Umrah ( )is a journey to the House of Allah () , which can be done at any time of the year. The act of Umrah involves entering into a state of Ihram ( )then performing Tawaaf ( )of the Kabah ( )and the running between Al-Safa ( )and Al-Marwah ( ). Umrah is also known as the minor pilgrimage or lesser pilgrimage.

Performing Umrah cleanses ones soul from past committed sins. It is advised to do Umrah more than once in your lifetime so that it can act as a washing of the sins from the last time one performed Umrah. The Prophet(S) said, An Umrah to another Umrah will be redemption of sins for whatever (minor) occurs between them. (Bukhari, Muslim).

Allah SWT says in the Quran:

And perform properly, the Hajj and 'Umrah for Allah. But if you are prevented (from completing them), sacrifice a Hady (animal, i.e. a sheep, a cow, or a camel) such as you can afford, and do not shave your heads until the Hady reaches the place of sacrifice. And whosoever of you is ill or has an ailment in his scalp (necessitating shaving), he must pay a Fidyah (ransom) of either observing Saum (fasts for three days) or giving Sadaqah (charity - feeding six poor persons) or offering sacrifice (one sheep) (Quran 2: 196)

Like Hajj, the act of Umrah is amongst the best deeds one can perform when pleasing Allah. Allah loves those who try their best (strive) in His path in hopes of pleasing Him alone. Umrah is an act in which Allah considers the pilgrim to be answering His call.

The Prophet

said The people who come to perform Hajj or Umrah are the

guests of Allah because they visit His House on His Call; therefore, Allah grants them what they ask for. (Ibn Majah)
The Prophet said, An Umrah to another Umrah will be redemption of sins for

whatever (minor) occurs between them. (Bukhari, Muslim). The Prophet said, Follow up the Hajj and Umrah, because they certainly remove

poverty and sins as fire separates the impurities from iron, gold and silver. (Tirmidhi)

The Umrah pilgrim performs series of action which reminds us of the lives of Ibrahim and his second wife Hajar, alayhimus salam. These actions are called rites. They must be performed, and be performed correctly, to the best of our ability, in order for Allah azza wa jal, to accept our pilgrimage. The main acts (rites) of Umrah are shown in the picture below. Read on to find out more about each rite.

In Arabic Meeqaat means a station or a place. But when we talk about Umrah or
Hajj, it means a special place where you will make your intention - niyah ( )for Umrah or Hajj. Intention means the reason why you are doing something. We should always make sure that whatever we do, our intention is to please Allah. You see for Umrah, you need to make your niyah at special place, and if you miss this, your Umrah is invalid. Who gives this rule? Narrated Ibn Abbas: Allah's Apostle made Dhul-

Huiaifa as the Meeqaat for the people of Medina; AlJuhfa for the people of Sham; Qarn-al-Manazil for the people of Najd; and Yalamlam for the people of Yemen; and these Mawaqit are for the people at those very places, and besides them for those who come thorough those places with the intention of performing Hajj and 'Umrah; and whoever is living within these boundaries can assume lhram from the place he starts, and the people of Mecca can assume Ihram from Mecca. (Bukhari). Since we will travel by plane to Makkah, we will fly over our Meeqaat. While we are on the plane we will need to make sure we are ready and make our niyah ( )to enter the state of Ihram ().
7 2013 Muslimhomeschoollondon

Now that you know what Meeqat is, you must know what you are supposed to do there. Do as the Prophet Muhammad did in his Sunnah; 1. You will take the special bath there. 2. Cut your nails. 3. If you have armpit hair, it is sunnah to remove them. 4. If you have pubic hair it is sunnah to remove them also. Because we will be travelling by plane and there will be no place to do some of these things, we will do them at home before we leave for the airport, and make our niyah on the plane inshaAllah. You will get into your Ihram before we fly over the Meeqat.

For boys, the Ihram garment consists of two pieces of white sheet.
1. You will wrap the larger sheet around your waist to cover your body from the navel to the ankles, this area is called the awrah. 2. Secure the Ihram either with a belt or by a strip of fabric torn from Ihram material. 3. Drape the other sheet over the back and shoulders. 4. The head should not be covered, and no underwear should be used. 5. Wear a pair of sandals or shoes which do not cover the ankles.

Make sure it is fastened properly. We dont want it to drop! If it drops during the tawaf, or part of your awrah ( ) is shown, quickly have it covered. If you delay it, then that turn is consider invalid and you must repeat that round.

