A man can row a boat in still water at 3 km/hr. He can walk at a speed of 5 km/hr on the shore. The water in the river flows at 2 km/hr. If the man rows across the river and walks along the shore to reach the opposite point on the river bank, find the direction in which he should row the boat so that he could reach the opposite shore in the least possible time. Also calculate this time. The width of the river is 500 m. [=25022 t= 12.65 min] A point moves in a plane xy according to the law x=a Sint, y=a (1Cost) where a and are positive constants. Find :- (a) The distance S traversed by the point during the time t (b) The angle between the points velocity and acceleration vectors. Two ships are 10 Km apart on a line running South to North. The one farther north is streaming west at 40 km/hr. The other is streaming toward north at 40 km/hr what is their distance of closest approach and how long do they take to reach it ? [56.56 km, t=1/8 hr] A car accelerates from rest at a constant rate for some time after which it decelerates at a constant rate of to come to rest. If the total time lapse is T seconds, evaluate (i). the maximum velocity reached and (ii). The total distance traveled. [Vin=( / + )t, s= t2/2(+)] A train starts from station A with uniform acceleration a1 for some distance then goes with uniform retardation a2 for some more distance to come to rest at station B. The distance between A and B is 4 km and train takes 4 minutes to complete the journey. If accelerations are in Km/minutes2 units, Show that 1/a1 + 1/a2 =2 . A motor cycle and a car starts from rest at the same place at the same time and travel in the same direction the cycle accelerates uniformly at 1m/s2 upon a speed of 36 km/hr and the car at 0.5 m/s2 up to speed of 54 km/hr. Calculate the time and the distance at which the car overtakes the cycle. [t =35 sec, s=300 m] Two trains each of length 100 m moving in opposite directions along parallel lines, meet with their speeds 60 km/hr and 30 km/hr. If their accelerations are 30 cm/s2 and 20 cm/s2 respectively find the time they take to pass each other. [t=7.44 sec] A bullet fired into a fixed target looses half of its velocity after penetrating 3 cm. How much further it will penetrate before coming to rest assuming that it faces constant resistance to motion. A parachutist after bailing out falls 50 m, without friction when the parachute opens, he decelerate downwards with 2 m/s2 he reaches the ground with a speed of 3 m/s. a. How long is the parachutist in the air? b. At what height did he bail out? [17.34 sec., 292.7 m] A stone is dropped from the top of a cliff of height h, n second later, a second stone is projected downwards form the same cliff with a vertically downward velocity u. Show that the two stones will reach the bottom of the cliff together, if 8h (u gn)2 = gn2 (2u gn)2 A small steel ball is dropped from a height of 0.5 m with a tall glycerin jar. It hits the glycerin with a certain velocity and then strikes to the bottom with the same constant velocity. It reaches the bottom 0.5 second after it is dropped. What is the height of the glycerin in the jar? What is the average velocity of the ball over the whole journey? If a = 2i - 3j, b = i - j -k, c = i +2j + k; Show that (a x b )x c) = (a.c) b - (b.c) a (i) In circular motion , obtain an expression for its resultant acceleration.

(ii) How will you find direction of resultant acceleration in non-uniform circular motion? Explain with help of a diagram. 14. 15. Centripetal component of force can never do work. Why? Sketch the region bounded by the curve y=2x-x2 and the x- axis and find its area, using integration. A particle moves in the X-Y plane under the action of a force F such that the value of its linear momentum p at any time is px=2cost and py=2sint . What is the angle between F and p at a given time t? The speed of a particle moving in a plane is equal to the magnitude of its instantaneous velocity ,v= = (vx2+vy2). a) Show that the rate of change of speed is dv/dt=vxax+vyay)/ (vx2+vy2). b) Show that the rate of change of speed can be expressed as dv/dt =v.a/v, and use this to explain why dv/dt is equal to at the component of a that is parallel to v.

A particle starting from rest , undergoes an acceleration that increases linearly with time, i.e, a=kt. Estimate :i)the particles velocity n sec after start ii)the distance covered in these n sec. A particle is projected upwards with velocity 20m/sec. Simultaneously another particle is projected with velocity 202m/s at 450 i) What is the acceleration of first particle relative to the second? ii) What is the initial velocity of first particle relative to the other? iii) What is the distance between two particles after 2sec? On a two lane road , car A is travelling with a speed of 36 km/hr. Two cars B and C approach car A from opposite directions with a speed of 54km/hr each. At a certain instant, when the distance AB=AC, both being 1km,B decides to overtake A before C does. What minimum acceleration of car B is required to avoid an accident?
