Shabbat Shiur

(It is a tree of life to them that hold fast to it and all its supporters are happy; its ways are ways of pleasantness and all its paths are peace.)

Commentary and Questions to Ponder

But the Israelites said to Moses, Lo, we are doomed! We will perish, all of us perish! Everyone who so much as ventures near the Lords Tabernacle must die. Alas, we are done for; we are doomed! (Numbers 17:27-28) It was in response to this agonizing cry that Aaron and the Levites were bidden in xviii to guard the Sanctuary against the approach of any stranger. (Rabbi Joseph H. Hertz) And if I perish, I perish. (Esther 4:16) (Abraham Lincoln)

Song after the Musaf Amidah

Y'hi-yu L'ratzon Y'hi-yu l'ra-tzon im-rei fee (im-rei fee), v'heg-yon lee-bee l'fanecha Adonai tzuree, Adonai Tzuree (tzuree) v'go-alee (v'go-alee), v'go-alee.

(May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to You, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.)

If they do kill me, I shall never die another death.

Was Esthers statement before approaching Achashverosh, in violation of the law, a reference to the panicked lament of the Israelites (the same Hebrew verb is used in both texts)? Was it the interruption of their journey toward the Promised Land (personal or national) that so unsettled the Israelites, or was it the lack of any such ultimate goal or transcendent meaning? Which is the more tragic demise?

(Prayer for Healing) Mi she berach avoteinu, M'kor hab'racha l'imoteinu May the source of strength, Who blessed the ones before us Help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing And let us say: Amen. Mi she berach imoteinu, M'kor hab'racha l'avoteinu Bless those in need of healing with r'fuah sh'leima The renewal of body, the renewal of spirit, And let us say: Amen.
