After a century of caring, the future still shines

rom its humble foundation back in 1910, David & Margaret Youth and Family Services in La Verne has grown leaps and bounds over the past 100 years. Looking back on their achievements over the past century, organization leaders are proud of what has been accomplished and look forward to whats still to come.

David & Margaret is well known for its residential treatment center, which offers housing for adolescent girls ages 11 to 17. The girls are placed there by county workers due to troubling home situations such as physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse or trouble with the law. Theyre all in difficult situations and come because their families are not able to give them what they need, said Charles Rich, who has served as executive director of the organization for the last 9 years. Their home situation is not the best so they get placed with us and we provide therapy to them and help them gain self-esteem and overcome their challenges so that they can see that they can make something of their lives and become something better than what theyve experienced. The organization also has a foster care program, placing children and teenagers in local homes. David & Margaret this year celebrated their first 2 adoptions that came after placements from their foster care program. Alongside its foster program is a mentoring program supported by 59 volunteer mentors who are matched with foster kids and David & Margaret residents. Our mission philosophy of care is to make sure that everyone feels unique, special, loved

and appreciated, said Therea Macalino, publicity coordinator for David & Margaret. So some of the programs have a true emphasis on making sure that they feel special because theyre not just another kid. In recent years, David & Margaret has added new services and broken new ground. Since July, they offer a new residential program where boys ages 11 to 17 can stay for up to 30 days while county workers find them more permanent housing. To support teens who will leave the campus when they turn 18, David & Margaret has worked on a transitional living program to help them get settled in the real world. That means finding apartments, job placement, school enrollment and help setting up bank accounts. If we put more into this now, these kids wont end up in prisons or mental hospitals, Mr. Rich said. And theyll be contributing to society rather than a drain on society. David & Margaret also provide services that are open to the community. They offer family counseling, a family preservation program, a learning enhancement center for children with learning disabilities and a special education school. We have a lot of kids in the community who come here who arent able to make it in the local schools, Mr. Rich said. We have smaller classrooms with all girls and thats been beneficial for a lot of kids in the community. Alongside all its successful programs, the organization has other ideas for future COURIER photos/Steven Felschundneff growth. Theyd like to offer low cost counseling, build a garden project where the David & Margaret Youth and Family Services Executive Director Charles Rich has been an employee of the La Verne institution girls can grow and use their own food, exsince 1987 when he was hired as a counselor. The home, which provides treatment services for adolescent girls, will celebrate 100 years of service to the community at a party this Friday. DAVID & MARGARET continues on the next page

pand their adoption and foster care programs and offer a substance abuse program to teens and adolescents in the community. The Womens Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church first established the original David & Margaret Home for Children in 1910 after Henry Kuns of La Verne donated an old hotel to be used for an orphanage. Fifteen years later, Mr. Kuns donated more land and an all-concrete building for the children, which today houses administration and various program offices.

By the 1960s, the organization focused its work solely on adolescent girls, as there was a growing community need for programs specific to girls. Today, the organization has 160 staff and over 200 volunteers who have donated over 2200 hours of service. Mr. Rich said the organization couldnt survive without the hard work of volunteers and donors due to limits on state funding over the past 5 to 8 years. We can see what the program needs to be successful but cant provide it because we dont have the funds, Mr. Rich said. So its been a real challenge for us. But all the hard work has paid off. Former residents of David & Margaret will check in and tell their success stories. A former resident recently earned a PhD and is now a professor, Mr. Rich said. Another one works for San Bernardino County as a social worker. Sometimes people call and tell us theyre married with 2 kids, Mr. Rich said. Or maybe theyre not married and are a single mom, but theyre making it and thats a success for these kids who so many people thought would never make it. On Friday, David & Margaret will celebrate its 100th birthday with a charity event featuring a silent auction, dinner, music and birthday cake. The event takes place at the Avalon Room at the Pomona Fairplex beginning at 6:30 p.m. The charity dinner will feature music from No Vacancy Entertainment, a treasure hunt sponsored by Mickys Jewelry Studio and 100 silent auction items donated by local businesses. If you think about all the kids and families that have been impacted over 100 years, its really overwhelming, Mr. Rich said. Think about 100 years of caring and all thats gone into that. Its just hard to imagine. I think about what weve done just this year and this has been going on for 100 years. So its really made a huge difference in peoples lives. Its amazing to see all the people willing to give of their time and their talents to help people become successful.

