A Fijian girl living in Australia has been selected as one of the New South Wales state finalist for this year's Miss World Australia pageant. Veniana Natekuru who was scouted by the Miss World Organisation for Miss World Australia last year in December told the reporter she was surprised and never imagined that she would be part of such a big pageant. I took up the offer because I wanted to challenge myself in a way that while I'm learning from this experience I am also helping those who are less fortunate than I am, Natekuru said. The Ra lady said she was a bit skeptical about accepting the offer since she is still a full time University student doing two degrees however she was able to motivate herself that she would be able to do it. Some of the things I like to highlight during the pageant is to organise my outreach program for the rural Aboriginal communities. Seeing how they live their lives and how the Australian Government is helping to aid in better health awareness in their community as well as the promotion
of better literacy skills program for indigenous students. I will also be helping the Variety Children First, (a charity for sick children in Australia) with their upcoming red carpet event, which is also one of Miss World Australia's partner Charity. Natekuru said for those aspiring to be part of similar pageant should Put God first and believe in yourself. That's the only thing that drives me to do better than yesterday. There will be a fair amount of criticism and negativity but don't let that blind you from archiving your goals. As a colored young woman competing in a country which I have come to call home, that is what comes with the package. You'll just have to learn to turn whatever negativity that comes your way into something positive. And that is what I am doing right now. At the end of the day, what you accomplish in life determines you for who you are. Natekuru also hopes to return to Fiji one day to open up a business and support young girls wishing to enter nursing schools.
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimaramas visit to China this week highlights the strengthening of close ties between the two countries, and recognises the rising importance of Fiji as a regional leader in the Pacific. The Prime Minister left for Beijing and is scheduled to hold meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang. The visit to Beijing at the invitation of the Chinese leadership precedes a state visit to Moscow next month
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, with the AttorneyGeneral, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum
for a meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin. These meetings, along with Fijis current leadership of the Melanesian Spearhead Group, the G77 and the International Sugar Organisation, underline Fijis robust foreign policy, aligned with other Pacific island nations, focusing on new opportunities beyond its traditional regional partners. He returns this weekend to chair a meeting of the International Sugar Organisation next week in Nadi.
PHARMACIES nationwide have been warned against selling expired medicines which may compromise consumers' health and safety. The warning follows complaints received at the consumer council's Lautoka office. One consumer purchased a bottle of 125mg of Amoxil on May 12 worth $9.95 for his three-month-old baby; the medicine had expired in February. Council CEO Premila Kumar said despite recent efforts to implement stronger laws and regulations in the pharmaceutical sector, some pharmacists continued to engage in bad practices. Mrs Kumar said the complainant was lucky to have had the foresight to read the expiry date before giving the expired medicine to his baby. "While the pharmacy had provided replacement medicine, refunded the cost of the expired Amoxil and compensated travel costs, there is no excuse for pharmacies to be selling expired medicines," Mrs Kumar said.
Approval has been given by the Attorney-General and Minister for Public Enterprises for a bonus payout for Airports Fiji Limited staff. This has been confirmed by the chairman of Airports Fiji, Faiz Khan. The bonus would be for the financial year ending December 31, 2010. In a letter to Mr Khan, Mr SayedKhaiyum stated: Following
She said the council was concerned that despite widespread publicity on its report Prices and Practices: Pharmaceutical Survey 2010 and consequent action by policymakers to update and strengthen laws and regulations, there continued to be noncompliance in the sector. "It appears consumers continue to face potential risks in the pharmaceutical sector. In this case the medication was still on the shelf although it expired three months ago. "The council urges the Fiji Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Services to take stronger enforcement and monitoring action to curb such bad and dangerous practices." Mrs Kumar reminded pharmacies and pharmacists that there was absolutely no room for any laxity because people's lives were at stake. "Consumers are also advised to check the expiry dates on medication to avoid any mishap." Health Ministry spokesman Shalvin Deo said the ministry would issue a statement on the matter.
consultations with the Prime Minister, approval is hereby granted for the bonus payout in the sum of $377,734. This will be divided and paid to those eligible. Mr Khan stressed their workforce is an important stakeholder. I am glad that we can continue to build strong two way alliances, he said.

An employee of the Ministry of Sugar has been caught spreading false information to discredit the good work made by the Government in the sugar industry. This was confirmed by the Permanent Secretary for Sugar, LieutenantColonel Manasa Vaniqi. Lieutenant-Colonel Vaniqi said: The sad thing is the worker was telling people that all the good work done in the Ministry of Sugar was that of the Fiji Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry. This is serious, especially when the employee knows of all the positive developments the Government has done for the Fiji Sugar Corporation. Lieutenant-Colonel Vaniqi confirmed the Ministry does not like to be engaged in politics, as past politicians had politicised the sugar industry simply for their personal benefit. He is looking into the matter, but he could not say what action the Ministry would take. FRUITS OF FAIRTRADE INITIATIVE Last week, Prime Minister Commodore
Voreqe Bainimarama handed pension cheques to 380 people over the age of 70 under the Rarawai/Penang Cane Producers Association. The suspect was quick to claim that this was not a Government initiative. In presenting the cheques the Prime Minister said: This money comes from a fund set up under the Fairtrade initiative. This initiative was allowed and supported by my Government and in conjunction with the Fiji Sugar Corporation and Tate and Lyle. Today we see one of the results of this collaboration. Lieutenant-Colonel Vaniqi said the National Farmers Union, an arm of the Fiji Labour Party, had been against the Fairtrade initiative. But now that the farmers were benefiting, it had tried to claim that this was their initiative, he said. Lieutenant-Colonel Vaniqi said some workers in the Ministry were supporters of the political party. He has urged them to be apolitical when carrying out their works. The sugar industry is now apolitical and there is no room for politicians.

Government has commended the efforts of the Ramakrishna Mission Fiji and the Swami Vivekananda College for encouraging literacy development after they distributed library books and toys to 32 primary schools, kindergartens at the Nadi Council Library this month. The function for this event was held at the Swami Vivekananda College where the Ministry of Educations Western Officer Mr Albert Wise officiated on behalf of government. I sincerely thank the Ramakrishna Mission for the kind donation to the
Ministry of Education. For schools who will be beneficiaries of the donation, the books that you are receiving today must be fully utilized and not left to collect dust on the shelves, said Mr Wise. This development was possible through the Literacy Project which was founded by the Ramakrishna Mission Fiji and designed to promote literacy in the country. The Project which was launched in 2011 will see library books and encyclopedias distributed to 26 primary and secondary schools, 5 kindergartens and a vocational center.

The first of the four Air Pacific Boeing 737 aircraft repainted in the new Fiji Airways livery, arrived back in the country. The repainted Boeing 737-800 has already resumed services as per its normal schedule. Air Pacific acting chief executive, Aubrey Swift, last week had announced a second Boeing 737 aircraft will return from being repainted and refreshed early next month. Rebranding June will surely be a happening month for Air Pacific as they are also expected to officially become Fiji Airways after eighteen months of preparations. Mr Swift indicated this as a defining moment in the airlines history. The date for the June rebranding is yet to be confirmed, however, it is believed to be held either in mid-June or later in June. Also in early June, Air Pacific will give its biggest market, Sydney, a sneak peek of the Fiji Airways A330 Airbus.
Meanwhile, Air Pacifics fleet has now increased with the addition of two Airbus A330 with the last Airbus A330
due in November. The national airline is then expected to retire its Boeing 747-400 fleet.

