POLYPR NEWSWIRE, April, 2013

A Visit from President Armstrong

At our last meeting President Armstrong came to speak about how he does public relations for Cal Poly. The four main points he talked about were ensuring student success, enhancing nances for the future, diversity on the Cal Poly campus and crisis communication. One of his main PR tactics when talking to staff and alumni is to always touch upon their biggest concerns. Some of these concerns are student success, learn by doing and excellence. Addressing the concerns of staff and alumni shows his loyalty and dedication to Cal Poly. Halfway through his talk Armstrong opened the oor up for questions. Members asked him about how he has dealt with major controversial topics such as quarters vs. semesters and how he plans to achieve the goals he has set for Cal Poly as a whole.

Meet the 2013-2014 PRSSA Executive Board!

Leila Durmaz

I'm most excited about improving our PRSSA chapter as a whole and bringing our members closer together while also providing valuable meetings that we can all learn from. I'm also looking forward to growing our chapter next year and am super excited for what next year will bring! Dream Job: Public Relations Director for Vogue or PR/Social Media Director for a fashion house like Rebecca Minkoff or Oscar de la Renta. Fun Fact: Ive never been on a plane.

Next year in PRSSA I am most excited to work with the new executive board. Since I joined Cal Polys PRSSA chapter in the fall I have been on the other side of the spectrum, participating in events but never helping to plan them. Im excited to grow my public relations skills by working on the other side of the fence, helping to promote and plan events. Im also excited for the PRSSA National Conference in October. Having been given the opportunity in April to attend the PRSSA National Assembly, I hope that I will be able to also attend National Conference, this time with members from our chapter! Dream Job: My dream job would be working for a local golf course in San Luis Obispo County, doing their PR and/or event planning. Golng is one of my favorite hobbies, I love the atmosphere and serenity of a golf course. Growing up in Arroyo Grande, I always planned to stay local so I would be able to be close to my family, who are number one in my life. Fun Fact: One fun fact about myself is that Im crazy good at Connect Four, yes the board game. I rst discovered my skill in the second grade, when I beat everyone in my class and eventually made it all the way toplaying my assistant principle!

I am most excited for the friendships and connections I will make on PRSSA's E-Board. Dream Job:My dream job would be with Kelly Cutrone at People's Revolution as a member of their marketing or public relations team. Fun Fact:I met Kerri Walsh, the Olympic Volleyball Player at a tournament in San Jose.

I'm incredibly excited to be working with an allnew E-board. We've got a really solid group of leaders this year and I think between us we're going to be able to bounce around a lot of good ideas to make our chapter even better! I'm especially excited to start drawing in some new members and really expanding the denition of what PRSSA is and who we can serve. Dream Job: My dream job is to work on the marketing team at Nike. I think they run some of the most creative, inspiring ad campaigns in the world; and what a cool company to be a part of ! Fun Fact:I've been uent in French since I was 8!

I am so excited to work with both new and old members and expand the horizons of the club! I would also like to assist in the event planning that coincides with these types of companies. Fun Fact: A fun fact about myself is that I met Tyra Banks at a Jamba Juice once.

Kelly Trom
I am so excited to get more involved in PRSSA next year. I am looking forward to networking with alumni and planning some really fun, informative meetings that will further every PRSSA member's future career goals. Dream Job: My dream job is to be the editor-in-chief of a prominent magazine, think Meryl Streep in Devil Wears Prada except I wouldn't be that mean. :) Fun Fact: My little brother and I have the exact same birthday, three years apart.

Fun at National Assembly

By: Emma Patterson
The weekend of April 4th-7th, 2013 was hands-down the highlight of my time within Cal Polys PRSSA Chapter thus far. As I left my house before the sun came up, en route of LAX, my nerves and curiosity about my adventure ahead almost got the best of me. After six hours of ying and two lay overs, I had arrived to represent Cal Poly as National Assembly Delegate in a city only known to me as the set of the HBO Series Breaking Bad, Albuquerque, New Mexico, for the 2013 PRSSA National Assembly. Each year, the PRSSA National Assembly gathers to make inuential, long-term decisions about the future of the Society, elect a new National Committee and review the bylaws. In addition, those who attend engage in leadership training and networking, according to prssa.org. As a delegate, I was given the opportunity to attend workshops, learn from other PRSSA members and vote in the new PRSSA National Committee on behalf of Cal Poly. However, my experience surpassed any denition that could be written about the assembly. Upon my arrival to the hotel, I was greeted by students and fellow delegates from across the nation in the same shoes as me eager to learn more about PRSSA and network. Being able to connect with students so enthusiastic about public relations not only inspired me, but pushed me to expand my practices as well. I caught the Twitter-bug instantaneously. Everyone around me was utilizing social media on a level I had never experienced. As if we were some new subculture, everyone I met wanted to connect, whether it was through Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or Instagram.

On Friday, I attended three leadership training sessions; Act Ethically and Carry On, Spreading the Word, and How to Plan a Sensational Semester, and one chapter officer session. At each workshop, assembly members were split into small groups to discuss how each topic applied to our schools and what tactics we were currently using to better our chapters. As a new PRSSA member, as of Fall 2012, receiving insight into a wide variety of chapters helped me further understand PRSSAs mission while presenting me with many unique ideas on how to enhance Cal Polys PRSSA chapter. On Saturday, the National Assembly Meeting was held. The moment we all had been waiting for was nally here the opportunities as delegates to gathered together and elect the 2013-2014 PRSSA National Committee. Eight hours of parliamentary procedure review, election process explanation, and candidate speeches was rewarded with the appointment of nine students dedicated to the betterment of PRSSA; National President, Brian Price, Vice President of Advocacy, Jessica Airey, Vice President of Career Services, Ellie Boggs, Vice President of Chapter Development, Chris Bonelli, Vice President of Member Services, Heather Harder, Vice President of Professional Development, Helma von Zadow, Vice President of Public Relations, Ben Buttler, Vice President of Regional Conferences, Erica N. Brown, and Publications Editor in Chief, Mallory Richardson. Being able to expand my knowledge of public relations by learning from others within the PRSSA was an experience which I continue to be able to grow from. I developed valuable relationships with people from across the nation who I receive constant advice from. I strongly encourage all members within the Cal Poly PRSSA Chapter to attend a national event within their time at Cal Poly; whether it is National Assemble, National Conference or a National Leadership Rally. The opportunity I was given to attend the 2013 PRSSA National Assemble not only reiterated my love for public relations but was an experience I will never forget.
