Leader and Leadership Ditulis oleh Aries Musnandar Jumat, 28 September 2012 10:59 Since the reformation of the

Country over 14 years ago, many Indonesian people who want to be deemed as leaders at both the national and local regions, therefore, a lot of them follow election. Indonesian elites are in the euphoria of democracy with high power of lust to be a leader both locally and nationally. Being a leader is considered easy but it is not. A Leader should be having a number of attributes that embedded into basic personality of a person as following criteria: First, a leader must be able to provide added value to the organization and its stakeholders so that he could create a better life. It is very important for a leader to always be thinking and thinking tirelessly to contribute to the best and the creation of added value for the organization he leads. In this context, it is relevant to do something is "Excellence" (doing the thing right) Second, a leader must be able to unite the members of the group. One of the most important concepts of management is how a leader can run organization plan and achieve the targets set by others. Therefore, it is highly unlikely if a Leader to work alone without the help and support of other team members that he had always tried to build a strong team work, which can not only work together but more of that is to work together to produce the output more Powerful. Third, a leader is the "ordinary people" who have incredible dreams. A true leader must throw away the words "cannot" in the dictionary of life, the philosophy behind it is that a leader does not give up, it is not easy to despair, tenacious, have a mental steel, willing to learn from failure and continue to strive to be the best, wants to be "The First" and "The Best" and do not want to be a loser even be number 2 though. For him there is only one word "Now or Never". Fourth, the key to successful leadership is influence not rule. Many people incorrectly interpret the concept of leadership so that such type of leaders are always trying to dominate, always want to be valued and respected, and was busy building the image of him. For him, power, authority and mandate are not to be compromised and must be implemented by the subordinates. When in fact that a successful leader is a leader who can guide, protect and influence of his men so that the subordinates never felt governed but rather feel empowered. Fifth, the leader is a very efficient. Efficient leader is a leader who can always make all the complicated issues into simple so that the root of the problem can be easily identified and solved. He always uses "Helicopter View" and "strategic thinking" in seeing any problems. For him, from the top he will look down as a forest and not trees. In other words, a leader should not see a problem partially but must be seen in terms of a larger organization, the company as a whole so that the decisions taken are not short-term decisions at the operational level but rather the long-term decisions that are strategic. Sixth, the leader knows to put the right people in the right position. The task of a leader is to explore and identify the "talents" within the organization and then to empower them through a "learning process" in the forms of coaching, training and other appropriate development in accordance with the "demands of competencies" needed by the organization. Seventh, to be a great leader, the first thing to do is to be a servant, so the leader is to serve and not to be served. Certainly a capable leader is a willing to accept and accommodate all opinions and ideas of subordinates, if the idea has the potential to improve the performance of the organization, whether in relation to efficiency and effectiveness, especially those associated with "Innovation and creativity". Expectedly, by using a paradigm that the leader is a servant, then subordinates will be motivated to bring innovative and creative ideas and do what is best for the organization.

Eighth, a great leader always listens, inspire and offer solutions. In order to understand the problems that exist in the organization, of course, a leader must find an objective and balanced information from various sources, therefore a willingness to hear from any speaker, regardless of rank and position in the organization is absolutely necessary. After the hearing, leaders need to analyze and conclude the issue so that he can quickly provide inspiration and solutions that are needed by the organization. Ninth, leadership is associated with the creation process of more and better leader than him. A leader should be a visionary who had the foresight; he did not want the organization achieved success only because of the role and contribution of the "one person" just so that organizations become unhealthy because it very much depends on the one person. Therefore, a leader must always work hard and smart to build the system and prepare better human resources to eliminate dependency on individuals and achieve better results more spectacular to the organization he led in the future. Tenth, a leader is a person who has high moral (religious) values. A leader is not easy to be tempted by the life of the world over which could lead him into excessive lust and hedonistic person. A leader is a person who understands the moral values of religion and believes that life does not end up in the world but there is a life that will evaluate all the behavior of the world to gain matchless reward as a weighing result of virtue and evil he has done for the world. So as a leader in his behavior guided by the value of the prophetic faith and far away from contemptible actions *) Aries Musnandar is a lecturer on Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Business Communication, School of Economics and Business Universitas Brawijaya.
