Technical Plant Design Competition


THEME
CARBON CONUNDRUM : UNRAVELING THE ENIGMA Designing a plant capable of minimizing traces of carbon footprint

MISSION
To design a plant that helps to minimize the excessive emission of carbon into the air and the usage of carbon which comply the following aspects; environment, energy, economy, safety, health, and infrastructure.

DESCRIPTION
Generally, plant design can be based on ONE of the following two criteria : a. An innovation of an existing plant ; or b. A new technology on a new plant This competition is a conceptual design based, detailed calculations is not necessary The plant design should be constituted of more than one operation unit Problem should be defined in the participants researching field before proposing the solutions The problem should be an unresolved issue regarding to their researching field There is no restriction on type of plant, the scale of the plant, or the technology used in the plant design Power plant design based on green technologies such as solar energy or biomass ARE NOT allowed in this competition The submitted entry should include : a. Plant-Design Project Description b. Plant-Design Model

JUDGEMENT CRITERIA
Evaluation will be done based on the designs novelty, projects feasibility, economics value, environmental friendly, optimum natural resources used and effectiveness Creativity and innovation (on the technology or the process design) would be given credit Mark will be given to the plant-design project description, the plant design model, participants presentation and the questionnaire session upon the judges visits The entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges drawn from local industries, government and universities The judges decisions are final and no correspondence will be entertained

RULES AND REGULATIONS


The competition is designed to be in a team of MAXIMUM FOUR (4) participants Any changes on the confirmed participants list must be informed 1 week earlier before the competition date The submitted entry must be original. We value creativity and innovative proposed design in this competition, any imitation entry would directly be disqualified Entries which do not comply with any of the above competition rules will be disqualified

FORMAT
(A) PLANT-DESIGN PROJECT DESCRIPTION Language : English A 100-300 words executive summary, which consists of brief description on the research problem, proposed solution, and the process flow diagram of their plant design must be included The submitted plant design project description must NOT exceeds 15 pages (INCLUDING cover page, table of contents and references) All submissions must be 1.5 spaced) in Times New Roman font with 12-point font size. The text should be justified with all the main titles highlighted in bold. Page numbers should as well be aligned at center and presented in the form of BOLD NUMBER. The counting of page number should EXCLUDE from the cover and table of content pages References should include: author, year, title, journal title, volume (session), page number (if possible) All softcopy submissions must be converted into PDF-file format while all hardcopy submissions must be printed out in A4-size, and should adhere to the guidelines

(B) PLANT DESIGN CONSTRUCTION


The plant design must be constructed on the cardboard platform that will be provided by the host, in the dimension of 1m x 1m The participants are required to prepare and bring along their miscellaneous units models, as well as any other necessary tools/stationeries/equipment during FACES 2013 Each team will be given 1 hours to set up the prepared operation units on the provided platform after the briefing on the first day Labeling on each constructed unit operations and the flow direction must be included in the plant construction Each team will present their work in series upon the judges visits during the exhibition session for evaluation The sequence of the participating universities will be decided in a draw during the briefing on the meeting day Each team is given MAXIMUM TEN (10) minutes to present their workings and five (5) minutes for the question and answer session. However, the evaluators may take more time for the question and answer session, should they need more explanation from the team It is essential for all team members to attend their presentation slot, but it is not compulsory for all members to present their topic Penalty may be imposed to presentations that exceed time limit

PROJECT DESCRIPTION GUIDELINES The cover page of the submitted project description must consist of : Name, IC of every team members (with the name of the team leader at first) The Selected Criteria from Description Title of the Plant Design Contact Number and Email Address (Team Leader) The project content should consist of : Table of contents Executive summary Introduction (Research Background, Research Problem and Proposed Solution) Objectives (Overall and Specific objectives) Design Methodology (General process description, optimization criteria and technology used

(if theres any) Cost analysis and risk assessment (Economic, hazard and environmental considerations) Conclusions and Recommendation Brief acknowledgement or disclaimers (if theres any) The appendices must consist of : Reference list Tables and/or figures (if any) Related picture (if any)

Technical Case Study Competition


THEME
CARBON CONUNDRUM : UNRAVELING THE ENIGMA Excessive Emission of Carbon

OBJECTIVES
To raise awareness of future chemical engineers about the issue above To inspire our future chemical engineers to think and solve the issue To develop communication skills, problem solving skills and other soft skills of future chemical engineers

ELIGIBILITY

Participants must be full-time undergraduate students in a Chemical Engineering Program run by one of the participating universities/institutions

