According to a recent report commissioned by the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education, University of Southampton we usually are not aware of the qualities that a good leader mainly because we are looking at the role of leadership through a narrow lens .Many academics have come into higher education because of their "passion for their subject" rather than the thought of becoming a manager . As the management of universities grows ever more complex, it is essential that the Leader needs to be innovative. A university leader needs to be an academic to gain the respect of the faculty he leads and to fully understand at the ground level the nature of the universities core intellectual functions. At the same time, a university leader needs to be an entrepreneur, able to make the bold business decisions demanded and to seize the initiative where required." With higher education being redefined in many ways, it is becoming increasingly important for universities to find multi-faceted leaders to meet the diverse challenges of a changing sector .For a Leader to be effective in the Academic field he has to manage the Lecturer staff as well as support staff, inspiring trust , demonstrating empathy and managing change in an emotionally intelligent fashion . Harnessing innovation throughout the institution is a challenge .When innovation is seen as coming only from the top it might be met with resistance but if the Academic leader listens to the others and takes innovation from wherever they find it in the Institution, it will lead to changes in the Institution. With this background the present course is envisaged with the following objectives
