John’s Whistle
Lili Ferreirós
Illustrations by Sonja Wimmer
• Co-op available
• Also available in Spanish as El silbido
de Juan (9788415784081)
John is different. When other children
began learning how to speak, John
didn’t. As he grew older, whenever he
had to ask for something or wanted to
express his feelings, he would simply
whistle. John began using different kinds
of whistles for different kinds of reasons:
he blew a gentle whistle to call attention,
a louder whistle when he was hungry,
and an even louder one if something
scared him. But everything changed the
day he met Clara, a little girl with dark,
dark eyes. This is a tender story that
reminds readers that music is the true
language of the soul, and that people’s
differences can be resolved through good
intentions and friendship.
Lili Ferreirós is the award-winning
author and publisher of more than 20
books, including children’s books.
Sonja Wimmer is an award-winning
illustrator whose work has been fea-
tured in books, posters, and magazines.
Her illustrations for The Word
Collector earned her Best Illustrator at the 2011 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards.

I Want to Be
Philberta
Mar Pavón
Illustrations by Alex Pelayo
• Co-op available
• Also available in Spanish as Ser Filiberta
(9789788415619)
All of the adults in Mary’s life seem to
be obsessed with wishing. Mary’s dad
wants to be rich, and her mom wants to
live in a bigger and better house. The
principal of Mary’s school wants to
retire, and her teacher wants to be the
new principal. They spend so much of
their time wishing for things that they
believe will leave them feeling complete-
ly satisfied and happy, but they are per-
plexed every time Mary expresses the
one wish she has: to be Philberta.
Maybe the mysterious storybook that
Mary’s always carrying around can help
put an end to all of their useless wishing
and remind them that there’s nothing
more gratifying than letting themselves
get carried away by a good book.
Mar Pavón is an award-winning author of children’s poetry whose works include the Clucky series and Could It Happen to Anyone?
Her books have been translated into Portuguese, French, and English. Alex Pelayo is an award-winning illustrator and designer.

• 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of Valentina Tereshkova’s trip as the
first woman into outer space and the 30th anniversary of Sally Ride’s
trip as the first American woman into outer space
Twenty-three women from 10 different countries whose careers span
a half century of human spaceflight are profiled in this educational
book for young readers. Women in Space features such figures as Sally
Ride, the first American woman to orbit the earth; Peggy Whitson,
who logged more than a year in orbit while aboard the International
Space Station; Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in
space; and astronauts from Japan, Canada, Italy, South Korea, and
France. Additional attention is paid to the women of Mercury 13, a
program that trained women in the same screening tests administered
to the men who became the first astronauts at NASA. Space pioneer
Valentina Tereshkova, who in 1963 became the first woman to rocket
into space, is also profiled. These stories of the pilots, physicists, and
doctors who broke the stratospheric ceiling demonstrate the vital role
women have played in the history of space exploration.

I get on the elevator in a daze, not realizing it’s going down instead of up. The doors
open on the ground floor to what sounds like live music. Just before the doors
close, I slip through and follow the sound around into the atrium. There he is.
He’s resting against the edge of a large fountain in the center of the atrium. Head
down, strumming his guitar. Two other guys are playing with him, one on bass and
another on keyboards. Dylan’s wearing faded jeans and a blue plaid shirt. He taps
his right foot in time to the beat. When he sings I recognize the lyrics to “The
Problem with Me”—a song from Dylan’s band days. Rules for Breaking the Rules
won Battle of the Bands three years running—I was there every time. Reflexively I
retrieve my camera from my bag. He doesn’t notice me shooting as he plays,
engrossed in the music.
Dylan catches sight of me. He smiles, slings his guitar over his back and approach-
es. My heart races.
“Philadelphia Greene,” he says, and I smile. “You’re going to have to pay for those
photos.”
The best I can muster is a nervous laugh.
“Are you on a break? Want to grab a bite?” he asks.
I have never wanted to do anything more in my life.

Excerpt:
Every day after school, I worked from 4:00 till 8:00 p.m at the Gas-N-Go, then waited for Mother
Dearest to come get me because apparently it was too dangerous to walk two blocks to the bus station at
night. A seventeen-year-old who could not be trusted to get her own license because she was unreliable
and dishonest was how my counselors put it. This bad behavior, they said, stemmed from my need to
rebel, my insecurities, low self-esteem, poor life choices, blah-blah-blah. These assumptions always led to
the inevitable “Tell me about your childhood” bit.
So I fed them gravy, I fed them wine, but never everything. I found it was too hard for them to digest. Or,
rather, I was afraid that after searching through my life story of unextraordinary events, they would diag-
nose me as a nutso without a cause and put me in a padded room, no furnishings or windows included.
I was born, I grew up, and I came to this city, Cesspit 2, and started seeing a creepy counselor once a
week because it got me out of class. That's all I said, period.
Sure, I had a few grains of stardust sitting in the dump that was my life, but besides those crumbs, my
existence was the same as everyone else’s—lots of trash and very little treasure.
I'm in my butt-tranquilizing chair at Gas-N-Go, writing the lyrics to the song playing in my headphones.
When the bell tolls, the room betrays me. I'm re-retying my shoes when a dime rolls across the counter
and chimes against the floor. I sit up, dime in one hand and iPod in the other.
“Um, sorry.” It’s the guy again. He’s wearing a timid smile and holding out a one and some odd change.
“Here's the rest of it.”
His voice is deep, like an idling diesel engine but quieter. Softer. I didn't notice it when we first met, prob-
ably because I was preoccupied with the alarm button under the counter. The hunch of his shoulders is
shy this time, and the longer I stare at him the lower they get, curling in like burning paper.

