EmmaSalino January27,2013 Period3APLiterature TheAmericanDreamstartedaroundthe1930s,intheeraoftheGreatDepression.Many peoplewantedjobsjusttosurvive;holdingajobintheGreatDepressionwasamiracleandmuch admiredfor.Whileworldwide,manypeoplewereinaweofthenationalismanddriveAmericanshadin overcomingthispanic.EventuallyU.S.camethroughandbecametheworldwidesuperpower.Its governmentismuchadmiredfor.RhondaWrightcomplainsthatitisnotthegovernments responsibilitytoprovidejobs,andAmericanswanttojumpstraighttothetopinsteadofsettlingfor whattheyhaveatthattime.WhileIdisagreewithWrightsinterpretationofgovernmentparticipation ineconomy,IcompletelyagreethatAmericanshavelosttheprideindoingasimplejobwell. Intodaysdayandera,manygovernmentsmakedecisionswiththenationseconomyinmind. Evenbackthengovernmentswerebasedoneconomy.Economydeterminesthewelfareofthepeople. Thus,whenpoliticianssaywemustcreatejobs,itisforthebenefitofthepeople,despitethefactthat mayjustaswellbeblatherskite.ItisspecificallywrittenintheConstitutionthattheU.S.

Howelsecouldoneachievelife,liberty,andhappinessinthisworld?Therefore,politiciansmustsaythat inordertoappealtothecommonmaninallofus.DuringtheColdWar,theU.S.abhorredtheideaof equallandandnoprivateproperty.Theywantedtocontainit,feelingthreatenedandfearfuloflosing whattheythoughtwereandarevaluablerights.Wrightforgetsthatthereisalargeincomegapin America,andthatAmericaisanadvancednation,unlikesomepartsofIndiaandAsia.Thecostofa dollarisworthmoreinAsiaandIndiathanintheU.S. Theworldismuchmoregreedythanitwasbackthen.Resourcesaredepleting,globalwarming isontherise,andanimalsaregoingextinct.Yet,manyAmericansstillwantthatCEOposition,thatextra raisefordoingsomethingtheyvealwaysdoneintheirjobregularly.TheAmericanDreamisawhole differentdreamthanduringtheGreatDepressionandthepublicationofOfMiceandMen.Theresa recession,andwhereamajorityoftheworldshouldrolluptheirsleevesandhelpspecificallytheupper classtheyareindenial.Adsthatpromoterichesandhealthinlessthansixtysecondsarepoppingup everywhere.Wrightasked,whateverhappenedtotheprideAmericansusedtohaveindoingasimple jobwellevenafactoryjob?.Itsdead,alongwithothermemoriesofabadeconomicdrop,withthe motivationofhardwork,withGeorgeandLennieandtherabbits.Nowadays,Americanshavetoomuch prideforsettlingforajobthatisevenaninklinglessbetterthantheiroriginaljobs.Theyforgetwhat itsliketohavetheirowndream,insteadsettlingforadreamofsuccessandmoneythathaslongbeen warped.TodaysAmericanDreamisallaboutgettingtothetopofthestairswithouttakingthestairs. Inconclusion,whileWrightwasonpointinwonderingwheretheoldworkingspiritof Americanswent,shedidfalterintheparticipatingroleofthegovernmentineconomy.Theold Americandreamisnomore;itsbeenreplacedbyanewdream.However,itsstillgovernment responsibilitytocreatemorejobsinordertokeepthewholenationgoing.Confuciusoncesaid,The strengthofanationisderivedfromtheintegrityofitshomes.
