The Green Weekly

Cygnet Sea Dragons Junior Soccer Club Inc
1. Welcome
Woodbridge came and then went, with only defeat as their experience this time round. U6 won 8-2 and the U8 took the spoils 7-0. The Whalers may have had the edge last year, but these two results put us on the path to taking the D'entrecasteaux Cup. All our U6 to U8 teams were victorious this round with a number of strong wins. The U12 may have experienced what many in top flights of football experience regularly and that is bad refereeing. Tho it has to be said that the offside rule is often had to police as the sole referee and being an amateur makes it even more difficult. We will never know if it was pure accident or an intentional mistake, however the U12 team is pushing hard and their first victory is just around the corner.

This week Played 10 Won 6 Lost 4 Draw - For 43 Against 21 This season Played 50 Won 31 (62%) Lost 15 Draw 3 For 214 Against 114

THE FOOTBALL RAMBLER

Funny Names XI Footballers with Ridiculous Names
When Scottish striker David Goodwillies rape case was dropped, it was a clear sign that surely no man with such a name could commit such an horrific crime After hearing the joyous news that Goodwillie would be gracing the Premier League, joining Blackburn Rovers only a few days after the case was dropped, fans across the world will be trying to think up some brilliant chants in order to provoke Goodwillie into some kind of explosive reaction. Goodwillie is just one of many ridiculous names of footballers out there. This week, I present the Funny Names XI. The Funny Names XI Goalkeeper Norman Conquest Australians are renowned for their laid back, comical approach to life. The parents of Aussie goalkeeper mustve had a brilliant sense of humour (or more likely were drunk) when they thought up this great name. Right Back Rod Fanni When Andy Gray heard that Big Sam Allardyce was considering putting Fanni in Newcastles defence in 2007, there mustve been hell to pay around the Sky Sports studios. Thankfully for Gray and his goblinesque side-kick Richard Keys, it quickly turned out it was only an unfortunately named French right-back. Rod Fanni was surely never going to be taken seriously in England with such a name. Left Back Chiqui Arce Originally named Francisco Javier Arce, the Paraguayan full-back was dubbed Chiqui (somewhere in a non-English speaking part of the world I assume). Normally Arce plays on the right, but with Fanni on one side and Arce on the other, it seems a perfect partnership could be in the making. I cant bear to think what will be in between the two

Centre Back Danny Shittu Oh dear, what a mess. Shittu has been around English football since the turn of the millennium. Now returning to the Premiership with QPR, Im sure the Nigerian International will be aiming to dominate smaller, and (especially) thinner strikers week-in week-out. Centre Back Have-a-look Dube Not much is known about good old Zimbabwean Have-a-look, one of several comically named Southern African footballers, alongside the Zambian Laughter Chilembe, and the South African pair of Naughty Mokoena and Tonic Chabalala. It kind of makes you think this is the way all names should be. Right Midfield Segar Bastard Bastard, on the other hand, is a less fortunate name to be born with. The Victorian Englishman played during the glory years of English football between 1873-87. Bastard was lucky enough to gain one international cap when England lost to Scotland 5-4 in 1880 and even refereed the 1878 FA Cup Final. Left Midfield Brian Pinas Before Newcastle had Fanni, they had Pinas. Although Pinas barely kicked a ball at St. James Park during his brief spell in the late nineties. The Dutch-Surinamese winger has spent most of his career in the Dutch First Division and now plays for RVV Hercules in the fourth tier of Dutch Football Centre Midfield Ars Bandeet No-one seems to know whether the legendary Ars Bandeet did infact exist. The story goes that he was a dominant force for the Algerian National Team in the 1970s, with opposition players even scared to turn their back whenever Bandeet was lurking. Centre Midfield Andre Muff Allegedly Andre brought the Swiss National team into disrepute for constant diving during the early Noughties. Muff had spells at FC Basel and Grasshopper in the Swiss First Division, and gained 4 caps for his country.

