A little help from dad

Approximately 7231 Claremont Unified School District students returned to campuses yesterday morning. Executive Director Mike Bateman said the number should be viewed as a rough estimate as numbers from the first day of school are still being tallied. We normally have 75 to 100 kids who are noshows on the first day, Mr. Bateman said on Tuesday. Well have a better idea of our enrollment in the next few days. The 2010-11 school year started a week earlier than previous years due to results of a survey by the Claremont Faculty Association. The results indicated a desire to begin the school year around the same time as neighboring districts, to allow for more time to prepare for Advanced Placement Exams and to give students time to register for summer courses at local community colleges. The final day of school is June 9, 2011.

School began a week early this year and almost everyone was ready to start. Claremont resident Khaled Albassami tries to coax his 6-year-old daughter Aleen Albassami into her first grade classroom on Tuesday at Vista del Valle Elementary School. Despite the tears Aleen soon joined her classmates and settled into the first day of school.

Claremont tragedy
Dear Editor: The Monahan family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the love and support they have received from friends, and members of the Claremont community following the tragic accident which killed our dear friend Catherine Shelton. We are devastated that this beautiful person has been taken from us. Catherine had become part of our family and the suddenness of her passing in such tragic circumstances is difficult for us to comprehend. We are all truly blessed to have known her, and will cherish her memory. Our thoughts are with her parents Bruce and Chisato, her son Harrison, and her sister Leslie.

he Claremont Police Department responded to a call at 10:25 a.m. yesterday morning by a resident who reported seeing 2 men jumping over the backyard wall of a home at the corner of Scripps Drive and Santa Rosa Court.
Claremont police arrived on the scene just minutes later with the backup of the Chino Police Departments K-9 unit and a Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department helicopter, however, the suspects escaped. At press time, the suspects are still at large. The suspects were described as 2 black males wearing white t-shirts with baggy black pants and jerry curl type hair, Claremont Police Lieutenant Karlan Bennett told the COURIER on Tuesday. According to Claremont police, the caller indicated seeing the suspects break into the house and also saw one of the suspects looking out of the back window. Police conducted a search inside the home and around the surrounding neighborhood but were not able to local the 2 men. Approximately 2 hours later, they finished their search and allowed residents on the block to return home. Claremont resident Chris Usher, who lives on the same block as the burglarized residence, said he became aware that something was happening when a friend noticed the helicopter flying overhead. I was working on the other side of Scripps [Drive] and my

friend said that she heard a helicopter, Mr. Usher said. Its been a long time since someone has tried to break into a house around hereprobably 15 years. Claremont police notified the homeowner of the burglary while on the scene. No information was disclosed on possible missing possessions.

COURIER photos/Steven Felschundneff Kelly Diaz jokes with her colleagues as she prepares her Sycamore Elementary School classroom for the first day of school on Monday. Ms. Diaz was laid off in 2009 but was rehired under the new contract the teachers negotiated with CUSD earlier this month.

Teachers return to work after RIF notices are lifted

he Claremont Unified School District Board of Educations approval to rescind the Reduction in Force (RIF) notices handed out in March did not just apply to the 2010 recipients.
The board action also included several teachers who received RIF notices in 2009 returning to their classrooms and having parts of their positions restored. Its good newswere happy to have them back, said Kevin Ward, CUSD director of human resources. We had 9 teachers who were on the RIF list in 2009 and now 6 of them are back in full-time or part-time positions. Two of the teachers turned down their positions and one of them is on maternity leave. Whats been great is that half of the teachers who have their jobs back are back at the site they were before. And the other 3 [teachers] are excited to be going to their respective spots. The 6 teachers include Kelly Diaz (Sycamore), Aimee Gibb (Sycamore), Yvonne Murphy (Condit), Ann OConnor (Sycamore), Jennifer Parker (Vista del Valle) and Dalet Ramos (Sumner-Danbury). With the exception of Ms. OConnor, the other 5 teachers were hired by CUSD in 2008. Ms. Diaz had taught at Sycamore for one year before receiving a RIF notice in March 2009. When her job was not restored, she continued to work within CUSD as a long-term substitute teacher and started her own after-school tutoring program. Her position was recently restored at 80-percent, meaning she will work Monday through Thursday each week as a first and 2nd grade teacher. While some of her peers who were also RIFd in 2009 moved on to other districts and other career choices, Ms. Diaz decided to wait it out. Her family was one of the reasons why she stayed with CUSD. My daughter was starting at Claremont High

Teacher Jodi Erlinger-Irwin, left, drops off some school materials for fellow teachers Aimee Gibb, right, and Mary Town on Monday at Sycamore Elementary School. Ms. Gibb job was reinstated earlier this month when the new contract between the teachers union and CUSD was signed.