Fiji can conduct democratic elections in 2014 and manage things on its own, says French ambassador to Fiji Gilles Montagnier. If they will request for assistance during elections then we will be able to send observers but they have not so we will not interfere, Montagnier said. They are also not a third world country so they are capable of doings on their own, he said. Meanwhile Montagnier visited the French vessel, le de R, at the Port of Suva to inspect the vessel. The le de R which is currently in Fiji is preparing to roll-out the 837km fibre optic submarine cable system that is intended to help increase Tonga's broadband internet access. The cable is intended to help increase Tongas broadband internet access and affordability, as well as to give them access to the Southern Cross Cable, the main trans-Pacific system that connects Fiji, Australia and New Zealand to the United States of America. A new home owner in the Western Division praised the determination by Government to improve lives of ordinary Fijians by providing new homes. For Nadi farmer, Arvind Singh, a new home will mean better life for his family. This after the head of government, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama opened the familys new home at Votualevu in Nadi after requesting government for housing assistance. "I want to thank you, Prime Minister, for thinking of us and never forgetting about our problems," Mr Singh said.
"My family will have a better life because of this new home, especially for my children. PM Bainimarama opened the new home at the farming settlement and urged the community to work closely with each other. The head of government also opened several other homes that have been fully funded by Government. The new homes are part of Governments commitment to assisting those individuals and families whose homes were fully destroyed during Tropical Cyclone Evan late last year.
MEMBERS of the public will soon have access to reading materials that was given to the government from New Zealand last week. National Archives and Library Services permanent secretary Sharon Smith-Johns received a gift of $20,000 worth of books by Ms Jill Bess, a New Zealand public librarian. "It is an extremely generous offer from an individual to be able to give Fiji all these books," Ms Smith-Johns said. "We know through library services how much these books will be appreciated out there in the rural areas and outer
islands." "This is one of the main aims of government to raise literacy levels for our people and we want to make books like these available to every Fijian citizen, especially in rural areas." Ms Smith-Johns said the 8000 library books sent by Ms Bess were a result of contributions by libraries and publishers like Geckos Press, Random House New Zealand and the United Book Distributors. "This is Ms Bess' second donation consignment to Fiji. The first one was last year for the Suva City Library."
A WOMAN who threatened to kill her sister was sentenced by the Magistrates Court in Suva. Lavenia Vugona was sentenced to two months imprisonment and handed a two-month suspended term which would run concurrent to each other. She was also issued a restraining order. Vugona appeared before Magistrate Alipate Mataitini charged with theft and absconding bail. The court heard she threatened to kill her sister with a cane knife after she was confronted for stealing. She only dropped the knife when she heard her sister's children crying. Mr Mataitini issued a domestic restraining order against her and told not to enter her sister's home.
Sister Jailed
Vugona, who waived her right to counsel, pleaded not guilty to theft but admitted the latter charge. The court, however, found her guilty of both charges and imposed two-month terms for each charge, with one of them suspended, and ordered they be served concurrently. The 32-year-old woman had said in mitigation she still lived with her parents and was unemployed. The court heard she had sought forgiveness but her sister was not present in court on that day. It further heard Vugona has four sisters and a brother, and although they were all married and had moved out of their parents' house, their children still lived with her and her parents.

A 53-year-old truck driver from Labasa has been jailed for eight years by the High Court in Labasa for rape. The court heard that Mohammed Ibrahim and the victim had an agreement that she would provide sexual services for him in return for gifts of money, which he had to pay into her bank account or give her cash when meeting. The court then heard that on the day in which they met they had a dispute over whether to eat the food he had brought first and then sex, or to have sex then eat however the victim wanted to eat first but he insisted that they have sex immediately and then raped her after she pleaded with him not to. The court also heard that the man is
divorced, has 3 adult children and he cares for his 75 year old mother who lives in Nadi. The man pleaded with the court for leniency considering that this was "date rape" and happened within a commercial sexual relationship. In handing down his sentence Justice Paul Madigan said there is an element of breach of trust and a commercial agreement for sexual services having been made between them does not allow the driver an absolute and unconditional right to have sex at any time. Every sex worker has the right to say no or in this case not now, Justice Madigan said. The man will be eligible for parole after six years.
The Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority (FRCA) and the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) will issue a joint identity card effective July, 2013. The announcement was made by chairman of both institutions Ajith Kodagoda. Kodagoda said the joint ID card has been primarily designed for convenience to benefit taxpayers and FNPF members. The card will ease current requirements needed for most financial and legal transactions that include the demand for TIN letters and FNPF Membership cards. From July, all you need to produce is this card, he said. Kodagoda said that an added major advantage is that the card can be issued by both organisations. The Fiji public can obtain this card from either FNPF or FRCA, instead of the current practice where we have to visit both FNPF and FRCA. FRCA will phase out the issuing of TIN letters. TIN letters are primary source document that is a prerequisite required by the banks, the Land Transport Authority or Water Authority of Fiji. FNPF will eventually phase out its current cards and it will soon issue this card for new members, Kodagoda added. FRCA and FNPF will have a joint
database, which will only contain the information required by both parties for the issue of the identity card. FNPF has already identified 200,000 members who also have tax identification numbers. FRCA has over 700,000 taxpayers in its database. And the database would only be accessed by authorised persons of both organisations. Such arrangements are already being done in countries such as Singapore where the SingPass or national identity card is being used to access their pension fund as well as tax services, Kodagoda said. In the United States, they use the Social Security Number as their national ID for all services while in New Zealand, the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) number is used to access online Kiwi Saver (pension fund) services. The project will be implemented in phases and will be piloted with a selected target groups. It is envisaged that the card will be used as a smart card similar to ATM cards. I would like to assure taxpayers and FNPF members that both organizations will continue to pursue value-adding products and services that will ultimately benefit our members," he concluded.
The People's Democratic Party (PDP) has become the fourth party to register under the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Decree for the 2014 Fiji elections. The party was successfully registered by the Registrar of Political Parties Mohammed Saneem. Saneem said that after the irregularities in the party's membership list were discounted, he was satisfied that the party's application met the minimum requirements of the Decree. As of today, the PDP will be able to operate, function, represent and hold itself out to be a political party, he said. The PDP applied for registration with 6,808 member signatures, 539 of which were discounted as anomalies. Total remaining, 6,269. The party now has thirty days to
submit to the Registrar a written declaration giving details of all assets and expenditure including, all contributions, donations or pledges of contributions or donations, whether in cash or in kind, made or to be made to the initial assets of the political party. Party officials and party candidates will also have to disclose personal incomes, assets, business connections, directorships, gifts, and liabilities. Former FLP member and Minister for Commerce and Industry in the multiparty cabinet in 2006, Adi Sivia Qoro is leading the party as its president while former cabinet minister Poseci Bune has been listed as its secretary. National Federation Party, Fiji Labour Party and the Social Democratic Liberal Party were successfully registered under the Decree earlier this month.

Mistakes made with the relocation of the Banaban people to Rabi in Fiji must never be repeated, Pacific climate change and relocation experts heard in the Cook Islands. Kiribati delegate Penilesi Alofa said the Banaban people had undergone a traumatic experience and two relocations immediately after World War II. The Banaban people were moved to camps by the Japanese during the war some to Kosrae in the Marshall Islands, others to Tarawa in Kiribati and in 1945 they were moved to Rabi, Ms Alofa said. They were not consulted the British just moved them to somewhere colder and wetter than Banabans home of Ocean Island. No other community should have to undergo this kind of experience. Alofa was speaking at the Nansen Initiative-Secretariat Pacific Regional Consultation on Human Mobility, natural Disasters and Climate Change being held in the Cook Islands. Alofa said the Banabans had been weakened during their forced labour in Japanese camps and the quick move to Rabi dramatically affected their health. Stories are told of people dying every

