10:00 BMP Staff Meeting II. Some Explanations(1) Flexibility and Feedback: Ill explain the details of most of the schedule during orientation. My job is to guarantee that everyone is happy with their learning and time in the beis medrash, while at the same time maximizing our potential influence on the camp and campers. Hopefully, youll see over the summer that I will try very hard to get a consensus from the guys before any decisions are made. Nevertheless, the fact that we are part of the larger camp means that we will all have to be a little flexible. The timing for meals is often beyond my control and we might reschedule chaburahs to an earlier part of the afternoon depending on the circumstances. Nothing will cut out of morning and night seder hours and you should always have enough time in the afternoon to make a seder for yourself. (2) Leaving Camp: My assumption is that everyone will be in camp during seder and chaburah times. Youre, of course, free to do whatever you want during the breaks. Well have one or two official BMP trips over the summer, and theyll be no official seder on visiting day. If anyone needs to leave camp for a day or more, please let me know as far ahead of time as you can. We should know at the beginning of each week what the exact schedule for the week will be. Its obviously preferable that you plan leaving camp on the days when we dont have chaburahs. On Shabbos, we play a particularly important role in camp. The BMP helps create a certain tone in the dining room, and the tishes in the Beis Medrash help the campers enjoy something in the BM even thought it doesnt involve learning. Those who are interested are encouraged to participate in the informal educational programs which take place shabbos afternoonmore details in camp. Please plan on being in camp every shabbos especially the first and last. If you need to leavelet me know ahead of time. (3) Iyun Shiur: Everyone is strongly encouraged to stick to the Beis Medrashs limmud, at least for morning seder. R Sobolofsky will be giving shiur to all non waiters on : . While the limmud will requiring some skipping, it will focus on the first two of the masechta. You are encouraged to bring a ",', and ' ". Because most of the waiters are post-high school seniors and the limmud involves a lot of skipping, the waiter/staff shiur will learn the 7th of dealing primarily with . I will be giving the regular shiur to this group and will ask Rabbi Sobolofsky and Rabbi Willig to give sporadic shiurim on the sugyas over the course of the summer. Anyone learning in the morning can pick up at night with an older BMP chavrusa or choose to learn other parts of at night. There will be a night seder chaburah, given by Ari Schwab, covering earlier perakim in . (4) Special Shiurim: We will try over the summer to take advantage of the stellar chinuch staff in the camp. There will be periodic sichos mussar and vaadim in addition to optional chabruahs on topics of interest. A weekly discussion on Inyanei chinuch should help those giving chaburahs improve their teaching and discuss general issues relating to going into chinuch as a career and having a successful, proper hashpaah on the campers. In addition, last summer we tried to bring in a few different guest over the course of the summer. If you know any Rebbeim who plan

on being in the NY / Camp Area over the summer who you think we should invite to BMP, please let me know. (5) Older Ilanot and Alufim Chaburahs: These chaburahs are a basic part of the program. Youll be given a group of 4 or 5 post 8 th or post 9th graders to learn with. The main goal of the chaburah is to develop a relationship with the guys through the context of learning but extending beyond the Beis Medrash as well. In the Beis Medrash, your learning should be directed towards sharing your excitement and enthusiasm for torah with them. Everyone is encouraged to spend quality time with guys in their chaburah during meal times, breaks, late at night or during shabbosim. The more they see you as a normal real person outside the Beis Medrash, the better they will be able to respect and learn from you in the Beis Medrash. Chaburahs take place for around 45 minutes up to four days a week. The exact days of the week we will have them will change dependant on the camp schedule. The chaburahs might be supplemented with some random shiurim in the BM or activities outside the BM (like BBQs or a 3 on 3 tournament). Even though the primary goal of the chaburahs is developing a relationship with them and providing role models for them, you must remember that youre still trying to teach them something. Chaburahs are replacing a 45 shiur slot that these guys used to have- out of an hour and a half of total learning per day (okay- maybe thats not so little for them). You task is to try to establish a tone of serious learning during chaburah time. Well talk more about how to do that in camp, but a large part of it has to do with your preparation. The better prepared you are and know the points you want to make and how you want to make them, the better chance you stand at not being distracted by their attempts to just hoc (and all of them will try hard). Based on feedback over the past few summers, this summer we are working to develop a basic curriculum for the chaburahs. You will be provided with materials, mekoros and guided questions to use with your chaburah. With the help of the group developing the material, your job will be to tailor the ideas to the interests of your particular chaburah. We hope to give you a framework to work with, while still leaving room for you to add your own personality and creativity to the chaburahs. If you would like to be involved in the process of developing the curriculum, please contact to me. (youll need to be around YU in June) We will spend a serious amount of time during orientation discussing basic teaching techniques and some creative ways to approach topics youre interested in teaching. Everyone will have an opportunity to give a shortened model chaburah which will serve as our basis for critique and discussion, Over the course of the summer, there will be ample resources through which you can discuss what has/nt been working and how you can improve. (7) Night Shiurim: Optional series of night shiurim may be offered, particularly geared to the pre-Israel chevra. Last year, Rabbi Avraham Willig gave a weekly parsha shiur, which will probably continue. (8) Post lights out Chaburahs: well talk about during orientation. (9) Tutoring: Some tutoring opportunities will be available for those who are interested. Preference will be given to older members of the BMP and anyone who has particular financial concerns (i.e. their parents wont be happy unless they make a certain amount of money during the summer). NOTHING IS GUARANTEED. I wont know how many kids asked for tutoring until I get a list in orientation. It will be your responsibility to keep track of the hours and the camp bills parents at the end of the summer.
