THE CIVIL RIGHTS PROBLEM

The racial clashes that have been taking place in various areas of the United States have been the subject of numerous newspaper articles, radio broadcasts and editorial cartoons. Some of them have been noteworthy. One in particular is worth studying because it presents most of the basic arguments in the racial issue and leaves the door open to bring up one point which should be considered. The article to which we refer was written by the Rev. Martin Luther King, Negro leader, while he was in jail in Birmingham, Alabama, recently. In one portion of it, Dr. King states why he feels demonstrations are necessary by saying the following: I guess it is easy for those who have never felt the stinging darts of segregation to say wait. But when you have seen vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whim. "When you have seen hate filled policemen curse, kick, brutalize, and even kill your black brothers and sisters with impunity "When you see the vast majority of your 20 million Negro brothers smothering in an air-tight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society; 2 UNDERSTANDING

"When you suddenly find your tongue twisted and your speech stammering as you seek to explain to your six-year-old daughter why she can't go to the public amusement park that has just been advertised on television, and see tears welling up in her little eyes when she is told that Fun town is closed to colored children, and see the depressing clouds of inferiority begin to form in her little mental sky, and see her begin to distort her little personality by unconsciously developing a bitterness toward white people; When you have to concoct an answer for a five-year-old son asking in agonizing pathos: `Daddy, why do white people treat colored people so mean?' "When you take a cross-country drive and find it. necessary to sleep night after night in the uncomfortable corners of your automobile because no motel will accept you; "When you are humiliated day in and day out by nagging signs reading 'white' men and `colored;' "When your first name becomes `nigger' and your middle name becomes "boy" (however old you are) and your last name becomes `John,' and when your wife and mother are never given the respected title `Mrs.' "When you are harried by day and haunted by night by the fact that you are a Negro, living constantly at tip-toe stance never quite knowing what to expect next and plagued with inner fears and outer resentments; "When you are forever fighting a degenerating sense of nobodyness-then you will understand why we find it difficult to wait. "There comes a time when the cup of endurance runs over, and men are no longer willing to be plunged into an abyss of injustice where they experience the bleakness of corroding despair. I hope, sirs, you can understand our legitimate & unavoidable impatience.

"We can certainly feel sympathy for anyone who is subjected to the conditions described above. However, in considering this article, it should be remembered that the privations therein described as being suffered by the colored people in the large cities of the United States are by no means unique characteristics of the colored races. There actually are just as many whites who suffer the same privations in these cities. In virtually every case where privations suffered AUGUST, 1963 3

by the colored race are cited as an example of inequity, you can find that privations are being suffered by an equally large group of members of the white race. So while there is no question of the fact that everything possible should be done to improve these conditions, the conditions themselves are not necessarily an evidence that the colored race has been unduly held down and caused to suffer privations. Leaders of civil rights demonstrations might do well to consider this point, for in pressing for equality among the races they run the risk of pushing too hard and too fast, and thereby alienating the support of many Americans who have been working many years for the upliftment of all who suffer privations, be they colored or white.

YOUR PHYSICAL BODY, TOMB OR TEMPLE?

How does your physical body fit today? Does your body feel as if it is being worn as a weightless garment? Does every movement feel at ease? Does it feel as if it is whole, as one without any infliction of discomfort? Does it feel as if it vibrates spontaneously to the rhythm of harmonious movement? Is its texture firmly pliable, supple and strong? Considering these simple, probing questions honestly and intently for a brief time, produces a very conscious awareness of noticing within oneself the little imperfections which at times cause languid states and heightened discomforts within the physical form. How did these twinges of pain and inharmonious actions come to be? Just how did this happen? What is the cause? Certainly another could not have produced these types of conditions, although blame may possibly be placed upon someone else to relieve oneself of what it does not care to recognize. But basically, the feeling of pain, in harmony or whatever is out of order with good healthful wholesomeness, is a signal, a signal to which by being alert, a recognition that a discordant note of life has been enacted. We may take this to be a very simple, everyday happening in life, but the all too sad truth of this matter is that very, very little attention and heed is paid to these signals, these facts of life, possibly 4 UNDERSTANDING

due to the nature of the attitude held towards pain. Developing a new attitude through the recognition that every discomfort noticed is a special blessing, an Angel of Mercy as it were, telling us that an error has occurred, enables us in this disclosing way to make the necessary corrections to our thinking and our doing, so that little hurts are corrected and big hurts do not follow.

