Its wardens are knights enlisted into a military order having its headquarters in a mysterious and impervious place by the name of Monsalvat. Hence the knights set out to bring mankind the medicines it needs, to defend the oppressed, and to redress downtrodden rights. But not all the knights have stayed faithful; evil forces try to win over as many of them as possible, and the ranks of deserters form the army of Monsalvats bitterest foes. This legends secret meaning does not concern us here, but only such hints as are necessary to explain the symbol, whose essence ought to be clear by now, consisting in a spirit of Christian charity and mercy served by an enlightened mind and a chivalrous and enthusiastic heart.