COURIER photo/Steven Felschundneff Eleanor Pierson, right, greets longtime friend Kathy Woodbury on Thursday at Foothill Country Day School in Claremont. The school plans to name their new fundraising golf tournament after Ms. Pierson to honor her 46 years of employment.

Pierson golf tourney to raise money for scholarships

oothill Country Day School icon Eleanor Pierson, 89, has always wanted more students to receive a well-rounded education. An upcoming golf tournament in her name may help provide that opportunity.
The inaugural Eleanor Pierson Golf Tournament will take place at the Glendora Country Club on October 18th. The tournamentwhich will raise money for classroom equipment and provide scholarship opportunities to children unable to afford a private school educationwill be the first of its kind in the 56-year history of the private school. We have always done a benefit dinner in the spring and this year were doing something in the fall, Ms. Pierson said. Especially now, in these economic times, the schools are definitely important. The legacy of Ms. Pierson Ms. Pierson was one of the founding parents of Foothill when the school opened in 1954. She became more personally involved in 1964 when Foothill founder Howell Webb hired her as a secretary. Since then, Ms. Pierson has carried out different roles at the private school, including being the schools admissions director for many years. She currently serves as the schools director of outreach. Theyve been wonderful to keep me on, Ms. Pierson said. Foothill has been my 2nd family. Its a very happy place to be. Howell Webb really wanted kids to learn and help children become motivated.

Foothill isnt the only place where Ms. Pierson has been a mainstay. According to the 89-year-old, Claremont is also a place where she has spent most of her life. Ms. Pierson originally came to Claremont when she was 2 days old. Her father owned a lemon ranch and her grandfather was at one time the business manager to former Pomona College President James Blaisdell. She attended elementary school at what is now known as Sycamore Elementary School and then moved on to what she refers to as the old Claremont High School because no junior high schools existed. Yet she eventually transferred to Girls Collegiate in Glendora, where she graduated from high school. Then the Depression hit and the school [Girls Collegiate] was moved to Claremont where they bought the property that eventually became Western Christian School, she recalled. Following her high school graduation, Ms. Pierson attended Pomona College and earned her undergraduate degree in psychology in 1941. She worked in civil service exams and as a control tower operator before marrying her late husband Lenn Pierson in 1942. The 2 moved back to Claremont where her husband founded Pierson Flying Service at Cable Airport. Ms. Pierson has now lived in Claremont for 64 years. Hall of Famer scheduled to attend Foothill recently announced that former Los Angeles Lakers Hall of Famer James Worthy will be attending the golf tournament fundraiser. Mr. Worthy played in the NBA for 12 seasons and was a 7-time

all-star and the Most Valuable Player of the 1988 NBA Finals. He is also the founder of The James Worthy Foundation in North Carolina. We are very fortunate that one of our families has him as a contact, said Silvia Luci, co-chair of the Eleanor Pierson Golf Tournament. James Worthy was very generous and even waived the appearance fee that he normally charges. His foundation is really strong in making sure that kids from underserved communities get good educational opportunities. Planning for this years tournament began back in April. While the Betty Webb Organization normally holds an annual fundraiser to raise money to enhance education for current Foothill students, Ms. Luci hopes the establishment of the Eleanor Pierson Scholarship fund will allow the school to reach more students. The beauty of it is that it accomplishes 2 things, Ms. Luci said. We can raise money for things like SMART boards in the classroom and also help one or 2 students a year attend our school who otherwise wouldnt have been able to. It should be an exciting day. The tournament kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with registration taking place at 8:30. A helicopter drop will take place at 4 p.m. before the benefit dinner and silent auction. For more information, including package prices, contact Michele Shafia at 626-5681, x120.