BY the end of this year, the European Union will have committed $136million in direct assistance to sugarcane farmers in the country. This was highlighted by the head of operations for the EU delegation for the Pacific, Renato Mele, while closing the International Workshop on Nobilisation of Erianthus in Nadi. Mr Mele said reforms to the EU's sugar protocol and removal of guaranteed quota and stable price had serious repercussions to farmers and the local industry. In addition to this, he said the EU also had limitations in delivering further assistance because of the application of Article 96 of the Cotonou agreement, following political issues in 2009. "Nonetheless, since 2006, the EU has managed to provide direct assistance to sugarcane farmers, focusing on activities that would deliver useful impacts for reducing poverty of the most affected," he said. Mr Mele said the assistance was made to relevant institutions, growers and their dependents and channeled through non-governmental organisations and regional and international bodies. One of the biggest beneficiaries has been the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF). "An important share of this assistance is aimed at supporting research, which we consider a major factor that may contribute to the rebound of the sugar industry. "The EU's direct support to the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji will reach a total of $11.5million by the end of 2013." Perhaps the biggest benefit to SRIF was the funding provided by the EU that saw the research centre relocated from Lautoka City to Drasa. "This was for the research centre

to become closer to the fields and experimental trials. "From 2011 to 2013, the EU granted additional funding to the institute, to pursue applied research in breeding, and to find ways to promote its financial sustainability as an independent research agency. Mr Mele said the significant reduction in cane production in recent times was also an area being addressed by EU funded programs. "From 341,000 tonnes in 2000, Fiji's sugar production has fallen to 167,000 tonnes in 2012. "The future of the Fijian sugar industry is heavily dependent on the introduction of new high-yield varieties and diseasefree planting material at farm level. "A specific component of the program was prepared to develop a seed multiplication system in Fiji so that by 2016, sufficient quantities of improved and certified varieties can be replanted with a target of 4000 hectares per year." SRIF CEO Jai Gawander said the institute was fortunate to have considerable support from the EU. "We have to acknowledge their support in terms of programs, infrastructure and training," Mr Gawander said. "As testimony to the EU's support, we now have a lot of young sugarcane researchers that have been sent for training and will also be contributing research papers at international forums this year." The aid given by the EU to Fiji is part of a 1.25billion Euro ($F2.97b) package for 18 African Caribbean Pacific sugar-producing countries affected by reforms to the sugar protocol. This assistance is additional to the EU's Accompanying Measures for the Sugar Protocol program which is currently in progress in the country.

Former Post Fiji executives Peni Mau and Dhirendra Patel were acquitted by the High Court in Suva. The two who were found not guilty by assessors were facing abuse of office and extortion charges. In handing down his judgment Justice Prabaharan Kumararatnam said he has no reason to disagree with the
assessors decision and therefore both Mau and Pratap will be acquitted. It was alleged that Mau in 2006 approved the payment of $5,400 to Pratap without the authority of the Post Fiji board. Mau was represented by lawyer Barbara Malimali while Pratap was represented Mehboo Raza.

Government has managed to create 5571 jobs in the Northern Division through a Look North Policy rural project This is the Northern Development Programme (NDP) which has funded 1582 projects since January 1, 2008. They included agriculture and fishing. Project manager, Waisale Tuidama said until the end of last year, they had spent $9.8 million. He said the spin-offs had been great. In terms of employment, the programme has created 5571 employment to rural areas. The NDP has provided livelihoods to 27,855 people of Vanua Levu. It is to help recipients set up businesses in villages, settlements, and outer islands. He said majority of the dalo farming were in Taveuni, Bua, and fishing in Udu, Macuata Coast, Bua and Cakaudrove. Another new project is bee farming. Government has identified depressed rural economic zone where Government and NDP will promote small scale businesses for income generation projects. It will create about eight per cent employment in Vanua Levu. The program is meeting its objectives of providing employment, providing livelihood and promoting small businesses in the North. Our main focus now is on import substitution like rice, livestock and poultry. NDP is trying to promote fish processing, poultry for supply of eggs and meat (chicken) this year. He said people had benefitted from the programme through improvements of their lives and living conditions.

Vodafone Fiji is working on ensuring its dealers in the North maximise service opportunities for customers. Vodafone dealers started a three-day workshop at the North Pole conference room with frontline trainer Usaia Tukana. The workshop is aimed to help Vodafone dealers improve their interactions with customers and to have the same knowledge of information that Vodafone has of the product they sell, Mr Tukana said. The main focus on this training is on prepaid service. The training gave participants the opportunity to improve on their critical
skills and dealing with customers on solving their problems rather than going to a Vodafone outlet. It also helped participants who were struggling to find that middle ground between being too aggressive and too passive, and how to counter problems on mobiles, said Mr Tukana. Mr Tukana added that the participants would learn about the products they sold, and how to handle problems on mobile phones. At the end of the training, the participants will be given certificates, he said. The participants were dealers from Courts Fiji, Vodafone and Morris Hedstrom.

An unexpected fire broke out Monday morning on an old shipping vessel at the Government Shipyard in Walu Bay, Suva. The National Fire Authority prevented the fire from spreading. The authority confirmed that they received the fire emergency call at 9.46am and immediately responded. Upon arrival at 9.55am firefighters saw thick smoke and flames coming out of the partly dismantled vessel which was berthed at the Government Shipyard. Firefighters were able to fully extinguish the fire and stopped the fire from spreading to nearby vessels also berthed at the Government Shipyard. Authority chief executive officer John OConnor, who was also at the site,
expressed his concern on this ship fire incident. Such fires are a threat to the nearby vessels and also to the environment because of the oil and flammable liquid contained in the ship, Mr OConnor said. The ship was being dismantled for scrap metal, he said. Mr OConnor is urging vessel owners to ensure they have proper work permit systems in place to carry out welding in such confined spaces. Employees undertaking welding works must be properly trained and they must recognise the risks associated in welding in confined spaces, he said. The authority is currently investigating the exact cause of the fire.

Accountants from around the country will converge at the Sheraton Fiji Resort from June 7 to June 9 for the 41st Fiji Institute of Accountants Congress. The theme for this years congress is The Challenge of Change. President of the Fiji Institute of Accountants, Cama Raimuria, stressed the need to embrace changes given the initiatives currently under way. Fiji will soon be having a new constitution. New company laws are about to be introduce and many other changes affecting the business community are happening, he said. Any business in todays fast-moving environment that is looking for the pace of change to slow is likely to be sorely disappointed. In fact, businesses should embrace change. Change is important for any organization because, without change, businesses would likely lose their competitive edge, he said. Westpac, Vodafone sponsorship Westpac Banking Corporation, with their partners, Vodafone Fiji, handed over their sponsorship cheque of $75,000 for the annual congress. The much-anticipated annual congress is well-attended by influential policymakers, business professionals, executives and members of the Fiji Institute of Accountants. Westpac Fiji general manager, Adrian Hughes, said: The congress provides a platform for dynamic and interesting presentations and discussions. This would assist decision-makers and business professionals plus it also provides an opportunity for relationship building within the corporate and business sector. Meanwhile, Vodafone Fiji financial controller, Elenoa Biukoto, stressed accountants today face far greater challenge to maintain their relevance. The accounting profession is not just about compliance with regulations and
historical reporting, she said. They are rather a proactive profession seeking out opportunities for growth, improvement and relevance. Mr Raimuria noted the sponsorship for this years event is by far the biggest ever to be received by the Institute in its 41 years of existence. That clearly demonstrates the Congress is of high value and still maintains its status as Fijis premier business forum, he said. Speakers Mr Raimuria said this years congress has an interesting line-up of speakers to deliver on a mix of business and economic issues. We also have an equally good line-up of panelists to deliberate on some key issues, he said. Line-up of speakers Devadas Krishnadas The founder of Future Moves, Singapore and South East Asias first business foresight consultancy will deliver the keynote address on The challenge of Change. One of the four teenagers who was involved in a car accident in Laucala Beach last Friday night remains in critical condition, a source told the reporter. The accident claimed the life of a 39-year-old Brisbane woman. The dead Brisbane woman was travelling with four teenagers; two aged 14, and two aged 15 at the time of the accident. The Brisbane woman was born in Fiji and had moved to Australia 12 years ago. She had just arrived last Thursday with her teenage daughter to visit family members. Friends and colleagues of Mount Isa youth worker Sereana Pratap held a memorial ceremony to celebrate her life in Queensland, Australia. More than 50 people attended the
ceremony, including former colleagues from her time with Young People Ahead and most recently the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services. According to the North West Star, Pastor Keith Christie led the ceremony where a balloon release was organised as a memorial. People were invited to release a balloon with a message. Pratap, 39, described as "the most beautiful spirit" died when the vehicle she was driving was hit by another car driven by a 26-year-old female. She was pronounced dead upon arrival at the CWM hospital while four teenage passengers, including a family member were admitted and discharged after treatment. The deceased was the wife of outgoing Mount Isa City Council chief executive Bhan Pratap.