JUDGEMENT CRITERIA
The teams will be judged mainly based on the solution presentation during the competition day

RULES AND REGULATIONS


Each group is entitled to send MAXIMUM FOUR (4) participants for this competition

FORMAT
Solutions are required to be presents on the day of the event Present the solutions in power point

Technical PowerPoint Presentation Competition


THEME
CARBON CONUNDRUM : UNRAVELING THE ENIGMA Methodologies or technologies of minimizing the excessive emission of carbon

MISSION
To encourage the students to propose and present new effective techniques or methodologies that are able to reduce the emission of carbon in industry or household, which is environmentally friendly, energy and cost saving for a better future

DESCRIPTION
The presentation should include a definition of carbon (from their respective points of view), co-related issues/problems, threats that might be faced, as well as challenges and the probable solutions towards it. It is advisable to focus on the techniques to reduce the excessive emission of carbon in the industrial or household

RULES AND REGULATIONS


Each group consists of FOUR (4) participants Team will be strictly disqualified if the entry is not complying with any of the above competition rules

FORMAT
Language for slides and presentation : English Participants are required to submit the presentation slides and appendices for this competition All presentation slides must be prepared in Microsoft Office PowerPoint application only, with maximum 20 slides INCLUDING the cover page and table of content References are required as footnote in the presentation slides. However, reference list are not required in the slides All presentation slides must be submitted both in softcopy and hardcopy Each team is given FIVE (5) minutes for technical set up, MAXIMUM TEN (10) minutes to present their topics and FIVE (5) minutes for the question and answer session. However, the evaluators may take more time for the question and answer session, should they need more explanation from the team The presentation should be clear and no transparency is allowed during the presentation Penalty may be imposed to presentations that exceed time limit All team members must attend their presentation slot, but it is not compulsory for all members to present their topic Media presentation equipment will provided by the host for the presentation. The participants are required to prepare any other needed equipment by themselves

APPENDICES GUIDELINES
Contents of presentation slides are not required to be attached to the appendices

The cover page of appendices must consist of : Name, Identity Card Number, Course, Part of participants Email address (team leader) The appendices content should consist of : Reference list Bibliography Related picture

Technical Video Presentation Competition


THEME
CARBON CONUNDRUM : UNRAVELING THE ENIGMA Methodologies or technologies of minimizing the excessive emission of carbon

MISSION
To propose and present the methodologies or technologies to minimize the excessive emission of carbon

DESCRIPTION
The submitted videos must fulfill the theme FACES 2013. The video shall comprise of the values regarding the subject matter, threats that might be faced, as well as challenges and the probable solutions towards it Credits will be given to videos which have the most impact through presenting innovative ideas and critical thinking

JUDGEMENT CRITERIA
The teams will be judged mainly based on the originality, creativity and the quality of the video The videos will be evaluated by a panel of judges drawn from faculty

RULES AND REGULATIONS


The videos must be original. Once plagiarism is detected, the participation will be annulled The videos must be a team work. The members of each team MUST NOT exceed TWO (2) All team members must attend their presentation slot, but it is not compulsory for all team members to present their topic Entry which does not comply with any of the above rules will be automatically disqualified

FORMAT
All videos must use English as the medium language Length of the videos should be about 5 10 minutes Each group will be given 5 10 minutes for playing the video and 3 minutes for oral presentation on their video, while 3 minutes will be given to the judges for the questions & answers session (if any). However, the evaluators may take more time for the question & answer session, should they need more explanation from the team

VIDEO GUIDELINES
The videos must be in AVI format

TECHNICAL SPEECH COMPETITION STUDY CASE THEME CARBON AS GREEN TECHNOLOGY: Promoting and developing Green Technology as an alternative source as well as broadening the perspective towards creating a better tomorrow. MISSION To promote Green Technology as an solution to excessive emission of carbon: Developing ideas, problems and solutions from the perspective of a future engineer. To minimize the cost through the development of Green Technology DESCRIPTION The speech must fulfill the theme of FACES 2013. The speech shall reflect the writers point of view regarding the subject matter, the cause of negligence as well as minimizing the cost for future sustainability. Credits will be given to speech which includes critical thinking, innovation and recommendations of such matter. Research and critical arguments with supporting evidence will be taken into consideration. There are no limitations regarding what to talk and what not to talk. As future engineers, it is prudent for us to think beyond expectations. However, the speech must have discrete information and be clear-cut, complicated or beat-around-thebush information is unnecessary.

ELIGIBILITY Participants must be full-time students in a Chemical Engineering Program

FORMAT All speech must be in English. Speech should be about 7 15 minutes in length;
