STAAD Assignment No. 2

Problem 1: (50%)

A factory project is planned to be constructed. The land area will be covered with
steel structural systems. The main structural frames are suggested for construction at span
module 6.0 m. The main frame is schematically shown in Fig. 1. The frame is subjected to
dead loads, live loads, and wind loads as shown in figure. Level 1 will not be used as a floor,
and it has two link members connecting the frame columns horizontally. The main frame is
braced in the transverse direction.

It is required to:
1) Calculate the loads over a typical main frame, and then assume reasonable primary
sections for all the main frame elements.
2) Using Staad: perform a static structural analysis of the main frame truss using your
calculated loads. Make Staad do check on design using different load combinations
according the Canadian code(s). Using the Select subroutine optimize your design.
3) Providing that the straining actions resulted from Staad are reasonable, manually
recheck on Staad check of design, only for marked members in the truss.

Present the Staad analysis and design by an appropriate report, especially for the selected
members. Also show your manual calculations. (Optional: You can attach a copy of your
input file on a floppy disk). Any missing data can be reasonably assumed.

Problem 2: (50%)

Figure 2 shows a proposed steel structural system for a typical floor of an office building.
The superimposed loads shall include: own weights, flooring 0.5 kN/m2 and live loads
2.0 kN/m2. All the simple beams connections are simply supported on the main girders.
The main girders are supported on the shown columns.

It is required to assume preliminary dimensions for the structural system, analyze, check
code, optimize your design using the STAAD software by using only the STAAD Floor
option. Assume one way distribution option for all spans unless not appropriate.
Manually, check and compare the STAAD analysis and design for only one of the main
girders; for load combination (1.25 D.L. + 1.5 L.L.)

Present the Staad analysis and design by an appropriate report, especially for the selected
members. Also show your manual calculations. (Optional: You can attach a copy of your
input file on a floppy disk). Any missing data can be reasonably assumed.