THE new cane payment has not only brought delight to farmers but also high anticipation for more land leases for sugarcane farming, says Department of Lands director Mosese Tagicakibau. Mr Tagicakibau, who is in Vanua Levu for public consultation, said more people would be interested in sugarcane farming because of the new payment. "We expect a lot of interested people to visit us for land leases because of sugarcane farming and this is a good sign as land will be put to good use," he said. "We have seen that most people have occupied government lands without our concern for instance, lessees migrating overseas and leaving the land behind to relatives and friends to look after it for them. This is against the lease condition and we want people to take heed of this sort of practice to avoid penalties. Afghan Police Killed After Inviting Defectors Into Checkpoint For Dinner
Suspected Taliban militants killed seven police in southern Afghanistan after persuading the officers to invite them into their checkpoint for dinner. A total of 14 Afghan police and soldiers have died over the last two days as Taliban insurgents increase attacks as part of their annual "spring offensive" launched last month. The two attackers fled the police checkpoint after shooting the seven men in the province of Kandahar, a hotbed of the militant campaign that targets Afghan security forces and officials as well as US-led foreign forces. "Two men asked police to let them spend the night in their post. The police accepted and gave them food," Jawed Faisal, spokesman for the Kandahar provincial governor, said. "After dinner, the men grabbed the guns of the policemen and shot dead seven police and wounded one and fled." Ghorzang Afridi, a Kandahar police spokesman, said that the men escaped in a police jeep with several stolen weapons. "These men used to be police themselves but had abandoned their jobs, and at the post they said they wanted to join the police again," he said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. On Monday night, five Afghan soldiers were killed in the northern province of Badakhshan in a militant assault, the ministry of defence said, while two other soldiers were killed in an explosion in Kandahar on Tuesday. The national police and army are taking over the fight against the insurgents ahead of the withdrawal of 100,000 NATO combat troops by the end of next year, but concerns have been raised over their ability to impose security. Casualties among Afghan security forces have risen sharply in recent years as international coalition troops have begun to pull back and local personnel have taken over front-line duties.

A newborn baby has been rescued after being flushed down a toilet in a Chinese apartment building, according to state media reports. Residents in Jinhua, in the wealthy coastal province of Zhejiang, alerted firefighters after hearing the two-dayold baby crying in the fourth-floor squat lavatory. Attempts to pull him out failed, so rescuers sawed away a section of the pipe with the baby inside and took him to a local hospital. Firefighters and doctors spent nearly an hour taking the pipe apart piece by piece with pliers and saws, before the newborn was freed with its placenta still attached. From the time he was found until when he was taken out, the baby was stuck in the pipe for at least two hours. The 2.3 kilogram boy suffered cuts to his face and limbs and is now in a stable condition. Social media users vent fury at perpetrators The news triggered hundreds of thousands of comments on China's hugely popular social media site Weibo, with users expressing good wishes for the baby and fury at those who presumably abandoned him. The five-ton flag was displayed in Clinceni, 35 kilometers southeast of Bucharest. Workers struggled to keep it firmly planted on the ground because of windy conditions and had to use small sandbags. Prime Minister Victor Ponta and other ministers visited the flag later.

A FIRE broke out aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship early Monday, forcing the more than 2,000 guests aboard to gather at assembly areas while it was extinguished, the cruise line said. A former public servant has been sentenced to 12 months jail for falsifying urine samples for workers at mine sites in WA's North West. Michelle Leanne Marsden, 41, was working for Pathwest in Tom Price last year when she substituted the urine samples of three men to ensure they would get a job or maintain their employment. The original samples provided by two of the men tested positive to amphetamines. Marsden also provided a clean urine sample for a friend so he could comply with a Family Court order. She was charged after an investigation by the Corruption and Crime Commission which included an undercover officer offering her $500 cash to swap a contaminated sample. District Court Judge Andrew Stavrianou said the offences were serious because of the harm that could be caused by drug-affected people operating machinery in the mining industry. Marsden pleaded guilty in the District Court in Perth to five charges of corruption. She will have to serve six months before she can be released. The company said the fire broke out at 2:50am (1750 AEST Monday) in a mooring area on the third deck of the Grandeur of the Seas as it was enroute to Coco Bay, Bahamas. The blaze was put out two hours later. "All 2224 guests and 796 crew have been accounted for, and there have been no injuries of guests or crew reported," the cruise line said. "In an abundance of caution, the captain deemed it necessary to muster all guests at their assembly stations," it said. Two guests were treated for fainting, it said on its Twitter account. The ship has been diverted to Freeport, Bahamas, for further evaluation but the ship's power, propulsion and communications systems functioned without interruption, Royal Caribbean said. The Grandeur of the Seas departed from Baltimore on May 24 on a weeklong voyage to Coco Bay and Nassau, Bahamas. The fire was the latest in a series of mishaps to hit the cruise ship industry. In February, thousands were stranded for days on a Carnival Cruise Lines ship in the Gulf of Mexico without power or toilets after an engine room fire knocked out power.

A Vancouver man has been sentenced to 17 months in prison for abusing several cats and a mouse that he filmed on video, in what the BC SPCA says is one of the worst animal cruelty cases theyve ever come across. Jordan Lucas, 29, was sentenced Wednesday in Vancouver after pleading guilty. He was also given a two-year ban on owning any animals. The animal abuse first came to light when Mr. Lucas sold a television to an individual over Craigslist, according to Crown spokesperson Samantha Hulme. Ms. Hulme said the television included an SD card, used to record video, which featured footage of a person abusing a cat and a mouse. The individual contacted the BC SPCA, which subsequently came into possession of more videos of Mr. Lucas abusing cats. Ms. Hulme said the cats were thrown against furniture, burned and sprayed in the face with a chemical. She could not confirm whether the animals were killed. The individual who bought the TV was able to identify Mr. Lucas to police as the person in the video, Ms. Hulme added. She said the videos were made from January to February, 2012. The Crown and the defence had made a joint submission for a 17-month sentence. Ms. Hulme said the Crown
A couple living near Onoway, Alta., received an awful surprise when they returned home to find their dog was missing and a chilling note left behind. The RCMP was advised that a huskycollie cross had been tied up on a leash in the yard of a rural property northwest of Edmonton. When the owners came home, the dog was missing and on the front door was a typed note: "Smile... you are being watched because you have to be careful. Big Brother is on you!!!" Cpl. Colette Zazulak of the RCMP said the owners have no idea who might have swiped their dog. Investigators spoke with some neighbours, but they didn't see anything suspicious. "When a dog gets tied up and goes missing with a note, of course we're really concerned," Zazulak said.
was content that the judge issued the sentence it was seeking. Mr. Lucas was also sentenced to 17 months for an unrelated robbery charge, as well as receiving jail time for several lesser charges. The sentences will be served concurrently and, owing to time already served, will amount to seven months. Lorie Chortyk, the general manager of community relations with the BC SPCA, said her organization was pleased with the sentence but concerned that Mr. Lucas was only given a twoyear ban on owning animals. Its one of the highest jail sentences weve received in an animal cruelty case, but were disturbed with the twoyear ban on owning animals because we felt that, given the brutality of the actions, we would have liked to see a lifetime ban, she said, adding that the abuse was some of the worst SPCA constables had ever seen. In one case, the torture went on for hours and hours of a little kitten, she said. It was one of the most sickening cases. The BC SPCA said it carries out about 6,000 animal cruelty investigations every year. Ms. Chortyk said constables only investigate cases that are reported and that far more cases of animal abuse likely occur.
"There's a lot more to it than just my dog was running around the yard and when I came home it was gone."
The Canada Post Group of Companies reported a profit of $51 million before tax for the first quarter of the year, boosted by the sale of its mail sorting plant in downtown Vancouver in January. The sale of the property gave the federal Crown corporation a $109-million gain before taxes. A year earlier, the group had a pre-tax loss of $73 million in the first quarter. Without the property sale, company said it would have lost $58 million
for the three-month period this year including a $41-million loss at the core Canada Post segment. The company said Wednesday that it expects to report a full-year loss for 2013. Canada Post has been grappling with a persistent drop in many forms of mail as a result of newer technologies such as electronic mail and online banking. Besides Canada Post, the group includes the Purolator courier service and other subsidiaries.