Centre Forward Bongo Christ Not to be confused with the supposed Son of God, Bongo is one of the greatest first names I have ever heard. The Congolese striker picked up four caps for the Congo National team, and is no doubt awesome at banging away on the African drum. Centre Forward David Goodwillie Despite his recent case clearing him of all wrongdoing, Goodwillie has a history of violence during the dark hours of night. Incidents in 2008 and 2009 left two people being assaulted, one being a bouncer who was left unconscious. He was deemed to be such a hooligan that Dundee manager Peter Houston placed a house arrest order on Goodwillie to avoid any future trouble. I suppose I might have a chip on my shoulder if I had such a name. Edition 8 June 1 COACHES BOX A Bad Case of Knack:

We went into the match against Glenorchy Knights, the team that thumped us seven nil in our first ever youth match, minus Jake Ainslie and Josh Wilson. Jake has been suffering from a nasty bout of ankle knack with symptoms appearing in both the ankles and feet, which hes been trying to shake off for a number of weeks without success resulting in him having to miss last Thursdays training as well as Saturdays match. Its a particularly severe strain that Jake has contracted, highly infectious and its going viral and threatening to decimate our U14 squad. Josh went down with it on Saturday morning with symptons including knee soreness in addition to the ever prevalent ankle pain. On a more positive front Silas, who had been suffering from a particularly troublesome case of nick-nack-paddy-wack for almost a week causing him to miss training, made an unexpected late recovery thereby enabling him to play in Saturdays match. Also positive was the signing of Ryan Lottering, our 100th registered Cygnet Sea Dragon so far in 2013. Many people are arguing that we have already exceeded last seasons effort when we finished up with 76 registered players. Only time will tell but its at least 14% more than the 56 we registered in 2011 and almost twice as many as the 48 we registered the year before that. Ryan is very skilled and comfortable on the ball, he reads the game well and organizes the players around him. Hes been used to playing at a higher level but I cant imagine that the songs and chanting can hold a candle to what hell experience at our club. Anyway we took the field full of resolute determination and with Isaac Beecroft winning a handy toss we found ourselves kicking with a strong cross field breeze slightly biased in our favour. We won a free kick on the left corner of the Glenorchy box after six minutes and Isaac used the breeze to good effect curling the ball over their keeper and into the net for 1-0 sending the vociferous Sea Dragon fans into raptures. Isaac wasnt finished though and soon afterwards he waltzed through their defense to slot home for number two amid ecstatic scenes on the touchline. Glenorchy though are a good side and once they got over their initial shock began to combine well and play some good football befitting the best team in the division. It wasnt long before they pulled a goal back but the Sea Dragons by now were also in full flight and in one of our many attacks Christian Sayers took the ball into the box before delivering a master-class in finishing to restore our two goal advantage sending the significant Sea Dragon touchline contingent into seventh heaven. We were playing our best football of the season, our opponents were on the rack and we were creating numerous chances which alas found their way either to their keeper or narrowly wide of the post. I felt we needed a fourth to reflect our dominance and give us a substantial cushion, particularly as the wind was gathering strength and shifting round by 45% meaning that in the second half it would be zero-ing in on our goal. Half-time came, 3-1 but the portents were ominous. In the second half it was a totally different story. The Glenorchy Knights were stroking the ball around and carving up our midfield with great confidence while our exhausted Sea Dragons facing a hurricane had lost their first half intensity. We held out for a while until what the Germans call a Sonntag Schuss from the half way line drifted on the back of a 100km wind before bouncing and rising over goal-keeper Archie Cumpers head to get them back within a goal. It was only a matter of time before they equalized, an event delayed for a few minutes when they broke through only to strike the post but not long after they sliced through our defense to equalize from close range. The scene was now set for Brendan White Dog, their six foot three, fourteen stone Aryan blonde superman to belt one home from fully thirty meters. Hes certainly an impressive physical specimen but we found it hard to believe that he was under fourteen. Upon investigation it turns out hes thirty two but qualified courtesy of the father son rule (his son Bum-Fluff Dog though not playing on this occasion was at least cheering him on from the side-line). White Dog wasnt finished and he lobbed one into the box from out on the right touch-, thirty five meters from goal and it was

deja vous for poor Archie as another one bounced over his head to complete the scoring at five three. To add insult to injury the wind died down completely with a few minutes remaining and once again we took the game to Glenorchy coming close when Hugh McGarry latched onto a Rowan Shelton corner only for his shot to beat the far post as well as the goal-keeper. Our man of the match Isaac for the umpteenth time in the match managed to dribble the ball into the box but on this occasion was unable to get his shot in and that was pretty much that. Great performance by the team. We played 10-15% above ourselves and as coaches, Dave and I cant really ask for more than that. Glenorchy were and are the best team in the division but the gap has narrowed somewhat and boy did we rattle their cage!! Well done team. As a footnote we enquired earlier on in the season about getting Dave Sayers on the park under the father and son rule but alas our plans were scuppered when he fell victim to a debilitating case of calf knack!! Or was it back knack?? U14 Division D Result Cygnet Sea Dragons 3-5 Glenorchy Knights (Scorers for Cygnet Isaac Beecroft 2, Christian Sayers 1).

