Topic / Theme : Chapter 31 : Algebraic Expression III 31.1 Expansion involving single brackets Learning Objectives : Students will be taught to 1. Understand and use the concept of expanding brackets Learning Outcomes : 1. Expand single brackets 2. Expand two brackets Activities : 1. To expand single brackets which contain linear algebraic terms, we multiply the term outside the bracket to each algebraic terms in the bracket 2. When expansion involves two brackets, multiply each term in the first bracket to every term in the second bracket. If there are like terms, group them together and simplify

( a + b) 2 * ( a b) 2

= a 2 + 2ab + b 2 = a 2 2ab + b 2

( p + q )( p q ) = p 2 q 2

Topic / Theme : Chapter 31 : Algebraic Expression III 31.2 Factorisation of algebraic expression Learning Objectives : Students will be taught to 1. Understand and use the concept of factorisation of algebraic expression to solve problems Learning Outcomes : 1. 2. 3. 4. State factors of an algebraic term State common factors and the HCF for several algebraic term Factorise algebraic expressions by using common factor Factorise algebraic expressions by expressing algebraic expression in the form of the difference of two square

Activities : 1. When an algebraic term is divisible by a number or an algebraic term, this number or term is known as its factor * to find all the factors of an algebraic term, we express it as a product of two terms 2. Common factors for several algebraic terms are factors which are common to all the given algebraic terms 3. To find the common factors for several algebraic terms, list out all the factors for each algebraic term and find out the factors which are common 4. The highest common factor (HCF) is the largest of the common factors 5. To find the HCF, express each algebraic term as aproduct of its prime factors. Then find out the common prime factors for the algebraic r=terms and multiply these common prime factors 6. Factorisation of algebraic expression: Factorisation by expressing an algebraic expression as a product of its HCF and another algebraic expression 2 2 a b = ( a b )( a b ) x2 2xy + y2 = ( x y )2 x2 + 2xy + y2 = ( x + y )2 7. Algebraic fractions are fraction with either its numerator or denominator or both having algebraic expression

8. Algebraic fractions can be simplified by dividing the numerator and denominator by their common factors factorising the numerator or denominator or both and the divide the numerator and denominator bt their common factors Language Focus : -nonePedagogy : Thinking Skills - visualising Contextual, Multiple Intelligence - spatial Multiple Intelligence interpersonal Thinking systematically. Perform addition and subtraction on algebraic fractions Learning Outcomes : 1. Add or substract two algebraic fractions without any common factor 2. Add or substract two algebraic fractions with a common factor Activities : 1. To add or subtract two algebraic fractions with the same denominator: add or substract the numerator while keeping the denominator unchanged Simplify the algebraic fraction if possible 2. To add or substract two algebraic fractions with one denominator as a multiple of the other denominator: Change the algebraic fraction with non-multiple denominator to an equivalent fraction having aa common denominator Add or substract the numerator Simplify the algebraic fraction to its simplest form 3. To add or substract two algebraic fractions with denominator, without any common factor: Find the lowest common multipke of the denominator by multiplying the two denominator Convert each algebraic fraction to its equivalent fraction Add or substract the numerator of the equivalent fractions Simplify the algebraic fraction to its simplest form if possible 4. To add or substract two algebraic fractions with denominator having a common factor: Determine the lowest common multiple of the denominator Convert each algebraic fraction to its equivalent fraction Add or substract the numerators of the equivalent fractions