A 24-Hour Queen: Judges Typo Forces Miss Universe Canada Winner To Give Back Her Crown
I tell Denise Garrido that it is OK to be bitter. In fact, I urge her to be just a little bit bitter, because I would be bitter, and because being bitter, because feeling angry, because getting fall down drunk and busting some furniture and shouting at the moon that life isnt fair would all fall within the realm of completely understandable reactions given her present situation. Given that, last Saturday night, at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in Toronto, with scores of family and friends and complete strangers looking on, Ms. Garrido experienced something that she describes as perfect bliss. When they announced that I was the winner that I was actually going to be Miss Universe Canada it is something that I had always wanted ever since I was a little girl. It truly was a dream-come-true moment. I was so happy. Happy to don her glittering crown, happy to slip on the Miss Universe Canada sash, happy to receive a bouquet of flowers and accept congratulations from her fellow competitors before collapsing into her hotel room bed after a night of celebrating her win. The 26-year-old ballroom dancing aficionado, who has a second-degree Sunday. It started out on a positive note, Ms. Garrido says. Then they told me there had been a miscalculation, that the wrong winner had been found and that the runner-up was the actual winner. Then they asked the aspiring doctor from Bradford, Ont., to hand back her crown. And her Miss Universe Canada sash. And all because of a glitch, all because some Miss Universe Canada judge screwed up when inputting the handwritten scorecards for the gowns and bikinis and skill testing question components of the three day competition into a computer, a mistake that, upon remedy, knocked Ms. Garrido from top spot to 3rd runnerup ending her Ms. Universe Canada reign after 23 hours. It was shattering, she tells me, over her cars speakerphone, while driving from her parents home in Bradford to Toronto. I was sad. I was disappointed. And I was embarrassed, really embarrassed, because everyone back home had been celebrating. Getting over my own ego has been the hardest thing. But being angry would not have changed this situation. I guess not.
Denise Garrido, who was Miss Universe Canada for 24 hours before a miscalculation was spotted and a new winner crowned, poses for a portrait in Toronto, Ontario black belt in Taekwondo and is sequined-glow of her beauty queen a classically trained pianist to boot glory. was still happy the next morning I still couldnt believe it, she says. after waking up to spend the day And then the unbelievable happened: filming Miss Universe Canada 2013 event organizers called Ms. Garrido promotional spots and basking in the into an urgent meeting at 10 p.m.

Surjit Badesha and Malkit Sidhu appear in B.C. Supreme Court in January 2012 for orchestrating the brutal killing of Ms. Sidhus daughter Jassi more than a decade ago after she married a man the family didnt approve of. Two months before she was abducted and murdered in a so-called honour killing in India, a young British Columbia woman walked into the suburban Vancouver RCMP detachment near her home with a plea for help. Jaswinder Jassi Sidhu walked out of the Ridge Meadows detachment about 45 minutes later with the telephone number for the Indian consulate, although police had received repeated calls in the past from her and others about her situation. She advised me that she had concerns for the safety of her husband, who was in India, and she also mentioned that she felt there was some harm that was going to come to him, Corporal Andy Cook testified on Wednesday at the extradition hearing of Ms. Sidhus mother and uncle. Cpl. Cook took a statement from the 25-year-old woman, who told him she had married against the wishes of her family. On June 8, 2000, Ms. Sidhus body was found in a canal near a village in Punjab, where she had gone to reunite with her husband after fleeing her family home. Her mother, Malkit Kaur Sidhu, and her uncle, Surjit Singh Badesha, face extradition to India to face charges of conspiracy to commit murder. Although others have testified of the increasing fear Ms. Sidhu felt for her own life after her family discovered her secret marriage, Cpl. Cook did not say she mentioned concerns for her own safety. Friends have testified that Ms. Sidhu had been in contact with police repeatedly, and ultimately had an officer escort her to the family home to pack her things and leave. Earlier this month, a woman who rented the basement suite from the family testified that she called police several times to report domestic disturbances upstairs at the home. But Cpl. Cook said Ms. Sidhu told him her uncle had gone to India. Based on our conversation, I was able to determine that the complaint she had was the alleged action taking place in India, Cpl. Cook said. I was unfamiliar with what to do. I had four

When Anna, a warden at a hostel in made a class five student drink urine as a cure for bedwetting 10 days ago, she invited national outrage. Her 'solution' was no different from a mother would put out her son's wet sheets on display at the window for all to see. Landon would run home every day in a frantic bid to remove the sheets before his classmates could spot them. Punishing a bed wetter is the most common mistake parents make, says pediatric nephrologist. It's not a lack of effort on part of the child that causes him to bed wet. There are a number of factors at work that are beyond his control. The bladder needs to learn to contain the urine while the child is asleep. Just as you cannot teach someone language in a day, you can't teach the child how to control his bladder in a night. While most children are believed to achieve bladder control by the age of five, 20 per cent kids continue to bed wet even until they are 10 years old. Less than 10 per cent carry the behaviour into their teens. It gets problematic not because it is a medical problem, but due to the embarrassment associated with it. Also known as primary nocturnal enuresis, bedwetting has been linked to a variety of factors, including: Genetics: Most children who wet their bed have at least one parent with a similar history. Miscommunication between bladder and brain: Most children learn to respond to that click in the brain even when asleep when their bladder is full. If your child has an 'accident', remember it's not his fault. If it becomes a regular occurrence, try figuring if there is any new stress that has entered his life. Bladder is functionally untrained: It is unable to recognise the amount of urine it could be holding. As a result, as soon as it receives intake from the kidneys, it feels full and loosens to eject urine. Anxiety at play: Often, kids who are stressed about their studies or are bullied at school tend to bed wet. Sometimes, the birth of a sibling is also a reason. When the older child senses being left out, he might withdraw into a shell, and end up seeking attention from his parents. Bedwetting could be a part of this process. Dealing with it Have you ever heard of a young, adult
Parents who scream at their kids for bedwetting end up prolonging the condition. Patience and love is all it takes to make it a 'dry night'

