Synop si s
In the bleak landscape of a farm in Kansas, a lovely girl called Dorothy
lives with her Uncle Henry and Auntie Emma.
One day, a tornado sweeps the girl away, along with her house, to a
faraway place. The house falls onto the Wicked Witch of the East. As
Dorothy is eager to return home, Glinda the Good Witch tells her that only
the wise Wizard of Oz is able to get her back to her farm. On her way to
meet the Wizard she meets a brainless scarecrow, a tin-man who hasnt
got a heart and a cowardly lion. Together, with their different needs, they
set off along the yellow brick road to see the Wizard of Oz in Emerald City

But ... How will the story continue? Will the Wizard satisfy their needs?
Will all their wishes come true?

Moral

the power to make it true.

Activities
For teachers:
This workpack is divided into different levels, taking into account learners
age and language level.
As you may notice, the same play may cater for an ample age range. This
is due to an important innovation meant to suit different students needs and
interests. This means that while different age groups may be viewing the same
play the various pre and post language activities in the workpack attend to
a different level.
Teachers are thus able to provide students with details about the story
and the characters before they go to the theatre, and also with follow-up
activities after the play.
Wizard of Oz is suitable for students whose level of English is equivalent to
A1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

WORKING WITH MORAL VALUES


Make your students discuss the moral of the play.
You may use similar moral lessons.

TRY DRAMA IN YOUR CLASSROOM


Make your pupils dramatize the scene they liked best in the play and flesh
out characters.
A classroom theatre: As a classroom project, the pupils can prepare a play,
The Wizard of Oz, to be performed at the end of school year, or as a show-case.
This would involve planning and working for long periods of time. First, the pupils
should work together on a script based on the story. Then, each learner can be
given different roles, such as actors, actresses, or being in charge of the scenery,
music, lights or even help with the costumes.

PROYECT WORK
PROJECT WORK can be assigned based on several themes:

Farms, Animals, Magic, Dreams

ANIMALS
The lion in the story is cowardly, which
challenges the notion of the lion as a brave animal.
Cats have nine lives, dogs are faithful, elephants have good memory, etc. Kids
can make
up a story based on, for example, a forgetful
elephant.

BODY LANGUAGE
Ask kids to think how the Tin Man, the
Lion and the Scarecrow walk and move. Let them practise
their walks. This will provide an
opportunity to learn new vocabulary and
to enhance motivation and interest.
THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD
Use a large piece of yellow paper and cut out bricks on it. Distribute the
bricks among your students. Ask each child to write his or her name in one of
the bricks or draw a picture of a favorite character from the story. Hang the
different parts on the wall in a yellow brick road pattern.
