In that project, the client needed a desalination plant to produce potable water and demineralised process water in order to increase its nickel production and reduce its water and energy losses. Degrmont Industry, via Ondeo IS, took advantage of its reactivity and proposed an offer for the detailed design, supply and commissioning of the sea water desalination plant of the Koniambo complex. This project was followed by the signature of a services contract and mobile solutions order by Koniambo Nickel SAS.

Koniambo Nickel SAS is a world-class industrial complex and is one of the world's largest and highest grade nickel producers. To ensure the continuous growth of the mining activity, the client needed a seawater desalination plant to produce 129 m3/h of potable water and 53 m3/h of demineralised process water for the boiler and the cooling systems. Degrmont Industry, via Ondeo IS, made every effort to make this project come true, in a very complex and challenging location: the Koniambo Massif is located near the North Province capital of Kon in New Caledonia.

Degrmont Industry, via Ondeo IS, realised the detailed design, supply and commissioning of the seawater desalination plant at the Koniambo complex ,where the seawater is treated by filtration, reverse osmosis and electrodeonization (EDI). The plant is fully automatic and consists of 30 skids, fully assembled, cabled, tested and equipped with I/O remote and power cabinets as well as all prefabricated piping material and I&E cables supply. The latest technologies of Pressure Exchangers (ERI) and electrodeionization are implemented in self standing skids in full compliance with O&G standards. The units are equipped with an energy recovery system for an increased optimization of the facility.

Following the commissioning of the desalination units, a services contract was signed and mobile units ordered to guarantee the overproduction requested during the commissioning of the Production Plant and Power Station .