man or woman wetting the bed? "No, right? Parents need to understand that bedwetting does not last a lifetime. All you need to do is equip yourself so that you handle it correctly. Here's how: Don't scold, it will make things worse: Landon is said to have continued to wet his bed till he was 14. Clearly, his mother's public humiliation didn't work. Shouting at your child will not make it stop. It might cause him to slip into depression, and even lose his appetite. Six months ago, a psychologist Seema encountered an 11-year-old student of class five, whose mother would smack him each time he woke up on a soggy mattress. The boy was obese, and his mother thought he was being lazy, refusing to wake up to pee. When I analysed the case, I realised it was his social phobia, inferiority complex and a fear of facing his peers at school, that was leading to wet nights, said Seema. Teased with the moniker 'motu', he had grown into a recluse, and was seeking an outlet to express his anxiety. Seema started with play therapy, asking him to pick up toys and assign them varied roles. He connected with one of the heavy toys, and began narrating his own story and feelings through it. It took over four months for us to assure him that it was okay for him to express his inner self. Gradually, his bedwetting decreased. Use a reward programme or star chart: Prepare a chart for the week and stick it on your refrigerator. Ask your kid to mark each day with a star sticker if he's had a 'dry' night. Let him achieve a target of at least, one star per week. Continue it for two or three weeks and revise the target to more than one star. Reward your child with something he likes each time he meets the expectation. Own up to it: If you are travelling and staying at a hotel or vacationing with friends, don't be embarrassed to share the fact with them. It's not a medical problem. Carrying a waterproof overlay to throw over a mattress is a great idea. Strap on a funky watch: Several shopping portals retail vibrating watches that kids can wear to bed. It's a great way to remind your child to void at fixed intervals (for eg, every two hours). It features an auto restart countdown mode that vibrates for 20 seconds at the interval you choose.

Scientists have shown that a lifestyle that encourages a healthy heart could also shield patients with chronic kidney diseases from kidney failure and premature death, says a study. The findings suggest that patients with kidney diseases should be encouraged to improve their heart's health. Poor kidney health puts people at risk of developing heart problems. But it's unclear whether the opposite is true. Does heart health also affect kidney health? To investigate this, Paul Muntner, a researcher from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and
colleagues used the American Heart Association's recently published tool (Life's Simple 7) that helps individuals assess their heart health. Life's Simple 7 lists seven domains including not smoking, being physically active, following a heart healthy diet, having a normal weight, and maintaining low blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. "Scores on the Life's Simple 7 tool have been associated with risk for having a heart attack but it was unclear whether a worse profile would be associated with an increased risk for developing kidney failure," said Muntner.
Children who develop Type 2 diabetes are at high risk to develop heart, kidney and eye problems faster and at a higher rate than people who acquire Type 2 diabetes as adults, a new study has found. "Once these kids have Type 2 diabetes, they seem to be at very high risk for early complications when compared to adults," Jane Lynch, M.D., professor of pediatric endocrinology in the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, said. The study, led in San Antonio by UT Medicine pediatricians, includes 699 children and young people, with 44 San Antonio participants. The rise in youth obesity rates has been accompanied by increasing Type 2 diabetes rates in young people. "It's really a public health issue," Dr. Lynch, who is principal investigator in the San Antonio arm of the study, said. There are many unanswered questions and few guidelines for treatment of youth with early onset Type 2 diabetes, she said. Type 2 diabetes should not be confused with Type 1 diabetes, formerly called
Kids With Type 2 Diabetes At Greater Risk Of Developing Heart, Kidney Problems
juvenile diabetes. Of the participants from the national TODAY diabetes study, more than a third required medication for hypertension or kidney disease 3.9 years after they had joined the study. In the study, 699 adolescents were randomized into three groups that received metformin, metformin plus rosiglitazone, or metformin plus intensive lifestyle intervention. While the children on the combined drugs did the best of the three groups, Dr. Lynch said, all did poorly. The researchers were particularly disappointed that the intensive lifestyle intervention group did not do better. The rate of deterioration of beta cell function in youth was almost four times higher than in adults, researchers found, noting a 20-35 percent decline in beta cell function per year on average, compared to 7-11 percent for adults. Beta cells store and release insulin. It does not make things easier that these adolescents with early onset T2 diabetes have a tough time managing complex health problems.
A new study shows that potatoes are one of the best nutritional values in the produce aisle, providing one of the better nutritional values per penny than most other raw vegetables and delivering one of the most affordable source of potassium of the more frequently consumed vegetables, second only to beans. Dr. Adam Drewnowski and colleagues from the University of Washington used a combination of nutrient profiling methods and national food prices data to create an "affordability index," which was then used to examine the nutrients per unit cost of 98 individual vegetables as well as five vegetable subgroups including dark green, orange/red, starchy, legumes (beans and peas) and "other" vegetables. The results indicated while dark green vegetables had the highest nutrient density scores, after accounting for cost, starchy vegetables (including potatoes) and beans provided better nutritional value for the money. Potatoes, in particular, provide one of the lowest cost options for four key nutrients including potassium, fiber,
vitamin C and magnesium. Among the most frequently consumed vegetables, potatoes and beans were the lowest-cost sources of potassium and fiber-nutrients of concern, as identified by the 2010 USDA Dietary Guidelines. "The ability to identify affordable, nutrient dense vegetables is important to families focused on stretching their food dollar as well as government policy makers looking to balance nutrition and economics for food programs such as the school lunch program and WIC," lead researcher Adam Drewnowski, PhD said. "And, when it comes to affordable nutrition, it's hard to beat potatoes," he said. The study was funded by the United States Potato Board and adds to the growing database of nutrition science that supports potatoes in a healthful diet. In addition, one medium-size (5.3 ounce) skin-on potato contains just 110 calories per serving, boasts more potassium (620g) than a banana (450g), provides almost half the daily value of vitamin C (45 percent), and contains no fat, sodium or cholesterol.

Former Child Actor From 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' Debuts In Cannes As Director!
You'll never guess who this young debut director at the French Riviera is... Remember that cute kid who played Preity Zinta's little brother in Kal Ho Naa Ho or the chubby kid who played younger Hrithik Roshan in Mujhse Dosti Karoge? He is no longer the affable boy but has transformed into a young filmmaker. Atith Naik is currently in Cannes to showcase his short film at the festival. Atith, who started his acting career at the age of six, appeared in seven feature films and more than 160 commercials. Says the proud filmmaker, who is in his 20s, `My short film titled The Girl in the Woods is about a girl trapped in a forest and has to deal with her haunting past. It has been selected for the Cannes Short film Corner this year and I'm glad to be here. This time, there are a lot of Indian faces here for a change.` Atith is also making sure he has a sound training for his future projects. He is enrolled in Columbia College, Hollywood and is expected to graduate next year with a major in cinematography and another degree in Fine Arts. `I left India at the age of 18 to study film production in the Philippines. Later, I moved to Los Angeles to get a degree. I don't harbour any dreams to be an actor. I know my calling and I'm far more comfortable working behind the camera. I recently assisted Vince Toto on a HBO pilot series who is also mentoring me,` says Atith. He has also shot music videos for artistes like Jamie Foxx, Up and Down Under, Siddhant Shirodkar and Bassnector.

In todays time, with the Internet cutting the distance between people, actors just cannot afford to tell stories. Especially not at the worlds most prestigious film festival, from where news is bound to travel far and wide! However, no one seems to have explained this logic to the Murder actor Mallika Sherawat. Or maybe she hasnt gotten her head around the intricacies of using the net.were not sure what the truth is. Much to the annoyance of millions of desi viewers, Mallika was seen and heard boasting about her cinematic accomplishments in an interview she gave at a media booth at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival. The Hisss actor was seen telling the interviewer in an accent that was neither Indian nor American but definitely exotic, that she was the first person to kiss onscreen. The lady spoke with all her heart, obviously believing deeply in herself, saying that the 17 kisses that she shared with her costar (Himanshu Malik in Khwahish, 2003) onscreen helped champion womens causes in India. She even insisted that she was the first one wear a bikini in an Indian film! Of course, she seems to have forgotten that a far more talented actor called Devika Rani kissed her co-star and later husband Himanshu Rai several decades earlier, in a 1933 film called
Karma, the liplock lasting four minutes! And there are more than a dozen heroines who wore bikinis long before Mallika did, starting with Sharmila Tagore in 1967 (Evening in Paris), Dimple Kapadia (Bobby, 1973), Zeenat Aman (Qurbani, 1980), Aruna Irani (Bombay to Goa, 1972), Rakhee (Sharmilee, 1971), Mumtaz (Apradh, 1972), Madhrui Dixit (Mujrim, 1989) we could go on and on! This only goes to show what a regressive mindset Mallika herself has, to subvert a whole chapter in the history of Indian cinema just to appear cool and with the times, no? Ms Sherawat also went on to say that after the many kisses she did, she became a fallen woman even as she attained superstar status in India. Not entirely true, wethinks. Her choice of movies like The Myth (with Jackie Chan, 2005) and the debacle of epic proportions that was Hisss (2010) were more responsible for boring holes in her career, rather than the temporary fame her kissing scenes got her. Sure, we admit that Bollywood is not as progressive as it should be when it comes to giving leading ladies their due, but it isnt as bad as Mallika makes it out to be either. But we know that in any womens empowerment that will take place in the future, Mallikas shapely self will not aid the cause!