The passage was pitch black and utterly dead. Jack conjured an orb of
light to float in front of them. It illuminated carvings and patterns on
the walls and ceiling, similar to those outside but unfaded. There were
serpents, jackals, eagles—or at least creatures like them—winged
humanoids, weighing scales, stylized rivers. The air was stale, and little
sound had made its way inside. It was as if this tunnel had been sealed
off completely from the outside world.
Farther down, it opened out into a chamber only slightly larger than an
average bedroom. In fact, Jack did a double take. What he had initially
thought to be a king-sized bed was actually a large block of stone.
Covered in more carvings, the top was embossed with a life-sized

Jack had to admit it reminded him of an ancient Egyptian exhibition
he had once seen at a local museum.
“Does that mean the Shard’s inside?” Dannie’s eyes were glinting in
the orb’s glow. Apparently she relished the possibility of disinterring a
corpse.
“I don’t think so,” Ruth replied slowly. “Whoever was here before us
wouldn’t have gone to the trouble of covering their tracks but still
leave the entrance open . . .”

Excerpt:
His master turned away from the glowing sphere of light and stared, unblinking, at Clyde’s face. The
old man appeared rife with sorrow, the corners of his mouth turned down, deep apology in his kindly
blue eyes.
“To your chambers,” his master said. Clyde could not hear him but was relatively apt at reading lips.
The old man repeated the demand, his mouth opening wider in a shout Clyde still could not hear.
“Get to your chambers, my boy. You’re too important for them to find you now. Run. Stay hidden
until it’s all over.”
“How long?” Clyde liked specificity to his tasks. He turned and saw through the chateau’s back win-
dows to the kitchen and dining room. Inside, men Clyde didn’t recognize were moving about. He
looked at his master, whose gaze was transfixed on the sphere of shifting light where the table and tea
set had been just seconds before.
His master was muttering, repeating his demand to Clyde, unable to break his mesmerized stare.
“Three weeks, my boy. Stay hidden for at least three weeks. Go now.” He gasped, “Run.”
Clyde knew never to disregard his master’s orders. He got to his feet, his body aching as if a miscalcu-
lated step might shatter him. He took the path along the back of the chateau, avoiding the men he did-
n’t recognize. When he got to the far corner of the house, before rounding it to reach the entrance to
his cellar chambers, he stopped.
Keeping hidden, he took one last look at his master, who lay in the grass, bleeding from the cut across
his brow, as four shadows fell over him. The ball of light evaporated in a puff, and his master’s mind
gave the impression of sudden clearing. But then it shifted into horror. He faced his unseen spectators
bravely. The three black shadows of tall, narrow figures loomed in the grass around his resolute mas-
ter—a devilish paw of outstretched fingers folding around him.

Just how humdrum is 10-year-old Aldo Zelnick’s life right now? So
humdrum that he sets out to measure which January day will be the

this book will captivate enthusiastic and reluctant readers alike.

Miss Sara names a lot of the kids in our village. She has a special genius, because the name she

she has named discover they can do amazing things.
I’m almost thirteen. Just a few more months. I don’t have my gift yet. I’m trying to figure out
what it will be. I want to be able to fly, like Superman. Up, up, and away. That’s why I’m standing
in this tree. I’m working on my gift. I don’t have the flying down yet, but I’m getting closer. You
see, I’m only wearing swim trunks and a tee shirt. No shoes. I don’t want any extra weight.
I scramble up higher. I spread my arms like wings and take off, pushing away the branches. I’m
sailing. Then I’m falling. I need lift. But instead, I crash out of the large sycamore with a thunder-
ous rush of leaves and shattered branches and hit the grass, belly first. Oomph. Then my forehead
hits the ground.
“Ouch!” I yelp. I hold my head in my hands. Colored dots are racing the Grand Prix in front of
my eyes. I shake my head. Another bump on my forehead.
“Jordan! That’s the fourth tree you’ve fallen out of today. You’re always falling out of trees.”
That’s Ziv, my brother. He’s two years younger than me. He doesn’t know anything.
“I’m just practicing,” I tell him for the one hundredth time. “When I find my gift, I know I’m
going to be a superhero. I’m gonna be able to fly.”

Not So Fast
Parenting Your Teen Through the Dangers of Driving
Tim Hollister
Foreword by Sandy Spavone
• Co-op available
• Author tour to include Hartford, Connecticut (September)
Providing advice to parents, guardians, and other adults who supervise
teen drivers about the critical decisions that must be made before
getting behind the wheel of a car, this book will help empower and
guide parents of the more than three million teens obtaining new
driver’s licenses annually in the United States. Author and parent Tim
Hollister proves that supervision before driving is every bit as important
to lowering crash rates as teaching teens how to turn at a busy intersec-
tion. Parents will learn priceless information in teaching teenagers how
to evaluate the circumstances of every driving trip, how to be able to
say “no” when necessary, how to prepare a “flight plan” for each drive,
and how to put safety before convenience. Parents will also benefit by
understanding the real dangers and risks in teen driving by recognizing
the limits of driver training programs and will thus become more
informed and proactive in their supervisory role. Proceeds from sales
will support a memorial fund—set up in honor of Hollister’s son, Reid,
who was killed in an automobile accident in 2006—which subsidizes
infant and toddler education in greater Hartford, Connecticut, and
other worthy traffic safety causes.
Tim Hollister became a national authority and spokesperson for safer
teen driving after losing his 17-year-old son Reid in a car crash in 2006.
He served on a Connecticut state task force that overhauled his state’s
teen driving laws; is the creator of From Reid’s Dad, a national blog for
parents of teen drivers; and regularly makes appearances on regional
television and radio. He was awarded the 2012 AAA Southern New
