Last May 18th, officers and members of the Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit led by President Kevin Laragan and the Interact Club of Holy Spirit National High School led by President Lovely Rose Paalisbo conferred with RC Holy Spirit Peace President Marcia Salvador about two forthcoming projects for the community. 1) Brigada Eskwela, annual school preopening maintenance activities for Holy Spirit National High School and Dona Juana Elementary School, on May 20-25; and 2) the yearly anti-rabies dog & cat vaccination project on May 25th to protect the Barangay Holy Spirit community from the fatal effects of animal bites.

Former out-of-school students receive their high school certificates after having completed the Alternative Learning System program supported by RC Holy Spirit members
Seventeen (17) students of the Alternative Learning Institute supported by RC Holy Spirit graduated last May 19, 2013, after having passed the DepEd accreditation tests. Fifteen (15) graduates passed the Accreditation and Equivalency Exam for High School while two (2) passed the Philippine Educational Placement Test for Grade VI. They constitute the second batch of graduates of the Alternative Learning System (ALS). These graduates, aged 17-38, started the ladderized, modular, non-formal education program of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) in June 2012. They were school drop-outs and most had already started working or had been working before they enrolled in the ALS program. They attended Saturday classes under the tutelage of Holy Spirit Secretary and SNG Chair JR Delgra and other volunteer teachers. Ten (10) out of the 17 graduates have been granted scholarships by PP Linda Palattao for 2-year computer courses at her school, Elite Business School of Science and Trade, starting in school year 2013-14 Also, the 17 graduates were gifted with a quartz watch each by PN Willy Fabroa. It was an auspicious celebration for the graduates, their parents and teachers.

The Alternative Learning System (ALS) for out-of-school persons has been an element of the broad Literacy Program of the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit
In RY 2012-13, the Literacy Program of Holy Spirit included ALS and the following projects and activities:
Weekly reading & arts program with feeding for 40 pre-school youths in Payatas, sponsored by PP Linda Palattao with support from Rotarians and Rotaractors Weekly mentoring by Interactors for their schoolmates who are having difficulty in certain school subjects like math and science; objective is to help them improve their school performance and grades. Sponsored scholarships for high school graduates Full scholarship for 4-year college course for one Interactor, courtesy of Pres Marcia Five 2-year vocational course scholarships, courtesy of PP Linda Palattao Turnover of volumes of books & encyclopedia solicited by RC Holy Spirit: directly by the club to Holy Spirit National High, Dona Juana SPED Center, and Judge Belmonte High, and through partner clubs RC Loyola Heights and RC New Manila South Sponsorship of lectures by experts for 80 to 120 teachers of Holy Spirit National High Donation of school supplies and bags for poor pupils in Payatas Reading, dramatization & feeding sessions to commemorate occasions like Araw ng Pagbasa, Rotaract week, birthday etc

Sixty severely malnourished Grade I pupils gained 354.8 kgs, or average of 5.9 kgs each child, after 80-day feeding program of Holy Spirit
After 80 days with fresh milk and bread, the 60 then severely undernourished Grade I pupils of Dona Juana Elementary School have gained weights, with a few actually doubling their weights by the end of the feeding program in the middle of March. Fresh milk during the second half of the program consisted of DVF brand carabaos milk provided by Cong. Winnie Castelo. RCHS program director PP Beth Sy coordinated closely with teacher-in-charge Ms Lorna Corre and volunteer parent Ms Cathy Gay throughout the project.

RC Holy Spirit is on Rotary Showcase of RI


Seven among the various service projects launched by the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit District 3780 since the start of RY 2012-13 have been posted on the Rotary Showcase of Rotary International. RC Holy Spirit D3780 with the Rotaract & Interact Clubs of Holy Spirit organized the 2nd annual youth forum on Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDS Prevention last October 28, 2012 in cooperation with the Philippine Red Cross QC Chapter. The outcome desired from the forum is to help achieve ZERO new incidence of substance abuse and HIV/AIDS affliction among the youth in Quezon City. RCs Camp Aguinaldo, Loyola Heights, New Manila East, Pagasa, SFDM, and Timog co-hosted this years forum. Hope is shared with baby and parents when RC Holy Spirit D3780 launched HOLY SPIRIT SMILES Project last August 14, 2012. Ten children from poor families are expected to benefit from free surgical operation in two years.

RC Holy Spirit D3780 responded quickly to help alleviate hunger among 200 flood victims sheltered at the Bagong Silangan Elementary School evacuation center last August 8, 2012, one day after the deluge.

Weekly learning-feeding program motivates interest to learn and consequently raises literacy of 40 young children. Program for RY 2012-13 was rolled out in early August in Payatas, Quezon City by Rotarians and Rotaractors of RC Holy Spirit D3780.

Oriental medical relief and dental mission organized and sponsored by RC Holy Spirit D3780 served 323 patients from urban poor families last July 18, 2012.

To help build international peace and understanding, PE Dr. Eui Bong Jung, OMD, and RC Holy Spirit D3780 hosted the educational-cultural visit in the Philippines of eleven Korean college students last July 16-20, 2012.

RC Holy Spirit, Interact and Rotaract Clubs of Holy Spirit D3780 helped two adopted schools with combined student population of nearly 12,000 prepare for the opening of 2012 classes last May 21-28, 2012.

Rotary clubs around the globe have many things in common, including a commitment to service. All year long, clubs are taking action to make a difference in their communities. Heres a roundup of recent club activities.
Great Britain In August, the Rotary Club of Ellon, Scotland, and the Ythan Cycle Club hosted their third annual Ellon Pedal Car Race. (A pedal car is a four-wheeled, one-person bike.) The closedroad race around a half-mile course drew pedal-car cyclists from Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Perth.