They've forgotten the one generation that came in-between. Hello, knock knock.... I am not going away anywhere yet. I didn't want Ranbir to be called a chip off the old block. I wanted that I should I be known as a chip off the new block. Today loads of work is coming my way. I'm at liberty to pick and choose. ` Suddenly after Agneepath there is a spate of interesting negative roles for Rishi Kapoor to play. The excited actor reveals, `I'm not interested in playing the villain as a loud caricatural uni-dimensional creature. I
can't do that. I am trying to humanize evil. If you see my character in Aurangzeb I am not trying to ACT evil. My character's thinking is evil. He is willing to go to any lengths to achieve his ambitions and greed for wealth. I try to enter the thought-processes of my grey characters. Now in Nikhil Advani's D Day I again play the bad guy. I've again humanized the character. People around my character think him evil. But he's just doing his job. ` The maverick performer had had his fill of villainous roles for now. `I'll be seen in grey roles in two more films Nikhil Advani's D day and Subhash Ghai's Kanchi. Now enough for now. I don't want my grand- daughter to grow up and see me playing too many despicable characters. Whatever I am shooting for are light but not conventional roles. In fact the only father's role I'm shooting for is in Nupur Asthana's film where I get to work with another wonderful young actor Ayushmann Khurrana. But I am not shying away from any kind of roles, negative conventional or anything else.

Back in March, we had reported that John Abraham had replaced Akshay Kumar in the sequel to Anees Bazmee's film Welcome. Now we hear that Sonakshi Sinha has been roped in for the film. If what we hear is true, Sonakshi has been paired opposite John in the film. Interestingly sometime back, John had expressed his desire to work alongside
Sonakshi. Sources close to the film, state that Sonakshi had been roped in for the role three days ago, while Kainaat Arora is expected to replace Mallika Sherawat in the film. Welcome 2 which will be helmed once again by Anees Bazmee who had directed the first part in 2007, is expected to start shooting in Dubai from June.
Who can forget Salman Khan as the most adorable Prem. If you are waiting to see the Dabangg star again as Prem then the days are not very far. Report say Salman Khan has teamed up with Sooraj Barjatya for the next. Salman has pushed back the shooting of No Entry sequel to accommodate dates for Barjatyas film. The filmmaker is keen to begin shooting by the end of the year or early next year and report is doing the round that Sallu has given them dates before he kick starts the shooting of Sajid Nadiadwalas 'Kick. Sooraj has not yet planned the script but when he approached the actor, he readily agreed. Salman even called up Boney Kapoor Boney Kapoor confirmed that he is not starting the film shooting anytime soon without citing the main reason.
Breathe Easy SRK, Akki: It's Sunny Deol Vs Sunny Leone Now
He adds, Talks are on with Salman as far as dates are concerned but I cant reveal the details. Salman shares a strong bond with Sooraj Barjatya. Sooraj ventured into direction with blockbuster, Maine Pyar Kya in 1989 with Salman Khan and Bhagyashree. The film was a box-office hit and people started to like Salman as Prem. He then stared in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) which became one of the highest grosser. The last time Salman and Sooraj worked together was Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999). Sooraj Barjatya makes family oriented film and Salman favors his choice as he too hails from a large family and believes in such themes. It would be really interesting to see Salman and Sooraj teaming up after 14 years.
While the industry is looking forward to the clash of titans at the box office this Eid - with SRK's Chennai Express and Ekta Kapoor's sequel of Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai - another film slotted for a release on the same day has quietly been shifted to a later date. Sources say that Sunny Deol's film Singh Saheb The Great was also scheduled for an early August release. However, the actor in a move that clearly shows he doesn't want to indulge in ego clashes, decided to postpone the release to October 11. It made no sense for director Anil Sharma and Sunny to hit the theatres on Eid when already two big films are fighting for theatres. While Ronnie Screwvala has already booked many screens, Ekta is also hell bent on getting her film a fair share at the box office.
Insiders say that the muscle power of an impressive cast of Shah Rukh KhanDeepika Padukone along with director Rohit Shetty and Milan Luthria directing Akshay Kumar-Imran Khan-Sonakshi Sinha could have been another reason why Anil and Sunny altered their initial plans. The source adds, `It was getting difficult for Singh Saheb to get any theatres and it was a sensible decision by Sunny to not let ego hamper the film.` `We do not wish to be involved when two films are already fighting at the box office. Our sole aim is to have the best possible release for our own project, on October 11.` It's Sunny vs Sunny! With the re-scheduling of dates, Sunny will now clash with another Sunny at the marquee. Deol's film will release alongside Sunny Leone's Ragini MMS 2 on October 11.

The actress says mainstream cinema has always had a problem positioning her. "That's why I keep running back to the more realistic cinema. It's okay to do a small role in mainstream cinema like 'Aurangzeb' or 'Yaariyan'. But it's films like Rituparno Ghosh's 'Memories Of March' and Avinash Kumar Singh's 'Listen, Amaya' that sustain me as an actress," said Deepti. She is now looking forward to the release of Shekhar Suman's "Heartless". " 'Heartless' is a rare commercial film where I have a substantial role," she added.

