Crash Land Into Adventure!

The year is 1949. You are Joe King - 'pilot for hire', along with your trusty mechanic Sparky (who's addicted to comic books), you are struggling to survive in South America. Trouble starts when Joe decides to fly actress Faye Russel to a distant location where she is expected to start filming her latest movie. Thanks to a gigantic thunderstorm they soon find themselves stranded in the vast jungle of the Amazon where a sinister plot involving Dr. Frank Ironstein and an ancient tribe of Amazon women develops. Flight of the Amazon Queen is an irreverent pastiche of the adventure serials that were popular in the 1940's, it is brimming with fun-filled action and a prgressively difficult level of play. The game has over 100 different graphic locations with over 40 characters with which to interact. The story progresses through the use of full screen cutaway sequences giving the game dramatic depth. The CD-ROM version features full ingame speech using a variety of actors, and dramatic sound effects. When a game has booted, press the Left Trigger on the Dreamcast controller and the 'Virtual Keyboard' will launch, you can use it to skip cut scenes in the games and demos (esc), you can also name your save files within the game menu. Use the D-Pad on your DC controller to navigate around the virtual keyboard, pressing 'A' on your controller will input your

selection into the game. When playing the games, every five minutes or so the 'Autosave' function will launch, it will automatically save your position in the game you are playing directly to your VMU. If you do not want your VMU to fill up with saves from the different versions and demos, remove your VMU from your Dreamcast controller before playing the various selections included on this CD. Once you have chosen a version of the game you want to play through to the end, insert your VMU into your DC controller, the autosave function will then save to your VMU, to save in a particular place during the game, use the in game menu and the virtual keyboard as described above. The Queen.tbl file used in this CD was supplied by ScummVM.org (a required file for running the original FOTAQ data files with ScummVM). About:
Nowadays it is rare to get the excited feeling that you've found a game you actually enjoy playing. Surprisingly it's neither a new game, nor in 3D, nor an ego-shooter, nor an MMORPG. Flight Of The Amazon Queen is a 2D Point And Click adventure of the year 1995, with a resolution of 320x240 (or even less), low quality sound and MIDI soundtrack. But the thing FOTAQ's got and that I miss in most new games is the magic ingredient called "Fun". "I'm a pilot for hire, not a pyromaniac!" You're Joe King (Once again: Joe King. Got it?), a pilot for hire and owner of the plane "Amazon Queen". At the beginning you're about to fly the very famous actress Faye Russel to her next set, but an old friend gets in your way, wants to fly Faye by himself and locks you away in his own room. You get out of the room through a hole in the floor. You visit the famous actress and ask her for help. She's ready to help you if you find her some towels (she's taking a shower while talking to you). You get her the towels and she gives you a dress. You find some plastic breasts, a wig, a necklace and shoes. Note that everything is in pixel graphics and it's so well done that you're just playing to see the beautiful pixel art. You escape and fly Faye to the next set. But your plane gets hit by a lightning and crashes into the Amazon jungle. And that's when the real fun begins. Artificial Stupidity The real story is about a weird scientist who captures Amazon women to turn them into Amazon women dinosaurs. In the end he wants to take over the world with his army of Amazon women dinosaurs. Before you can rescue the Amazon women and save the world there are so many things to do that it will glue you to the screen for about 8 to 10 hours. Think about Indiana Jones mixed up with Monkey Island. "Tying that up ain't gonna do me much good." Let me explain what's so addictive about FOTAQ. First of all, the sound. The voice actors sound great, especially Joe's voice and the voice of the shop keeper in the Amazon village, who looks like Michael Moore himself. Joe's comments are just hilarious. For example, when you look at a pencil, he says: "2B or not 2B, that IS the question." The graphics are awesome. There's a great variety that keeps you enjoying the game. The locations vary from the theatre at the beginning, to jungle, villages, Amazon temples, underground bases and rooms filled with clich secret ways to open secret passages (but actually don't work). You'll see dinosaurs, dogs, soldiers, Amazon women, explorers who try to get caught by those Amazon women, inhabitants, monkeys, sloths, mummies, zombies, giant robots and speaking gorillas which don't exist. The cutscenes mostly show persons in close-up and are a real joy to watch. Sure, the game's 2D, it's pixelated, but it's beautiful! It has style and it fits together way better than new games, most of which are just

