Lesson Name: Multiplying and Dividing Integers Teacher: Lisa Iovino Class: Sixth grade average level students Classroom Layout: The best way to layout the classroom is to have it set up in rows. I prefer five rows, with five students in each row. Prerequisite Knowledge for students: Students must be able to tell the difference between a positive number and a negative number. Prerequisite Knowledge for the teacher: A teacher teaching this lesson must be familiar with the LCD projector and PowerPoint. Lesson Objective: The objective of this lesson is to be able to multiply and divide positive and negative numbers. Time Frame: This lesson should take approximately 55 minutes to complete. List of materials: The students will need a paper and pencil to take notes on the lesson. Content: The content of this lesson is positive and negative numbers and how to multiply and divide them. Sunshine State Standard: MAA331, MAA332, MAA333 Introduction: To teach my students about multiplying and dividing positive and negative numbers, I introduce them to the negative family. The negative family is a family that lives in negativeland and has to follow by specific rules that are in place in the land. The first rules that the negative people must follow is negative people are only allowed to do two things. They either shop or, if unable to shop they stay home and do math. The second rule that the negative people must follow is that they can only shop in groups of two. This means that if there is only one negative person, he cant shop. He must stay home and do math. If there are two negative people (negative signs in the problem), They can pair up and go shopping together. If there are three negative signs, two can shop together and the other guy has to stay home and do math (meaning the sign stays in the answer). I found this to be a silly way to get all my students to be able to multiply and divide integers. I found that before I taught multiplying and dividing integers this way, students would have a lot of trouble deciding between multiplying and dividing rules using or using the adding and subtracting rules to solve multiplying and dividing problems. Math Involved: The math involved in this lesson is basic multiplying and dividing and counting the number of negative signs in the problem.

Instructional Method: The lesson will be introduced to the students by a powerpoint presentation. Students will take notes on the lesson and then they will use a classroom laptop to open and complete the hot potatoes worksheet. Learning Approach: The lesson is mainly done by a lecture style format. Step-byStep: The teacher will go through the powerpoint step by step and do example problems with the class. Student should copy down notes on their own paper based on the powerpoint. Key Questions: What happens if you multiply a negative number by a positive number? What about if you multiply a positive number by a negative number? What happens if you multiply two negative numbers together? Two positive numbers? Closure of the lesson: The students will complete the hot potatoes worksheet on the LCD.
