s Big Questions Big Ideas

1. According to the Creation Story, how did the four kinds of races come to existence? 2. Among the two theories of Filipino origin, what theory is the most plausible and productive? 3. How is the Creation Theory related to the two theories of migration?

1. There are various opinions concerning the origin of Philippine race and ethnicity 2. There are three existing theories explaining the origin of the Filipinos. These are: Inland Push Theory, Wave Migration Theory and Creation Theory. However; 3. Each of these theories has either invalid or inadequate evidence.

Students will know

Students will be able to

Key termsaboriginal, archipelago, ethnic groups, immigration

Analyze and understand the theories on migration and their implications

The claims of each theory of migration

Re-enact the Creation Theory

The arguments that debunk each theory

Defend the theory which they believe to be the most plausible.

Stage 2 Determine Acceptable Evidence Performance Tasks: Debate Students create two (2) groups that represent the advantages and disadvantages of past migration. Role Play Students present a play about the creation story by forming three (3) different groups that will represent the races (dark-skinned, black and white people) the story mentioned. Formulate an interesting and plausible ending for their assigned race. Other Evidence: Quiz The characters and important events in the creation story. Venn diagram Students create a comprehensive Venn diagram that discusses the differences and similarities between the Inland Push Theory and Wave Migration Theory. Student Self Assessment and Reflection: 1. Self-assess the validity/plausibility of both the Inland Push Theory and the Wave Migration Theory. 2. Reflect on the Creation Story and its implications concerning race.

Step 3-Plan Learning Experiences 1. Begin with an entry question (are you aware of how we Filipinos came to be?) to hook the students' attention. 2. Tell the students about the Creation Story, and emphasize the part when the children ran and hid from their parents. 3. Ask the students to form groups and perform a short skit about the Creation Story in order to facilitate more understanding and memorization. 4. Give a short quiz to evaluate their understanding of the Creation Story. 5. Introduce the two theories concerning the origin of Filipinos: the Inland Push Theory and the Wave Migration Theory, then explain how it can be connected to the Creation Story. 6. Discuss each theory, emphasizing their implications as well as their limitations. 7. Facilitate a debate session, and ask the students to choose and then defend the more plausible theory for each of them. 8. As a last requirement, ask the students to create their own Venn Diagrams concerning the similarities and differences of the Inland Push Theory and the Wave Migration Theory.