For girls, the ihram garment is the normal prayer clothes that you wear. It must not be: transparent, tight, too short or not covering your chest.

9 2013 Muslimhomeschoollondon

We must have Tawakkul trust in Allah, ( )and ikhlaas - sincerity ( )in performing Umrah. Our intention should be that we are doing it for Allah only and so that He will be pleased with us. We must make intention! So make the intention in your heart: Most important of all be sincere, have IKHLAAS, about going to Umrah. You are doing this for ALLAH alone, not because your parents made you go.

Labbayk Allaahumma Umrah Oh Allah here I am performing Umrah.

O! Allah take the place where I take off my ihram is where you restrain me.
The one who reads this and qadar ( )Allah that he is prevented from completing the Umrah, there is no compensatory sacrifice due from him. 1

A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Allah's Messenger

went into the house of Duba'a bint

Zubair and said to her: Did you intend to perform Hajj? She said: By Allah, I intend to do so but I often remain ill, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said to her: Perform Hajj but with condition, and say: O Allah, I shall be free from Ihram where you detain me. (Muslim :: Book 7 : Hadith 2756) 10 2013 Muslimhomeschoollondon

After saying the niyah, we start reciting the talbiyyah all the way until we reach Makkah. The sunnah is to recite the talbiyyah loudly for the boys while the girls say it quietly.

Labbayka Allhumma Labbayk. Labbayk L Sharka Laka Labbayk. Inna l-amda, Wa n-Nimata, Laka wal Mulk, L Sharka Lak.
Here am I, O Allah, Here am I. There is no associate with You. Here am I. Surely all praise and graces are Yours, and so is the dominion! And You have no partners with you.

11 2013 Muslimhomeschoollondon

After you make niyah ( ) for Umrah, you will be in a state of ihram. And being in a state of ihram means, there are things that you cannot do. There are also things that you must complete doing. Before we discuss what we cannot do, we must know that once you say the niyah for Umrah, you must complete all the Umrah rites. Pray to Allah that it is made easy for you. The things that you cannot do while in ihram are;

Hunting Marriage. Using perfume. Applying kohl on the eyes. Looking in a mirror. For men only: wearing shoes or socks. Cursing other people. Quarreling with others. Killing the insects on ones body. For men only: wearing the sewn clothes.

Using cosmetics. Applying oil on the body. Getting rid of the bodily hair. For women: covering the face. For men: shading themselves from sun or rain. Causing blood to come out of ones body. Clipping the nails. Pulling out the teeth. Carrying arms (weapons). For men only: covering the head. (Even submerging the head in a body of water is not allowed, for both men as well as women.)

Stop reciting the Talbiyyah upon seeing the houses of Makkah. We will stop to put our bags at the hotel first. Take this opportunity to: 1. Check for any najasah impurity ( )on the ihram garment. Clean them if any. 2. Renew your wudhu if necessary. Tawaaf ()is not accepted without wudhu.

The Prophet

entered the masjid from Baab Bani Shaibah, as that was the nearest way to

the Black Stone () . Enter the Masjid with your right foot and say:

Bismillah, wassalatu was Salamu ala rasulillah. A'udhu billahil `azeemi wa biwajhihil karim wa sultanihil qadeemi minash shaitanir rajeem. Allahumm-aftah li abwaba rahmatika. I begin in the name of Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. I seek refuge in Allah the Great, in His honourable Face and in his Ancient Authority from the accursed Shaytaan. O Allah! Open the gates of Your Mercy for me.

When you see the Kabah you can make dua to Allah azza wa jal.

14 2013 Muslimhomeschoollondon

During the Tawaaf, boys should put the Ihram on in such a way as to bare their right shoulder (ibtida).

1. When we begin our Tawaaf we start at the corner of the black stone. We circle the Kabah in anti-clockwise direction, so the Kabah is always on our left. 2. We face it and say Allahu Akbar. 3. Then touch the black stone with you hand, kiss it and place your forehead upon it. If this is not possible then touch it with your hand and kiss your hand. If this is not possible then just point towards it with your right hand only (not kissing your hand) this is to be done at the beginning of each circuit of Tawaaf.

15 2013 Muslimhomeschoollondon

4. The first 3 circuits of Tawaaf should be done with speeding up your pace with small steps, (Raml) The next four circuits should be done at a normal pace. 5. Each time you pass the Yemeni corner, try and touch it with your hand, if it is not possible then point towards it. 6. Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone say; 7. Each time you get to the Black Stone face follow the above steps.

