END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION FMP

NAME Luke OBrien
1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them? My FMP has taught me a lot of different skills, the biggest and hardest thing I have learnt is that if I let things slip and dont keep on top of my work, at the begginning of the FMP I was very relaxed thinking that I have done it all before but I then had to have the harsh realisation that I was not pulling my weight. Towards the end of the project I managed to get my head on straight and pull it back together, winning pitches and working hard. The skill I have learnt is to recognise my own working patterns and play to my strengths. My FMP has also allowed me to work with a lot of different people on different project, this has been a vital skill in my design practice, being able to talk to people about work even when things have gone wrong. This aspect has been hugely positive but also hugely pressurised, some of the projects in this brief have been live and that has added an extra pressure to the proceedings, at times I felt that the pressure really took its toll on my personal life which made things very difcult but that in its self has been a skill I have now learnt. Separating my work and my personal life. The most important skill I have developed in my FMP is desicion making, I feel now that I have the condence to make choices and stick by them, in some cases those choices have needed defending but I stand by the work I have done. An example of this is blogging, I never really connected with the blog in the way that my peers did and would have much preferred an ofine documentation of my work and in this way I blogged my project once the work was done. Although this is an improper use of the blog system I felt like it gave me the much needed headspace to get the work at hand done. Another example of this skill in action was on the End of Year Show pitch. We ended up having around 10hrs left to make a concept from scratch, this quick and desicive mindset really helped to get things done at a quick pace. Overall the FMP has taught me an incredible amount to do with pressure and coping with things, but I dont think its a true reection of my time at Leeds College of Art, I think all the work I have done reects that, the FMP for me personally felt like I was just ticking boxes which I am not pleased about.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process? During the FMP as I stated earlier I have learnt to make descions quick and stick with them. Other approaches and methods I have developed I suppose is realising why my work looks the way it does, this has mainly been through the subject matter of my design context book. I have realised that I am constantly looking out for simple visual things to plug into my work, and this process of gather information then feeds into my work, but I seem to do it without noticing. Looking over all my work for the FMP it all has a certain aesthetic in which I produce very simple duotone designs unintentionally. Even my input in group work such as the prospectus has resulted in this aesthetic. 3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these? My work seems to be consitently simple in its approach and I think that is what I should capitalise on most, keep on keeping it simple. I have tried to get more hands on with the photography of my work this time, I dont think its my strength but I think its a skill I am beggining to develop. 4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future? My work is full of weaknesses, my biggest weakness in this project is my time management, and my management of my projects, I tended to focus on one project at a time and that really made life hard for my time management. I kept my time through the use of a dairy which was a big help but I often missed deadlines which I was not happy about. Overall the FMP for me was a mixed bag, I think I did some good work and I think I did some bad work. My mark will reect this I feel, that I could of handled this a lot better as a body of work, but overall I am very pleased with the work I have done and cant wait to re-shoot it for my portfolio at the end of year show.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas: (please indicate using an x) 5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor 1 2 3 4 5 Attendance x Punctuality x Motivation x Commitment x Quantity of work produced x Quality of work produced x Contribution to the group x The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