Always there is the choice of choosing harmony instead of in harmony; every movement, every action is one of continual choosing. Every sane, sensible person would choose perfect health in place of ill health, but not every person will choose to follow the way to perfect health. Many proclaim perfect health is not possible to have, yet many regarded as Masters on this plane of life, Ascended Masters, the Radiant Ones of the Great White Brotherhood and the many great Cosmic Beings who freely travel the universe, all teach and all state that Man rises only from his imperfections to Perfection by his willingness to work through conscious effort to make his life and his physical garment perfect. Only through the choice for Perfection over imperfection, of attaining to harmony in place of in harmony, and all the wonderful results of conscious living in preference to unconscious living, does the experience of wearing a beautiful fleshly garment as a Temple become a reality. The physical body is truly the Temple of the Living God, one in which the Soul-Spirit in-breathes and outwardly expresses the life substance of the universe. All limitations to its longevity can fall away, for the Temple was created to be ever renewed by its wearer when its true relationship has been realized. With the out-pouring of the spiritual forces now in process, in this the New Age, Man will come to know, as have all the greatly Illumined Ancients, that his physical body will no longer have to pass the way of being his tomb, but rather he will experience life from within his Temple as it was meant to be when he has fully realized that what his consciousness dwells upon, there also is his understanding. - Donald Knight Milford, Michigan AUGUST, 1963 5

Riversiders See Mystery Red Light (From the Riverside Press, June 19, 1963) Several Riverside area residents reported seeing a mysterious red light high in the eastern sky last night about 10 o'clock.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department reported about half a dozen calls reporting the light. No calls were logged by the Riverside Police Department. Two Rubidoux residents called the Press Enterprise to inquire about the light. Bill Wilson, 4585 Plaza Lane, in the Jurupa Hills area, said the bright red light appeared to remain stationary and, while he was calling the paper, a neighbor reported that it had gone out. Wilson said the light appeared to be about 45 degrees up from where he was looking almost due east. Bob Davenport, 6051 De La Vista, off of Pacific and south of Mission, said he observed the light first when it appeared to be moving from south to north. He said that he and neighbors watched the light for about 15 minutes. Davenport said it would move then remain stationary and then move again. It turned east, he said, and appeared to move up and away, growing dimmer as it appeared to go higher. It was bright enough to reflect on the roof of cars parked in the street, Davenport said. He said that the light disappeared after changing color from red to white. Both men said that it did not look like an airplane running light or any other man-made object. They also said that it was too specific a point of light to have been a reflection from the Kaiser steel mills in Fontana. There was no official explanation of the light from any official source. 6 UNDERSTANDING

Space Smog Might Hamper Astronauts (From United Press International, June 6, 1963) LOS ANGELES -America's astronauts could die of "space smog," according to one of the nation's leading bioastronautic scientists. This chilling possibility was advanced by Dr. Thomas B. Weber, who said "A tightly-sealed capsule in outer space might be turned into a death chamber by a smog of contaminants emitted from the astronauts own body." He said these contaminants might become lethal during an extended period of time in the closed "trapline" atmosphere of manned interplanetary probes and long-duration space stations. The more men in the spaceship, the more deadly it could become. "This looms as possibly the most pressing problem we face in preparing for future deep space travel," Weber said. "Space smog would be 100 times worse than the smog plaguing Los Angeles."

Mysterious Lights in Polar Sky (From New Zealand Herald, July 11, 1962) CHRISTCHURCH-(Press Assn.)-A "very strange object" has been seen over Cape Hallet in Antarctica, said the New Zealand scientific leader of Hallet Station, Mr. C. B. Taylor, yesterday. Speaking by radiotelephone, he said the object had three yellowish-white lights, the centre light being midway between the other two and much brighter than the others. The object traveled from south-west to north-east, with the highest point in the north-west about 45 degrees from the zenith. When the object was in the northern sky, it emitted a brilliant flash of white light. As it neared the horizon, the smaller lights disappeared in the auroral glow. "It took about three to four minutes to cross the sky, from about 11:10 p.m. to about 11:13 p.m." said Mr. Taylor. "It was too slow for a meteorite, but too fast for a satellite. Seven of the station crew of 18 saw the object on Saturday night and it was photographed by the all-sky auroral camera. AUGUST, 1963 Mystery (From New Zealand Weekly News, Feb. 20, 1963) A photograph at the D.S.I.R. auroral station at Lauder, Otago, confirms that Mr. C. B. Taylor, who was at Cape Hallet last June, saw a "mystery object" traveling across the sky. Dr. M. Gadsen says that a long-exposure photograph taken on the all-sky camera showed the object's trail. It was not a meteor, and there were no reports that a satellite burned out in that area at the time. We are puzzled by it," he says. Backgammon 2,000 Years Ago (From Medford, Oregon, Mail Tribune, June 21, 1963) A 2,000-year-old backgammon board, complete with playing pieces, believed to date back to the Hittite civilization, has been excavated in Turkey, according to the National Geographic Society. A freely translated inscription on the set reads, "Perhaps you will lose money, but you will have lots of fun." Russian Writer Says Martians Have Visited Earth (From United Press International, June 8, 1963) 7