The JW Marriott Marquis Dubai, which opened this week, may hold the new record for the world's tallest hotel building, but there are several other hotels that have breached the 400 metre mark. All the rooms in the Ritz-Carlton in Hong Kong are to be found on floors with three-digit numbers, and offer a magnificent view of Victoria Harbour and the city's skyline from well over 400 meters up. The very highest luxury, in a twofold sense, is enjoyed by guests staying in the 415 sq. m Ritz-Carlton Suite on the 117th floor. A research by Emporis (www.emporis. com), the international provider of building data, shows that the Park Hyatt Shanghai is located on floors 79 to 93 of the Shanghai World Financial Center, the city''s tallest building at a height of 492 meters and a total 101 stories; in Shenzhen, the top 26 floors of the 442 meter tall KK100 are home to a St. Regis-Hotel. At 355 meters in height, the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai, supersedes the 22 meters shorter Rose Tower, home to the luxurious Rose Rayhaan by Rotana, as the tallest building solely used as a hotel. Both skyscrapers are located in Dubai and provide their guests with an impressive view of the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa. The Makkah Clock Royal Tower might be the world's second-tallest building, but its Fairmont Hotel only occupies the lower two-thirds of the tower. The top third consists of an enormous clock tower whose face can be seen from as far as 17 km away. A boom in skyscraper hotel construction is particularly evident in Asian cities and the future will not see a reduction in the number of sky-high hotels opening there: three of the buildings in the list were only completed in 2012, and further hotels of superlative dimension are already in the starting blocks, among them the controversial Ryugyong Hotel in Pyongyang. The 330 meter tall building, which has been under construction since 1986, will not now have the 3,000 rooms originally planned, but, in housing a Kempinski Hotel, will introduce the first western hotel chain to North Korea. The World's 10 highest hotels are: 1. The Ritz Carlton housed in International Commerce Centre, Hong Kong - 484m - 118 floors - 102-118 hotel floors 5. With the RX, Lexus found an upper hand against the German luxury car brands. Its sedans and coupes lagged those from Mercedes, BMW, and Audi--but the Lexus RX beat all those brands to market with a richly fitted tall wagon with all-weather, all-purpose appeal. To this day, the Lexus RX--in RX 350 and RX 450h hybrid editions-remains a comfortable, understated piece, with a loyal following of repeat owners and buyers not swayed by the recently arrived Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes M-Class. The RX is more practical, often less expensive, and has standout tech and entertainment features in a package that won't be seen as fiscally or environmentally irresponsible. It also has a long-established reputation for reliability and dealer service that can't be erased. They're upscale, but not ostentatious. For the first time since the current thirdgeneration RX models bowed, for 2010, they've received a light refresh. The 2013 Lexus RX models get a version of the new 'spindle grille' that's already made its debut in the GS sport sedans, which makes it just a little menacing in our opinion, while all the snub-nosed, blunt-shouldered purposefulness-crossed with soft elegance--of the current generation's design remains. LED running lamps, new rear taillights, and a few new colors are the extent of the exterior changes, while inside there's a new steering wheel, contrast stitching for the leather, and a redesigned center console. New for 2013 on front-wheel-drive models is a Sport Appearance Package that includes a unique front bumper, halogen headlamps and superchromefinished 19-inch wheels. The "indecently" dressed visitors to the 16th century Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa, a must-do on most tourists' itineraries, will now be offered shawls to cover themselves up before they enter the shrine, a priest said on Wednesday. "We had been receiving complaints that tourists were not dressing properly for the church. Many people felt offended by it. We were forced to take this step," Fr. Savio Barretto, rector of the church, said. Last year, the church authorities had put up signboards and sought help from guides to ensure that tourists were appropriately dressed when they visited the baroque-style church, endorsed by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation ( Unesco) as a world heritage site. However, the efforts did not make much difference. "Now we have volunteers

Suva coach Gurjit Singh says the weakness in the Kalayanji Pala Labasa side defence was the key for their 5-2 victory last Sunday at ANZ Stadium during the Fiji Sun GP Batteries National Football League. Labasa scored early in the first half but at half time found themselves 3-1 down. Singh was satisfied with the performance of his side. Labasa was a good side but they were not organsied I saw their weakness in their defense and I told by boys to go through their defense and that is what they did and we scored. We could have
been up early in the match but we missed a lot of opportunities, Singh said. Labasa coach Arthur Simmons said lapse of concentration allowed Suva to score against his side. We started well but after we scored but they tend out to sleep after that one goal and by the time they woke up the three goals were already in the net but we will come prepared for them in Fiji FACT. Simmons added. Labasa will face the struggling Rewa side in this weekends clash in Suva on Sunday while Suva takes on Savusavu prior to Rewa and Labasa match at 1pm.

Sestito announced the signing himself on his twitter account. Once I got my end signed and they got their end signed and it was official, I just went out and did it, Sestito chuckled over the phone from his home in Rome, N.Y. Listed at 6-5 and 228 pounds, Sestito arrived in Vancouver mid-season on waivers from Philadelphia and played his first game March 2 against the L.A. Kings. He appeared in 23 regularseason outings for the Canucks, scored once, had 11 shots on goal and collected 53 penalty minutes while averaging just 6:37 time on ice. His fight card included the Kings Jordan Nolan, the Flames Brian McGrattan (twice), the Wilds Mike Rupp and the Blues Ryan Reaves. Players like Tom Sestito are a commodity, they really are, said Canuck assistant GM Laurence Gilman, who negotiates the teams contracts. He has size, hes prepared to play a physical games and has some aptitude with the puck. We were pleasantly surprised with him. Because he is limited in his skating ability, Sestito has never had a fulltime gig in the NHL. He once scored 42 goals in junior with the OHLs Plymouth Whalers but hasnt been able to achieve anything close to that in the professional ranks. In six seasons since leaving junior, hes played in just 57 NHL games, 13 with Columbus and 21 with the Flyers. He has five career goals. Security was an issue with Sestito in his contract talks with the Canucks. I wanted to have a two-year deal and I definitely wanted the one-way, he said. Being a UFA, I imagine I would been
able to get a one-way somewhere but I definitely wanted to be in Vancouver again. I expressed that in my exit meeting and they said they wanted me back, too, so I thought it was going to get done pretty quickly. Vancouver is a great organization with great fans and they treat you well. The leadership group in that locker room is second to none. So I didnt want to go anywhere else. I honestly dont think I could have matched that up in another place. Sestito did admit he was a little apprehensive that the Canucks are without a head coach after the firing of Alain Vigneault last week. Like every other player, hell now have to gain the trust of the new man. The coaching situation is always a concern but the organization is pretty sure what Im going to bring and I think the coach, whoever it is, will appreciate what I bring, he said. Sestitos agent, Scott Norton, agreed that not knowing who will coach the Canucks could be a bit risky for his client but noted that managements desire to have him back was paramount. There is always a gamble in not knowing who the coach is and there are certain coaches, I guess, who appreciate Toms style of play more than others, Norton said. Tom was faced with the option of going to UFA this summer but he loved his time with Vancouver. The talks went pretty smoothly, They seemed happy with what he brought to the table and I think theyve publicly said they probably need a little bit more size and grit in their lineup. With the Sestito signing, the Canucks still have 11 players from the seasonending roster who stand to become free agents on July 5. The UFAs are Mason Raymond, Andrew Alberts, Max Lapierre, Derek Roy, Manny Malhotra, Andrew Ebbett, Cam Barker and Steve Pinizzotto while those in the restricted category are Chris Tanev, Dale Weise and Jordan Schroeder.

The Ba football side aims to retain the Fiji Sun GP Batteries National Football League in a bid to qualify for the 2014 Oceania Champions League. We could not achieve our dream this year as we were out of the competition at the semifinal stage but we have not lost hope and we will work hard this season in the National Football League so that we can win and be a representative of Fiji in the Champions League again, Ba manager Iliyaz
Khan said. Ba gained maximum points in the National Football League last weekend at home as they beat Coastal Rental Nadroga 2-0 and Tavua 13-2. We have a young team with the guidance of the senior players and they have done well. We have set our focus on winning the league title and the officials have full confidence in the side, he said.

But this year we have a good coach guiding us and definitely he is planning well to end the winless streak this year, the Lautoka businessman said. The current Lautoka players look promising as they walloped Rewa last weekend. The players and the coach had worked hard for the match against Rewa and they came out victors and the communication amongst the players has been a game plan by the coach Ravinesh (Kumar), Prasad said. The side has been boosted with the return of the former Ba and Suva midfielder Shameel Rao who strongly featured for the side against Rewa. Shameel Rao has reunited with the Blues after sometime and we are very fortunate to have him in our squad and his inclusion will have a big impact with Alvin Avinesh in the midfield. So we are looking forward for his services to the team, he said. On the other hand latest inclusion and Fiji under 20 left back Pranil Naidu has been ruled out of the Fiji FACT after sustaining an injury. Doctors have ruled Naidu out of football action for the six weeks which means he would not be able to take part in the Fiji FACT which is the major blow for us but we have other players who would be playing for us, he said. Prasad has assured the Blues faithful that the day of celebration is not very far away. I urge the fans to keep supporting the team and the wait has been a long for the loyal fans and this year the side is on the right track and the best players have been assembled by the association to end the wait. Prasad said. Lautoka will have a stiff mountain to climb when the tournament starts next month at ANZ Stadium in Suva when the side faces Navua in the tournament opener then plays Rewa on the second day followed by Nadi at the Prince Charles Park in Nadi.
