I know that a lot of people swear by shopping at consignment shops for clothing, claiming that the best deals can be found there. I consign my childrens outgrown clothes at a local shop. I rarely find anything there to purchase because I seem to find better deals on clearance racks at department or discount stores. Just last week, I went to the consignment shop to drop off several items and they told me they had money to pay me on my account. With the money, they gave me a print out that listed the items that I consigned and the amount each item sold for. I was flabbergasted when I saw that an outfit I purchased at a discount store for $3.99 two years ago for my two-year-old daughter sold for $9. So, I walked away from the consignment shop with $4.50, actually making 51 cents on an outfit she wore for two summers! -K.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) remains focused on carrying out its mission, despite a time of significant budget uncertainty. Todays announcement is one part of the Departments efforts to strengthen the rural economy. Improving the quality of life in rural areas is one of Rural Developments primary goals, said Schermerhorn. We are making sure that homes in rural New York are safe, reliable, and energy efficient. Funding is available through Rural Developments Rural Housing Service Section 504 Loan and Grant Home Repair Program. The program offers very-low income homeowners living in eligible rural areas, loans to make general home repairs or modifications, which may improve or modernize a home. The interest rate on these loans is one percent and the maximum term is 20 years. Applicants may obtain multiple loans, with a maximum outstanding loan amount at a given time of $20,000. To be eligible for home repair loans, an applicant must have the ability to repay the loan, an acceptable credit history and an income that falls within the very-low income category for the size of their household. Grants are available to very-low income homeowners age 62 or older who cannot afford a loan. Grants are limited to a lifetime assistance of $7,500 and must be used to remove health and safety hazards or make a home more handicap accessible. To see if you meet the income and property eligibility, please visit http://eligibility.sc.egov.usda.gov/ eligibility/welcomeAction.do For more information on the Home Repair Program and other USDA Rural Development programs, please contact the New York State Office at (315) 477-6400. f

(7), Berra and Dickey (8), Nettles and Maris (9). Its also worth noting that two single-digit pinstripers are enshrined in the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown but not Monument Park in Yankee Stadium: Earle Combes (1) and Tony Lazzeri (2). Combes was a notorious racist and that, no doubt, has made it easy to forget his highcaliber statistics. Lazzeri, however, was one of the citys most popular players during his era, and when Jeters number is retired, heres hoping the Yankees do right by the man. And, of course, who could forget the legendary career of Rick Cerone (6), who for several days in the early 80s was one of Americas favorite Yankees. More Yankee lore: Mattingly was the face of Yankee baseball (no matter how much Dave Winfield protested) during the 80s and was rightfully awarded the title of captain. Along with Mattingly, Willie Randolph and Ron Guidry donned the black C on their uniform, legends who had succeeded slick fielding and timely hitting Graig Nettles in that regard. Nettles himself had succeeded Thurman Munson, who was the first Yankee captain since the passing of Lou Gehrig in 1939. Before I drown this column in numbers, back to the story ... So Mattingly and Jeter finish working out, and theyre basically the last to leave the field. A man of few words (most of the time anyway), Jeter defers to Mattingly, and as they begin to walk toward the clubhouse, legend has it, Mattingly says to Jeter, Lets run off the field ... you never know whos watching. A week before the All-Star game, Jeter sealed his own Hall of Fame and Yankee legend history by homering for his 3,000th hit. As insignificant as that story may seem, Jeter would go onto say that the moment with Mattingly coming off the field meant a lot to him. When he was named captain of the Yankees years after Mattinglys retirement, he invoked his name as someone he looked up to and respected. Last week, Mattingly returned the favor. He put himself right there with all the greats, guys like Joe D., the Mick and Babe, Mattingly told The New York Post. Hes a great person. Hes won. Hes won individual stuff, but hes won championships. Hes a great story. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter and publisher of The Kansas City Luminary. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

A SPORTING VIEW By Mark Vasto Yankee Tradition Runs Deep Don Mattingly, No. 23, and Derek Jeter, No. 2, were in the outfield shagging fly balls toward the end of another batting practice. Mattingly had watched Jeter move through the Yankee farm system and knew that he was, at least according to plans, his heir apparent. For one thing, it was kind of common knowledge that the Yankee brass was hesitant to assign most ballplayers single-digit numbers. This sounds silly, but when you consider that the Yankees are one of the few teams who refuse to stitch their players names to their jerseys, it adds significance. Many Yankee greats have worn the single digits: Billy Martin (1), Babe Ruth (3), Gehrig (4), Dimaggio (5), Mantle
Is your life like lasagna? My wife makes the best lasagna youve ever eaten. I watched her make it once. She prepares her sauce with secret ingredients that I cant tell you about or shed have to kill me. She mixes together all of these cheeses. Then she carefully layers all of these ingredients in her special lasagna dish. Its the layering that attracted my attention. She puts a layer of noodles, then sauce, then cheese. And she cooks it all together, layer upon layer, until its done. So while I smell the lasagna cooking, I listen to life. And I realize that life is somewhat like lasagna. Life layers stuff on you. Some of the stuff you ask for, you like the special ingredients. Other stuff you dont. But you do get to choose most of your lifes ingredients. And it all cooks together in your lifes pan until its done. So what ingredients are you choosing for your life? Whats cooking in your lifes pan? Listen to your life and choose positive life ingredients to cook in you.

DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS THAT LEFTOVER MEAT Cook ground turkey, chicken, or beef in a large frying pan or saucepan. Add your favorite seasoning (taco, beef stew, fajita, etc.) and then let simmer for several minutes. Cool and put cooked meat into a plastic freezer bag, laying the bag on its side to flatten before sealing. Place flattened bag onto a cookie sheet and put into freezer until frozen. Now, when you need just enough of your favorite cooked meat for tacos, stew, etc., you just snap off the required amount and put the rest back into the freezer. This is a great time-saver! -D.