MOSCOW -- Tales of Martians landing on the earth have finally reached Russia, the Soviet Tass News Agency reported today. But Tass said two of the best scientists in the land have dismissed them as "farfetched fantasy." "The hypothesis of rational. life on Mars has been clearly disproved," said the Chairman of the Soviet Meteoric Committee, Vasily Fesenkov, and the President of the Astronomical-Geodesical Society, Dmitri Mertynov. The scientists were commenting on an article in today's government organ Izvestia by Alexander Kazantsev. The article claimed that rational beings from Mars "have visited our planet more than once before, and now, too, are persistently knocking at our door." exudes a strange "perspiration" at New York's American Museum of Natural History. British Scientists Charge U.S. Bomb Changed Atmosphere (From United Press International, May 20, 1963) LONDON-A group of British scientists has charged America's 1962 high altitude H-bomb explosionapparently "planned purely for military reason" -- changed the earth's environment and interfered with space research. The group, which included well-known astronomer Sir Bernard Lovell, issued a report on an investigation into effects of high altitude nuclear tests on scientific research for the British government's Ministry of Science. The report said the U.S. explosion of July 9, 1962, "injected trapped particles into the earth's magnetic field in numbers sufficient to make an important change in the charged particle environment of the earth." It said absence of data published either before or after the testing contrast with usual American practiceindicated it was mounted purely for military purposes. It said the charged particles have interfered with the functioning of many artificial satellites by damaging their solar cells or semiconductor devises. Man Has Hobby of `Monstering' (From Grit Sunday News, Williamsport, Pa., June 16, 1963)

Monster-watching is the unusual pastime of Richard Need, a 31 year-old London documentary film maker. Each year he drives 550 miles from London to Loch Ness, in Northern Scotland, to watch and wait to film a monster, if one should ever show itself. He says he has been going to the area for 3 consecutive years and is still waiting to get a glimpse of the monster. " After reading all the books and articles and speaking to several eyewitnesses, I am prepared to stick my neck out and say that the animal in Loch Ness is as yet unclassified by zoology, that it is, probably 30 or 40 feet long and that it probably resembles a plesiosaur (a prehistoric monster)," he said. Need's wife, Jayne, thinks his pastime is a fairly harmless form of lunacy. She calls it "monstering." AUGUST, 1983 9

UNDERSTANDING AT THE CALIFORNIA STATE FAIR

Understanding, Inc., through the initiative of the Sacramento, Calif. unit, will have a booth at the California State Fair, at Sacramento, Calif. from Aug. 28 to Sept. 8. This 12-day event is attended each day by anywhere from 86,000 to 200,000 visitors, presenting an unusual opportunity to gain exposure with many thousands of persons. Films will be shown and literature will be given out at the booth. The Sacramento unit has taken on the bulk of the planning work and plans to supply the manpower to tend the booth all 12 days. But other forms of assistance are needed and the aid of all Understanding units and members is solicited. A full report from Berea Wheelihan, unit secretary, follows: A letter was written to each Unit in the U.S. as well a Canada and Sweden informing them of this contemplated undertaking... that Understanding, Inc. is to have a representation at the State Fair in Sacramento, Calif. beginning August 28th to Sept. 8th inclusive, with local Unit No. 46 acting as sponsors and prevailing on all Units for co-operation, especially in a financial approach. A committee was appointed with Steele M. Goodman as sponsor; Berea Wheelihan, chairman; Irene Kennedy, treasurer; Dick Kverno and Wendell Tarr as coworkers. The State Fair officials were contacted and application was made for space for a double booth, meaning we furnish labor and material and build the booth according to specifications ... 12 X 20 Ft. and which should be adequate to seat approximately 30 people... who will be privileged to view a motion picture on flying saucers. This will be shown continuously each day for a 12 hour period. Material is being compiled on `Understanding' and the true fundamentals which it has represented since the time of its inception, also circulars on the many sightings of flying saucers and the phenomenal aspect as seen in our skies and attributed to beings from other worlds. The unit at British Columbia has agreed to loan us the motion picture film for which we are most grateful. For those who are mathematically minded it can be readily understood that to furnish a staff of 3 people for a 12 hour period means to