produced to get lots of money with the lowest amount of effort. The music is also very good, even though it's MIDI music. Each location has its own background music, and so it never becomes annoying or boring. Turning off the music would hurt the atmosphere of the game. "That should do the trick." All in all I strongly suggest to try this game. The puzzles are not too hard, you'll need the walkthrough a few times though (if you're impatient like me). The gameplay is like any other point and click adventure. You've got your inventory, your usual phrases like pick up, open, close, move, pull, use, et cetera and in dialogues you can pick your answers from a few possibilities. It's required that you install SCUMMVM (a little engine made for such old games) on your PC, then download the game and run FOTAQ from SCUMM's interface. And I promise: You won't regret it. GENERAL TIPS

In general, it's much quicker to use the keyboard shortcuts than the action icons. Use O for open, C for close, M for move, G for give, L for look at, P for pick up, T for talk to, and U for use.

To look at an object in your inventory, left click on it. To perform the default action on any object (which is listed when you move the mouse over the object), right click.

To save, load, or quit a game, either press F5 or click on the journal in your inventory.

There are several times when you'll need to cover a lot of ground, and Joe's slow walking will become annoying. Press Ctrl+F to put the game into fast mode. Be sure to press Ctrl+F again to reset to normal before entering any new locations or performing any actions.

CHARACTERS
JOE KING Joe is the Hero with the deep voice and the Hero of the adventure The Flight of The Amazon Queen! Joe is Captain of the Amazon Queen, a little old and rusty, but cute and flyable Plane, with witch he delivers Parcels and passengers safely to their destination. He is always accompanied by his mechanic Sparky. Joe has a girl in every Harbour and knows how to treat women, especialle Rita, Big Hugh's girlsfriend.

SPARKY Sparky is Joes nearly puperal Mechanic on the Amazon Queen, the plane they both earn their living with by bringing freight or persons from A to B and some times C. Sparky likes Commander Rocket Comics and would love to read them all day long and not be working or so. Other have this habbit with Videogames.

ANDERSON Anderson ist Joes Rival in Flightbuissiness. The stupid Dutchman wants to take away Joe's Flight for Faye Russel and for this he locks Joe up in a Hotelroom. This need Revenge. Later Anderson turns out to be not that big moron.

Well, you always force him to disappear.

DR.IRONSTEIN Frank Ironstein is the crazy villain in this adventure. It's your and Joe Kings Duty to stop his evil Plans of taking over the world by the use of his Dino-Ray. Sounds like a good start into an exciting adventure, right, so what do you need to know...:

JIMI & MARY LOU They both are the preachers in the jungle. Jimi more than Marylou. Jimi is also interestet in raising and studying the apes. Marylou instead like to talk bad about her husband and fileing her fingernails.

THE GAMESCREEN
Well, the upper part of the screen is the actual gamescreen, here you see all the action just like in a movie, you see what Joe is doing, or what else is happening. In the lower quarter of the screen there are the buttons you can influence on the happening in the game with.

Once you collectet more than 4 Items you have to scroll through your inventory by using the arrow buttons.

You can use your Mouse, oh, you have to use your mouse to Click on a actionbutton to build little sentences that Joe will do. For example, you can tell Joe to pull the curtain in the back of the hotel room open. This is how it works

Joe pulls the cord on the curtain opens.

You can also build sentence with the items in your inventory, e.g.:

Use sheet-rope on radiator.

Then Joe will think of a way he can use these two things together.

THE OPTIONS MENU


To get acces to the Option menu you must push F5. The whole menu looks like a diary, Joe's Diary.

On the left side of the menu there are the Points of interest in the menu:

- Read Entry

- Make Entry -> this means:

you can save your Game here!