While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Check out our reader ads. Whatever youre looking for, odds are you can find it in the Moneysaver! DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS GARDEN WATER I am an avid gardener and composter, but before my garden weeds go into the compost bin, I put them in a large pail of water, which I sit out in the sun for about two weeks. If I get the chance to go to the beach, I pick up some dried sea weed and put this in the water pail as well for many added nutrients. I water my outdoor container plants with the compost tea in place of store bought fertilizer.
I am also an avid water conservationist so the water that goes into the compost pail comes from my kitchen sink where I catch the water being used to wash vegetables or my hands. In the dry season, I catch all of my extra water (such as the water heating up for a shower) to water my garden. Its a lot of work, but it is exercise and a good way to conserve water. -Bonnie P. TELL YOUR FRIENDS When I need a piece of furniture or other items, I frequently put up a notice at work. People there seem to have what I need and want an easy way to get rid of it. I was given a stained sofa. I rented a steam cleaner and got the stains out in an hour. A friend sold me a nice antique cherry dresser for only $50. It has a scratch, but it is easily covered with a doily. I was also given a sewing machine. Since I am always on the lookout for a bargain, I can usually find what I need from co-workers. Incidentally, my workplace has about 120 workers. -SB

BOLIVAR - A LOCAL BOY SCOUT HONORED THIS MEMORIAL DAY, WE AGAIN HONORED OUR MANY VETERANS FROM LONG AGO AND TO THE PRESENT. Some tomb stones from so long ago are hard to read and yet others are so prominent. About a year ago, a local boy scout, Zachary Napora, came up to me after placing the flags for Memorial Day and asked me if he could redo the many names on a new ledger and to make charts so that we could have them available in years to come. Well, this was something that needed to be done and updated each and every year. He wanted to do this project for an Eagle Scout Badge, so I agreed. Well one thing led to another. He then took notice of the Civil War Monument and stone inscription honoring our veterans. So he then decided to add to his project by designing a new monument along side the existing one, honoring all branches of service and the American Legion. So he designed a sketch of this and list of essential items needed for the project. He then asked to present his idea at a Legion Meeting. There had to be some fundraising and getting the funds necessary for the completion of this worthy project. He also went to a Lions Club Meeting and presented the project to them as well. This then led to get approval through the Town Board for a spot near the Civil War Monument. The first attempt and been tabled because it wasnt clear among the board members with his proposal and first rough drawing of the monument so he then had his plans redrawn to a professional level and delivered this again to the board members. He also asked me if I would go with him as a Legion representative. This shed a new light on the project and most everyone agreed but they needed to discuss this further and they would get back to the Boy Scouts with their decision. A few weeks later he finally got their approval. So a year later and with the funding at hand, Zachary ordered the materials and monument stone. Then with everything in place the Boy Scouts, parents, scout masters and volunteers gathered on May 18, 2013 to dig out an area for foundation work and preparation of the stone sand, etc. for the final brick laying with the monument pad already in place work was underway. There were around 20 people giving a helping hand. Work started around 8am and was completed late afternoon. At which time, Crandalls Memorials came to set the monument stone in place, which led to the final work needed for completion. Arrangements were then made for NY State Senator Catherine Young to dedicate this memorial and honor ceremony both for the Veterans and for Zachary Napora, a leading boy scout in his Boy Scout Pack. As Commander of Bolivar Legion Post 772 of Bolivar, NY at the time this project was presented, and the members of the Legion, thank him for such an honor for the Veterans, the community and Nation. -Past Commander of Bolivar Legion, Gerald Bonney f BOLIVAR COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY The Bolivar Community Food Pantry needs your financial support in order to continue to help the people in our area. LAWN AND GARDEN WATERING TIPS (NAPSA)-Scorching-hot weather can drain even the most watersmart landscape. Here are a few tips to help make the most of the water applied to your lawn and garden while protecting your landscape from the harsh heat: Let it Soak The greatest waste of water comes from applying too much, too often-much of the water is never absorbed. Instead of watering for one long session, water a few times for shorter periods and take 15-minute breaks in between each session. This will allow water to soak in, while minimizing runoff. Also, check to see if water is penetrating six to eight inches beneath the surface of the soil. If not, then another cycle may be needed to encourage root growth. Watch the Clock Water in the morning when the sun is low, winds are calm and temperatures are cool and less conducive to evaporation. Consider Dripping When it comes to watering individual trees, flowerbeds, potted containers or other non-grassy areas, consider applying water directly to the roots using low-volume drip irrigation. This will reduce water waste through evaporation or runoff, and will prevent unwanted weeds from growing. Mulch it Good A great way to conserve water and help plants stay healthy is to spread mulch in shrub beds, tree rings and flower gardens. Mulch is a protective covering that is placed around the base of plants, preventing evaporation and weed growth. Mulching helps drainage, encourages root development and cools the soil-reducing water use during hot summer months. Get Automated Using an automated irrigation system is one of the best ways to keep your lawn and landscape beautiful and healthy, while minimizing water waste. Automatic underground sprinkler systems distribute water evenly, preventing overwatering and ensuring that the watering is done at the right time. If you still use a hose to water, then consider using an automated garden hose timer to transform it into an automatic water-saving tool. Using an automated irrigation system is one of the best ways to keep your lawn and landscape beautiful and healthy. FRIENDSHIP FREE LIBRARY HOURS: Mon.
