3U Fetal Pig DISSECTION & BELL RINGER EXAM

DISSECTIONS The dissection of any animal must be undertaken with care and thought. Dissection involves the systematic examination of the organism to reveal the structure of the organs and their association with one another. A hurried and careless dissection will reveal nothing more than a collection of assorted organs scattered throughout the body of the animal. To gain the most from this activity, you should become familiar with the systems you will be exploring, the terms necessary to understand the directions given, and the techniques required. EACH STUDENT WILL HAVE 2 periods to dissect the pig. IF YOU KNOW YOU WILL BE ABSENT FROM ONE OF THESE CLASSES, YOU MUST ARRANGE TO FIND ANOTHER GRADE 11 BIOLOGY CLASS TO PARTICIPATE WITH AND HAVE THE PERMISSION OF THAT TEACHER TO DO SO. BELL-RINGER Value: The bell-ringer exam is worth 10% of the final grade in SBI 3U. The other 20% of the summative will come from the final exam in June (1.5 hours in length). THIS YEARS BELL RINGER IS ON __________________. IF YOU MISS THIS EXAM WITHOUT A DOCTORS NOTE, YOU WILL BE ASSESSED A ZERO. Facts about the bell ringer: o There will be between 30 and 35 stations set up in the room. o Most stations have two questions o Almost all questions can be answered in 1-2 words o You have 1 minute at each station o You may not go back to any stations that you have passed. o You arent allowed to touch or move anything o You will not have time at the end of the exam to fill in answers. o There is no makeup exam o If you are an IEP student, it is your responsibility to arrange with your teacher AHEAD OF TIME to be accommodated appropriately for this exam. (Answer: pyloric sphincter) a) List an enzyme that can be found inside this organ. (Answer: Pepsin) General Guidelines about Content o Master the content from unit 4 o Study from guides provided by your teacher WELL IN ADVANCE of the dissection. o Prepared students will come with study notes that help them identify structures that they are going to see. o This is not about MEMORY it is about being able to identify organs/vessels you know you will find in a particular location. o Students are responsible for knowing the names of the STRUCTURES covered on the lists, CONNECTIONS to other structures, the FUNCTION of each structure and what you might find INSIDE. It is also good to know the quantity of each structure (for example most higher organisms have 2 kidneys). o TAKE PICTURES and make notes on what you see in each o EXPOSE yourself to as many specimens as possible (both online and in class). If you are dissecting a female,