-> you can make up to 100 Diary entry! This should be enough, even for you.

- Close -> this means:

You close the Optionsmeu with this button!

We are in the year 1949 at 11:58 A.M. and 36 Seconds. An Alarmclock attatched to a bomb is waiting to blast off at 12:00. Joe King and Rita are tied to a pole and wait for their end. Oh, what a lucky incident, Sparky is coming to rescue them und now they must

FOTAQ Manual run and pick up Faye Russel the famous actress to give her a ride, better a flight. The evil thing is, Anderson, the ugly Dutchman is waiting for Joe instead of Faye Russel. Anderson wants to take Faye on a flight. That's how everything starts.

Move North into the temple entrance Exit North East into a room with the dino rat Move the leftmost corpse and pick up an arm bone Move the next body and pick up a skull Exit North East into the next room Move the left-center body and pick up a leg bone Move the far-right body and pick up a rib cage Exit North East back into the entrance room Use the leg bone in the lower-right hole Use the rib cage in the center hole Use the skull in the upper hole Use the arm bone in the slot-machine socket at far left Use some money in the slot-machine slot Move the arm bone of the slot machine to disclose a secret passage

Referring to the temple map, enter the right-hand portal of the large statue and make your way to the sarcophagus room Talk to the leftmost zombie woman:

* I don't see any Prince. Where is he? * How do you know the Prince is still in there? * Prove to me he's still there, open the sarcophagus. * You're afraid he's not inside, aren't you?

Pick up the mummy wrappings Talk to the zombie woman again:

Open the sarcophagus to obtain the prince's crown Use the knife on the vines in the sarcophagus Close the sarcophagus, then move it to disclose a secret passage Walk to the new exit Use the knife on the tree sap Pick up the tree sap Move the fountain head at left and pick up the blue jewel Exit West through the archway and talk to Ian:

* How do I get over to where you are? * I gotta go now.

Exit West into the steam room Use the hand puppet to retrieve the stone disc Return East East to the room with the fountain head

Use the lever to return to the large statue Follow the central (mouth) portal to the upper pulley room Use the stone disc on the spindle Use the gnarled vine on the stone disc Return via the large statue to the lower pulley room Use the loose vines on the pulley Use the bat on the pulley to raise the stone door at right Move East and pick up the pick from the cave Return West and lower the slab by using the bat on the pulley Return via the large statue to the upper pulley room, then exit North to the cavern Use the pick on the stalactite and pick up a flint Use the pick on the wall hole at left to open a passage to the lower treasure room Return to the large statue and follow the left-hand portal to the snake room Use the mummy wrappings on the arm bone Use the flint on the lighter Use the lighter on the makeshift torch to ignite it Use the lit torch on the snake to drive it away

FOTAQ Manual Move North into the waterfall room, then take the lit-up North exit beneath the walkway If you lowered the stone slab back down in the lower pulley room, the stone slab at right should be raised Move East to the lower pit area You need Ian to spring a trap for you later, so you'll have to release him Move the lever on the statue holding the rope, then talk to Ian at right:

* I've got an idea! * I'd like you to untie the rope tethering the cage

Move the lever again to free Ian Return to the waterfall room and take the South East exit into the purple room Look at the dead body to obtain an ID card and a piece of stone Move West East into the lasers room This room has two less-than-obvious exits to the South East and West Move West West into the double-waterfall room CUT SCENE: Zeppelin hangar Sounds like a problem for Ian!

FOTAQ Manual Pick up the big stick at left Put the blue jewel "teardrop" in the right side of the statue's face Return via the large statue and sarcophagus exit to the steam room Look at Ian's pulverised body to obtain a small piece of rock Return via the large statue to the lower treasure room off the cavern Use the big stick on the crypt Look at the crypt to obtain a death mask Use the rest of the mummy wrappings on the death mask to clean it Return to the lasers room and use the death mask on the lizard heads Follow the opened exit North to the upper treasure room Use the tree sap on the bat, then use the sticky bat to retrieve the green jewel Return to the double-waterfall room and put the green jewel in the statue's face Exit through the right-hand secret passage into the altar room Use the knife on the sticky bat to remove the sap Use the tree sap on the chunk of rock Use the sticky chunk of rock on the bit of stone to make a stone key Use the stone key on the altar statue to disclose a secret staircase Descend the stairs and cross the green room into the temple maze

Now go into the room tha t Klunk was guarding and look at the piece of paper on the desk. Use the pencil o n the piece of paper and voila, the combination for the safe is visible. Now go to the safe.