It all came together for our u6 soccer stars, easily beating Woodbridge 8 2. Charlie Gorringe returned from his holidays with his A game, scored 5 goals and had some great runs with the ball. Abby did some great defence moves and was running well all day. William was doing great teamwork and making some nice runs. Flynn had some great defensive moves and was unlucky not to kick a goal today. Archie showed his great speed and improved his defensive style, also found time to kick a goal. Charlie Hooper had good day, using great ball control in both defence and attack, scored two goals and a couple of near misses. Margate gave our boys a better run for their money this week, but despite having to work a bit harder, they still did not have the Fear of God instilled in them! Huon's fancy footwork and sliding defence moves continue and Harry seems to be aspiring to them too. Harry is taking pleasure in setting up goals for his team mates and Rory is increasing in confidence, speeding through the pack to take the ball up to goals. It wouldn't be an U7 Green game without Benny scoring and he also had many near misses. Great to see the team being challenged and handling it well. Cygnet U7 Green 2 def Margate 0 (Benny, Rory)

What a great game this weekend boys. There were some spectacular plays, Kes sprinted half the field to make a great save in defence and Floyd did some fancy finishing off in goals including a stylish slide. Billy and Lucus, you are both really starting to get the hang of the game with some ood contributions. Matthew, good calling for the pass and working together as a team. It was a great game to watch from the sidelines, I think all parents watching really enjoyed themselves. Well done everyone. Cygnet U7 White 7 def St Aloysius Blue 1 (Floyd 5, Kes 1, Matthew 1)

Edition 8 June 1 Cygnet U/8 Green

Towards the end of this game I pondered the thought that this group of kids do not need a coach. After dominating their way to an 11-1 victory, there is not much that be criticised. Zac showed how lethal his boot is at this level, smashing 7 goals largely from distance to leave the small goal keeper with no hope. Big Ethan stood in goals first half and had one important save, but that is all he had to do. Tristan was outstanding removing the habit of boating the ball without stopping it and looking up. This game he did just what coach and his Dad have been saying (maybe they do need a coach!!). He stopped the ball and considered his options, with a number of fine runs down the flanks and passes, as well as a great goal. We went into the half 5-0 up. On the restart Kingborough caught us napping with a quick goal. The kids got back into the action after that and dominated at the scoring end. Kate was so close a number of times to score and just needs to find a bit of luck. Her play has been fantastic. Holly and Lauren were always fighting for the ball, with Holly only just missing a few tough efforts. Big Ethan returned to the field to finish off 2 goals, one showing some technique to volley a cross from Zac. Little Ethan was the midfield terror, and continues to steal ball and move the game into attack. A great game and the passing and dribbling was fantastic.

The local derby was a lopsided affair from start to finish. It started with Woodbridge a player short and the need for a volunteer from the Sea Dragons to make up a full compliment. Speaking of compliments, Archie Hooper is to be congratulated for his conduct in volunteering to play for the Whalers. Today marked the 5th outing for our team half of whom have not played soccer before this year. What struck me today are not only the embryonic skills that have developed in such a short time dribbling, passing, headers, but the dog with a bone tenacity displayed. Vince Lombardi the famous American gridiron coach once remarked:Winning isnt everything, but wanting to win is And this team exemplifies this ethos. Well done kids. Edition 8 June 1 Cygnet U/9 Green

The U9 Greens played West Hobart at Cygnet in a nail-biting match against a very good side. The team really played up the strong opposition with everyone putting in a great game. All parts of team got a good work out with the defence and goalies continually on the move and the forwards getting some great breaks. The game got off to a furious start with plenty of attacks from either side. Tim kept the defence under control, with Demi in first half, and foiled several attacks. Coby put in some great saves and Oscar and Liam and the forwards put in the leg work up forward. Denzels master kick shot through their defence and led to a 1-1 half time score The pace kept up in the second half with goals from with side. Oscar O scored a great one over the defence heads and Liam followed it up with another. The score line kept pretty even for most of the second half. Demi had the goalie gloves and made some fantastic saves. Oscar O worked the up field brilliantly and Liam showed off some nice skills. All in all a great game from everyone. We were unlucky to concede the couple of quick goals right at the end of the match. Cygnet U9 Green 3 lost to West Hobart 5 (Denzel, Liam, Oscar O)

