Many of todays demanding applications require the flattening or shaping of extremely hard materials. This high-speed four-stand mill line, with 6 diameter carbide shell rolls, automatic mill set-up, SPC data gathering software and more, produces precision natural and square edged rectangles from Inconel 600 and stainless steel round wire.
The traversing reel shown at left is a Model 3518 Hydraulic Cylinder Traversing Take-up Reel with servo control. The servo output is determined by a comparison of the combined reference signals from both linear and rotary transducers, which are constantly monitored and continuously fed to a microcomputer. The Model 3518 has coil SPECIFICATIONS weight capacity of 3,000 lbs., 500 lbs. tension and a traversing stroke of 18. TURKS HEAD
TURKS HEAD INTRODUCTION
ADVANTAGES OF A TURKS HEAD
To those unfamiliar with Turks Head operation the question naturally arises Why use a Turks Head in place of other drawing methods? The following are important advantages that the Turks Head offers: Permits forming directly from round to square, rectangles and special shapes Takes bigger reductions per pass Greater flexibility because rolls are infinitely adjustable lower maintenance costs rolls can be reground Maintains uniform tolerances The Turks Head rolling principle produces less inherent friction In both the ferrous and nonferrous metal forming industries, Turks Heads are used as single units and in tandem on common stands for wire and rod shaping. They also used in tandem with Rolling Mills, Bull Blocks and Drawbenches.
The name Turks Head was in all probability applied to this particular metalworking machine because of a fancied resemblance between the decorative four-strand Turks Head knot and the four rolls of the machine.

The Turks Head is a metal forming machine. It may be compared to an adjustable draw die but is actually infinitely adjustable within its limiting dimensions. The Turks Head operates on the Rolling Mill principle and imparts the same qualities to the metal as the Rolling Mill does, namely, superior surface finish, accurate size and shape, and improved grain structure of the metal. The Turks Head differs from a Rolling Mill in the number and arrangement of rolls. The Turks Head utilizes two pair of rolls, one pair is arranged vertically and the other pair horizontally. In all types of Turks Heads the rolls are infinitely adjustable. Each basic type of Fenn Turks Head is designed to meet a particular requirement of precision wire or rod shaping. With the exception of power-driven models, all types require a pull-through power source such as a Drawbench, a Bull Block, a double capstan, a shedding drum or a Rolling Mill. To obtain high production speeds and hold tolerances within acceptable limits, certain basic operating rules must be followed. Proper application of Turks Head equipment cannot be overemphasized. It must be understood the Turks Head is not intended to be substitute for a Rolling Mill. However, certain fundamental rules are applicable to both machines where size control, surface finish, accessories or combination use is concerned.
SIZE CONTROL
Built with extreme accuracy by highly skilled craftsman, Fenn Turks Heads will form sections to close tolerances when properly used. The unique design and construction of interlocking slides permit infinite adjustment. Within the physical size of each Turks Head, SPX Precision Compnents has engineered the highest possible bearing capacity using precision heavy-duty bearings.

SURFACE FINISH
Although surface irregularities cause no particular difficulty, a higher quality entry stock will result in a better finished product. Bad surface defects cannot be eliminated completely, and failure to remove oxides and scale will cause the rolls to wear more rapidly. It is further recommended that lime coatings be removed from wire prior to forming, since it tends to build up on the rolls causing roll separation and consequent tolerance changes as well as bearing overload.

IMPORTANT Specifications for High Speed Turks Heads are shown in red on the above charts and model numbers are designated with the suffix HS.

Level wind coilers were developed by SPX Precision Components engineers for producers of copper and aluminum tubing who require the finished tubing to be traverse, or level, wound. Coils are wound onto a drum, which is driven by a hydraulic traversing reel. A turnstile incorporating a double drum arrangement is provided to enable one coil to be wound while the other is being removed making the operation as efficient as possible. SPX Precision Components can tailor any design to meet our customers exact requirements and production demands.
Spoolers
SPX Precision Components can provide a full range of wire processing equipment including Coiling and Spooling Equipment, Rod and Wire Payoff Systems, Rewind Equipment and Wire, Rod and Coil Handling Systems. We welcome the opportunity to serve you and contribute to your metal forming success.

SWAGING MACHINES
The low-cost way to point, reduce and form rod, tube or wire
Swaging is a special type of forging in which metal is formed by a rapid succession of hammer blows. It is easily the most economical method ever employed to point tubing, rod, and wire for redraw and to size, reduce, shape, taper, bond or form metal parts, hot or cold. Metal is formed not machined so there are no wasteful chips. Swaging actually improves grain structure giving the part greater strength and an unusually fine finish.

ROTARY SWAGERS
In a Rotary Swager, the dies and hammers revolve around the work, producing perfect symmetrical pieces with an exceptional finish. SPX Precision Compnents offers nine basic sizes of Rotary Swaging machines ranging in capacity from needle size to 6" O.D. tubing. Rotary Swagers are available in two types: 2-die or 4-die which can swage harder materials and generally achieve greater reductions per pass. Fenn Impact Cutoff machines achieve extreme precision by employing a double impact cutting principle. The cut is accomplished by feeding the stock into a pair of precision cutoff dies within the impact block. These opposed dies are actuated with short, simultaneous strokes by two flywheel-cam assemblies. This Double Impact literally fractures the metal, cleanly cutting the stock at the interface of the two dies with little heat and with minimum distortion.

200 cutoff - 10,000 lbs. - 20 ft. lg. bars - 3/4 minimum - 2 maximum - 7-1/2 ft. wide x 20 ft. lg. x 6-1/2 ft. high
For all three Impact Cutoff machines, special consideration must be made of the bar ends, which must be burr free and straight. The overall bar cannot have more than a 1/4 camber in 5 ft. If hot rolled material is used, the dies must be made oversize which reduces the quality of the cut. Carbon content, if less than .20% will result in a roll over type cut.
