or twelve weeks during my fourth year, I was given the opportunity to try traditional design. For the program, I chose to recreate the appellate courthouse that is located Elgin, Illinois and to relocate it to a more downtown location. Part of the studio focus was on new urbanism, so I combined the courthouse, a building used by a select few, with some urbanistic principals in order to create a more active space. This included master site-planning and the addition of a new city square to front the courthouse. The plan also provided for the addition of some mixed-use shopping venues built into the exterior fabric of the courthouse. Another part of this project was to incorporate and explore sustainable technology. By using a pre-cast concrete structural system, my new courthouse had good thermal mass for cooling and warming. Natural day lighting was also a focus in my design, and the building made use of interior light wells that would not only bring in light, but also help with cross-ventilation.

ared has an unquestioned reputation of integrity among his peers and in all my interactions with him over many years. He has demonstrated leadership even in situations requiring courage. He is one of the most affable persons and generous team-players in my experience. Jared is a talented designer with high standards for achieving competency: the Boston City Hall proposal demonstrates his capacity to take on a complex site, with a multi-layered program, a design partner for another building in the ensemble, a real commitment to forward-thinking sustainable building design, in a design that is contextually sensitive to the local building culture. Jared has more knowledge and interest in how buildings go together than most students or even recent architecture graduates; having long experience in practice myself, I know this is a valued factor in architecture firms. His skill with digital tools, both number of software applications and drawing quality, is obvious from his work and further evidenced in his professional experience teaching these tools to others. I recommend Jared Natalino without reservation.

or my graduate year studio course, I recreated Bostons City Hall and its surrounding plaza. One of the main goals of the project was to find and identify the problems created by the existing City Hall and try to solve those problems with a new design. I believed that the existing buildings mass did not work on the site and the style of the building did not appropriately represent the civic character of the city government. Boston residents have naturally become disconnected from the building because of the way it misrepresents the character of the government and the city it is supposed to symbolize. My proposal looked to find a style that provided a civic presence for the city, while also looking into sustainable solutions. The building is naturally ventilated and lit through the use of large atriums and adequate windows. A public market was integrated into the main floor of the building in an attempt to create a building that is more diverse in its programing and engaging to the public.

have had the privilege to know Jared in both a professional and scholarly atmosphere, and he excels at both. Professionally, Jared has enough drive and attention to detail to handle anything placed in his care, as well as having the added bonus of being flexible in response to the demands others might put on him. Academically, Jared can pursue an idea, and all its nuances, until brought to full fruition. In tandem, these strengths lead Jared to be able to deliver idealistically strong product in appropriate time frames...which not many can say. Jeremy Lindsey Project Manager R.R. Browne Architects

end traditional homes. The firm prides itself on strong programming, site-sensitive planning, and a focus on rich interior and exterior detailing. I gained valuable experience working closely with the principle architect, Rick Browne, throughout my entire time at this firm. R.R. Browne Architects gave me a wonderful introductory experience to the business of architecture. I engaged in a hands-on approach for all aspects of the projects - from the early design meetings, to sketching details and the completion of construction documents.

ared is the rare designer that is as comfortable building digital models of buildings as as he is building the real thing. His construction experience informs his thoughtful approach to designing and detailing spaces; he always looks ahead to what needs to be done next...and starts doing it. His professional manner and absolutely positive demeanor allowed me to have complete confidence in his managing of consultants, contractors and interacting with clients.

tudio Talo is a small firm working out of Evanston, Illinois. Studio Talos goal is to create projects that reflect the desires of its clients, while introducing sustainable principles whenever possible. I learned a lot working at Studio Talo because I was able to take projects from schematic design to on-site construction administration. Studio Talo helped me mature professionally and taught me how to manage projects and work with clients, contractors, and other consultants on a daily basis. I had the privilege to work on both residential and smallscale commercial projects.
