful and fun-filled, this picture book introduces
Randy Kazandy, a young boy with poor eyesight
who absolutely hates his glasses and thinks they
make him look like an alien from outer space. He
does everything he can to avoid wearing his specta-
cles—even getting rid of them in ingenious and
devious ways—but his mother always has another
pair waiting. The pitch-perfect lyricism of the prose
flows effortlessly throughout the book, with lush
illustrations providing the ideal companionship
for a quality reading and learning experience for
all children.

“ I admire [Rhonda Fischer’s] commitment to writing

children’s story is about a wise boy who helps a girl Maybe
who isn’t very nice to him. Although his friend becomes
upset about the situation, the wise boy simply lets it 9780983824305
go and continues playing. The story captures Zen
concepts, such as being in the present moment, doing
something nice without expecting anything in return,
letting go of unpleasant experiences, and not lingering
on negative thoughts. The book’s beautiful illustrations
juxtapose modern graphics with traditional back-
grounds to transpose the old into the new, thus
creating an accessible context for deeply
meaningful concepts.

Introducing a red horse named Quincy, this chil-
dren’s story focuses on the importance of friendship
as one makes their way in a changing world.
Quincy’s life is turned upside down when he gets
a new owner and is taken to a new home where
there are horse shows every Sunday. When Quincy
befriends an old horse named Beau, he finally con-
fides that he does not know how to jump and win
ribbons and together they find an unexpected
answer to the problem. The book is an engaging,
comforting story with vibrant illustrations that re-
flects a knowledge and love of horses with an
attention to detail of horse life that imbue the
story with authenticity. The first in a new series, it
is perfect for children who love animals and want
to learn more about them.

“Black’s warm-hued paintings, combining realistic

detail with striking simplicity, are definitely worth
a look.” —Kirkus Discoveries

The second book of the Quincy the Horse series, this
sequel follows Quincy and his friend Beau as they
leave the comforts of home and go on a trip across
the United States in a huge horse van. Along his
journey of self-discovery and expanding horizons
across the country, Quincy sees all the jobs horses
can do and dreams about his own possibilities. Full
of energy and imagination, this beautifully illustrated
book also includes a map of the United States with
nine highlighted states that are part of the story.

“Matthews’s narrative moves ahead at a steady

clip, and Beau imparts a good amount of informa-
tion about different horses and their jobs to Quincy
and, by extension, readers. Black’s polished paint-
ings are a highlight, and many scenes have a pho-

The book is different in that it is written
entirely by a child diagnosed with ASD
explaining what it's like from his perspective
living everyday with the disorder.

In this real-life story told from the point of view of a

child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Jackie
Christiansen describes the unique differences that
make him who he is while also explaining how he is
still similar to the other kids his age. Jackie discusses
the challenges he faces living with the disorder,
how he struggles with social cues and sensory and
personal-space issues and can occasionally be-
come very loud or animated for no apparent
reason. However, Jackie chooses to celebrate the
aspects that make him unique, and this journal is a
great kid-friendly prompt for starting conversations
about ASD and helping others relate to children
with the disorder.

Jackie Christiansen is a nine-year-old boy with

autism spectrum disorder who enjoys fishing, chess,
and collecting toy cars. He expresses his differences
Jackie’s Journal through his writing so that other children his age
can learn about ASD. Diane Mayer Christiansen is a

What is it?
Small Press United (SPU) is a major distribution option, for new and small publishers, from IPG, the
independent press distributor renowned for bringing titles to an industry-wide level through the
widest variety of sales channels. SPU shares IPG’s sales force throughout the U.S. and Canada
to reach thousands of accounts, including chain and independent bookstores, online retailers,
national wholesalers, library and specialty wholesalers, gift and specialty retail, museums, and
more. SPU does this quicker than other distributors by bypassing the traditional long lead times
needed to get books into the market.

What do I get?
SPU provides publishers with:
• 36 trade sales reps throughout the U.S. and • A list of essential media contacts for
Canada pitching and hand-selling titles soliciting reviews
directly to book buyers • State-of-the-art reporting tools, accessible
• 120 gift sales reps for applicable titles to 24 hours a day, to supervise sales and
reach specialty retail in all regional markets inventory activity
• Nationally recognized metadata trans- • E-book distribution to all major digital vendors
mission services that command availability • Optional print-on-demand services that can
and accuracy in customer databases reduce a publisher’s overall cost and risk
throughout the industry in 4 to 6 weeks
• Membership to the Independent Book
• A suite of online publisher education tools, Publishers Association (IBPA), the leading
including how-to guides for planning an organization for publisher education,
effective publicity campaign, honing affordable marketing programs,
successful pitching techniques, writing press and networking
materials, and setting up author tours

How much does it cost?

SPU was created specifically to accommodate the needs of small publishers who want to
invest in the creation and promotion of their titles rather than struggle with the considerable
challenges of selling and distributing themselves. Publishers pay a one-time $200 set-up fee
upon signing the distribution agreement and 30% of the net sales thereafter. There are no
hidden storage costs or extraneous monthly charges.

How do I get started?

Applying to SPU is easy. The online application can be com-
pleted in a matter of minutes, and you can expect to hear
back regarding your submission within 5–7 business days.