furnish 36 hours of labor each day. This could be interpreted as a simplified matter but taking into consideration the fair is in operation for a 12 day session which in actuality means furnishing 432 hours of manual labor in order to promote this project in a successful manner We, the nucleus of Unit No. 46, are cognizant of the fact that our fair brings out 86,000 to 200,000 daily and we state wholeheartedly that we are willing to dedicate ourselves to the extent of assuring you we will furnish the 432 hours of labor, but we trust we are not too presumptuous in asking that all units please come to our assistance financially. WE NEED YOUR HELP. Thousands of circulars will have to be printed and this item is basically our biggest expense. Remember, this is for a worthy cause. This should enable many souls to get a true perspective of Understanding and an awareness not heretofore realized and should furnish a source of greater enlightenment. BINDING THE SOUL

The modern church is so busy binding men's souls to their false teachings that they completely overlook truth as taught by the Master. The Master, Jesus, taught and demonstrated eternal life and dominion over physical things. He taught that the Kingdom is now within men and need only to be understood and practiced. He taught abnegation of self, purity and chastity. He taught that the world was one thing and heaven another place and condition of understanding. He did not teach that life ended in the grave, and He did not recognize creeds and formalities of men, invented by those who would bind the soul, for He taught freedom indeed. He taught that every man is a potential God-like Being, if his soul was not bound to some man-made teaching, which contradicts Truth, taught by Him. Today the Master has called upon His Associates in the heavens to help Him in His battle to free men's souls. As a result we have AUGUST, 1963 11

thousands of books and writings direct from the heavens from such as Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and many others of like importance. These writings most so-called Christians reject, the binding process has been so thorough. Yet it is true that every man is free to read what he desires and all the constriction is not due to our religious leaders, for men must consent to limitation. Free will is a gift of the Creator to all.

The main reason we are forbidden to read freely all writings is fear that men will break away from old creeds, some of which are thousands of years old and out of date, and our contributions would not support a dominating hierarchy of ignorance of the Master's true teachings. So through fear, taught and supported by this hierarchy, men do not know where to turn to rescue their own free and independent minds. Dear Editor Having an unusual news item clipping (sorry there is no date of publication), I thought perhaps as a newspaperman you may be able to run down the authentic (U.P.I.) story. If those "neon like" balls of stone really produce glowing light, like the man says, it must be a natural phenomenon. It reminds me of such an incidence in the early placer mining days in Josephine County, Oregon, when a peculiar pebble was found in the sluice boxes. It was too hard an element for the blacksmith to break on his anvil. It also glowed and at night it virtually lit up a tent house. Finally a Klamath Indian, an employee at the mine, quit his job and when he left, the glowing stone also disappeared. Nothing was ever heard of the two afterward. TRIBE OF NAKED NEW GUINEA WOMEN USE STONES FOR LIGHT

LONDON- (U.P.)-Weird tales of a tribe of naked women in the jungles of New Guinea, who light their villages with strange, glowing "neon-like" balls of stone and who treat the males of the tribe like slaves, were told Saturday in reports reaching here from responsible sources. Strangely enough, the reports emerge from conferences on street lighting and traffic in Pretoria, South Africa. C.S. Downey, a delegate to the conference, told of "a community of females in a jungle valley near Mt. Wilhelmina, in New Guinea, who go about their work completely nude, disdaining even the tufts of grass worn by women of other tribes." The jungle amazons, he said, despise the male sex and imprison their men in caves. Downey said traders who penetrated this strange valley of women reported they were "terrified to see many moons suspended in the air and shining with great brightness all night long." Downey said the suspended "moons" were described as "stone balls about 12 feet in diameter and mounted on high columns." "When the shadows stole across the valley, the huge stone balls began to glow with mysterious light," he said. He suggested that "these women, cut off from the rest of mankind, may have perfected a system of artificial illumination equal, if not superior, to the 20th century." The tribe, Downey said, is ruled by a queen and although the quota of men is tolerated to insure the continuance of the race, their position is similar to that of slaves.

