TURKS HEAD
TURKS HEAD INTRODUCTION
ADVANTAGES OF A TURKS HEAD
To those unfamiliar with Turks Head operation the question naturally arises Why use a Turks Head in place of other drawing methods? The following are important advantages that the Turks Head offers: Permits forming directly from round to square, rectangles and special shapes Takes bigger reductions per pass Greater flexibility because rolls are infinitely adjustable lower maintenance costs rolls can be reground Maintains uniform tolerances The Turks Head rolling principle produces less inherent friction In both the ferrous and nonferrous metal forming industries, Turks Heads are used as single units and in tandem on common stands for wire and rod shaping. They also used in tandem with Rolling Mills, Bull Blocks and Drawbenches.

TYPES OF FENN TURKS HEADS UNIVERSAL MODELS

For producing accurate squares and rectangles directly from round wire at speeds up to 1,500 FPM. Any square or rectangle within the capacity of the Turks Head can be set up by merely adjusting the position of the rolls. Eight models are available.

PLAIN AND COMBINATION MODELS

For producing special shapes either from entry rounds or preformed rough shapes, or to put edge contours on flat metal ribbons or tapes. Maximum roll openings range from 15/16" x 3/4" to 1-3/8" x 3". Combination models combine the features of both universal and plain types. Speeds up to 1,500 FPM. Twelve models available.

POWER-DRIVEN TURKS HEADS

Both plain and combination Turks Heads can be supplied with power-driven rolls eliminating the need for a pull-through device. This is advantageous for forming irregular shapes that distort when coiled, for materials of low tensile strength or precious metal wire where the leader cannot be wasted in threading.

The name Turks Head was in all probability applied to this particular metalworking machine because of a fancied resemblance between the decorative four-strand Turks Head knot and the four rolls of the machine.

The Turks Head is a metal forming machine. It may be compared to an adjustable draw die but is actually infinitely adjustable within its limiting dimensions. The Turks Head operates on the Rolling Mill principle and imparts the same qualities to the metal as the Rolling Mill does, namely, superior surface finish, accurate size and shape, and improved grain structure of the metal. The Turks Head differs from a Rolling Mill in the number and arrangement of rolls. The Turks Head utilizes two pair of rolls, one pair is arranged vertically and the other pair horizontally. In all types of Turks Heads the rolls are infinitely adjustable. Each basic type of Fenn Turks Head is designed to meet a particular requirement of precision wire or rod shaping. With the exception of power-driven models, all types require a pull-through power source such as a Drawbench, a Bull Block, a double capstan, a shedding drum or a Rolling Mill. To obtain high production speeds and hold tolerances within acceptable limits, certain basic operating rules must be followed. Proper application of Turks Head equipment cannot be overemphasized. It must be understood the Turks Head is not intended to be substitute for a Rolling Mill. However, certain fundamental rules are applicable to both machines where size control, surface finish, accessories or combination use is concerned.

SIZE CONTROL
Built with extreme accuracy by highly skilled craftsman, Fenn Turks Heads will form sections to close tolerances when properly used. The unique design and construction of interlocking slides permit infinite adjustment. Within the physical size of each Turks Head, SPX Precision Compnents has engineered the highest possible bearing capacity using precision heavy-duty bearings.

SURFACE FINISH
Although surface irregularities cause no particular difficulty, a higher quality entry stock will result in a better finished product. Bad surface defects cannot be eliminated completely, and failure to remove oxides and scale will cause the rolls to wear more rapidly. It is further recommended that lime coatings be removed from wire prior to forming, since it tends to build up on the rolls causing roll separation and consequent tolerance changes as well as bearing overload.

TURKS HEAD & WIRE SHAPING MILLS

* All rectangles made from round wire are confined to W T ratios of 2 to 1 or less Capacities are based on mild steel (T.S. = 60000 PSI) Maximum squares and rectangles given represent those which can be made from the proper entry round in one pass.

Always do more than is required of you. Gen. George Patton, Jr.

Turks Heads are available as single units or in tandem, usually on a common stand. A typical tandem wire shaping mill shown at the left consist of two Model 4TH Combination Type Turks Heads with a shedding drum providing the necessary pull-through power.

For other tensiles: Maximum square or rectangle varies inversely as the 2/3 power of the tensile strength. New Max. Sq. = Original Max. Sq. x 1530 (Tensile Strength) 2/3 Pull required varies directly as the area of the shape and the tensile strength.

