STUDIO 4

An investigation into commercial concepts in identity and branding with a focus on design for print with digital elements. Position Statement Throughout my third year I want to focus on branding and identity with an on going investigation into a variety of briefs from corporate to independent identities. The re-written briefs and my statement of intent will highlight that I will have a range of research/concept/skills based briefs as I think this year it is important to try to improve in all areas of my design set. My main focus is to become confident in my skills. I am also interested in exploring info graphics and type design as I think this is something I would find a challenge but will aid in my projects. Something else that is paramount in my development is further industry experience and networking as I want to work in a studio when I leave. While being at university I think there is an element of momentum that I could lose when I leave so its important to me to make the transition between here and work as soon as possible. I am mainly focused on moving to London so over the next few months internships/placements and studio visits are high on my rationale.

Title and Brief Summary include a short rationale for each brief identifying why you chose it, what was the focus of the brief and how long you spent on it. Design Context Retro(per)spective A retrospective look back at what has inspired my design throughout the last three years. Interviews conducted with other professional creatives allowed for me to gain an insight into what inspires them allowing me to gain another perspective of the creative process. I wanted to work to the brief and create a publication that I would want to buy. Not only did the subject matter inspire and influence my practice up to this point, but it includes information than will be forever relevant to everyday practice. This makes the relevance of the publication continuous. This was an on going process due to the gathering of information both primary and secondary sources. This brief was a great opportunity to experiment with book binding and book making, along with editorial design. It was a great contrast to the fine art year book as it was not professionally printed. This also allowed more control with the design process. BRIEF 1

Giving typography greater exposure to raise awareness. As part of a larger tour of typography. Creating a range of promotional collateral for the event. The branding and identity is used to promote the event and reinforce the brand across both digital and printed medium for professional and student audience. The conceptual focus branched from the logo, which was formed from the corner of a gallery to communicate that the exhibition travel to multiple venues. The logo also creates a speech-like shape which adds to the concept evidencing the disscussions, talks and seminars that also take place during the tour. This brief resulted in a lot of information research as this wasnt a live brief it meant that I had to gather all of the subject information to ensure that the brand and event worked in sync with the branded and actually resulted in a considered and legitimate brief. 6 weeks.

BRIEF 2

Fine art yearbook required a professional yearbook to exhibit their third years work, evidence their individual identity and promote their end of year show. As a group we worked together as a group of 5, collaborating to ensure that Aristotles theory of credibility was ever present in the final outcome. As well as completing the publication on time to be professionally printed this helped me improve my time management skills within a group and professional practice. I have also extended the brief alone and have designed the flyers and posters on my own to also be professionally produced for their end of year shows. 2 days designing with client feedback meetings + ongoing project management

With regards to their digital presence I have designed their website which has been sent to the client for feedback and may also be used for further promotion. 1day This brief has allowed me to work on a wide array of skills including: typography, layout, editorial, file management, group work, time management. 8 weeks BRIEF 3 Sophie Curtis, a fine art student at LCA required a range of identity across both printed and digital collateral. The conceptual focus within this brief drew from a requirement that her work was ever changing and should therefore be reflected in her logo, inspired by ellipsis() in text. Given the impression that there is more to come adding suspense. 4 weeks This challenged me on working with a client that was less organised that all Ive worked with previously, but helped me gain experience in creating a relevant range for a challenging client. Dolce Gusto YCN Kickstart required an outcome that targeted the dolce gusto coffee machine range to young home makers. This was a corporate brief, with restricted brand guidelines, which was something that was not present in the other briefs. The conceptual focus of this brief was based around the use of social media to promote not only a product and brand but also a lifestyle. This idea was influenced from my dissertation which looked at what branding is and how it relates to consumerism. 2 weeks

BRIEF 4

BRIEF 5

LCA prospectus pitch was driven by the conceptual focus cannot be defined, the use of pixels, a visual representation of something, indeed undefined was applied across a range. 1 week

BRIEF 6

Graphic Design Yearbook Pitch was conceptual built on how the course offers a 360 degree, evidencing full spectrum, from this we received the fine art yearbook. This pitch was chosen as it allowed us to work at a fast pace on a group pitch improving communication and collaborations. 1 week
