PART B Answer any one question from each Module. Module I 11. A 25 hp, 1440 rpm induction motor is to drive a compressor at 900 rpm through a pair of spur gears. Design the pair and check the design for safety. 20 12. A pair of helical gears is to transmit 37.5 kW at 1750 rpm at the pinion. The velocity ratio is to be 4.25 and the helix angle is to be 25. The gears are subjected to a heavy shock load 24 hrs/day. The gear is of cast iron and pinion is of cast steel with 20 full depth system. Design the pair. 20 Module II 13. Design a journal bearing for a centrifugal pump, diameter of journal = 100 mm, speed of journal = 1500 rpm, load on each bearing = 1250 kgf. Clearance ratio = 0.001. Select a suitable oil for a working temperature of 75C. Also find the minimum oil film thickness and power lost in friction. 20 14. a) Derive Petroffs equation. State the assumptions used. b) A deep groove ball bearing ISI 75 BCO2 is to operate under the following conditions.
Time 35% 50% 15% rpm 400 700 1100 Fr (in kgf) Fa (in kgf) 650 550 450 350 300 250

Determine i) Cubic mean load ii) 90% life of the bearing in hours and iii) The average life in hours.

Module III 15. a) Derive equations for hoop stresses and longitudinal stresses for a thin cylinder subjected to internal pressure p. 10 b) The Piston rod of a hydraulic cylinder exerts an operating force of 12 kN. The friction due to Piston packings and stuffing box is equivalent to 12% of operating force. The pressure in the cylinder is 10 MPa. The cylinder is made of cast iron [Sut = 300 N/mm2, FS= 5 and = 0.27). Determine the diameter and thickness of cylinder. 10 16. Design a connecting rod of an internal combustion engine, for the following data : Piston diameter = 0.1525m, stroke = 0.24 m, length of connecting rod = 0.485 m, weight of reciprocating parts = 28.75 N, speed of the engine = 1800 rpm. Maximum explosion pressure = 2.8 MPa gauge. 20