BEARING CAPACITY VS. SPEED

The capacities are to be interpreted as follows: 1. To obtain commercially sharp corners, two passes through one Turks Head, or one pass through two Turks Heads in tandem, is required. The former is preferable where extreme accuracy is required. 2. If sharp corners are not necessary, and slightly greater size tolerance is permissible, one pass through a single Turks Head is adequate. 3. All entry stock should be annealed before rolling. 4. Size shown may be the side of a square, or the width of a rectangle with W/T ratio of less than 2 to 1. TENSILE STRENGTH For any given reduction, the required roll separating force is proportional to the tensile strength. In general, the higher the tensile strength of the metal, the closer the tolerances on finished dimensions.

IMPORTANT Specifications for High Speed Turks Heads are shown in red on the above charts and model numbers are designated with the suffix HS.

The combination Turks Head/Rolling Mill shown is part of a wire shaping line that is used to make small square and rectangle sections from round, high speed steel entry material. The line includes a basket payoff reel, a repass payoff reel, straightener, sizing Turks Head, 8" diameter Rolling Mill, finishing Turks Head with double capstan and a 1,000 lb. capacity traversing take-up reel.

Coils are wound onto a drum, which is driven by a hydraulic traversing reel. A turnstile incorporating a double drum arrangement is provided to enable one coil to be wound while the other is being removed making the operation as efficient as possible. SPX Precision Components can tailor any design to meet our customers exact requirements and production demands.

Spoolers
SPX Precision Components can provide a full range of wire processing equipment including Coiling and Spooling Equipment, Rod and Wire Payoff Systems, Rewind Equipment and Wire, Rod and Coil Handling Systems. We welcome the opportunity to serve you and contribute to your metal forming success.

SWAGING MACHINES
The low-cost way to point, reduce and form rod, tube or wire
Swaging is a special type of forging in which metal is formed by a rapid succession of hammer blows. It is easily the most economical method ever employed to point tubing, rod, and wire for redraw and to size, reduce, shape, taper, bond or form metal parts, hot or cold. Metal is formed not machined so there are no wasteful chips. Swaging actually improves grain structure giving the part greater strength and an unusually fine finish.

ROTARY SWAGERS
In a Rotary Swager, the dies and hammers revolve around the work, producing perfect symmetrical pieces with an exceptional finish. SPX Precision Compnents offers nine basic sizes of Rotary Swaging machines ranging in capacity from needle size to 6" O.D. tubing. Rotary Swagers are available in two types: 2-die or 4-die which can swage harder materials and generally achieve greater reductions per pass. HYDRO & TUBE END FORMERS

HYDROFORMERS
Fenn Hydroformers are widely used for assembling parts such as fittings onto cable, and for making reductions between shoulders such as those on convoluted tubing. Hydroforming is a modification of the rotary swaging principle whereby hydraulically operated wedges are used to close the dies while the spindle is rotating. In this way, work can be inserted before and removed after swaging.

Fenn Impact Cutoff machines achieve extreme precision by employing a double impact cutting principle. The cut is accomplished by feeding the stock into a pair of precision cutoff dies within the impact block. These opposed dies are actuated with short, simultaneous strokes by two flywheel-cam assemblies. This Double Impact literally fractures the metal, cleanly cutting the stock at the interface of the two dies with little heat and with minimum distortion.

the Model 125, which has a capacity of 1-1/4" maximum diameter mild steel: and the Model 200, which has capacity of 2 maximum diameter mild steel.

Other Feeding Systems

For coiled stock, the machine can be equipped with a payoff reel and combination pinch roll/hydraulic driven straightener, which brings stock up to the Impact roll feed. When shorter than normal slugs or long lengths of small diameter stock are to be cut, press or hitch feeds are also available.

A Fenn Impact Cutoff machine is ideal for producing:

Roller and needle bearing rollers Automotive parts Hand tools chisel, screwdriver shaft, sockets Motor shafts Bolts, studs, rivets, dowel pins Cold forming slugs Drill and tap blanks

Bar feeders for Model 200 handle stock from 3/4" diameter to 2" diameter in lengths up to 20 feet with a 10,000 lb. capacity. Bars are individually released from an inclined ramp, and axially driven by feed rolls into the dies. A micro-adjust positive stop triggers the die stroke and assures extreme accuracy of slug length.

200 cutoff - 10,000 lbs. - 20 ft. lg. bars - 3/4 minimum - 2 maximum - 7-1/2 ft. wide x 20 ft. lg. x 6-1/2 ft. high

For all three Impact Cutoff machines, special consideration must be made of the bar ends, which must be burr free and straight. The overall bar cannot have more than a 1/4 camber in 5 ft. If hot rolled material is used, the dies must be made oversize which reduces the quality of the cut. Carbon content, if less than .20% will result in a roll over type cut.