A tribute and a challenge

by Joseph M. Lyons, MS, PhD

t its September meeting, the Inland Valley Chapter of Death Penalty Focus accepted, with profound respect and gratitude, the resignation of its founder and chair, Constance Waddell.
Ms. Waddell is known throughout the community as the smiling face of hope for numerous causes that address social inequities, and as an advocate and volunteer serving the needy in our community, most notably through her efforts with Hope Partners. She and her husband, Don, are residents of Pilgrim Place, and are active members of Claremont United Methodist Church. Death Penalty Focus is a nationwide grassroots organization that has, for over 20 years, worked to abolish the death penalty in those states, including California, that still sentence to death those convicted of crimes ranging from drug trafficking to treason, and from sexual assault of a child to murder with aggravating circumstances. In this effort, DPF calls for personal reflection and public discourse on the well publicized inequities, injustices and burdensome economic and social costs associated with capital punishment; and, more importantly, whether these profound defects are consistent with our understanding of equal justice for all and our personal beliefs regarding the inherent worth and dignity of every human being. When our criminal justice system fails to reflect our personal standards of right and wrong, and punishment in keeping with those standards; when our criminal justice system fails to reflect the shared conviction of our religious leaders that the death penalty

view point
is a fundamental violation of the sanctity of human life; when our criminal justice system ignores the opinion of legal scholars who once justified its use but now explicitly state that the death penalty should be unconditionally eliminated from the penal code because it distorts and corrupts our entire criminal justice system; and, most importantly, when our criminal justice system ignores the opinion of 70 percent of us who would prefer the sentence of life without the possibility of parole to the death penalty; then the efforts of good and noble people like Constance Waddell and organizations like Death Penalty Focus become more than a few voices crying in the wildernessthey become the megaphone for the still small voice that at least 70 percent of us hear when asked to consider if California should replace the death penalty with a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. As her last official act as chair, Ms. Waddell challenged those present to continue the level of advocacy that has made the Inland Valley Chapter of Death Penalty Focus one of the most effective in California at bringing attention to this issue. In this regard, she requested that our community be made aware of the World Day Against the Death Penalty: USA, which took place on Sunday, October 10, 2010. The focus of this international gathering was to focus on ways to assist efforts in the United States to replace the death penalty with an alternate sentence, such as life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

She expressed hope that this would be an opportunity to engage our family, friends and faith communities in reflection and discussion of how to transform consensus into an effective coalition for change. And with her typical grace and genuine concern for others, she closed with a prayer for Claremont resident Gloria Killian, a keynote speaker at the World Day Against the Death Penalty: USA. Ms. Killian is an internationally recognized voice for DPF, and knows first-hand the life altering impacts of a mistake made by our criminal justice system, being released from prison on August 8, 2002, after serving more than 16 years on a sentence of 32 years to life for a crime that she did not commit. Never being one to abandon a hope yet realized, Ms. Waddell will assume the role of Immediate Past Chairperson, thus remaining the face and heart of the DPF in the Inland Valley and continuing with grace and persistence to advocate for an alternative to the death penalty. The example she sets for advocacy based on respect and consideration, and the challenge to transform our community, our state and our nation into places where respect and consideration are the rule, deserves public recognition regardless of ones position on the issues. Constance Waddells hope is everyones hope that the world is a kinder, gentler and more inclusive place to live when she departs, than it was when she arrived. And it will be, because she is kindness, gentleness and in seamless relationship with everyone blessed by her presence. Until your hope becomes reality, keep hope alive Joseph M. Lyons is the newly elected chair of Inland Valley Chapter of Death Penalty Focus

The note says Congress still hasnt done anything.

A look behind the scenes

Dear Editor: Having been a slum housing litigator in a prior career, I was shocked when I first experienced the decrepit classroom that serves as the Claremont High School Theater. The ceiling had large holes and leaked. The electrical system was so faulty that plugging in a coffee pot blew out the system and posed a fire hazard. The area behind the stage was so cramped, crowded and unlit that it was a personal injury lawsuit just waiting to happen. In my days as a lawyer, if I had walked into an apartment in that condition, I would have advised the inhabitants to sue the owner. If I were a building inspector, I would cite the school district for habitability violations. Krista Elhai, the long-term, long suffering director of the theater program, works miracles in that space, producing plays and student actors of such incredible quality that they routinely win statewide competitions in which they compete against well funded private schools. In the years that I volunteered for the program, I saw shy, insecure kids blossom into confident, poised young adults as they learned the craft of acting. I saw others develop technical skills that would help them secure employment in a tough job market. I saw the annual musical productions that were so professionally produced that they left me stunned and amazed at what a group of teens could accomplish. But what touched me most of all was that the theater was an outlet for the kids who were different in some way and who werent readily accepted by their peers. For these young people, the theater program provided a safe haven and a vehicle for self-expression during their high school years, a time that otherwise could have been a hellish experience of isolation and rejection. Yet sadly, because the current theater is so small, some students are turned away from the program. For all of these reasons, I am supporting the current school bond effort, Measure CL. If passed, it will provide the matching funds to a state grant that will enable the school district to renovate the Claremont High School Theater, as well as many other worthy projects. The theater will be made habitable so that students safety is no longer at risk. It will be expanded so that no student has to be turned away from the program. It

