University of North Texas Summer 2013 Intensive English Language Institute Week 3: June 17 - 23

Dallas Art Museums: Friday, June 21, 5:30 PM - 12:30 AM. Join IELI on a trip to the art museums in downtown Dallas for their annual Block Party, one of the biggest art events in North Texas! There will be performances, concerts, movies, tours, family programs, food, and lots of art! The cost is free with a student ID card or $10 at the door for non-UNT students. Sign up in Ambers office by June 20. Restaurant Night: Friday, June 28, 5:30 - 8:30 PM. Have you ever wondered what kind of food is served by a local restaurant? Do you want to know where you can find good food in Denton? Try a new restaurant with one of your IELI teachers or staff members! Each teacher will take a group to a different restaurant and give you advice on which dishes are best. Sign up in Ambers office (SYMR 202) by Thursday, June 27. Students are responsible for paying for their own meal and providing a tip the waiter/waitress.

All new Summer international students are required to be screened for tuberculosis after beginning classes at UNT/IELI. Come by Ambers office (SYMR 202) to make your appointment. You must complete a TB test between Monday, June 17, and Thursday, June 27.

Do you want an extra opportunity to practice speaking English with Americans? Come to IELIs Conversation Hour! Friday, June 21, from 12:10 PM 1 PM in SYMR 203 Sign up in Ambers office, SYMR 202, if you want to attend. Only 40 students may attend, and you must be on Ambers sign-up list to attend. This will be a great opportunity to meet American volunteers and practice your English. There will be free food and conversation games. Conversation Hour will be held on Fridays during the Summer term. Students must sign up each week to secure their spot for Conversation Hour.

Phone number: 940-565-2333, Press option 2 When you go to the Health Center, you must bring three forms with you: TB Screening Record, Medical History Form, and TB Screening Form. You should have received the forms at orientation. If you need extra copies of the forms, have questions, or would like help making your appointment, come to Ambers office, SYMR 202.

Womens group pool party! Saturday, June 22 3:00 - 7:00 PM This will be a special event for American and International women only to enjoy the pool, sunshine, food, and friendship! Sign up or talk to Katie or Amber (SYMR 202) if you would like to join the party. If you need a ride to the volunteers home, we will provide transportation to and from the party. There will also be space inside for a dance party, so bring your favorite music!

DONT FORGET! If you signed up for the Payment Plan, you have a payment due on Friday, June 21. Please speak with Alissa, SYMR 205, if you have any questions.

UNT 101: How to Apply Meeting - Tuesday, June 25, 12:101:00 PM in SYMR 271. If you are interested in learning about UNT and the many programs offered, you should attend this meeting.

Do you want to help new IELI students? If so, you should sign up to be a PAL! The Peer Assistance and Leadership (PAL) Program is designed to help new students adjust to both the academic and social environments at UNT. In this program, experienced students serve as mentors for new students. Mentors give advice and guidance to new students. You must complete at least 2 terms in IELI and be in Level 3 or above to be a PAL. This is a great opportunity for you to get involved in IELI and be a leader. Share what you know and help a new friend! To be a PAL, pick up an application from Ambers office (SYMR 202). If a student serves as a mentor, he/she will receive a certificate of participation in the program and will be able to include the participation on his/ her university application or resume. It is important that you plan on staying in the Denton area for the Fall semester if you plan to be a PAL.

Each week, Amber and Katie will make a Weekly Update video of important events and announcements. If you would like to star in one of the videos, please stop by SYMR 202 and talk to Amber or Katie. Volunteers will be entered into a drawing for a prize at the end of the term!

The Department of Teacher Education and Administration at UNT needs 3-5 volunteers. UNT students in the Teacher Education program want to meet with you for 1.5 to 2 hours and give you feedback on your English skills, strengths, and weaknesses. If you want to participate, contact Prof. Ricardo Gonzalez (Ricardo.Gonzalez@unt.edu). All information you give them will be confidential.

Meet a Labbie: Alejandro Bartolini Hey! My name is Alejandro, and I am a lab assistant. I probably have seen some of you, but I want to meet everyone this summer, so come to visit me in the computer lab. Some information about me: I am from Venezuela. I really enjoy dancing and going to swim. I can go anytime to eat pizza and ice cream, so if you are bored at home, do not hesitate about going out to do some of this things! I may be there!

You can view your assignment grades and class average any time you want to online at my.unt.edu. Starting Summer 2013, your teacher will not give you paper copies of your class grades and averages. You will still receive paper copies of official Mid -term Grade Reports and Final Grade Reports. Syndicate: FIFA Game Brazil vs. Mexico - Wednesday, June 19, 3:00 - 6:00 PM at the Union Syndicate. Join UNT students to watch an awesome match between Brazil and Mexico. It will be a thrilling game you wont want to miss! UPC Film: Monsters, Inc. - Thursday, June 20, 9:00 - 10:30 PM at the Library Mall Field (if it rains the location will be moved to the Lyceum). Monsters generate their city's power by scaring children, but they are terribly afraid themselves of being contaminated by children, so when one enters Monstropolis, top scarer Sulley finds his world disrupted. Watch this movie with your friends and other UNT students. It will be a scary fun time!