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil 'akhirati hasanatan waqina 'adhaban-nar. Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and save us from the chastisement of the fire. [2:201]

16 2013 Muslimhomeschoollondon

1. When you have completed Tawaaf cover both of your shoulders and go to the Maqaam Ibrahim () , and say;

Wattakhidhu mim maqami Ibrahima musalla And take the station of Ibrahim as a place of Prayer.

2. Offer 2 Rakah prayer with the Maqaam Ibrahim between you and the Kabah. It is better to recite Surah Kafirun in the first rakah and Surah Ikhlaas in the second Rakah. Be careful that no one walks in front of you, and you dont walk in front of anyone. 3. Go to Zam Zam and drink the water, and pour some over your head. 4. Go back to the Black Stone and touch it saying Allahu Akbar. If this is not possible because of the crowds it can be left out.

17 2013 Muslimhomeschoollondon

Sai is the going to and from Safa and Marwah the way Hajar , radiallahu anha did. The next rite of Umrah is to go to Safa.

1. When you get to the bottom of Safa you should say;

Inna assafa walmarwata min shaaa irillahi faman hajj albayta awi amara fala junaaha alayhi an yaTawwafa bihimaa waman taTawwaa khayran fa-in nAllahashakirun AAaleem. Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah . So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good - then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing. (2:158)

2. Then Say;

. Nabdau bima bada allahu bihi . We begin with what Allah began with

18 2013 Muslimhomeschoollondon

3. Then climb onto Safa until the Kabah is visible. 4. Face the Qiblah, and say this 3 times; between each one make dua. Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar. Laa ilaaha illallaahu wahdahu la shareekalahu, lahul mulku wala hul hamdu, wa huwa 'alaa qulli shay in qadeer. Laa ilaaha illallaahu wahdahu, anjaza wa 'dahu, wa nasara 'abdahu, wa hazamal ahdhaaba wahdahu. " Allaah is the Greatest, Allaah is the Greatest, Allaah is the Greatest. None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah alone, who has no partner. To Him belongs the dominion, to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over everything. He fulfilled His promise, gave victory to His servant, and defeated the confederates alone."

5. The climb down from Safa and go towards Marwah, walk to the Green traffic light and when you reach it run a bit till you get to the next green traffic light. Make dua and dhikr until you reach Marwah. 6. At Marwah repeat what you did at Safa. 7. Then descend Marwah and go back to Safa repeating everything. 8. Repeat this to and fro until you make seven circuits ending at Marwah.

For the boys it is encouraged to totally shave the head because Rasullullah prays three times more for those who shave their hair off ( ). However it is ok to trim it. (). Make sure the person who cuts your hair is NOT in a state of Ihram otherwise they would have violated the rites of Umrah.

Allah's Apostle said, "O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their head shaved." The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! And (invoke Allah for)those who get their hair cut short." (Bukhari)

For the girls, it is sufficient just to trim some hair (). The minimum is three strands of hair.

Before we leave Makkah for Madinah, we will perform our last Tawaaf which is called Tawaaf al Wadaa. This is based on this hadith; Narrated Ibn Abbas: The people were ordered to perform the Tawaaf of the Ka'ba (Tawaafal-Wada') as the lastly thing, before leaving (Mecca), except the menstruating women who were excused. (Bukhari). This tawaaf is to show our gratefulness to Allah for making the Umrah easy for all of us and through His will that we are here in Makkah. For this tawaaf, the man is not required to do Raml nor wear the Idtiba. But the tawaf will still be done anti-clockwise for seven times. This should be our last act in Makkah and so we will leave Makkah immediately after performing this ibadah. We should not linger in Makkah after this.

21 2013 Muslimhomeschoollondon

When you are in Makkah, please remember to be patient all the time. If you have not been a very patient person, this is perhaps the time to be one. Refrain yourself from saying anything bad. Practice thinking before saying anything. When you see something that is not pleasing or you see someone doing something funny (and you feel like mocking them), try to refrain from saying it. If you have said it in your heart, make istighfar quickly. Ask Allah for forgiveness for this attitude. This is the time for us to practice good. It is the time for ibadah - worship. Lets clean our heart from anger and mockery of other people or things. May Allah make it easier for all of us. And I pray this is the start of us to make changes in our personality.