School and I wanted to be accessible and the timing of everything ended up working out, she said. I was able to be home more with my family and I found out how much they needed me there. But now, I feel like I won the lotto and Im happy to be back [at Sycamore]. All Ive wanted to do is get back into the classroom. Ms. Gibb will begin her first year at Sycamore this fall in an 80 percent full-time position. Last year, she

worked under a temporary contract at Oakmont Elementary School and decided to stay with the district with the hope of regaining a full-time position. In her 5-year career that has also included a stint in Rialto Unified School District, Ms. Gibb has been RIFd 3 times.

I was on a temporary contract and now Im back on a probationary contractI am excited to come back, she said. I stayed because I saw how committed the union and the district were to getting us back. They fought hard for us and it was worth it for me to stay. I love this district and love seeing the kids grow from year to year. Im thrilled that Ill have more time in the classroom. Ms. Gibb looks forward to embracing the Sycamore community as a kindergarten and first grade teacher. Sycamore really aligns with my style where the learning is hands-on, she

said. The school is also student-centered and it is a family, where the parents are also partners in learning. Along with the job restorations, 7 new secondary level teachers and one new nurse are joining CUSD this year. The new additions include Terry Boehmer (school nurse), Melanie Riley Gonzalez (CHSBand), Marianna Lanz (CHS & El RobleSpanish), Akshay Mathew (CHSScience), Jillian Sandoval (CHS Social Science), Aide Suarez (CHS Spanish), Angela Tudorii (CHSFrench) and Sarah Woods (CHSScience).

A Haiti-Claremont connection
by Carl Welty

demystifying sustainability

he damaging consequences of non-sustainable development are apparent in countless wayssome dramatically foregrounded by current news, and many that are more subtle and local. Januarys earthquake in Haiti is a prime example of an environmental and economic catastrophe that was in the making long before the actual event.

Here in southern California, our local issues of water and energy conservation, land use, and vulnerability to wildfires and landslides have made us all increasingly aware of the need for intelligent planning. Sustainable design starts with understanding a specific environmental context and the place of humans within this larger ecosystem. It offers solutions that solve seemingly separate problems in one well-integrated design. Two projects serve as examples: a contemporary design for redevelopment in Haiti, and a 23-year-old, thriving housing development here in Claremont. The catastrophic earthquake in Haiti revealed not just the island nations poverty but also profound issues of sustainability: most obviously its lack of appropriate building materials and building codes, but also its polluted urban slums, insufficient power grid and sewage treatment, depopulated rural countryside, and massive deforestation which has caused erosion problems and soil too degraded for agriculture. The earthquake exposed a human ecosystem that was not synchronized with the larger local ecosystem. Together with the non-profit International Green Technology Institute (IGTI), based in Southern California, Claremont Environmental Design Group (CEDG) has created the Project Green Haiti initiative, a proposal to establish 50 E Villages throughout Haiti, each one to house and support about 2000 people.

Photo courtesy of Claremont Environmental Design Group A dry creek runs through the park of this 84-home development at the corner of Mills and Miramar avenues in Claremont. The dry creek allows for natural water runoff eliminating the need for underground drainage pipes. The sustainable development was designed by Claremont Environmental Design group and was completed in 1987.

The E Village is designed to reconnect Haitians to their local ecosystem. It will enable people to leave over-populated large cities, and to start growing food to feed themselves and to sell to local markets. Each E Village will provide housing, hygiene, off-the-grid electrical power, health care, food preparation, clean water and facilities for governance. It will make possible sustainable agriculture not only for food, but also for appropriate building materials and even exportable products. Sustainable agriculture and agroforestry techniques will properly integrate agriculture into the landscape, preventing erosion and improving the health of the soil.

Integrated community centers will provide an Internet connection for training in sustainable agriculture, entrepreneurship and other ongoing needs. The initiative will address problems of long-term renewable energy and food securityboth crucial for Haiti to develop a sustainable economywithout depending on a power grid or other extensive infrastructure that Haiti currently doesnt have. The E Village can be quickly constructed to address the emergency needs of thousands of Haitians still living in tent cities. An E Village can be configured with temporary

pre-fabricated dome shelters that provide safety against both weather and earthquakes, giving the community time to develop an economy and, ultimately, more permanent housing. Everything needed to build a village for 2000 people will fit into 30 20foot shipping containers. After delivery, the containers will be repurposed to house the villages civic buildings, communal kitchens and washing facilities. The E Village can also be built from the start with permanent housing: CEDG has created a small, solarpowered starter home designed to be easily expanded using locally grown building materials. The house is well-shaded and well-ventilated, essential for Haitis tropical climate. A more local example of sustainable planning is an 84-home development at the corner of Mills and Miramar avenues in Claremont, completed in 1987. CEDG addressed multiple problems with a well-