League of Women Voters endorses CUSD Measure CL

Dear Editor: The League of Women Voters (LWV) of the Claremont Area endorses the Claremont Unified School District (CUSD) school bond Measure CL. The decision to support Measure CL was not taken lightly. Any policy the League advocates has to conform to national, state, county and local positions that the League establishes through careful study and deliberation. The League of Women Voters of California (LWVC) position on public finance supports primary state government responsibility for funding education and limited use of direct voting by the public on revenue measures. However the LWVC also supports measures that make it possible for school districts to seek new revenue locally. The Claremont Area LWV believes that the time is now for CUSD to seek local funding because of the California Legislatures repeated inability to ensure adequate and sustainable funding for our childrens education. We must take seriously the school districts assertion that if facility improvement needs are not addressed now they will only become more pressing and costly later on. Maintaining school facilities is a constant process. Many of Claremonts facilities were built 50 to 60 years ago. Measure Y was the first significant funding in many years that could be used for building upkeep. More needs to be done. Having buildings in better repair means they are safer for children and reduces the likelihood of property damage, catastrophic maintenance

costs, a degraded learning environment and liability from safety issues. The League has a position supporting student entitlement to a safe school environment conducive to learning with clean, healthy facilities that are in good repair. While half of the funds from Measure CL will go toward repairing and modernizing facilities, the remaining half goes toward 3 worthwhile uses: paying off old loans, used in part to air condition the schools in the late 1990s; investing in technology and telecommunications to help prepare our students to be competitive in a 21st century global economy; and refurbishing classrooms for energy efficiency. The savings from reduced energy costs and loan payments will be an advantage to the district for years to come and can be reinvested into the districts general fund to directly benefit students. With strict accountability and independent auditing requirements now required by law for school bonds, the League is assured that there will be proper oversight if voters approve Measure CL. Proposition 39 requires an impartial oversight committee to ensure that Measure CL funds are not misspent. We have a good opportunity to take advantage of low interest rates and lower construction costs now, saving money for the district and its residents in the long run. Cost savings, strict accountability, benefits to students and greater local control over local schools are important considerations that persuade the League of Women Voters of the Claremont Area to support Measure CL.

Jean McGill
Mary Jean McCain-McGill, a resident of Claremont from 1950 to 2004, died on October 4, 2010 at the Autumn Hills Health Care Center in Glendale. Mrs. McGill was 83. Born on December 24, 1926 in Fresno, she was adopted by John and Rose McCain. She attended Fresno State College and graduated from La Verne College. In February 1950, she married Robert George McGill, and they bought a home in Claremont shortly thereafter. For many decades, Mrs. McGill taught art and math at Lone Hill and Gladstone Junior High Schools in the Bonita Unified School District. An exceptional artist, she lent her artistry to handcrafted jewelry, clothing and a lifelong love of the camera. In high school, she served as the yearbook photographer. It was rare to see her without her camera at arms length, capturing her fam nvironments and her

pets. Mrs. McGill was also an animal lover. After retiring from teaching in 1993, she devoted herself to her grandsons, Sean and Paul. She volunteered in their classrooms and became known as Grandma Jean by staff and students. And all throughout this era, she still had her camera at the ready, happily documenting her grandsons school activities, birthday celebrations and sporting events. Also a devoted mother, Mrs. McGill provided many wonderful experiences for her son, Bob, as he was growing up. He recalled his favorite childhood memory: She bought me a saddle. My father made a stand for it where I played on it for years. Mother taught me to ride and took me riding often as a child. Along with her family, Mrs. McGill traveled the world. Starting in the late 60s, she made annual visits to England during summer breaks from teaching to visit friends and attend stitching and jewelry-making guild events and classes. In 1995, she took her family to the British Isles. They visited Ireland (where McGill family heritage could be traced to County Kerry), Scotland and, Mrs. McGills favorite, England. In 1999, she took the family to New Zealand, Tasmania, Australia and Hawaii. Mrs. McGill is survived by her son, Robert John McGill; her 2 grandsons, Sean Patrick and Paul Allan; and her brother-in-law, Roy McGill, and his wife, Gladys McGill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert McGill, in 2006. Services will take place at noon on Friday, October 15, 2010 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Claremont.