Dear Editor: As the reports of favorite books come in, tabulation on the different books might be kept and these most often mentioned by readers, be recommended to all. I still have others to recommend when time permits, but this one herein mentioned is my favorite and most helpful which I refer to often. The inner nature and purpose of man is unveiled via understanding of the metaphorical language underlying all sacred teachings. Truly this is an UNDERSTANDING book, containing consistent explanations of the variety of religions in the world. As I see them here, they orbit. about the earth at about the speed of the moon, but are not in the area of the moon; they appear as large stars but are light yellow with rays emanating down from them. When I first saw them, one was very close to earth and much larger than I see it now. I have not heard of any of our observatories reporting any new sightings, so get out and take a look. From here at about, nine o'clock, the largest one is about overhead and at midnight it appears in the western sky. I work nights and when ever I get. outside I look for them. Book reviews

"Men Among Mankind"- Brinsley le Poer Trench "Men Among Mankind" is an important book, important because it is a valuable addition to the knowledge of, and discussion about, a significant aspect of U.F.O. research. The author traces the careers of a number of remarkable men and women who have been pre-eminent among their contemporaries and have left major impressions on history. He feels that these outstanding characteristics point up unusual origins for the ideas and personalities involved. He presents facts and suggests interpretations of some of the ancient legendary accounts of the pre-history of mankind. The author also explores the mystery surrounding some of the awesome architectural remains of past civilizations such as the Baalbeck Terrace, the pyramid of Gizeh, the Gate of the Sun at Tiahuanaco and the immense symbols of the zodiac in Somerset, England. By this investigation and discussion, the author has presented increased evidence of a race of beings from elsewhere with an intense and continuing interest in the affairs of this little planet. The book presents a challenge because the author presumes almost too much foreknowledge of many fields of metaphysical and "New Age" study on the part of his readers. This fact should not deter anyone from reading the book as this same wide-ranging list of sources presents a valuable increase in understanding and suggests many interesting avenues for further research to the reader. The skeptics will probably dismiss the book summarily as a compilation of wild theories based on the nebulous myths and folk lore of illiterate barbarians, but sober reflection by those interested in furthering their knowledge should lead to a realization of the value of this book as an interpretive history and as a basis for further research and discussion. -Gary Sherman Merlin, Ore.

CONVENTION REPORT
Another very successful "UNDERSTANDORAMA" took place at Harmony Grove, the week end of June 29th and 30th, and some 350 were in attendance for the two-day conclave. After Mrs. Edna Basmajian, of the El Monte unit, led off with the reading of the "Great Invocation", followed by an admirable outline of the aims and objects of Understanding, by Mrs. Esther Stilgebouer, President of the Riverside unit, the proceedings got into full swing. Among the speakers who took part were Col. Arthur Burks, noted writer and reader of the sub-conscious mind; Gayne Myers, with his explanation of the "Why" of our names; Fern Schaffer, the derivation of words, and their proper use; Calvin Girvin, a study of ancient world history; Frank Stranges, with a talk on the real power behind our governments, accompanied by many slides of UFO'S; and James Hendrickson, the genial President of the Harmony Grove Association, and his "Spirit" slides.

Roland Hunt, gave a most interesting talk on tone and color; Marianne Francis, with excerpts from messages received telepathically; Georgia Gecht on an exposition of the "Urantia Book" accompanied by several graphs of the universe; Hope Troxell, leader of the School of Thought movement, which she was divinely instructed to inaugurate, gave an interesting comparison of it. with the philosophy of the "Essenes" recently brought to light by the Dead Sea Scrolls. Leroy Roberts gave a demonstration on the piano of Celestial music, and to wind up the Convention, Wayne Aho described many of the new retreats that are in process of formation, and brought goodwill messages from Dan Fry, the founder of Understanding, 16 UNDERSTANDING

who is now in Merlin, Oregon, where headquarters will eventually be located. All in all, it was one of the best Understanding gatherings, and the caliber of the speakers and their topics was of a very high level of consciousness. The weather was perfect, and the cooperation of the Harmony Grove officials all contributed to the general welfare and enjoyment of those who were fortunate to attend.