Go into the left entrance and do something with the mummys. They crumble and so you take whats left with you.

Talk to the Hologirl and tell her, that you know (you know it, don't you) that it's about the human. So you're right, so what? You can pass her by and enter the temple. So ask her who she is.

Enter the door the right. Go through the "door" and continue to the right. Look at the ded body on the ground and talk to the zombiegirls. Talk about everything possible. It's important to ask them what happened to the prince, annoy them and ask for evidence that he's still there until the brainless zombies open up the sarkophag.

Take the mummy wrapping with you! Talk to the ladyzombie again! She wants a reason, okay tell he you took something out of the sarkophag.

After the zombies disappeared you can open up the sarkophag again and take the crown with you and cut the roots away from the sarkophag. NOw you close the sarkophag again and move it away. Now enter the hole behind the sarkophag.

USe your knive on the piece of sap and then take some of the sap with you. Walk some steps. You reach a fountain that spill her water somehow out of order so that it looks really crappy. Move it so that it fits and take the blue gem with you.

Forget about the big lever by now and go on on your way. You'll meet Ian. You can talk to him about how to find him, and then continue to the left.

Enter the door in the middle (the mouth). Use the disc from the statue on the pole that'S coming out of the wall. Now use the vinerope on the disc. Now go down one step in the same room (remember?) and there use the loose end of the vine with the wheel. Now stick your baseballbat into the wheel and turn it.

Enter the door that opened and take the pick with you. Go back one room and let the stone back down on the ground by using the baseball bat again.

Go up again in that room and take the back exit.

Look through the hole with the ray of light coming through. USe the pick on that hole. Enter the hole. In that big room you must look at the coffin and then go back to the dripstoneroom. Here you use the pick on the Stalaktit. (Note: Dripstone that are growing from the ground are called Stalagmites, the ones growing from the ceiling stalagtit)

Take that piece of flint thats falling down and stick it into your lighter.

Now go back to the huge Statue and through the right door until the tree with the hole and then down.

After you took the sap with you, you go left to where the hot dosc was and now a stoned Ian is. Take his part of a statue with you. Use the treesap on this

For the right eye of the statue you use the blue Gem and for the left eye you use the green gem. Just stick them in there and the statue will turn it's face and reviele another secret passage.

If you don't want to sear the first symbolis in the lowes colum the second from the left, the one that looks like a "H" with the lower ends like |_ _|

After the introduction you can either watch the 2 fighters for some time or you take action.

Once the fight gets boring for you take Franks Dinoray Gun and shoot at the mutated Dr: Ironstein, whos suprisingly called Frank now. But who cares it's all going wrong of course. So talk to Faye and ask her tu turn her mirror around. Shoot again, and see what happenes. Okay, so give the deathmask to sparky ans shoot at frank for the last time. Your dinoray shot get refelcted a thousand times and finally reaches it's aim. Now, when I say last time and finally you can think whats up now, yes, you have reached the END

You can buy it on ebay, and if you're lucky you can perhaps get the original cardboardbox. If the box is not that important for you and you justwant to play that gem of a game, you can download it from the internet. Just use a seach engine of your choice and you can find it everywhere, Flight of the amazone queen is freeware right now, so there is no problem with copyrights at the moment.

No way, you have to bid on a 286 on ebay and, ... no just kidding, there is a cool tool on the internet thats called ScummVM that emulates a Scumm Engine on you PC and lets you play all the old Lucas Arts and other Scummbased Games.