Claremont Forum: a hub for local artists, musicians and writers

he Claremont Forum, which opened in 1986, is a community center where artists can join together. With weekly activities, such as Writers Workshop, the Inland Valley Story Tellers, Japanese Classes and the Spiritual Book Study, the sole mission of the Claremont Forum is to promote individual and community well-being through education, the arts and wellness programs, according to Mr. Rick Moore, director of the forum. The Claremont Forum was first open at the Packing House before the renovation. We moved in when the Packing House was still in a disrepair state, stated Mr. Moore. Due to the buildings deconstruction, we were kicked out by the Fire Marshall and relocated near the Claremont COURIER on College Ave. We moved back to the Packing House around 4 years ago. Our book store is acting as a rental space for people who want to have events, such as banquets, lectures and music events, said Rachel McDonnell, who is the staff supervisor of the Claremont Forum. In July of this year, the Claremont Forum vacated the old bookstore. The expansion added a lot of room for the book store and the Prison Library Project. We have less room for art events, but we are searching for new ways to have them, said Ms. McDonnell. Expect great changes from the Claremont Forum, we want to become leaner and meaner! The promotion of well-being is conducted through weekly or monthly community gatherings, such as the Sunday Farmers and Artisans Market, the Prison Library Project and the Conscientious Projector.

The Prison Library Project allows prison inmates to read and learn more about the world and themselves. We want them to learn about mediation and look inside of themselves in order to make new decisions, said Mr. Moore, who has actually taught at the Chino State Prison. As of 2010, the Prison Library Project has sent more than 300,000 novels and dictionaries to prison inmates. We receive well over 200 letters a week from inmates asking us questions and requesting bibles, dictionaries and even Stephen King books, said Mr. Moore. Local volunteers from churches, high and middle schools and synagogue are nice enough to come in and help send out the books to people who actually want and need them. It allows them to get up close and personal with the cause they are volunteering for. The Conscientious Projector, which is organized and coordinated by John Forney, displays documentaries about environmental, social and/or political issues. Most of us dont have the time or chance to see these films, but they are great, because they make us think, explained Mr. Moore. The movies are supposed to touch upon social issues and social values; we have recently viewed the films Dirt, American Casino and Heart of Stone, Mr. Forney said. After the film, we usually have a professional who leads a discussion. The Conscientious Projector, which is sponsored by Progressive Christians Uniting, exhibits movies every third Wednesday of the month. Mr. Forney is on the staff of Progressive Christian Uniting.

Another event hosted by the Forum is the weekly Sunday Farmers and Artisans Market. We feel that the market adds value to the city and community, explains Mr. Moore. We bought it from Full of Life a while back, when it was being held in the parking lot of Rhino Records then it expanded to the corner of Second Street and Indian Hill. Mr. Moores vision for the Farmers Market is to expand the market further, because it is an excellent opportunity to allow the community to gather. At the Farmers Market, homemade and homegrown produce are extremely important. Seventy percent of the products are organic. Many of the vendors make their own merchandise or grow their own food. The Claremont Forum, aside from the activities it offers, is a charming bookstore where you can purchase paper and/or hardback novels cheaply. The books range from $1 to $4, depending on whether the book is a hard back or a paperback. We are always looking for donations from people who want to get rid of their books, we even give our donors receipts, if they want to use their donation as a tax write-off. The Claremont Forum is located at 586 First St. in the heart of the Packing House.

tephanie Testa-Perez began Options In-HomeCare with hopes of helping people remain in the comfort of their homes while recovering from illness or living with Alzheimers, Dementia, or with a disability. What makes this company unique is their ability to offer non-medical, live-in care for a flat fee, rather than an hourly rate, thus creating a cost-effective option for more people to remain independent. Mrs. Testa-Perez employs professional CNAs and qualified caregivers to help with personal hygiene, meal preparation, bathing, light house keeping, and transportation for errands. Over the past two years, Options In-Home-Care has developed trusting and lasting relationships with many Claremont senior living facilities and local therapy registries to provide Claremont residents with the best quality living arrangements. For more information regarding in home care please see Options In-Home-Cares business card in the service section of the paper.