integrated design. East-west street orientation allows the homes to optimize solar orientation for energy and natural light. Taking advantage of the sites natural slope allows water runoff to be directed on the surface through a dry creek in the parknot through underground drainage pipes. The dry creek helps recharge the ground water, rather than sending runoff through underground storm drains. The park provides a large, green common area for walking and playing. This project demonstrates, further, that sustainable design can be less expensive to build: the developer did not have to install subsurface drainpipes, and grading expenses were minimized by the street layout integrated with the natural slope. A great testament to the developments ongoing success is the very low turnover of homeowners. Sustainable design begins by understanding the larger environment, and that a successful sustainable

project integrates social and economic requirements into the larger ecosystem. The lesson from Haitiand from Claremont as wellis that human social and economic requirements are not separate from natures ecosystem, and that sustainable design must integrate these seemingly separate problems. For more information, please join us at Sustainable Claremonts Sustainability Dialog talk on Project Green Haiti on September 13 at 7 p.m. in the Hahn Building, Pomona College, Rm. 101 at 420 N. Pet licensing
The city of Claremont and the Inland Valley Human Society have launched an amnesty program to encourage residents to bring their pets license into compliance without a penalty. From September 13th to the 27th, penalty fees will be waived for pet owners licensing their animals at the Humane Society at 500 Humane Society Way in Pomona. In order to license a pet, Claremont residents will need a copy of the pets current rabies certificate as well as spay/neuter certificate if applicable. Licenses range from $40 for unaltered dogs to $20 for altered dogs. Seniors receive a discounted fee of $5 for altered dogs. In the state of California, every dog over the age

our town
of 4 months must be vaccinated against rabies and have a current license. The Inland Valley Humane Society & S.P.C.A. monitors the licensing/rabies control program for the City of Claremont. Many dog owners purchase I.D. tags for their animals and believe this is the only form of identification needed. While an I.D. tag is optional, city and state mandates require that each dog be issued and wear a valid license. Unlike an I.D. tag, a license has the number of the local humane society where the dog is registered, and a numbered code. If your dog is reported lost, the humane society can

access their database to determine all important contact information for the owner including address, phone number and whether the dog has a current rabies vaccination. The Inland Valley Humane Society assists dog owners with getting a reduced fee rabies vaccine for their pets by holding vaccination clinics on the shelter premises. On September 14, from 7 to 8 p.m., the Humane Society will hold a low cost vaccination clinic at College Park in Claremont. The clinic will be held on a first-come-first-served basis and there is an 8:00 p.m. cut-off time. Humane Society staff will also be on hand to license your pet. For information, please contact the Humane Society Licensing Department at 623-9777 ext. 652 or 653.

CHS athletics finds new home in Sierra League

COURIER photo/Steven Felschundneff Members of the Claremont High School varsity football team warm up prior to practice last Wednesday at Claremont High School. CHS sports teams are moving from the Baseline League to the Sierra League.

laremont High Schools sports teams will encounter a new brand of competition throughout the fall, winter and spring sports seasons. No longer a part of the Baseline League, CHS is moving on to the next chapter in its storied athletic history as one of 6 teams in a restructured Sierra League. According to CHS Athletic Director Rick Dutton, the move is long overdue. I never thought that we belonged there [Baseline League], said Mr. Dutton. We didnt have the same enrollment the other teams had. So the whole process [to switch leagues] started about one and a half years ago. The opportunity to reconfigure leagues comes every 4 years. Schools can request a transfer into another league based on how they have fared. That way those that are over their heads and those that are dominating have the choice to stay in their leagues or not, Mr. Dutton explained. While Glendora now moves into the Baseline League, Claremont joins Ayala, Charter Oak, Chino Hills, Damien, St. Lucys and South Hills in the revamped Sierra League. Charter Oak and South Hills replace Chino and Diamond Bar. The switch will not affect the boys volleyball team which will remain part of the Pacific League. However, the shift will not allow the CHS boys tennis squad to defend its Baseline League title next season, but rather compete in the newly assigned Sierra League. Though CHS had been a longtime participant in the Baseline League, the

league was altered in 2002 to include a mixture of former Mt. Baldy League teams and the best 2 Baseline League teams at the time (Claremont, Upland). The change occurred at the height of Claremonts success as the top football team in the Baseline League. After 4 straight losing seasons from 2005 through 2008, the football team improved last season to a 5-5 record. CHS football coach Mike Collins is looking forward to his teams first season in the Sierra League. Claremont does not have any Baseline League teams on its schedule this year. I think its exciting and for football, the Sierra League is every bit as strong as the Baseline League, Coach Collins said. Charter Oak and South Hills definitely have made the Sierra League stronger than it was before. Overall, I think that the Sierra League is almost as strong as the Baseline League. CHS girls volleyball coach Chris McDermott agrees. His team will only potentially play Baseline League teams this season through tournament play, but he believes the Sierra League will still be challenging enough for his players. I would have loved to still be in the Baseline League because our goal was to win league and we were getting closer to doing that last year, Coach McDermott said. The move to the Sierra League will be just as good though. We have all solid teams and its a real tough league. Even though our team is moving down a division in CIF, the level of competition will still be about the same.

