Rapid Rehousing is Off to a Great Start

Housing for New Hope is helping families in transition to secure permanent housing through Rapid Rehousing. We are committed to move 80 households 45 families and 35 individuals from homelessness into their own homes in 2013. You can help make a difference in the lives of families moving from homelessness into their new home! Your company, congregation, or organization can sponsor a family, hold a donation drive for furniture or household supplies, or help families move.

Volunteers from BlueCross BlueShield of NC celebrate after completing a Rapid Rehousing move in April.

Hope in Action Spring 2013

Recent Events Health Summit
Housing for New Hope participated in the 12th annual Durham Health Summit, held on March 22, 2013. The meeting is held each year to discuss issues surrounding the health of Durham residents. Housing for New Hope presented on homelessness and healthcare, and Executive Director Terry Allebaugh spoke about the homeless healthcare crisis. Due to multiple barriers, many homeless people are unable to navigate the healthcare system and the result is a life expectancy 10 years less than the general population. Thanks to a capacity-building grant from BlueCross BlueShield of NC, Housing for New Hope is working to establish models to help navigate healthcare needs of the homeless and work towards building solutions so no one is released into homelessness from a hospital. Sign up a Team for Creative Food Drive

Last fall, Housing for New Hope was a beneficiary of the Durham event Creative Food Drive, hosted by MHAworks, where teams competed to build sculptures out of nonperishable food items. The event was a huge success, raising over 12,000 pounds of food for Housing for New Hope and the Food Bank, and is planned to be even bigger in 2013! The 3rd Annual Creative Food Drive will be held on Saturday, October 19 at the American Tobacco Campus. Now is the time to consider signing up as a team! This is a fun, free, and family-friendly community event. Its a great teambuilder and way to give back for workplaces, congregations, civic organizations, or any other group. For more information or to sign up a team, visit www.creativefooddrive.com.

Point in Time Count Results

The annual Point in Time Count survey of homelessness in Durham was held January 30. Housing for New Hope staff joined with volunteers and other agencies to survey the city of Durham for the number of unsheltered individuals. The count indicated a rise in the total number of people experiencing homelessness at 759, up from 698 in 2012. However, the number of people without any shelter dropped from 63 to 53 and the number of chronically homeless was the lowest since 2005 at 87 individuals. This compares to 134 chronically homeless counted in 2012. HOW YOU CAN HELP