Cygnet U/9 White

Cygnet U9 White took on the Taroona Blues on their home ground. The Taroona coach was accommodating as we only had 6 players so he suggested we play 6 a side to even up the play. Taroona won the toss and opted to kick away from the sun which gave us the advantage of kicking with the wind, which was gusting about and upsetting the flow of the ball. Codi quickly scored the first goal, which was then matched by Taroona. By half time Taroona managed to sneak in 2 more goals, whilst we had scored a winded Rory who got hit by friendly fire - a ball to the chest, and Elliott who misjudged the goal post location in the glare of the sun and smacked himself in the head. A pretty sombre team at half time with no substitutes to give anyone a breather along with a bit of poor sportsmanship from the opposition. The second half saw the score unchanged for the first 15 minutes before Taroona managed to sneak in 3 more goals. By this time our boys were really starting to feel zapped of energy and although they tried really hard, just couldn't quite cover the ground the same way as Taroona who had 4 subs to use at will and fresh legs. Some excellent saves in goals from Elliott and Ned and some terrific defence between Toby and Codi. Rory and Riley played solid games chasing down the ball. A great deal of ground needed to be covered during the match and we hope to be restored to full strength to make it a bit easier for next week's match. Well done boys, you deserved a much closer end result, again the numbers not reflecting the quality of play. Cygnet U9 White 1 lost to Taroona 6 (Codi 1)

U10 white were once again brilliant on Saturday. We could have had a few more goals than necessary but it was all good as we once again settled into our new style of game. Was great to see this week that the opposition could not get through our back line with any semblance of control. Goalies had it easy and that's the way it supposed to be. A really good game to watch. Well done boys. Cygnet U10 Green 3 def West Hobart 0 (Kieron 2, Jake 1)

U/10 White
In blustery conditions at the Soldiers Memorial our U10s Div 5 battled valiantly against a well organised West Hobart side. Despite playing into the wind we managed to keep West Hobart to just two goals at half-time. So things were looking promising when we began after the break with the wind at our backs. Alas we couldnt convert all our possession into any scores. Even though we won several corners, West Hobarts defence held firm. West Hobart were fortunate enough to score a third goal against the run of play late in the game. Final score 30. But great effort everyone. The Sea Dragons never say die attitude was evident for all to see. Lets hope for a better outcome next week. Cygnet U10 White 0 lost to West Hobart 3

U/12 Sea Dragons

I guess we don't like early starts, as I was really hoping for a win this week (playing at home) and after such a spirited performance last week. Unluckily, before we knew it, we were trailing two goals down without really doing anything wrong. What happened, a few missed tackles and a few players were half asleep..? I can't mention the refereeing decisions as that would be disrespectful and send out the wrong message to my team of players... But we all thought it was offside for the first goal, didn't we..? Anyhow, as I tell my team regularly, you take it on the chin or wherever it hit's you and get on with it. We tried to turn the game and get at them, upping our work rate then just before half time our positive approach play allowed Kai to pull one back to make it 1 - 2 going into the break. Come on Sea Dragons..! I have to hold my hands up and say I fully regret not refereeing the second half, from now on I'll always ref my half of the match.

Edition 8 June 1
Again, this is not a rant or teaching my team to disagree or argue with the referee... sometimes that's just football. All I can sincerely say is that the team and I felt hard done by with a few of the decisions that had already gone, but in the spirit of the game we played out the remainder of the match even though several of our team had been spoken to by our referee for our feisty defensive work. Anyhow, just as I thought we were turning the corner and clawing our way back to a draw (or the hoped for win), we were hit on the counter (although again I felt it was an offside) then it was my turn to accept the wrath of the referee for my forthright communication and his woeful decision... It's hard when the team are holding a great line defensively and an opposing player gets behind the line unnoticed. Alas, now it was 3 - 1. I think a few heads dropped (including my own) and we didn't have enough in the tank to launch another comeback offensive. Everybody ran their socks off but it wasn't to be. The game fizzled out proving we still need to do more work in training to shore up the defence and bridge our goal scoring efforts. So onwards and upwards... Not a great game, but we were spoiled last week and we must continue to dig deep and turn around our misfortunes. As my football coaches used to say to me many moons ago "You make your own luck."