Great things
A performance to remember

COURIER photos/Chris Guzman Brothers Keith and Craig Colclough greet each other on stage Saturday after their performance at the Claremont Presbyterian Church. The Three Colcloughs in Concert was their first performance together in more than 10 years.

laremont natives Craig and Keith Colclough joined together Saturday for the first time in more than 10 years for a performance at the Claremont Presbyterian Church. The Colclough brothers are well traveled in their opera careers but have not performed together since they were teenagers at Claremont High School. The performance also included Craigs wife, Amanda.

Craig and Keith both graduated from CHS and attended the Claremont Presbyterian Church where they were very active in musical theatre and choir. Theres really no pressure performing in a place like this, said Keith, a place thats dear to your heart with people who are dear to your heart, just sharing what you love. The brothers felt that it was now or never for them

to perform together as Keith will be attending University of California, Santa Barbara in the fall for graduate studies and Craig will be traveling to Florida as a young artist in the Florida Grand Opera. Very fulfilling, said their father Dave Colclough of seeing his sons perform together, Weve been trying to put this together for years.

Craig and Amanda Colclough perform La ci darem la mano by Mozart, Saturday during the Three Colcloughs Concert at the Claremont Presbyterian Church. The married couple met at CHS and is currently expecting their first child.

AND THE EMMY GOES TO... Two Claremont High School alumni received Emmy Awards Sunday evening in Hollywood for their work on the HBO miniseries, The Pacific. Claremont High (79) alumna Michelle Ashford won for co-producing and David Goldberg (76) for Outstanding Visual Effects as one of the shows visual effects supervisors. The Pacific won the 2010 Primetime Emmy Award for Best Miniseries. The COURIER has been in contact with Mr. Goldberg and readers can expect a full story in the near future. BREAKING GROUND Plans were submitted this week for the affordable housing project at the former COURIER site, 111 S. College Ave., according to the City Managers weekly report. Construction permits are expected to be issued by the beginning of November. A DAY TO REST A reminder that the COURIER office will be closed Monday, September 6 in observance of Labor Day. HIGH FLYING ACHIEVEMENT Phi Mu presented Iris Cummings Critchell with the Outstanding Alumnae AchievementContribution to Profession/Career Award at the 2010 National Convention in Phoenix. Ms. Critchell joined the Iota Sigma Chapter of Phi Mu in 1938 at the Uni-

versity of Southern California, she received her pilots license and was a member of the first Civilian Pilot Training Program. As the only woman out of 50 students, she graduated from the Advanced Acrobatics course and became a flight instructor shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Ms. Critchell flew 18 different types of military aircrafts then returned to flight instruction, developing curriculum for USCs College of Aeronautics before she and her husband, Howard, established the Bates Foundation Aeronautics Program at Harvey Mudd College. Most recently, Ms. Critchell was a recipient, along with her fellow WWII female aviators, of the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award presented by the U.S. Congress. Founded in 1852, Phi Mu is a womens organization that provides personal and academic development, service to others and commitment to excellence and friendship. BRUSH UP ON HISTORY Steve Comba will exhibit a series of paintings entitled Natural/History at Loft 204 in the Packing House. Mr. Combas paintings and works on paper were inspired by the vaults of museums after spending 20 years in the field. Loft 204 is open by appointment by calling 391-4208. Receptions, which are free to the public, are planned for this Friday, September 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. and a closing reception on Friday, October 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. Loft 204 is located at 532 W. First St. #204. For information, call 319-8129. WHAT YOURE SAYING ABOUT THE COURIER Favorites: Mix of news about all schools in Claremont; Police Blotter;

city and school district happenings and budget matters, layoffs and changes; calendar of events. Least favorite: Extreme left and right letters to the editor that just wont let something go (Let it go already!); Sad letters to the editor about the loss of a tree. (p.s. Not all of us know how to make COURIER payments online and, yes, some of us dont trust the security of such sites. Yes, Id like to pay less for renewal of a subscription: senior discounts must be a thing of the past.) Favorite: Lex in the City. Least favorite: Dueling letters to the editor that never quit. Favorites: Crime report, letters, photos. Least favorite: City Council photos.
Until next time, Sammy