Radio Understanding Report All members of the Merlin Radio Guild are invited to a meeting of guild members on Sunday, Aug. 25 at Merlin, Ore. Tentatively the meeting is scheduled to be held on radio hill, site of the station. The fund for Radio Understanding has now reached $1,266.20. This amount has come from more than 100 Merlin Radio Guild members and contributing units or organizations. Recent contributors have included Mr. D. B. News of Crescent Engineering and Research At a meeting of the stockholders of Crescent Engineering and Research company held on June 15, Mr. Coleman Campbell, long one of our Understanding family and husband of the national treasurer, was elected to the board of directors of Crescent. The election was part of a partial reorganization move to stimulate the somewhat lagging research program of that organization. Coming Events The Universarium Foundation of Portland, Ore., will present a AUGUST, 1963 19

program on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 17 and 18 at the New Era Camp, located near Highway 99E about 6 miles south of Oregon City, Ore. Zelrun Karsleigh and other members of the group will speak. New Unit Organized At Miramonte, Calif. Understanding Unit #58 has been organized at Miramonte, Calif., with Estalee Peterson of Allah Garden Retreat, Miramonte, as its first president and secretary. True Day is acting as the unit's corresponding secretary. The unit is starting off its program with lessons from Dr. Roy B. Oliver on "New Age Spiritual Science." Miramonte is just off Highway 180 about 54 miles east of Fresno, Calif., and just 12 miles from the Kings Canyon National Park. In the near future, the unit plans to sponsor an "Interplanetary Science Research Conference." Weekly meetings are held at the retreat every Saturday evening. Everyone is welcome to attend, bringing their sleeping bags and groceries for overnight if they wish. Wayne Aho has given talks for the new unit on the subject "New Age Understanding." News of the Units New members of Unit # 1 at Merlin, Ore., are Jim and Katherine Mosch. They have moved to Merlin with their family of three girls, Mara, Linda and Judy. Previously they were with San Francisco, Calif. unit #11. From Sven-Erik Asklund, president of Stockholm, Sweden Unit #l, come these notes: "We have received our charter and it has arrived safely. Thank you very much. We have hung it here on the wall. We are so happy. We are very interested in the Inter Unit bulletin. It can give us much, and we would like to write about our work here and the results. I am now going to translate tire most important of this result. I hope we can present it to you in the Bulletin at the end of August... In first hand I can tell you that we have some strange photographs taken when we do some experiments. It is very interesting, and we hope we can get more like this ... There are many wonderful people who send their warmest greetings to you in Understanding. Fresno, Calif., Unit #59 recently held an election of officers. The officers are Richard V. Johnson of 5873 F. Herndon Ave., Clovis, Calif., president; Rev. John R. Kingham, vice president; and Shirley M. Saunders, secretary-treasurer. Also electing new officers recently was Sayre, Pa. Unit #51. New president is Mrs. Walter Covell of Milan RD #1, Pa. Other officers are Mrs. Harry Shay, vice president; and Mrs. Frank Nigl, secretarytreasurer. Meetings are held the second Sunday of each month at the home of the president. Mrs. Nigl attended a grand spiritual and temporal council of North American Indians held at Wyalusing, Pa. in June. It was reported to be the first meeting of its kind in 208 years. History of Oakland Unit Being Written H. Taylor Buckner of 510 Fairbanks Ave., Oakland 10, Calif. is writing a history of Oakland, Unit, #3 as part of his master's thesis in the department of sociology at the University of California. He is interested in seeing any materials or information anyone may have about the unit., also called the Oakland Space Craft club. Anything sent to him will be returned promptly. ZIP Codes The Post Office department has assigned ZIP codes to all cities in the United States in an effort to speed up mail delivery. The ZIP code for Understanding's address at Pasadena, Calif. is 91104, while at Merlin, Ore. the code is 97539. The editors of Understanding magazine are happy to consider unsolicited manuscripts, both articles and poetry. Articles should not exceed 1,000 words (poetry 36 lines). Almost any type of material will be considered, providing that it is of a constructive nature and contributes to a better understanding of the subject matter employed. The editors are particularly interested in developing a greater degree of understanding among different peoples of the earth and an understanding of basic issues facing the people of this planet. Payment for articles accepted will be made upon publication at the rate of one cent per word (poetry 10 per line). The editors also are interested in seeing clippings of unusual items from newspapers and magazines, for which the sum of $1 per clipping published will be paid to the first person submitting it. All manuscripts should be typewritten, double-spaced and on one side of the sheet only. Manuscripts may not be returned unless accompanied by a self-addressed envelope bearing sufficient postage.
